[[File:SK Logo Big TV.gif|right|thumb]]
'''SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron''' (also known simply as '''SWAT Kats''') was an animated television show created by French-Canadians Christian and Yvon Tremblay and produced by [[Hanna-Barbera]] with a superhero/action theme building largely on the popularity of other previous series such as [[Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles]]. The show aired for two seasons, from September 11, 1993 to December 25, 1994. All the characters on the show are [[anthropomorphic]] [[cat]]s, and some of its word-humor is derived from cat-related terms. Despite its short lifespan, ''SWAT Kats: the Radical Squadron'' maintains a loyal fanbase to this day.

Though currently unfounded, there is a rumor going about claiming that Cartoon Network will release a new Swat Kats show - with a brand-new style, but with many of the old characters returning. If true, it is unknown if this series will be a brand new take on the show, or a sequel of sorts, as was the case with the new ''[[Biker Mice from Mars]]'' series.

==Characters==
'''[[T-Bone]]''' - ace pilot and the brawn of the SWAT Kats team, he is an unstoppable fighter in the air and hand-to-hand, though he does have to deal with the conflict of his ego with his heroic instincts to protect the innocent and defeat evildoers. In his secret identity as Chance Furlong, he is an automotive mechanic along with longtime friend and partner Jake Clawson.

'''[[Razor (SWAT Kats)|Razor]]''' - Razor is the gunner and somewhat the smarter of the two. His battle tactic is more focused on strategy, reflected both in long-range and hand-to-hand fighting style, in which he employs great skill in martial arts techniques. As Jake Clawson, he holds together a struggling auto repair business with his friend and partner Chance Furlong, and could be considered somewhat shy and insecure. This might be owing partly to the incident which discharged him and Chance from the Enforcers.

'''[[Callie Briggs]]''' - The deputy mayor of Megakat City is the real power behind the bumbling figurehead Mayor Manx (who was in fact a parody of actor W. C. Fields). She is one of the SWAT Kats' biggest supporters.

'''Commander Ulysses Feral''' - XO of Megacat CIty's personal police force the Enforcers, and former boss of T-Bone and Razor. He fired them after they defied orders and went after Dark Kat, causing massive property damage as a result, though he has no idea the cadets he discharged from the force are the SWAT Kats. As much as he disagrees with his former subordinates, he has much less tolerance for their alter-egos, considering them just as much a threat to the city as any of the supervillains, and makes it his business to try and capture and unmask them.

'''Lieutenant Felina Feral''' - Commander Feral's neice, Felina has more respect for the SWAT Kats than her uncle does, and will often work with them and their supporters under Feral's nose, whenever necessary.

'''Lieutenant Commander Steele''' - An abrasive, arrogant, and cowardy opportunist, Steele is always seeking to usurp Feral's position as Enforcers commander, and will use anything at his disposal to do so.

'''Mayor Manx''' - A naive, portly man, more concerned about his image than anything, Mayor Manx is more or less a figurehead for Megakat City's political world to the more able-bodied Callie.

'''Dark Kat''' - the recurring supervillain is aptly named, for his true identity and the extent of his influence on crime at large are unknown. A brilliant strategist, he was likely modeled after Marvel Comics' Kingpin. He also has some skills in the arcane, or at least advanced technology, as he controls vast physical power and is always accompanied by a pair or more of tiny demon-like creatures who do his bidding without question.

'''[[Dr. Viper]]''' - the former Dr. Elrod Purvis turned into a half-[[snake]] as a result of an accident caused by his own greed. Like Dark Kat, he has his own plans to destroy Megakat City and remake it to his liking.

'''Mad Kat''' - The deranged spirit of a Medieval court jester fused with an equally down-and-out modern day comedian, Mad Kat acts much like DC Comics' Myxptlk, conjuring yellow and orange items of doom to take revenge on public figures whom he sees resemble the King, Queen, Knight, and Jester who ruined him.

'''Metallikats''' - A husband and wife criminal duo, Mac and Molly Mange were eventually captured, but drowned while attempting to escape the island prison they were sent to. A kindly scientist discovered their bodies and managed to download their memories and personality into robotic frames, which they now use to get revenge on those they feel are responsible for their bad luck.

