Fur Isle

Katherine: Updated to Category:Cancelled conventions from Proposed

cleanup
copyedit
unref
Fur Isle is a proposed convention, intended to be held on the Isle of Wight, England. Planning, which started in 2013, is by Kitutal.

Origins
The idea for a southern UK convention had been brought up a few times in discussion, without much in the way of results. Fur Isle originated from one such proposal, with preliminary research put into starting on a Sussex based convention in early 2013. Bouncing ideas around in a HantsFurs chat, the suggestion of transporting the event to the Isle of Wight was made, and subsequently ideas for names and logos started coming together, and the number of volunteer staff increased as members of the chat group joined in. Otherwise, the initial planning was kept quiet, with the idea being released to the public in December. This sudden appearance generated a lot of interest, both positive and negative.cn

A plan came together over the following weeks, shortlisted hotel options were narrowed down to a choice of three, of different sizes to cover all eventualities of attendance figures. A successful marketing campaign led to a rapid rise in interest on FurAffinity and Facebook, resulting in most attention being given to the largest venue option, and the potential for further growth in later years. Meanwhile, a mascot design of a brown bat was sketched out, a few preliminary activity ideas were discussed, the Halloween theme and dates confirmed and a bat rescue charity chosen for fundraising efforts, whilst work started on a new, more professional website. Coming into February it was all looking good.

A succession of setbacks followed, the new website remained months behind schedule, and a crowdfund project to help raise the deposit for the hotel gained little interest. The chosen hotel itself requested confirmation of all attendees many months in advance, before ticket sales had opened, and insisted on a much higher than anticipated number of rooms booked to secure the desired exclusive use. The second choice hotel declined the request to book space for the group on the weekend, due to overlap with week long stays by anticipated other guests. Efforts to host a non-residential convention by booking function space in the town proved unsuccessful, and with time running short the decision was made to postpone to the following year.

Seasonal Parties
Rather than disappear entirely for a year, the team behind Fur Isle proposed to run a succession of seasonal events year-round, starting with a beach front Summer Party. It was hoped that doing so would gain the organising team a good reputation for hosting enjoyable events, show off the highlights of the island location, and help reach more potential convention attendees through word-of-mouth, maintaining a position in the public attention to keep interest up, as well as allowing staff to gain further experience at organising different sized and style activities.

Ultimately, this ambition was not to be. A mis-communication led to two virtually identical Summer Parties being planned by different members of staff on successive weekends. Though eventually one party was suspended and its attendees directed to the other, turn-out was lower than expected, and criticism was raised of the handling of the situation. Meanwhile, a number of key staff on the team either lost interest, with the convention dates moved so far away, or found they had to direct all their attention to other matters, with no time to spare for something like organising a convention.

The schedule at that time included a fancy-dress Halloween party at a local pub, a Winter party with a main focus on furry fandom musical talents, Spring activities hosted in a rural location with plenty of outdoor fun and games, and another, larger, Summer beach party. By the time of the Halloween party, most staff were largely inactive, and actual turnout at the event was even lower. Suggested to be in part due to running on a Friday afternoon, on the day of a popular public holiday, it also became apparent that the travel time and cost of reaching the island was much more of an issue with single day activities than a larger, longer convention. The end of 2014 marked a low-point for the Fur Isle project, in response to low attendance and increasing costs of rooms, equipment and travel for each successive event, the remaining seasonal parties were suspended, with the comment made that some of the ideas proposed would be absorbed into mainland HantsFurs furmeets instead.

Fur Isle 2015
The convention returned the following year, with posts to social media and furry forums starting up again around February. Ticket sales were scheduled to open on March 21st, and the website was redesigned to support this. Over the following few months, a succession of announcements were made regarding the plans for the 2015 convention.

Dates - The convention was scheduled to run from Friday November 6th through to Monday November 9th, following the decision to avoid competing with Halloween itself, and an offer of a discount rate for the group on those dates.

The venue - A booking was confirmed at the Villa Mentone hotel in Shanklin, a couple of miles down the coast from the original choice of venue, a small, beach front location with a maximum occupancy of 65 guests.

Registration pricing - Set at £45 per person for attendance only or £140 per person inclusive of accomodation and food. The low £32 a night for bed, breakfast and dinner is used as one of the convention's key selling points, more than offsetting any travel cost to and from the island.

Terms of Service and Code of Conduct - following discussion with other furs and a number of questions raised about various issues, these rules and requirements were codified and provided in full on the website.

