:This article concerns shapeshifting (also known as "transformation") as an action or state of being. For the artistic metagenre which involves shapeshifting as a plot device, see transformation fiction.
Shapeshifting is, in its most basic meaning, a change from one state to another. A shapeshifter (also known as Shapechanger) is a term encompassing any sort of being that can change their physical shape and appearance under its own willpower. In fantasy fandoms, these beings may be known as polymorphs (i.e. a being or creature with the means to change its biological shape into another, commonly by the use of magic; This process is also commonly known as "morphing.")

In mythology
Shapeshifters abound in the lore of most cultures. Contemporary examples include werewolves, which are wolves that turn into humans (or vice versa, depending on the specific mythos), and kitsune (and related shapeshifters, such as kumiho), which are typically depicted as the enlightened semi-spirit forms of foxes which can turn into people.

Hence, if the term 'furry' is taken in its loosest sense, i.e., something which exhibits a mixture of human and animal traits, then these may be the oldest known examples of furries in human culture.

In the furry fandom
When used in terms of the furry fandom, it is generally in the context of changing from a human form into an animal one. Shapeshifting, or transformation, can have several meanings in the fandom. For furry lifestylers, it can reflect an interest in the fantasy of "being" your animal, and the earnest desire to one day wake up and see your human-ness gone. It can have aspects of sexual fantasy, especially in the case of unwanted involuntary transformations forced by others. It can reflect an active spiritual or oneirological state of human-animal changes, as found in therianthropy. Or it can refer to biological or cybernetic changes, either in real life or in science fiction, to make a person more animal-like.

Shapeshifting is typically a one-way route in furry fan stories and art; the goal is to become animal, often a quadruped, rather than return to humanity. The main difference is in were stories where, due to traditional genre conventions, an aspect of returning to being human for at least a short time is often included. Transformation stories may have people turn fully into bestial animals, rather than anthropomorphic ones, losing all human level or reasoning and intelligence.

Fandom applications
A great deal of fursonas in the furry fandom are shapechangers. Some of them accomplish this task by "magical" means, some using technology (i.e., nanites or extreme genetic engineering), and some furs can shapechange "just because."

Transformation art is created by a wide variety of TF22 fans, both for themselves and as commissioned work for non-artist TF fans. This art can either be single, 'one-shot' images, or sequences depicting a transformation in as few as three or as many as 15-20 images. There are websites available to view transformation artwork, such as Transfur and Fur Affinity. TF fans communicate through chat, groups, lists and bulletin boards.

Most mucks also include a morph program, which facilitate these changes. The most common program was created by Triggur for FurryMUCK, although there are others (and indeed, some mucks have multiple morph programs, depending on that user's preferences).fact

Arrugusk WWolfe is a werewolf that has the ability to turn from human and back. He joined the fandom on September 14th, 2009. Some in the fandom refer to him as a troll due to his almost never-ending behavior (see below).

Personality
He is rather antisocial and prefers to mock Furries and people that he thinks are wrong, or if he doesn't like them. Arrugusk doesn't want to be a troll, and he says that he is against trolls and that this is just who he is. He does have the ability to be nice, he just doesn't use it too much. He prefers to joke - alot. But by jokes, he means not just 'idiotic' jokes like Knock Knock, but cruel and funny jokes that can make anybody laugh or make people quite angry. His favorite pasttime is insulting people in a smart-like intimidating and unusual way. This is, if he likes to. He has noted on some of his pages that he does not care about losing a friend or about other peoples problems. Instead, he decides to make it worse for others which is usually why others do not go near him, both in real life or on the internet.

"Insult - Retaliate - Repeat. That's how I roll."

Personal Life
Arrugusk was born in Ireland on July 8, 1994. By the age of 2, he moved to England and stayed there for 5 years. He then moved to Denmark at the age of 7, and stayed for 3 years. He learned Danish and a little bit of French because of some of the students. After that, he moved to Australia, where he stayed for 2 years. He now resides in Philadelphia, PA in North America at the age of 16. He does not care what anybody thinks of him, and he likes to listen to music in his spare time and draw art. Arrugusk plays World of Warcraft and is known as 'The guy who is grumpy all the time' on the EU server Nagrand.

Friends
Arrugusk is not known as someone with a mass amount of friends. However, one of the friends he is particularly close to is Echo Tiger. Even as friends he is known to jokingly insult Echo when he wants to. But, since they have known each other for quite some time now, Echo has picked up on the fact that Arrugusk is known for this behavior, so they probably never get into fights about this.

Reactions to this personality
A forum post on the World Of Warcraft forums, which is now gone, was of a dwarf named Megasnaxi talking about why Gutt (Arrugusk) was 'All angry, cruel and grumpy'. Most of the players' responses were trying to insult Arrugusk mostly due to the fact that half of the server hated him at the time. A small portion of the answers questioned the reason why. Megasnaxi included in the post that "There has to be a reason why he acts like this, and not just a thing he was born with".

Felix Colt
Felix Colt is the only known member of the Idiotic Furry Society, primarily because he's the only big enough idiot of all other furries that are also possible idiots. However, he refuses to add any members being the faggot that he is. Ailurus fulgens felicis, which is named after Colt himself. Very little is known about Colt's origins, as he can only recall events occurring after his awakening from a coma in Princeton Plainsboro Hospital, some bullshit he made up in an effort to erect a story of him owning the smartest doctor in the Fuckwad ward. Despite intense curiosity about his origins, Colt only recently began reaching out to the rest of the furry world, but is now forging through to attempt to link up with his roots, which is also bullshit because he's obviously never heard of the word Asswipe.

Characteristics
The A. f felicis sub-species of Red Panda varies only slightly from the other two sub-species, but these differences are sources of pride for Colt. Primarily, A. f felicis have larger ears than other Red Pandas; in Felix Colt's case, the ears are so large and heavy they are difficult to keep erect (in fact, Colt's right ear has an effectively permanent droop, and he must often brush them out of his eyes).
They are extremely affectionate and playful, especially when meeting other furs, often requiring those around them to have above-average patience (although this may simply be Colt's compensation for a lost childhood). A. f felicis are also incredibly cute, and are largely aware of this fact, never shying away from an opportunity to profit from it; favoured rewards include physical contact (cuddling, hugging, scritching, rubbing, petting, etc.), adoration, food, and toys. There are other differences with the other sub-species, but these are not represented strongly enough in DNA to yet be considered more than Felix Colt's own biological variation.

Personal Life
Felix Colt is believed to have been born during 30 October, 1985, likely in the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. He currently resides in New Westminster, Canada and spends his free time involving himself in as much furry social networking as possible, along with his personal hobbies.