'''Pastmaster''' - An undead, time-manipulating sorcerer from the Dark Ages, the Pastmaster was imprisoned centuries earlier before and remained so until his eventual release in the modern day. Having been out of the loop for so long, however, he does not particularly care for the new technology that has advanced during his absence, and strives to eradicate it all and return Megakat City back to the era he's most familiar with.

==Trivia==
*Hanna-Barbera produced a total of 23 episodes for the series, 13 for Season 1 and 10 for Season 2. Only 10 episodes were produced for Season 2 because midway through the season, Turner Entertainment, Hanna-Barbera's parent company, abruptly cancelled the show. As a result, three first-season episodes were re-used for the second season, but with second-season opening credits and opening and closing theme music. The exact reason why the show was canceled is debatable: Turner reportedly canned the show because it wasn't moving enough merchandise. However, at the time there was hardly any merchandise for the show, except for a handful of action figures, a video game and a bicycle tips safety mailer, and also ignores the fact that - even with the lack of merchandise - the show was at the top of the Nielsen Ratings for syndicated animated programming at the time of its cancellation. On the other hand, Ted Turner, the owner of Turner Entertainment, was reportedly displeased with the level of violence in the cartoon, going on record to claim in an interview to Entertainment Weekly after the show's cancellation, "We have more cartoons than anybody: The Flintstones, The Jetsons, the Smurfs, Scooby-Doo. They're nonviolent. We don't have to worry that we're encouraging kids to kill each other - like SOME of the other cartoon programs do.", which seems to indicate he canceled the show solely to keep Hanna-Barbera's image of a squeaky-clean family company. Interestingly, Buzz Potemkin, the show's executive producer, attempted to save the show from being canceled, but was overruled.
*A 24th episode, an "S.K.I.Q." episode featuring clips from both seasons, was originally intended to lead off Season 2 but instead aired at the end of the season.
*The voices of main characters T-Bone (Charlie Adler) and Razor (Barry Gordon) are perhaps better known for portraying [[rabbit]] [[characters]] such as Buster Bunny, Mr. Whiskers, and the Nesquik Bunny. Gordon, however, is also known as the voice of [[Donatello]] from the original ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'' animated series.
*Other notable voices that can be heard on the show include:

:*Gary Owens (Commander Feral), the radio announcer from ''Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In'' and the original voice of Space Ghost and Blue Falcon

:*Ed Gilbert (Enforcer Sgt), also the voice of Baloo in the Disney TV animated series ''Tale Spin''

:*Mark Hamill (Burke/Jonny), probably known best for his role of Luke Skywalker in the original ''Star Wars'' trilogy (Episodes 4-6)

:*Robert Ito (Mr. Young), best known for his 7-year stint as Sam Fujiyama in the 1970s series ''Quincy, M.E.''

*The biochemist Dr. Konway in the episode "Mutation City" is named after Dr. Samuel Conway, aka [[Uncle Kage]], chairman of [[Anthrocon]] <ref>[http://kilorat.com/kats/list/0067.html Message on SWAT Kats mailing list]</ref>.

{{context}}
A '''cub''' is a [[Wikipedia:Preadolescence|preadolescent]] mammal, usually [[ursine]] or [[feline]]. The young of certain [[species]] may have more specific titles; for example, young [[canine]]s may be called [[pup]]s; young [[fox]]es, [[Wiktionary:kit#Etymology 2|kits]]; etc.

Within [[furry fandom]], the term ''cub'' may be used to refer to all characters under the [[Wikipedia:Age of majority|age of majority]], including adolescents. This has particular relevance due to the prevalence of [[pornography]] in the fandom, which is often restricted using this criteria.

== Legal issues regarding cub media ==

As of 2010 there are no laws in the United States, Canada or the UK that explicitly refer to sexual depictions of minors other than humans, and there is no known case of cub pornography being used to prosecute anyone in a court of law. If cub art were unambiguously classed as [[Wikipedia:Child pornography|child pornography]], it would be unlikely that a publication like ''[[Softpaw Magazine]]'' would have been available for purchase by the public. However there are laws in many countries which could be used to prosecute people if the issue was argued in court. These can include [[Wikipedia:obscenity|obscenity]], [[bestiality]] and [[Wikipedia:child pornography|child pornography]] laws which rely on some interpretation based on opinion.