Timetable - A rough timetable provided an outline of planned activities, but with some spaces left open, and room for flexibility.

Theme - The previously planned theme of Halloween would be reused, even though the convention fell on the following weekend. An announcement was made that the convention's Theming Director would be working to decorate the venue appropriately.

Charity - The returning convention would renew its fundraising relationship with the local Bat Rescue Hospital, raising money in support of their efforts over the full four days, and proposing that staff, and possibly animals, from the charity visit the convention and meet attendees.

Further announcements are still anticipated over the coming months, including Dealers Den, Art Show, Music events (including a vaguely referenced major musical concert on the Saturday night), Guest of Honour and the remaining pieces of the timetable.

Cancellation
In mid-October, approximately three weeks before the event, Kitutal cancelled the event.

2016 and Beyond
It has been made clear that plans are underway for a second year of the convention, to be held in October of 2016, and running annually from then on, dependent on the success of the first iteration. The 2015 convention has been referred to as a 'trial run' with the suggestion that it would have a much lower attendance and be considerably simplified compared to subsequent years. As yet, there has been no official word on details for the 2016 convention, though anticipated growth would make continued use of the small Villa Mentone hotel unsustainable.

Criticism
Fur Isle and its staff have received criticism since first going public with the plans, with concerns raised over the limited experience of convention organising by senior staff, having only run local meets before, a number of furs across the country have expressed interest in sitting out the inaugural convention, and determine based on its results whether to attend in subsequent years. As well, the choice of location has raised questions and polarised opinions. Some observers felt that the increased time and cost of travel, though more than offset by group discounts and lower accommodation costs arranged by the convention, was unnecessary and problematic, whilst others expressed strong interest in attending a convention at a well loved, traditional holiday spot and more interesting choice of location. Meanwhile, many furs in the north of the country were disappointed to find themselves unable to attend due to the considerable travel distance. Following a proposal, it has been suggested that votes will be taken on a variety of island and mainland venues for the convention's second year.

Subsequently, the event organization was more active in seeking out the opinions, positive or otherwise, of local furs, asking around on their various social networking sites, first on Ask.fm, later on the discussion forum on the newly rebuilt event website, posting a forum thread asking for opinions on these issues, specially the change of locations, citing it as the most common complaint received. The increased travel cost of the ferry crossing concern prompted the committee to investigate coach hire as a cheaper alternative.cn

Retrieved January 29, 2013</ref> The following year, CPFM was moved to Lake Afton, Kansas. Being closer to Wichita and easier to get to, the 2011 event saw an increased attendance.

In 2012, CPFM organizers Merkindesr and Dale Fox decided to keep the event at Lake Afton, and rented a pavilion to better serve their attendees. Seeing yet another surge in attendance, Merk and Dale announced that they would henceforth be creating a hotel-based convention in downtown Wichita, and thus was the Central Plains Fur Meet established.

Katherine:

Paul S. Gibbs was one of the creators of the Freighter Tails comic strip, as well as author of several pieces of The Secret of NIMH fanfiction. Paul passed away on January 31st, 2002.

He wrote a number of short stories and novels about the Sah'aarans, an alien felinoid race that was his own fictional creation. Gibbs created the Sah'aarans after receiving censorship for posting elaborate and expansive stories featuring the Star Trek: The Animated Series character Shiboline M'Ress, in which she married her longterm friend from her Starfleet Academy days. These stories included 'M'Ress: A 'Star Trek' Story', 'Commodore M'Ress' and 'The Takeover'.

Talk:Furry Party

2016-10-21T05:20:32Z

Katherine: If you don't believe in documenting an event from 28 years ago, then don't.

This Furry Party vs all the hundreds of Furry Party that have transpired before and after it:
*Was it the first one, earning the right to the name?. It's 1998, parties have occurred since the early 80s
*Is it a constant Party that occurs yearly?. Wording sez once held
*Does it occur at different venues as a single controlled party?. Again, once.
*Anything special occurred that merits to be named the Furry Party over all others?. Article doesn't indicate so
*Is the name Furry Party trademarked and used only for this event?. Doesn't indicate as such again...

Unless a good reason it's given, this was a one time event, non-repeated. Just another furry party, with no earmarks to
be given its own Wikifur article over other past/future Furry Parties. Will be given a few days to make its case, otherwise
it will be deleted as non-notable within furry lore. - Spirou (talk) 21:59, 20 October 2016 (EDT)

unref
copyedit
Descent is a novel by Phil Geusz, published by Legion Printing in 2010.