Also, because such drawings do not depict a physical person, it is impossible to determine their age, therefore some legal systems depend on analysis based on the psychical attributes of normal human development (breasts, pubic hair, muscle tone and size) for age estimation. This can be impractical for fantasy creatures such as [[taur]]s, [[griffon]]s, and [[dragon]]s, which display few human age-related traits.

There are however [[Wikipedia:Legal status of cartoon pornography depicting minors|laws covering cartoon pornography depicting minors]], and Australia has implemented laws strictly prohibiting any depiction of child pornography "even one which departs from recognizable human forms in some significant respects";<ref>''[http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/08/bart-simpson-child-pornography-and-free-speech/ Bart Simpson, Child Pornography and Free Speech]'' - Jack Healy, New York Times blogs (December 8, 2008)</ref> the UK has enacted a similar law.<ref>[http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2009/25/part/2/chapter/2/crossheading/prohibited-images ''Coroners and Justice Act 2009'', Part 2, Chapter 2: Prohibited images] - UK Parliament</ref> These laws have extended to pornography of real people who are over the age of consent but appear to not be. People have being convicted numerous times for possessing non-anthro cartoon pornography, although some of these cases have been overturned on appeal.

=== Cub pornography and furry ===

Cub pornography remains an extremely controversial subject within the furry fandom. Those on one side proclaim it as an expression of [[Wikipedia:Freedom of speech|freedom of speech]] with no actual minors involved; those opposing call it a disgusting [[fetish]] that can lead to illegal activities. Due to the legal grey areas mentioned above, cub porn has been increasingly restricted, much to the chagrin of said artists and those who support them.

For example, in November 2010, popular furry art site [[Fur Affinity]] banned cub porn from its website, after payment processor [[Wikipedia:AlertPay|AlertPay]] cancelled its donations account.<ref>''[http://www.flayrah.com/3346/fur-affinity-loses-alertpay-account-bans-cub-porn Fur Affinity loses AlertPay account, bans cub porn]'' - [[GreenReaper]], [[Flayrah]] (24 November 2010)</ref> Although the act was praised by those who resented cub pornography, this caused a major uproar within the cub community even after the sites owner, [[Dragoneer]], had told everyone that he had no other choice; either it, or the site itself goes. So incensed was the cub community/supporters that Dragoneer received death threats over the matter.{{fact}} The move fuelled growth at [[Inkbunny]], which had opened shortly before with a tag-blocking system allowing such material to co-exist with those not wishing to see it. [[Weasyl]] and [[Sofurry]] forbid cub content.

In 2008, a list of web addresses to be blocked in Australia was spread via [[Wikipedia:Wikileaks|Wikileaks]]; it included several images of cub porn hosted on [[e621]]. The spread of [[Wikipedia:HTTP Secure|HTTPS]], which conceals the URL being accessed, has led to both Fur Affinity and [[Inkbunny]] being [[Wikipedia:Internet censorship in Russia|blacklisted by Russia]].
Note: There are many other costumers who just make paws or tails. All of the costumers on this list are reported to at least commission fursuit heads.
===Possibly inactive (currently only proposal)===
If there isn't any sign of them completing fursuit commissions within the past two years, I propose indicating this somehow, to keep the list relevant. Probably move them to this section, but could also be commented-out, or marked somehow.

== Instructions ==
If you would like to be removed from the list of fursuit makers open for commissions:
# Update the web page that is listed beside your name to say that you are no longer taking commissions or take down the page.
# Edit this page to remove your name. If you remove your name from this list but leaving an external page offering commissions, people might wonder if a competitor is removing you.

If you would like to be added to the list of fursuit makers open for commissions:
# (optional) Create a profile page on WikiFur if one does not exist already.
# Add <nowiki>[[Category:Fursuit makers]]</nowiki> or <nowiki>[[Category:Fursuit studios]]</nowiki> to the bottom of that page if it isn't there already.
# Make sure there is an external web page that can be linked to that shows that you are open for commissions. Even a LiveJournal, etc. post should be good enough.
# Add a link to your WikiFur profile and external page like the entries above.