It is a typical Geusz tale, in that its central theme is growth and empowerment through self-acceptance, Descent is the story of Crown Prince Gregory Lomabard. Gregory, heir to the throne of the Guild of Sorcerers and the proud owner of a 1968 Dodge Dart GTS convertible, is due to ascend to the throne at perhaps the most crucial moment in the entire history of the Guild. But someone's cursed him to become a rabbit instead, in both body and mind.

The work's title derives from a series of descents, both literal and metaphorical, that mark the protagonist's adventures as he seeks to learn the who and why of it all. Chief among these is his descent into animalhood, as bit by bit both his body and mind contort themselves into a new lapine reality.

Descent was first written in about 1999, and was one of Geusz's earliest novels. Published in 2010,

History
The pride was founded in the Kopje Valley by Kwasi and Nalia in 1996. After Kwasi's murder, their adopted son Siombe took over the pride until he moved to the Celestial Volcano and passed the lands to Kwasi and Nalia's son Mohatu.

Mohatu reigned with a small pride until moving to Utatu in 1999. Mohatu offered his adopted son, Jumoja, the Kopje lands. Thus Jumoja and his mate K'aaria, both adolescents, became heirs to the Kopje Valley. They lived there until nearly adult, when they died together in a hunting accident.

The pride "drift[ed] away during the following months", and even other inhabitants of the lands, such as the Serval Fevra, Nalia's adopted daughter, left as well. The lands became deserted.

The lands had occasional RP (such as during the Kumalo plot) but were uninhabited until May 18, 2006, when Siombe and Balana reestablished a pride made up of Balana's children, a few who broke off of the Natamba pride, and a couple of lionesses they picked up in Utatu.

On July 23, 2007, the pride was OOCly made an official pride, with Mzohari named as its lion king. ICly, rulership passed from Siombe to Mzohari on July 24 in a small mantlement ceremony, with a total of 13 characters in attendance.

On December 3, 2009, Kasjari was named Queen with Korzar as the pride's heir.

Location
The initial location of the Kopje Valley is unclear, though they were accessible via a path leading from the Celestial Volcano north of the Pride Lands starting in late 1996. When Utatu was built in 1998, the valley was still linked to the Celestial Volcano lands, but its edge became linked to the southern edge of Utatu. It remained this way until an unknown time when a copy of the lands were linked to Utatu and the original became unlinked. They were unlinked when re-inhabited in May 2006, but were linked to the eastern border of the Pride Lands in October 2006, where they are currently.

Monarchs
* 1996-1996 - Kwasi (King) and Nalia (Queen)

Natamba

2012-07-15T16:58:32Z

Katherine: Results of typing prides 2 while connected to The Lion King MUCK.

The Natamba is a fictional role-played pride on The Lion King MUCK that existed in the Golden Lands from May 2002-March 2005 and the Uzima Valley from April 2006-present.

Kings
* 2002-January 2008 - Tahzhoo
* January 2008-2012 - Ghedi and Sumi
* 2012 - Ryngia

Philosophy
As described in the official pride information, "The Natamba pride is a hospitable and tolerant pride [...] They have neither a strict hierarchy nor border guards, and they share their water and life with everyone carrying peace in their heart and truth on their tongue. By that, Uzima Valley has become a home for many refugees."

History
The Natamba pride was founded by Tahzhoo in the Golden Lands in 2002. (Their previous owner, Balana, was toaded in February and he found himself in possession of the lands.) He had been living in his homeland of Uzima Valley since he came home and found his parents dead, eventually leaving them once he reached adulthood. Wandering took him to the Golden Lands where he was going to visit Nyanya and Balana, who he had come to know as a youth, but he found the lands abandoned. (This was due to a fire that had happened some time prior, ending Nabana's rule.) He set out to find others like himself who were lonely, and formed a small pride who ultimately came to settle in the Golden Lands and be known as the Natamba pride. Natamba means "Those who have found each other."

They stayed there until another fire broke out in 2005, where they were living homeless in Utatu for about a month, and then moved back to Tahzhoo's homeland, the Uzima Valley, following the final battle of the Kumalo conflict.

A large part of the pride broke away in May 2006 to reform the Kopje Valley Pride, which nearly saw the end of the Natamba, but it managed to stick it out and recover afterwards. Tahzhoo stepped down in January 2008 to his heirs, sons Ghedi and Sumi.

By July 2012 the king was Ryngia.

Location
The Golden Lands are about a day's travel to the southwest of the Pride Lands. The Uzima Valley is located just to the west of the Pride Lands.