This is Rat, the Yerf guy.. I think I may have messed up the flow a bit, could I get help cleaning it up? Its like trying to represent a 3D thing on a 2D space. There's chronological, but also several threads of things are trying to be represented, the site's main history, as well as little offshoot things.
I read it closer, and it implied some things that weren't true. For example, when the change was made from SCFA to Yerf, that was only a name change, and some redesign of the layout. There was no relaunch as far as rules or anything else goes. It used to be at http://rat.org/yerf, and I wanted it to have its own domain so it could live on without me should the time came, and it did.
And the grandfathering issue was only due to how long the site had been around, and how inevitibly the rejected applicants would find worse art than their own to point at and ask why that is allowed on but theirs is not. I'm not even sure if the grandfathering thing is worth meantioning really.
My move to california from the east coast occured Sept 22, 1998, and Yerf was down for only a week. I pretty much drove to Tugrik's work from NH, in my compact car for 2500 miles with all my possessions. Somehow it survived. :)
That whole episode had a sad ending, Tugrik made some promises that he didn't deliver on, or he didn't communiate his progress despite me asking, leaving me to believe he lost interest. So I asked for the site back so I could give it to Dingo, who had some great ideas and I believed would do great things. We parted company with him believing I intended to take it back the entire time and I was just using him for temporary hosting. We havent spoken since. So maybe we should downplay, but not remove that section out of respect for Tugrik. Or include it for history's sake, though it is more gossipy that historical.
Nice job on this. You even got the part about Tugrik in there, impressive. -Rat

== History ==

[[Image:SCFA.png|right|SCFA]]
=== SCFA ===

Yerf was initially founded as the ''Squeeky Clean Furry Archive'' by [[Rat (person)|Rat]], and hosted on his site, Rat.org. At that time it was little more than an ftp server, although it developed later.

At one point, a large proportion of the art uploaded to the SCFA was strongly influenced by [[Wikipedia:Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic the Hedgehog]]. Eventually, people got sick of so much derivative artwork, and Sonic-based material was banned, to the complaints of some of those who had been uploading it.
At some point, Rat wanted the site to have it's own domain, previously it was at rat.org/yerf, so Rat chose Yerf, because it was a generic term, so no matter what direction the site took, the name could stay the same. It wasaccepted to mean as a noise foxes made, and yerf.com was not taken, so Rat registered it.

[[Image:Yerf_old.png|right|Yerf]]
=== Yerf ===

The name change to Yerf occured in 1998, but that is all it was, a name change.
Over time, the quality standards got stricter, and artists who were previously members of the SCFA were [[Wikipedia:Grandfather clause|grandfathered]] in, which became a regular cause of complaint for those who either felt that artwork by the grandfathered artists was inadequate, or (more often) people who had been rejected who looked to this art as an excuse to complain about double standards.
When Rat moved to California, he was no longer able to keep his server up, and so it moved to [[Tugrik]]'s purrsia.com server.

On 10 July 1998, Rat [http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.lifestyle.furry/browse_frm/thread/60e8064c8c378d26 handed over] front end administration of the site to [[Scotty Arsenault]] - it had previously been run in part by [[Jedd Marten]]. At some point after that, Scotty handed it over in turn to [[Dingo]].

=== The Crash ===

On 27 December 2004, Yerf's hard disk [http://www.livejournal.com/community/yerf/42523.html signalled a failure]. [http://www.livejournal.com/community/yerf/2005/01/04/ Initial hopes] for a quick fix were soon dashed, and eventually it became clear that all of the data had been [http://www.livejournal.com/community/yerf/55386.html lost], although over $2500 was raised in donations. Worse, the hard disk contained the only copy of the Yerf archive software.

As of August 2005, Yerf is being rebuilt around a new core, the '''Squeeky Clean Art Archive'''. For now, members are allowed to post images on the community LiveJournal instead. The forums have also been re-opened. Once the core is back up, it should be possible to re-post the artwork, as some users had saved copies of the site before the crash.

[[Image:Censor_PG.png|right]]

== Art policy ==

As indicated by the name, the SCFA was always distinguished by a strong [[PG]] focus. Around the time it was relaunched as Yerf, new policies were introduced concerning the ''quality'' of artwork. At first, a large proportion of artists might still have qualified to enter, but the bar has raised over time to a point where even reasonably good artists might face several rejections before being allowed in, if they managed it at all. The long, usually six-month, mandatory wait period to reapply heightened this controversy considerably; some unsuccessful applicants believed this was sometimes applied as a form of punishment for failing to complete an application correctly.

This led to claims of elitism, which were (to an extent) ignored, as the majority of community members supported at least some level of quality filtering. Complaints about the speed of the review process were also frequent, due to the difficulty of getting qualified reviewers who could spare the time and effort to review submissions.
The '''Avatar Archive''' (also known as the '''Furry Art Archive''', being the first of its kind) was an [[Wikipedia:File Transfer Protocol|FTP]] site created by [[S'A'Alis]], as a continuation to [[Steven Stadnicki]]'s [[Tezuka]] FTP server.

* '''Address''': ftp://avatar.snc.edu
* '''Founder''': S'A'Alis
* '''Operational dates''': 1993 - 2000 (with a ~9 month gap in 1997-8)

Initially an FTP server containing most of the operational files, maps and diagrams of the [[FurryMUCK]] site of that time period (which was under the administrative care of S'A'Alis at that time,) it also hosted one of the first [[furry]] art archives known to the fandom. Initially containing [[Wikipedia:Gif|Gif]]s images of the furry players on FurryMuck, it quickly expanded to host any kind of furry imagery.

It had no restrictions on quality or quantity, though it didn't allow outright porn. Being an FTP site it was quite limited in features, for instance, you would have to download the whole picture before being able to view it to see it. Layout wise, it was broken into one directory per letter of the alphabet, depending on the filename. So, if a specific file would start with the letter "S", you would locate it by navigating to the "/pub/furry/images/downloads/s/" directory.

The process to access such file consisted on connecting on to Avatar server by login in as "anonymous", while using your email address as your password. Navigating text wise, the user would then reach the "pub/furry/images/downloads" directory, then dig further to the alphabetically organized subdirectories, finding the desired file by its name (they didn't seperate the art by artist at the time. that honor first being bestow to the [[VCL]] art archive],) and then, downloading it to his or her computer for viewing. Even with all these non-user friendly settings, It was THE place furries would upload their pictures.

The server's address would be eventually transferred to avatar.furry.org way late in its life, where it would stay until went offline. The [[Yerf]] and [[Furnation]] art archives mirrored its contents for a short time.

Avatar archives was an FTP site of furry art that was started in the early 90s by [[S'A'Alis]], who also ran the [[FurryMUCK]] server at that time. The site died a very quiet death in sometime around 2000 after several other sites like Yerf and VCL rendered it obsolete. I think before it was called Avatar, it was called (some japanese sounding name).
It had no restrictions on quality, quantity, though it didn't allow outright porn. Being an FTP site it was quite limited in features, you would have to download the whole picture to see it. But because nothing better existed, it was THE place furries would upload their pictures.

Its address was avatar.snc.edu, and it moved to avatar.furry.org way late in its life, then it finally dissapeared. Yerf had a mirror of it for a short time, and I think so did Furnation.

Avatar was broken into one directory per letter of the alphabet, depending on the filename. So a typical file would live in /pub/furry/images/downloads/s/ if it started with s. They didn't seperate it by artist. VCL started organizing by artist, and so did Yerf from the beginning. Note from Rat: I started Yerf because of Avatar, so we all owe them some props for starting what we take for granted as furry art sites on the net.

== Art policy ==

[[Image:SCFA.png|right|SCFA]]
=== SCFA ===

When Rat moved to California, he was no longer able to keep his server up, and so the service was renamed and moved to [[Tugrik]]'s purrsia.com server.

[[Image:Yerf_old.png|right|Yerf]]
=== Yerf ===

Yerf was launched in 1998 with a new design, and new rules. Artists who were previously members of the SCFA were [[Wikipedia:Grandfather clause|grandfathered]] in, which became a regular cause of complaint for those who either felt that artwork by the grandfathered artists was inadequate, or (more often) people who had been rejected who looked to this art as an excuse to complain about double standards.

On 10 July 1998, Rat [http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.lifestyle.furry/browse_frm/thread/60e8064c8c378d26 handed over] operation of the site to [[Scotty Arsenault]]. At some point after that, he handed it over in turn to [[Dingo]].
Avatar archives was an FTP site of furry art that started in the early 90s, and died a very quiet death in ??? after several other sites like Yerf and VCL rendered it obsolete.

'''Furry art''' or '''anthro art''' (a misnomer, as [[anthro]] means "[[human]]") is a phrase sometimes used to describe artwork depicting [[anthropomorphic]] animal characters. Usually furry art is created with [[furry fandom]] as the main audience, though some works that could be described as "furry art" are intended for a larger, more mainstream audience.

A person who creates furry art is called a ''[[furry artist]]''.

== Defining Traits ==

The most basic and pervasive idiom of furry art is the depiction of [[humanoid]] figures with animal traits: heads, tails, ears, fur, and so on. This isn't always the case: furry artwork can include completely non-humanoid animals whose only anthropomorphic traits might be their facial expressions, dialogue, range of emotions acted out, to the completely opposite end of the spectrum in completely human characters with animal ears and tails attatched to them, as is popular in [[anime]] [[Wikipedia:fanart|fanart]]. Another popular theme in furry art is in the [[transformation]] of people to animals and vice versa, as in [[werewolves]] or other mythical creatures, or in [[science fiction]] devices, such as the use of [[genetic engineering]].

=== Origins in other genres ===

The most commonly accepted theory as to the origination of furry art is that it has its roots in the indie [[Wikipedia:Comics|comics]] and science fiction/fantasy fan culture of the 1980s.

Due to heavy censorship of the comic book industry by the Comics Code Authority in the 1960s and 70s, there was a huge boom in underground comics, and it was during this time that [[Wikipedia:Robert Crumb|Robert Crumb]] began creating the seminal ''[[Wikipedia:Fritz_The_Cat|Fritz the Cat]]'' comics, a sexually graphic story about a cartoon cat, which would later be made into a film by maverick [[Wikipedia:Animation|animation]] director [[Wikipedia:Ralph_Bakshi|Ralph Bakshi]]. ''Fritz the Cat'' came at a time when animation was universally considered to be a children's medium, and perhaps because of this and its aggressive countercultural bent, it met with little critical approval and to this day remains an obscure film outside of animation enthusiast circles.

The underground comics culture gave rise to a wave of independent black and white comics in the 1980s. It was during this time that many of the first [[proto_Furry]] comics and [[APA]]zines began to appear. [[Steve Gallacci]]'s [[Albedo]], Eastman and Laird's [[Wikipedia:Teenage_mutant_ninja_turtles|Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles]], [[Stan Sakai]]'s [[Usagi Yojimbo]], and [[Reed Waller]]'s [[Wikipedia:Omaha_the_Cat_Dancer|Omaha the Cat Dancer]] were among them, many of them now considered to be cornerstones of what was still becoming the furry fandom.

Many of the most prominent furry artists of the 1990s, such as [[Terrie Smith]], [[Daphne Lage]], and [[Tygger Graf]], and even contemporary fan favorite [[Marci McAdam]] all point to [[Wikipedia:Wendy and Richard Pini|Wendy and Richard Pini]]'s popular ''[[Elfquest]]'' series of fantasy comics as a major source of stylistic influence. Though ''Elfquest'' doesn't feature what would normally be considered furry characters, it shares, and is possibly responsible for introducing many ideas popular in furry art and fiction: protagonists who are close to nature and are able to communicate with animals (some of them actually possess [[wolf]] blood), an enormous emphasis on empathy and sentimentality, names such as "Petalwing," "Clearbrook," or "Moonshade" that combine two nature- or color-oriented words into one, the use of human beings as antagonistic characters, and a predilection for mystical, nativist imagery.

Even today, popular fantasy fiction and children's cartoons continue to influence trends in furry art. Witness the enormous popularity of [[Brian Jacques]]' [[:Category:Redwall|Redwall series]] of novels, [[Wikipedia:The Walt Disney Company|Disney]]'s 1994 blockbuster feature [[The Lion King]], Rare Software's [[Star Fox]] series of videogames, or [[Wikipedia:Rumiko Takahashi|Rumiko Takahashi]]'s cartoon [[Wikipedia:Inuyasha|Inuyasha]] among today's furry fan artists.

=== Yeah, but is it Furry? ===

The definition of what should and should not be considered furry is a subject of ongoing controversy. Some individuals favor a definition that includes any and all media that relates to the anthropomorphism of animals, stretching from prehistoric cave paintings to representations of Egyptian gods, to contemporary Warner-Brothers cartoons, to the most lewd and graphic images that can be found on the [[VCL]] can and should all be classified as furry art. Others favor a more exclusive definition, arguing that only those images and media created by individuals who operate within the social boundaries of the furry fandom and whose output is distributed primarily inside of the fandom's channels should be considered to be furry art; and while extracurricular media might be enjoyed by furry fans, it is not furry in and of itself.

The major criticisms of the inclusive definition of furry art are that it is an attempt to justify and elevate fan-oriented output to be equivalent to what is created outside of the fandom (this opinion is predicated of course on the belief that furry art does not qualify for the same level of distinction), and that it trivializes the historical artwork and more mainstream media by the association. Opponents of the exclusive definition argue that it is only used by aggressors and [[troll]]s to diminish and confine furry artwork that might be appropriate for a larger audience and that nobody can know for certain what audience an artist intended his creations for.

Many artists who have been known to attend furry conventions, roleplay as anthropomorphic animals, and represent themselves as such in art are uncomfortable with the "furry" label for various reasons. Instead they prefer to classify their artwork as '[[anthro]],' '[[were]],' or any number of other terms that all mean roughly the same thing but lack whatever negative connotations or baggage they feel might be attatched to furry art that they were trying to avoid.

It should also be noted that there there is a significant portion of people who feel that the distinction is not that important, and that to engage in the argument is a waste of time that might be better spent creating, enjoying, or making fun of the art in question.

== Where to find Furry Art ==

A more appropriate question to ask might be where ''can't'' you find furry art. A Google image search for nearly any kind of animal will usually yield furry art featuring that animal within the first page or two. However, the enterprising fan might have more success finding furry art at any one of the many galleries dedicated to hosting it:

* [[:Category:Art archives|Wikifur category for art archives]]
* The [[VCL]]
* [[Yerf]]
* The [[Orlando Furry Archives]]
* [[YNA]] [http://yna.solfire.com/]

Additionally, many general-purpose or cross-genre public gallery sites host furry artwork and most of them feature specific categories for it:

* [[SheezyArt]]
* [[deviantArt]]
* [[GFXartist]] [http://www.gfxartist.com/]
* [[Art Wanted]] [http://www.artwanted.com/]
* [[Epilogue]] [http://www.epilogue.net/index.html]
* [[Elfwood]] [http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/elfwood.pike]

Furthermore, there are a wealth of livejournal communities dedicated to the creation, discussion, and exchange of furry art. You might find a few examples of those on the [[List_of_furry_LiveJournal_communities|list of furry livejournal communities]].

It is a common practice for artists to create their own individual galleries, hosted on personal website portfolios. If you discover an artist with a style you enjoy, you might follow links around or google their name in order to find their home page and bookmark it. Many artists also appreciate positive feedback from their fans - don't be shy about sending them email to let them know how you feel about their artwork!

== Creating Furry Art ==

One of the trademarks of the furry art community is its inclusivity. Anybody who wants to put a pencil to paper and draw animal people is welcome to do so and can quickly find a place in the furry art scene should they have a mind to, and many of the galleries listed above have no content restrictions, thus making them ideal for beginners to share their work.

If you are unsure of how to begin creating furry art, here is a simple step-by-step how-to:

# Get a pen or pencil and a sheet of paper. Any kind will do.
# Draw whatever it is you have in your head!
# Lather, rinse, repeat.

That's it! That's all there is to it. Don't be afraid of making mistakes, and don't be afraid of what other people might say about your artwork. Just draw, all the time. The best avenue of improvement for the any artist at any skill level is to practice, ''constantly''. Anybody can draw, and the people that are exceptionally skilled artists are so because they are drawing nonstop. Patience and diligence are all it takes!

=== Online resources and tutorials ===

There is a wealth of information useful to artists of all skill levels available at no cost on the internet, a great deal of which is specifically topical to furry art:
