'''''Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures''''', also known as '''''DMFA''''', is a [[furry]] [[web comic]] by [[Amber Williams]]. It is divided into arcs (subplots) of variable length. It updates three times a week, normally on Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday. The first five arcs are in black and white. Starting in the middle of the sixth arc, the comic has been in color. The comic is partially based off of the online game [[Furcadia]] and several of the main characters are based off of the [[artist]]'s friends there (it was originally titled ''Dan and Mab's Furcadian Adventures'').

DMFA was a runner-up in the 2005 [[Wikipedia:Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards|Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards]] for ''Outstanding Anthropomorphic Comic''.<ref>[http://www.ccawards.com/2005.htm The 2005 Cartoonists' Choice Awards]</ref>

In September 2005, the comic's site was hacked. The title was replaced with "Some Stupid Webcomic" and most of the homepage links were redirected to http://www.cvrpg.com/ . On September 21 the site was restored with a new layout and it was revealed that the "hacking" had been a prank by Amber and her brother Mike.

The comic as a whole is rated PG, although the ''Abel's Story'' [[Wikipedia:Story arc|arc]] (starting on 15 October 2005) is rated NC-14. The [[DMFA Radio Project]], founded in July 2005, provides an unofficial voiced version of much of the comic.

== Origins of DMFA ==

DMFA began in 1998, when Amber promised a shrine of sorts on Furcadia to anyone who could find a particular song for her. When a friend who went by the name of Daniel Ti'Fiona found the song in question, Amber made good on her promise and created the shrine. As a joke, she added a sign proclaiming "Coming soon: the Misadventures of Daniel Ti'Fiona, the comic!" However, Daniel took this seriously and continually prodded her to actually start the comic until she finally gave in, posting the first comic in 1999.

Initially featuring Daniel and Miss Mab, the cast of the comic soon expanded, including both friends of Amber's on Furcadia and characters of her own creation. Later on in 1999, the comic fell into a hiatus for about a year. Amber resumed comic production in 2000, and the comic has been updating steadily ever since.

=== Abel's Story ===

Abel's Story began in October 2005 as a result of a donation drive in which fans donated towards either Abel's or Regina's backstory.<ref>[http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Arch_WW.php Wallpaper Wars]. Accessed 26 May, 2009.</ref> part one of the bonus arc, ''Summer of Youth'', reached 109 pages while part two, ''Break'', is on going.

== Premise ==
{{spoiler}}
The comic's arcs revolve around the adventures and misadventures of the cast. Most of these exploits are whimsical and humorous, sometimes parodying aspects of [[wikipedia:popular culture|popular culture]]. Most events occur in a fictional land called Furrae; specifically, in an inn/pub called [[Lost Lake]] (based off of the real Lost Lake in Furcadia).

Kasarn: add MGF's use of the term

'''Skunkfucker''' is the earliest known derogatory term to define a [[furry fan]] or [[furry artist|artist]].

==History==
This term came to be in the early 1980s at popular [[Wikipedia:Sci-fi|Sci-fi]] [[convention]]s like [[Wikipedia:Worldcon|WorldCon]], by [[science fiction]] fans who looked on [[furries]] attending their cons as both intruding and beneath contempt. This view did not improve when the earliest examples of sexualized [[furry art]] and stories started to appear at the scene.

As described by Sci-fi/[[Anime]]/Furry connoisseur [[Fred Patten]], early use of the word was as a defacement of [[furry party]] signs posted at these conventions (including the ones hosted by one of [[furry fandom]]'s founding members, [[Mark Merlino]]). The act would consist of swiping down the signs, or just crossing the word "Furry," with ones that would read ''"This way to the <s>furry</s> '''Skunkfucker''' party,"'' an act also confirmed by artist [[Marc Schirmeister]] (who was also a Sci-fi fan and artist.)

The term used to be a well-known, demeaning vocal identifier by a wide array of fandoms, "mundanes" and [[anti-furries]], but has largely fallen out of common usage. As a note of historical interest provided by Fred Patten, '''Foxfucker''' was another Sci-fi used term for furries but never caught on.

==Trivia==
* The title of ''[[Skunk (comic)|Skunk]]'' (the comic) is an abbreviation for this term.
* Australian band [[Wikipedia:Machine Gun Fellatio|Machine Gun Fellatio]] used the term in the song ''Horny Blonde Forty''.

'''MiDFur''' is short for '''Melbourne in December Fur Meet''', an event that has been held annually since 1999 in [[Wikipedia:Melbourne|Melbourne]], [[Wikipedia:Victoria (Australia)|Victoria]], [[Wikipedia:Australia|Australia]]. Traditionally, the [[furmeet]] takes place in 'MiD'-December, two weeks before Christmas.

==History==
===Origins===
MiDFur was originally [[Atpaw]]'s planned December 1999 meet-up of five [[furries|furs]] scattered around Australia. From Melbourne, [[Alpha X-ray]]. From [[wikipedia:Newcastle, New South Wales|Newcastle]], Atpaw and [[Sepharen]]. From [[wikipedia:Adelaide|Adelaide]], [[TimberFox]] and finally, from [[wikipedia:Brisbane|Brisbane]], [[Whyrl]].

During the course of planning, 'MiDFur' was decided upon to identify the event and word spread of the small private meet-up. However, as the time of the convention grew near, the founders began to withdraw from attendance due to real-life commitments, until all five had pulled out. A furry named [[Muse]] volunteered to step in and take up the reins. Since then, a different furry has organised the meet each year. However, none of the original founders of MiDFur attended the event they set into motion for several years.

Since then, planning of the event has become increasingly open to the public, mostly discussed on the [[OzFurry (mailing list)|Ozfurry mailing list]] and [[SAFurs.org|SA Furs discussion forum]]. Four of the five founders did end up attending MiDFur, though rarely in the same year.

===MiDFur 2006===
MiDFur 2006 was organised by [[Scrapper]] and was held from December 15 to 17 with a "[[plushie]]" theme. About 55 [[fur]]s were booked for the opening night feast.<ref>[http://www.safurs.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41 ''MiDfur Dinner – URGENT''] by [[Tech Wolfox]] at [[SAFurs.org]]</ref> The event concluded with the [[South Fur Lands]] Binding Party, where awards were presented for different categories of plushies. Two different t-shirts were made available; one of them featured a colour design by [[Mye]].

===MiDFur 2007===
In 2007, organisation of MiDFur was again headed by [[Scrapper]], with other furs – [[Byftpup]], [[ArcticPete]], and [[Firey]] – organising parts of the event. It was held on the 14th to the 16th of December 2007. 127 furries attended the Friday dinner, which broke previous dinner attendance records. MiDFur shirts (featuring art by [[MistyStriker]]), hoodies, and lanyards were made available to attendants for purchase.

===MiDFur X (2008)===
MiDFur X took place 12-15 December 2008;<ref>''[http://www.furry.org.au/mailman/private/ozfurry/2007-December/016464.html Announcing... MiDFur X, 12-15th Dec 2008!]'' on the [[OzFurry (mailing list)|OzFurry mailing list]]</ref> it was the first instance of MiDFur to be a [[convention]] rather than simply a meet. A comprehensive registration cost AU$195, providing access to a variety of events including a trip to the [[Wikipedia:Eureka Tower|Eureka Tower]] Sky Deck and the [[Wikipedia:Melbourne Zoo|Melbourne Zoo]], two dinners, and a [[Wikipedia:Ball (dance)|gala ball]].<ref>''[http://www.midfur.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?p=472#p472 MiDFur X Announcements]'' - [[Arctic Pete]], MiDFur forums (30 March 2008)</ref>

The guests were [[2]] and [[Uncle Kage]], [[Paul Kidd]] and [[Zaen Kreecha]].<ref>''[https://www.anthrocon.org/node/2063 MiDFur, Australias First ever convention Announcements]'' - [[ArcticPete]], [[Anthrocon]] forums (19 February 2008)</ref> The event attracted 177 attendees in total, selling out the 150-person ballroom dance and raising over $3840 for the [[Wikipedia:RSPCA|RSPCA]].
'''Nature Anthem''' is a song and music video by [[Wikipedia:Grandaddy|Grandaddy]]. It was initially included as a bonus music video on their third studio album from 2003, [[Wikipedia:Sumday|''Sumday'']], referred to as ''Nacher Anthem'' in the included booklet. The song was not a playable track on the album, being only accessible through the music video file.

In 2004 a more polished version was released, featured on the [[Wikipedia:Below the Radio|''Below The Radio'']] compilation and also released as a single ([[Wikipedia:Nature Anthem|''Nature Anthem'']]). Here the spelling changed from ''Nacher Anthem'' to ''Nature Anthem''. This new version has become the official version of the song and was overdubbed onto the original music video, creating some problems with synchronization.

The music video features a large number of people in [[fursuits]] dancing in the woods, and was directed by Matt Burke. The later version of the music video is available several places online.

The song has featured in two television advertising campaigns, for the [[Wikipedia:Honda Civic Hybrid|Honda Civic Hybrid]] car (2005) and [[Wikipedia:Coca-Cola|Coca-Cola]] (2006).
== Breaking up is hard to do ==

Okay, so in regards to whether it ought to be broken up... I figured it'd be useful if someone looking for info on this subject would have it all on one page, so we didn't end up with a buttload of teeny articles.

As for the name, I just thought, "What would a user instinctively enter into the Search bar if they were looking for this?" Admittedly, "Furry references in webcomics" probably would have been better, and if we change the name and add a redirect, we'll have both off them covered. [[User:Octan|Octan]] 19:07, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I think this stands as it is.. most of these comics arent at all related to the fandom, Id be glad to see [[PvP]] and [[Penny Arcade]] rolled into this article, not the other way around.. that would make our coverage in webcomics easier to track for fans. Perhaps rename it "webcomic coverage" too, part of Internet coverage. If all this would make the article too long then go ahead and split it

VGCats did a piece for Movie Comics with a very brief slight: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/movedcomics/021207.jpg Also Sluggy Freelance had a short joke on the fandom: http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=031002 ~ Downspin
::Panel 8, where Ramsoomair's character is called a 'damned furry', and he stomps off.. notice how the fight picks up after that. ~ Downspin

== More then just webcomics? ==

Furry is referenced in more then just webcomics online, just like Bonus Stage is listed at the end. An example I could think of is [[wikia:c:yugioh:Yu-Gi-Oh:_The Abridged Series|Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series]], which references furries in episode 12. Mabye this article should be split into webcomics and other online media. Just a thought, though. --[[User:MiffTheFox|Miff Falden]]([[User Talk:MiffTheFox|tlk]]|[[furry:User:MiffTheFox|fur]]) 02:28, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
:I believe creating a single article "[[media coverage]]" which would be the hub for all articles related to webcomics/websites/animation/newspapers/neural links could do the trick. Kind of like Wikipedia's "List of...". -- [[Mikael Grizzly]], the cougar too lazy to log in.

::There's already [[:Category:Media coverage]] and [[Timeline of media coverage]], so I don't think a media coverage article is the answer. While I like looking at the article (Webcomics that reference Furry), I think it's probably a good idea to move the info to [[Timeline of internet coverage]] and the various articles in [[:Category:Internet coverage]]. --[[User:EarthFurst|EarthFurst]] 12:24, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

:Well, it's now made its way into [http://www.comics.com/comics/hedge/archive/hedge-20070621.html a syndicated comic strip], so clearly ''something'' ought to be done. I would recommend (1) splitting up this article, (2) splitting the "media coverage" category into fiction (like CSI) and news items/magazine articles, and (3) sticking all the new articles under the fiction subcategory. [[User:Octan|Octan]] 23:06, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

::I don't agree that separating out fiction rather than factual or description coverage is the way to go, at least not in the [[Timeline of media coverage]]. I'm inclined to continue to place references in webcomics into the [[Timeline of internet coverage]], and simiarly to put any further references in syndicated comics into the Timeline of media coverage. At any rate, I do think this badly needs to be split into separate WikiFur articles (some of the items, indeed, already are described in articles I believe); it's hardly a readable list with a paragraph for each item. -- [[User:Sine|Sine]] 19:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

== order ==

The sections of “List of webcomics that reference furry” didn't seem to be in any order (so I put Diesel Sweeties at the top .. it coming before Penny Arcade alphabetically). The other sections are not in alphabetical order, but I think they should be (until a decision gets made on where to have this webcomic info). And they're not in chronological order (section 'start' dates are 2002, 2002, 2005, unknown (''Deep Fried''), 2003, 2006, 2004, 2003, 1999, unknown (''Bonus Stage''), unknown (''Animals Have Problems Too''). --[[User:EarthFurst|EarthFurst]] 02:24, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

== Zebra Girl ==

I remember furries being referenced twice (once was a furry convention being hell or something, and once as a warning to someone who was an anthropomorphic animal), but I couldn't find them, so I thought if someone else wanted to track them down and add them to the page I might as well leave a note about it on the discussion page.

== Problems with variable/value inheritance ==

I can't seem to get any pages to inherit the 'bot' state from their parent (that is, the page they were linked from). The reason could lie within the fact that the pages linked from it are given in this format: '/wiki/pagetitle' rather than this one: '/index.php?title=pagetitle', and from what I gather the 'bot mode' only works if the URL is shown in the latter format (I guess this has to do with PHP-applets and stuff, which I honestly don't have a clue how works :).
* Link to the article from another article, then click the red link (do it in a preview or in the sandbox if you don't want the link to last)

:It is under the artist's copyright. The cropping is a trivial modification that does not affect this. However, most commissions operate under the (often implicit) agreement that the image may be used by the commissioner to represent the character concerned, at least in non-profit ways. You should use the <nowiki>{{fursona}}</nowiki> tag on the image description page to signify this.
== How to prevent someone from editing my Wikifur page ==

Someone who appears to have a vendetta against me because of a comment I made in his LJ is putting this quote on the Wikifur page I created that I've tried to remove, only for him to constantly put it back. How can I block him from editing my page? Thanks.

--[[User:Jeremy, the Duke of Otterland|Jeremy, the Duke of Otterland]]

:Firstly, please be aware that it is not "your page". It is "the page about you". The page which is "your page" is [[User:Jeremy, the Duke of Otterland]], which is typically written in the first person by you, and will generally only be edited in situations where someone is specifically causing a problem or is making a personal attack on another contributor. The page ''about'' you is written by in the third person by '''everyone'''. The plus side is that it has some appearance of impartiality, and with some cause . . . because the downside is that it reflects people's opinions of you, which may not always be to your credit.

:The best way to avoid this is to avoid deliberately pissing other people off so they don't feel the need to raise an issue about it in the first place. :-) Failing that, note your objection on the discussion page attached to the article, and others can figure out how best to present the appropriate information while retaining a [[Wikipedia:Neutral point of view|neutral]]. We can usually figure out a way that works for everyone.

:I've made an edit that makes it clear that the quote is a reference for a specific part of the article, and linked it with appropriate text. Perhaps this is a good solution for this particular problem?

:Personally, I don't feel politics is much to do with [[furry fandom]], and would prefer to keep it out of the site as much as possible. There are [[wikia:c:Campaigns|other places for that]].

== Untitled! comic article. ==

Hello, I'm the creator of the webcomic ''[[Untitled!]]'' and I don't particularly want it listed on this site. Is there any way I can have the article removed?
--13:10, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

:Hi there! In a few words: No, because it's a public work of interest to the furry community, but if you don't want your real name there you can replace it with a fan name.

:In more words: Our policy is that past or present public creative works that appear to relate to [[furry fandom]] should be listed, regardless or whether or not the creator is a member (past or present) of the fandom or associated communities, and regardless of the author's wishes. Looking at it (and having read it in the past), I would say it meets these criteria.

:We '''do''' have a [[WikiFur:Personal information|personal information policy]] that relates to information about yourself (such as your real name, who you are, and where you live). If you wish to be excluded under this policy, or to request that the page about you be editable only by yourself and administrators (see the policy for details) then you may request that separately. Given the anonymous nature I would request that you send an email to greenreaper AT hotmail DOT com confirming it from an account that can be identified as yours (such as your yahoo account) if you wish this.

:The policy runs into problems when it comes to identifying comics, as it seems inappropriate to list a comic without reference to its author. This has been discussed previously at [[Talk:Guardian Knights]]. However if you do not want your real name listed on this website you could replace it with a fan name that is known as yours - twapa, for example. The intention of this would be that people could find out your contributions to the fandom, but people who are not members of the fandom would not find the page by searching from your real-life name.

:I hope this answers the above. If you have further questions, feel free to reply here or to email me. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 13:34, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

:Also, I would note that if any of the information is inaccurate or incomplete, you are welcome to correct or add to it - we have no policy against comic creators making contributions to the articles about the comics, or about themselves. I ''would'' request that you do not remove accurate information other than as specified above. :-) --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 13:41, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
... Fine, whatever. Leave the article up. I don't care. *rolls eyes*.
== Furry forum links ==

Hi...I was wondering how I can get my forum hotlinked here like Yiffy.net's is please?

:Hi there! Do you mean you want a page like the one linked here: [[Yiffy.net]]? You can do this by creating a page for the name of the forum that you are on. The [[Help:Editing|editing help page]] tells you how to go about this (the third item down). You should make sure to click the edit button on the Yiffy.net page and look at how it is constructed, as this will help you make a page about your own site. Note that if you want it to be put in the [[:Category:Forums|forums category]], you must put <nowiki>[[Category:Forums]]</nowiki> at the bottom of the page you create.

== FuzzBall Muck related commands? ==

I noticed that some articles (specifically [[Age-locked]]) reference fairly common MUCK commands ([[@lock]], [[exit]]s), but there are no articles created for such. Would it be appropriate to copy from the original helpfiles, if an appropriate credit is given? Or would it be better to paraphrase or write something almost entirely from scratch? Just trying not to plagarize. [[User:Shira|Shira]] 04:29, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:All text that goes on WikiFur is licensed under the [[GFDL]]. If you don't own the copyright to the text concerned, and it is not already licensed as such and has not been placed in the public domain, then unfortunately it is not legal for you to submit it. I would suggest writing it from scratch - that way, at least we're ''sure'' it's perfectly legal. :-) --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 04:36, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:: Hmm... would that fall under the "webspace provider" clause of [[WikiFur:What WikiFur is not]]?

:::"Webspace provider" is really intended to avoid people making their homepages here, using us as an image gallery, etc. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 06:08, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:: I'm not saying that this proposed article(s) is/are a bad idea, I'm just curious at what point do we draw the line between an article about MUCK commands, and something that looks like a technical reference unique to this Wiki? --[[User:Dmuth|Douglas Muth]] 04:46, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

::: Well, I did a bit of looking around, and [http://www.rdwarf.com/users/mink/muckman/index.html MINK's mirror of the FuzzballMUCK manual] says that it "may be freely copied, distributed, quoted, and archived," but I can understand why having articles for individual commands is getting into a grey area.. it's something that is furry-related, as MUCKs are quite common, but also has resources available online. Even more confusing, at least for me, is that some other slightly technical MUCK-related things (ie [[Action]]s) have pages that seem to add little that wouldn't be explained in that help file, while others lack any information at all within WikiFur. I just am unsure which is the better course of action here. [[User:Shira|Shira]] 05:12, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:::It ''is'' a valid concern that we don't want to be a MUCK reference guide (do we? I think the ones that exist are sufficient . . .). However, the fact that they have been included in an article suggests that they are of particular interest in relation to that article. We could try linking directly to a MUCK reference, or we could build our own articles specifically for those entries. I think the latter is preferable with a focus on the encyclopediaic aspect - for example, ''why'' you might age-lock a room, the history of how that feature came about, etc. It could then link to the documentation. That seems to be the best approach. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 06:08, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

I was alerted that a page was created without my knowledge or authorization regarding my persona, Flinthoof. I request that the entry be removed and all links in WikiFur that refer to the character name be removed / blocked. I do not wish to be associated with WikiFur or any of the ads being listed in the sidebar (mostly for pornography, sexual fetishes, and other unsavory things).
I'm guessing that Google can't do more focussed ads, as the article is rather short.
I'm a complete wiki-virgin and I'm just feeling my way around right now, so if anything is wrong or needs fixing, or if anybody notices something odd and wants to elbow me, then great... but I need someone putting their finger on the exact fault otherwise I'm not going to see it. Thanks Rayne, I'm quite happy about having the page split like it is... was wondering about ABC Island, is it "furry enough"
: Hi again, Wolfie. After looking through it just now, I think this article's subject is less furry-related than I originally thought it to be (I didn't know that ABC Island was owned by the [[wikipedia:Australian Broadcasting Corporation|ABC]]). To be honest, I think that this article should be redirected to the [[wikia:c:secondlife|Second Life Wikia]], which has quite a larger compendium of info on the islands in Second Life. To the best of my knowledge, WikiFur only covers SL groups and islands for as long as the groups and islands are predominately furry-oriented in some way. --[[User:RayneVanDunem|RayneVanDunem]] 04:51, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Rayne, I noticed your bullet editing and used that also... I just need to understand what to type to make stuff happen. So I have added details about the Admins and as you can see, there are quite a few furry members. Furries also come and use the sandbox quite often
generally because they feel safe there (we're pretty strict)... But still, as long as the
Island could have a wiki home somewhere, it really doesn't matter where it is.
Some false accusations suggesting that blood-drinking or other violent activities take place were primarily based upon the red and black scheme of the group's original website. (citation needed)"
<BR>Reasons: aside from citation needed-it accuses a group of illegal activity.
If this is supposedly going on, police, NOT online wiki pages should be informed.
It is also CLEARLY an advert for the werelist, claiming itself to be "popular and reliable", neither of which claim can realistically be proven.
<BR>There is NO documentation of this EVER happening anywhere:
"Such groups are often known to prey upon new therians, especially cults, who kidnap and kill therians quite a bit."
:I have removed the recent edits that take away the NPOVness of the article, what little of it there is. However, I have let the references stay and sit. As far as The Werelist goes, by my own information, which is limited, it is one of the most heavily trafficked and comprehensive sites, as well as free, that I can find on therianthropy. So such a claim could be REASONABLY accurate. Nevertheless, I have toned down the tone. On the same token, I'd like to request you do so too. WikiFur is not a KoolAid stand. It's not a place for detailed touting of your beliefs, neither is it a place to advertise to come on over. I would suggest a massive rewrite be done by a neutral third party. For the record, according to my dictionary, a cult is defined as "a religion or sect considered to be unorthodox or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader." If the shoe fits, wear it. Frankly, I believe that any religion that "sells" its mysteries for easy payments, call now, to be bumpkus. This includes TV evangelists, before you start citing them. Religion and faith and knowledge should be freely available to the masses. No charge. But that is my own personal opinion and addendum and has nothing related to my administration here, as I am required to take a neutral stance here in my duties. --[[User:KendricksRedtail|Kendricks Redtail]] 17:43, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
:Once again, you have COMPLETELY ignored what I said: CULTS KILLING/KIDNAPPING THERIANS IS NOT RELEVANT, No one has ever made a serious claim of Therian Temple doing this. I will not discuss this in relation to Therian Temple, as it is not related as Therian Temple DOES NOT kill/kidnap therians and is not being accused of it.
:Also, It is good that we both agree that there has never been, and never will be a war between the Vampires and Therians. I was simply becoming annoyed at the fact that you make the claim that you have been accused of "Drinking Blood" as if it is such a bad thing. (I would also like to note that, most vampires do not drink blood, and may also feed off of sadness, sexual energy, pain, and thought. the ones who DO drink blood, either take a small amount from willing donors or from raw steak. I drink blood from raw steak, as it's not wholesome to consume human blood.)
:While, as I said, it is not common to drink blood, I am sure that there are were-vampire bats and such who have a desire and , seeing as there is nothing wrong with it, give in to the urge to drink blood. Many therians (wolves, foxes, and big-cats namely) have also noted that while they do feel sorry for the dead animal, in a spiritual way, they also have the urge to eat roadkill. They of course, don't give in to this, but still have it the same.
:also, I am aware of, yet do not care about, the Vampire Temple (which I actually heard of just after I made my last statement, and is supposedly part of the same scam as Therian Temple) is not a commonly accepted group within the vampire culture, and all the same, Isee them as having as much authority/relevance as Therian Temple. I would also note that it is NOT the only Vampire related religion.
:I would discuss why I continuously say "Scam" with you, but I am currently making such large responses to your pointless and irrelevant arguments, that I am not going to say what would make my response twice as large.
:I am also very confused as to why there would be a "Therian Religion" as you say, as Therianthropy in itself has little to do with Theology, and has nothing about gods, magic, holy powers, prayer, etc. I am MonoTheistic, Conservative-Jewish, I have no problem with being Jewish AND Therian at the same time.
:As to your claimed "therianthropy", I seriously doubt that you are a therian. can you explain anything regarding it? Therianthropy is not just some religion, you do not simply take the "oath of Therion" (which I still don't understand what it is supposed to be... Therion is a Wolf constellation...). Therianthropy is a random Mental/Spiritual condition, it is not easy to change whether or not someone is one, if it's possible at all... but if you are going to continue to make this claim, I guess that I will leave it at this statement.
This entire argument is pointless. It has nothing to do with the matter at hand. We shouldn't be continuing with a set of arguments completely unrelated to the matter at hand. so whatever. Sooner or later we have to agree on something, and I'm going to stop with the bullshit and try and get this back to a discussion instead of a pointless argument about nothing.
Here is a list of things we probably agree on:
* Therian and Furry aren't the same. this article really doesn't belong on WikiFur.
* Newly Discovered Therians really don't need to see this. Stuff like this is only for long-time serious therians. as you yourself said, you don't want people who are "just looking", you want Therians who know what they are doing.
* Therian Temple is not very well respected in the community. We can agree on this I'm sure. Maybe the things said about it aren't always true, but most people don't like it.
* This IS important. Therian Temple IS note worthy. I know about it, Werelist knows about it, "Codeine's Mum" may even know about it. We can't say it's nothing, no matter how many/few members it has, most have heard of it.
* The Criticisms section is bullshit. Anyone who thinks that Therian Temple members drink blood has been stuffing something up their nose. Nobody worth asking seriously thinks that and there's no real reason to say it.
* It doesn't matter who is/isn't a therian or what we do personally. Arguing about that is stupid and irrelevant.
* Therian Temple is not an insane Cult and is not going to hurt anyone. I think the entire thing is crap if you ask me, but on review, I guess it MAY be about as legitimate as alot of the weird stuff I see on some Otherkin boards (I don't know, I can't know, I don't own a copy of the "Therian Bible") I don't think it is, but if people follow it, [[uncyclopedia:Nobody_cares|who cares]]...
I'm pretty sure we can both agree on that, so we need to stop debating what is blatantly BullShit and think up a compromise.
:Here is what I think is fair and what we should do:
* This article should be deleted from WikiFur. - It has NOTHING to do with Furry and is just causing anti WikiFur drama within the community.
* We will make a new article at Therianthropy.wikia.com - It DOES belong there. I would LOVE to see it there, it has so much relevance.
* The article should be factual. Not full of bias (that goes either way). It shouldn't be the FAQ page for Therian Temple, and it shouldn't be completely Negative.
* The entire debate over whether or not Therian Temple is [insert something extreme here] should end. starting here. It's a stupid debate that can never end. so there. The End.
How is that? I can agree to all of that (don't like some of it, but I'm happy to agree with all of it) Do you like it? any changes? or are we settled?

Ok, as this article is only a source of drama for me to deal with, I'm shortening it. Several members of Therian Temple and other groups have expressed concern over the fact that this article is on a furry fandom site and everyone on both sides dissagrees with it. So I'm shortening it to the bare essentials. Don't like it? then you should either talk here or vandalize [[wikia:c:therian|HERE]]. otherwise, go away and let us deal with it.

Before anyone says anything, I'm doing this after a long set of discussions over IRC and in other places. I said I would do it in #WikiFur at one point, now I am doing it. also, to any therians reading this: I AM NOT A WIKIFUR SYSOP. I do not have "influence" here. I used to, but I left the project. stop holding me accountable.
The term "-fag" isn't neccsarily mean an insult or demeaning term on the /4/chan or annonymous community. Don't get me wrong I am not assosiated with Anonymous or so but I am well familiar by their terms. Understand what some words we may find vulgar to an extend, because Anonymous are... anonymous, they see some words to a level extend that doesn't offend them. After all they have referd even the very few people they respect as fags, not as an insult but as a simple to honoured title. Anonymous, /4/chan and whoever use the term "furfag" may be using it as an offense, but it can simply mean those who are furry. They call [[Wikipedia:Mark Bunker|Mark bunker]], a guy who supports Chanology and only guy who has some command over thearmy of Anonymous and liked by them, a "Beardfag". not as an insult but simply because he has a beard.
Corrected to account for [[Burned Fur]]'s non-status as an "anti-furry" group. They do not in fact meet any of the given criteria by which a group is in fact considered "anti-furry". In point of fact, Burned Furs constantly related serious concerns with the status of Furry Fandom's image, both in their individual correspondence and public statements. There exists no evidence to date to suggest that Burned Fur wanted to ban pornography from the fandom or take any steps to harm the fandom itself.

Burned Furs did not have a problem with the fandom, but instead with the public sexual conduct of a small minority of furry fans who nonetheless managed to obtain the majority of media coverage concerning the fandom as a whole. Many furry fans living alternative lifestyles interpreted the "Burned Fur Manifesto" to be an attack on their sexual preferences, and responded with accusations that the Burned Furs were everything from homophobes to neo-Nazis. The end result amounted to several years of vicious and ultimately pointless flamewars mounted on the newsgroup alt.fan.furry by proponents of both sides. --[[User:Calbeck|Calbeck]], 16 Dec 2005

Also I want to ask on [[Furs Against Furs]] and [[Burned Furs]] one was anti-furry and the other not, I asked and Spirou just labelled the other anti-fur. So I'm confused. Well in anti-furry it's vague on if it's a furry group that doesn't like furries or not. The two groups are there now recently because he added them, but I'm wondering about the term anti-furry. Maybe this, "''furries that practice regularly include the removal of furry media references ([[Sex2K|MTV]], [[CSI]], [[Drew Carey]], [[Vanity Fair]], and [[ER]]), the discrediting of relations of sexuality to the fandom, and/or the practicing the philosophies of [[Burned Furs]] and [[Furs Against Furs]]. Like terms have been used to cite prevalence of these types of furries on places--most commonly wikipedia's furry categories, whereas they are not as common elsewhere. For example, such editors on wikipedia never would allow mention of [[Taurin and the Yiffing Machine]].''" kind of behavior in the quote a type of anti-furry? Maybe not? == Ugh, it's not about not liking furries ==
The reason sites like SA and ED pick on furries is because they make fun of everybody... And there are about as many surface reasons to pick on furries as there are cross dressers. Cross dressers have deep phychological reasons, but holy crap they are an easy target.

==I think this article is rather unfair to non-furries==
I will admit right now that I could be classed as "anti-furry". I find the pursuit somewhat odd, that's all. However your article implies that people who don't like furry automatically hate furries and want to start some sort of vendetta against furries, which isn't true. Can't something be done about this? [[User:80.229.173.125|80.229.173.125]] 17:27, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
:After a rereading of the article I don't really get where it implies that anyone who doesn't like furries is anti-furry. Certainly there are different types and degrees of "anti-furry" attitude and behavior. The term "furry" itself has different meanings to different people, who often have their own ideas about whether they consider themselves or certain other individuals or groups to be furries; no doubt the same is true of anti-furries. The opening sentence states that anti-furries are those who find furry fandom to be repulsive, whereas you yourself only stated that you find it to be somewhat odd. I might not consider that sentence from the article to be all-inclusive of anti-furries (and the rest of the article goes into some of this) but I think it's safe to say that those who find furries to be simply odd, different, or weird are not anti-furries per se. --[[User:Mwalimu|mwalimu]] 23:24, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Like I've said before, people that make fun of other people simply because they choose to do something that is out of the "Norm" are truely sad. It shows that they are insecure of them selves and that they need to take that insecurity out on others, IE Furries, Homosexuals, Blacks. Throughout history its been shown that those people have extream issues with them selves. I'm not tell those to got get help or anything but what I am saying is that harassing or making fun of someone is childish for people who are "Adults" to be doing that shows a huge immature level in todays socicity.
Is there a name for the fear or furries? So far I came up with [[Fursona|Furso]][[wikipedia:Phobia|phobia]] since originally Fursona is portmanteau of the terms furry and persona, Persona being latin for Mask. Another is Zooanthrothropy (Greek zωο, Zōo – "animal", ἄνθρωπος, ánthropos - "man" and φόβος, phóbos - "fear"). these are fictional latin portmanteau's I made up but closest I believe to Anti-furists are [[Wikipedia:Xenophobia|Xenophobics]] however that term can mean racism as well. '''Sarnak''' are an evil race of [[draconid]]s created by [[wikipedia:Sony Online Entertainment|Sony Online Entertainment]] for the massively multiplayer online role-playing games [[EverQuest]] and EverQuest II.

The Sarnak are an [[Iksar]]/[[Dragon]] [[hybrid]] originally created by the Iksar to serve as soldiers in their armies. As the Iksar Empire weakened, the Sarnak revolted, claiming Chardok as their own.

==EverQuest==
The Sarnak appear as hostile mobs introduced in EverQuest's first expansion, [[Wikipedia:EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark|The Ruins of Kunark]]. There are two Sarnak factions, the common ''Sarnak Collective'' and Chardok's ''Brood of Di'Zok''.

==EverQuest II==
In EverQuest II's fourth expansion, [[wikipedia:EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark|Rise of Kunark]], a new breed of Sarnaks from Gorowyn, an island in Timorous Deep, was added as a playable race. The original sarnaks formally becoming the Di'Zok.

===Di'Zok===
With the worldwide disasters affecting Norrath and the rebirth of the Iksar Empire, the Di'Zok have been greatly weakened and forced back to Chardok.

===Sarnak===
The Sarnaks of Gorowyn are the result of the Di'Zok's attempts to create a superior Sarnak warrior. While successful, the super Sarnaks were rebellious and too difficult to control, forcing the Di'Zok to destroy them.

When the [[parrot]]-like Spiroc discovered the Di'Zok's long abandoned laboratory at Gorowyn, they too attempted to create a superior Sarnak to serve them. As with the Di'Zok, they were successful but completely unable to control their creation. The new breed of Sarnaks defeated the Spiroc and claimed Gorowyn as their own.

[[Image:Bear_paws.jpg|right|thumb|Depiction of an Iksar male from EverQuest II]]
'''Iksar''' are a race of [[lizardman]] created by [[Wikipedia:Sony Online Entertainment|Sony Online Entertainment]] for their massively multiplayer online role-playing games [[EverQuest]] and EverQuest II. The Iksar were originally introduced in EverQuest's first expansion, [[Wikipedia:EverQuest: The Ruins of Kunark|The Ruins of Kunark]].

The Iksar are an evil aligned race, but they have a poor opinion of all other races.

==Fictional history==
The Iksar were created by the god Cazic-Thule the Faceless, the ruler of the plane of fear. For most of the early history, they served as a slave race to the Shissar, a race of [[naga]]s. However, the Shissar angered their own gods and were destroyed by the Greenmist, allowing the Iksar to rise in their place.

===Sebilisan Empire===
Originally divided into five major tribes, the Iksar were united by the necromancer Venril Sathir, who ruled from Sebilis. After delving into the secrets of the Shissar and making a pact with Innoruuk, Venril was betrayed by his son, Rile Sathir, who trapped his father's soul in an amulet.

Rile continued his father's legacy and the Iksar conquered all of Kunark except for the land held by the giants and the dragons. The [[dragon]]s of the Ring of Scale knew that the Iksar were a threat but voted against direct action; however, the dragon Trakanon, who had advocated for war, ignored the vote and assassinated Rile Sathir by summoning a great storm that sank Rile and his navy beneath the ocean.

The next Emperor, Atrebe Sathir, delved into the magic of the Shissar to create the [[Sarnak]], a Iksar/Dragon hybrid, to serve as soldiers, and the Sokokar, a Dragon/[[Froglok]] hybrid, to serve as flying mounts. Able to fight the dragons on land and in the sky, the Iksar were nearly undefeatable.

The Iksar's war with the Ring of Scale effectively ended when Ganak Sathir and Jaled-Dar, the leader of the Ring of Scale, slew each other over the Field of Bone. While retreating, the Ring of Scale enacted a final vengeance by destroying the Iksar's Imperial Palace, ending the line of Sathir.

With no heirs, the Iksar created the Emerald Circle comprised of five wise leaders. However, they soon fell to petty squabbling and the empire was divided. Taking advantage of the Iksar's weakened state, the slave races revolted and enemies from abroad invaded. In a final, crushing blow, Trakanon returned and laid waste to all that remained, ending the reign of the Sebilisan Empire over Kunark.

'''Jaffer Roshak''' is a [[furry]] who lives in Canberra, Australia. His [[fursona]] is a white [[avian]].

==History==
Jaffer first found out about furries in 1997 through Magic: The Gathering's [[wikipedia:Tempest (Magic: The Gathering)|Tempest]] deck, where a picture of a [[feline]] anthro called ''Mirri'', drawn by [[Susan Van Camp]], caught his eye.<ref>[http://www.artbysvc.com/mg012.html Natural Spring], Magic the Gathering Game Card, art by Susan Van Camp. Retrieved December 24, 2008.</ref>

It took almost 3 years for Jaffer to realize that the furry fandom was much bigger then himself and he slowly became more involved.

==Characters==
Jaffer’s fursona has changed several times, and he has many [[alt]] characters, usually created to explore and experience as much of the fandom as possible.

*'''Jaffer ‘Cydan’ Roshak''' was originally a generic [[feline]], then moved onto being a [[leopard]]. This stuck until early 2008 when one of his alt characters started become more like a main. Since then, Jaffer has merged with the alt character Cydan and become a white avian.

*'''Cydan''' was originally a white avian created to explore parts of the fandom that Jaffer would not dare tread, but after becoming attached to the character, Jaffer merged it with his main. Several character quirks of Cydan still exist within Jaffer.

*'''Iasia Eesha Thastest''' (pronounced ''i-ee-sa'') is a [[tigress]]. She was the first [[female]] alt of Jaffer’s has probably been one of the largest influences on him. The character has gone through several changes, the largest of which being her killed by another fur, [[Felicia Wolverini]]. It was planned by both parties, and after it happened, Iasia came back as a [[ghost]]. She is still played from time to time.

*'''Valery ‘vixen’ Vaporay''' started as an experiment by Jaffer to see if he could [[role-play]] a female character outside of the furry fandom. She was a [[vixen]] and a gamer. She joined an internet gaming clan where she managed to play for 9 months, with almost daily contact with the members. Jaffer was eventually caught when the clan leader developed a crush on Valery, and tracked her IP to the same one that Jaffer had. After confronting Jaffer/Valery it was agreed that Jaffer should leave the clan. Jaffer had created a very complete background to Valery for use while role-playing her, He is currently writing a [[story]] based on the character. There are two versions of her:
**''Story Valery'' has an eye condition called [[wikipedia:keratoconus|keratoconus]] (which Jaffer has in real life) and has to wear glasses to see clearly.
**''Chat room Valery'' is blind. Jaffer made her like that to improve his [[role-playing]] skills by focusing on more than just how things look.

*'''Katrina ‘kat’ Skelt:''' was the [[mate]]/lover/mistress of Valery. She was originally just a name, but the character has been fleshed out a bit for the story Jaffer is writing.

===Minor characters===
*'''Kiviya:''' Based off Jaffer’s pet in the game [[World of Warcraft]]. Kiviya is a female blue [[wolf]].
*'''Echo:''' Based off Jaffer’s pet in the game World of Warcraft. Echo is a female [[wikia:c:wow:warp stalker|warp stalker]].
*'''Locken:''' Based off a [[Dungeons & Dragons|D&D]] character. Locken is a large (7’ 9” tall) [[alligator]] anthro.
*'''Thirsha:''' Based off a D&D character. Thirsha is Locken’s mate, but she is just a normal [[lizardman|lizard folk]].
*'''Tyer:''' Based off a D&D character. Tyer was made for a story that continues the [[wikipedia:Dragonlance|Dragonlance]] series ''Kang's Regiment''. Jaffer's story was never finished, but the character remains. He is an [[wikipedia:Draconian (Dragonlance)|Aurak Draconian]].
== The Werelist and furry ==

Generally, [[furries]] are well accepted on the site, as well as [[Otherkin]] and other non-therians. As long as people accept the views of others, they are allowed to stay and mingle.

== Resources and rules ==

A contact directory is provided that makes it easier for weres to meet others and participate in the community, as well as a common ground for the therianthrope community to interact, as well as a central clearinghouse for reliable information about therianthropy. Other resources include:

* The Howl Resource, for announcing real-life gatherings and get-togethers for the community
* An informational resource, providing FAQs, essays, news and terminology
* A clearinghouse for news and announcements of interest to the Community
* Links to other resources of interest to the community, which may provide further resources and information.
* A Google maps map, showing the locations of all the members who have given them.

<!-- ==== The "Purple Dinosaur" rule ====

In order to make sure people read the rules, Coyote, the site's founder, created a rule that anyone who did not follow a set of simple instructions hidden in the rules would be labeled as a "Purple Dinosaur" and after 6 weeks, have their accounts suspended. It is not actually possible to become a "Purple Dinosaur" by being banned from the site, and it is extremely difficult to be banned from the site unless you engage in egregious name calling, spamming, hate speech or other behavior that causes problems for the site itself.

Some individuals claim that the process is used to sort out those who do not believe in the ideas and goals of the administrators and of the group, and that the Werelist falsely tries to promote itself as the only "reliable" online source related to [[therianthropy]].

However, the only one possible way to be a banned Purple Dinosaur on Werelist, would be for an individual would have to sign up for an account and never complete the process of registering, triggering automatic suspension after six weeks. If someone is manually removed or suspended from the site because they have behaved egregiously, their status is "[[Troll]]", not "banned Purple Dinosaur". COMMENTED BECAUSE: it is unsure if this rule will still be used in the current werelist, but it is likely. -->

== Controversy ==
<!--
Werelist has been accused of linking to adult content, including an Adult Furry [[BBS]], but the admins do not permit such links on a board that is supposed to be for the serious discussion of therianthropy. There are no links to any adult content allowed in the public areas, and links to explicitly pornographic content are not encouraged even in the "adult" areas.

The "adult discussion" areas, as are noted under their description, are for serious talk about issues that adults face in life, and are specifically not for the posting of gratuitous X-rated material. A typical thread from the "adult discussion" area might involve raising children or changing careers, as well as issues related to gender identity and sexual orientation. -->

Werelist has been accused of being "''imperialistic''", or stepping on the views of therians who the administrators do not agree with. This is a very weak claim, as the only time people are banned from the site, is when they either attack other people, or act in an overly uncivil manner (or "troll"). It is actually very difficult to earn a ban from Werelist, and in all the years the site has been in operation only a few dozen people have managed it. The current holders of a Werelist ban are for the most part trolls from sites like SomethingAwful, with other banned member categories including people who have attempted to conduct illegal activity on the site (soliciting minors for adult activity) and commercial spammers. Very few members have ever been banned for behavioral problems, and no one has ever been banned for disagreeing with the administrators, criticizing the site or holding an unpopular opinion. Constructive criticism or suggestions about the site and the helpstaff is always welcome and listened to respectfully. Diverse viewpoints are also welcome, though users must "agree to disagree" in a courteous adult manner while on the site.

Werelist has further been accused of being overly-critical of less-accepted ideas (such as P-Shifting). This is somewhat true, as the members are generally more moderate in their beliefs, and do not believe things they aren't familiar with. What is not true, is the accusation that people are banned simply because they hold less-accepted opinions.

Werelist's policy is that while all personal, spiritual and religious beliefs must be respected, if you make real physical claims about the real physical world, you must be prepared to present real physical evidence. For instance, it is fine to state that you believe in magically shifting your shape, but not fine to say that you can do it, or that you can teach others to do it for money or other considerations such as cybersex or submitting to the domination of some "authority" figure who makes claims of special, magical powers. This is considered unhealthy (and dangerously illegal if minors are involved) and is not tolerated. Good critical thinking about the real world is encouraged while respecting and appreciating spiritual beliefs.

The line between being respectful of personal and spiritual beliefs, encouraging healthy adult critical thinking, and staying safe from online predators and unhealthy game players is a difficult one to walk. Werelist strives to do its best in service to the community, but may not always do a perfect job at pleasing everyone all of the time.
FurcoNZ was held in November 2006 in [[Wikipedia:Wairakei|Wairakei]], just north of Taupo. This event has been the second largest, with over thirty people attending. Held in a three-bedroom home, this FurcoNZ was the first to include wireless internet, and have a DVD produced from digital video footage as a memoir of what happened. The 2006 event is what led to the type of location for the 2007 event.

The idea for the project was started on July 2, 2005 on the forums for Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures. The project has since grown to include several of the forum members (and some of their family members). The actors have, by now, voiced a sizeable amount of the comic, though by far not all of it. The DMFA Radio Project is put together mainly by [[Tapewolf]]. It should be noted that the project is purely fan-based, and is not an official part of Amber's comic, story, or project.

:''This article is about the character. For the film, see [[Fritz the Cat (film)]].''

'''''Fritz the Cat''''' is a [[comic strip]] created by [[wikipedia:Robert Crumb|Robert Crumb]]. Set in a "supercity" of [[Anthropomorphism|anthropomorphic]] animals, the strip focuses on Fritz. A smooth feline con artist, he frequently finds himself in wild adventures, often involving a variety of sexual experiences. The character originated from home made comic books Crumb drew when he was a child, and became the most famous character created by him. Originally appearing in ''[[wikipedia:Help! (magazine)|Help!]]'' and ''[[wikipedia:Cavalier (magazine)|Cavalier]]'', it subsequently appeared in assorted publications associated with the [[wikipedia:underground comix|underground comix]] scene between 1965 and 1972, where it became one of the most well known features of the scene.

''Fritz the Cat'' was the basis for the [[Fritz the Cat (film)|1972 animated film]] of the same name. A worldwide hit, it served as the directorial debut of animator [[wikipedia:Ralph Bakshi|Ralph Bakshi]], and was the first animated feature film to receive an [[wikipedia:X-rated|X rating]] in the United States. Because of disagreements with the filmmakers during the production of the film, Crumb ended the strip in 1972 by publishing a story in which Fritz was murdered by an ex-girlfriend. A second animated film, ''[[wikipedia:The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat|The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat]]'', was produced in 1974 without the involvement of Bakshi or Crumb.

While it features anthropomorphic characters, it is not a furry comic.

==Overview==
Fritz the Cat originated in a story drawn by Robert Crumb as a child; along with his brother and sisters, he created homemade comic books influenced by the childrens' comics of the era. Fritz made appearances within early 1960s Animal Town strips drawn by Charles and Robert Crumb, sometimes alongside Fuzzy the Bunny, who served as an alter ego of his creator, Charles.<ref name="Pahls">{{cite book |last1=Pahls |first1=Marty |title=The Early Years of Bitter Struggle |edition=third |series=The Complete Crumb Comics |volume=Vol. 1 |year=2003 |month=May |origyear=1996 |publisher=Fantagraphics Books |isbn=0930193423 |pages=vii; x-xi |chapter=Introduction: Right Up To The Edge }}</ref>

Marty Pahls, a childhood friend of Crumb, describes Fritz as "a poseur" whose posturing was taken seriously by everyone around him. Fritz is self-centered and hedonistic, lacking morals and ethics. Thomas Albright describes Fritz as "a kind of updated Felix with overtones of Charlie Chaplin, Candide and Don Quixote." Fritz's personality is "glib, smooth and self-assured," characteristics Crumb himself felt he lacked. According to Pahls:

<blockquote>"I don't think the difference between Robert, back in 1960–1965, and his characterization of Fritz is all that mysterious. To a great extent, Fritz was his wish-fulfillment. Through Fritz, Robert could do great deeds, have wild adventures, and undergo a variety of sex experiences, which he himself felt he couldn't. Fritz was bold, poised, had a way with the ladies—all attributes which Robert coveted, but felt he lacked."</blockquote>

Crumb himself denied any personal relationship with the character, stating "I just got into drawing him. [...] He was fun to draw." As Crumb's personal life changed, so did the character. According to Pahls, "For years, [Crumb] had few friends and no sex life; he was forced to spend many hours at school or on the job, and when he came home he 'escaped' by drawing home-made comics. When he suddenly found a group of friends that would accept him for himself, as he did in Cleveland in 1964, the 'compensation' factor went out of his drawing, and this was pretty much the end of Fritz's impetus." Robert Crumb stated of his anthropomorphic work:

<blockquote>"I can express something [with animals] that is different from what I put into my work about humans...I can put more nonsense, more satire and fantasy into the animals...they're also easier to do than people...With people I try more for realism, which is probably why I'm generally better with animals."<ref name="Pahls"/></blockquote>

Crumb's sense of fantasy led Fritz to play many roles over the years, including a pop music star, a hip poet, a college dropout, a secret agent and a militant revolutionary. The comic takes place in a "modern 'supercity' of millions of animals." Typically, stories begin simply, only to become increasingly chaotic and complex due to uncontrollable forces. The strip "Fritz Bugs Out" uses anthropomorphic characters to comment on race relations, with crows representing African Americans. Fritz is portrayed as a self-conscious hypocrite, obsessed with his racism and guilt over his racism, while crows are portrayed as "hip innocents". In his ''New York'' magazine review of ''R. Crumb's Head Comix'', John Canaday describes the punch line of the Fritz the Cat strip "Fred, the Teen-Age Girl Pigeon" as "outrageous brilliance [that] is rivaled only by Evelyn Waugh's last lines in ''The Loved One''."

==History==
Fritz made his first appearance in the 1959 story "Cat Life", as a house cat named Fred. The strip was based upon the Crumb family cat, and was drawn to amuse Crumb's sister and younger brother. With the character's next appearance in the 1960 story "Robin Hood", it had become anthropomorphic and obtained the name Fritz, which had been the name of a minor unrelated character that had appeared briefly within "Cat Life".

In 1964, Crumb drew many Fritz the Cat strips for his own amusement when not working at the American Greetings Corporation. In January 1965, Help! published the first public appearance of the character, "Fritz Comes on Strong". In it, Fritz brings a young cat girl home, and strips all of her clothes off before getting on top of her to pick fleas off of her body. Preceding the publication of the story, the magazine sent Crumb a letter which read "Dear R. Crumb, we think the little pussycat drawings you sent us were just great. Question is, how do we print them without going to jail?" In May 1965, Help! published a second Fritz story, "Fred, the Teen-Age Girl Pigeon".

Following experiences with LSD in 1967, Crumb began to create other characters, and focused his attention on humans rather than anthropomorphic characters. "Fritz Bugs Out" was serialized in Cavalier from February to October 1968. In the summer of 1968, Viking Press printed Head Comix, a compilation of comics by Crumb, including stories featuring Fritz. In 1969, Ballantine Books published R. Crumb's Fritz the Cat, paying Crumb a $5,000 advance for the publication rights, which he used to purchase three acres of land. These publications brought Crumb and his character larger attention, leading to an interest in the production of a film. Crumb abandoned the character that year.

[[File:B00003CWQI.01. SCLZZZZZZZ .jpg|thumb|''Fritz the Cat'' (1972)]]
In 1969, New York animator Ralph Bakshi wanted to begin producing films that would deviate from the conventional storytelling of the Walt Disney Company in order to comment on political and social issues.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> Bakshi pitched the concept for ''Heavy Traffic'' to producer Steve Krantz, who felt that it would be difficult to finance because of its content and Bakshi's lack of directorial experience.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> While browsing the East Side Book Store on St. Mark's Place, Bakshi came across a copy of ''R. As Krantz began to prepare the paperwork, preparation began on a pitch presentation for potential studios, including a poster-sized painted cel setup featuring the strip's cast against a traced photo background, as Bakshi intended the film to appear.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> However, in spite of Crumb's enthusiasm, he was unsure about the film's production, and refused to sign the contract.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> Artist [[wikipedia:Vaughn Bodé|Vaughn Bodé]] warned Bakshi against working with Crumb, describing him as "slick".<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> Bakshi later agreed with Bodé's assessment, calling Crumb "one of the slickest hustlers you'll ever see in your life".<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> Krantz sent Bakshi to San Fransisco, where Bakshi stayed with Crumb and his wife, Dana, in an attempt to persuade Crumb to sign the contract.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> After a week, Crumb left, leaving the film's production status uncertain.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> Two weeks after Bakshi returned to New York, Krantz entered his office and told Bakshi that he had acquired the film rights because Dana had power of attorney and signed the contract.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/> Crumb received US$50,000, which was delivered throughout different phases of the production, in addition to ten percent of Krantz's take.<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/>

Robert Crumb first saw the film in February 1972, during a visit to Los Angeles in the company of fellow underground cartoonists Spain Rodriguez, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams, and Rick Griffin. Crumb disliked the film, saying that he felt that the film was "really a reflection of Ralph Bakshi's confusion, you know. There's something real repressed about it. In a way, it's more twisted than my stuff. It's really twisted in some kind of weird, unfunny way. [...] I didn't like that sex attitude in it very much. It's like real repressed horniness; he's kind of letting it out compulsively." Crumb also took issue with the film's condemnation of the radical left, denouncing Fritz's dialogue in the final sequences of the film as "red-neck and fascistic" and stating that "They put words into his mouth that I never would have had him say."

According to Bakshi, Crumb's issues with the film largely stemmed from Bakshi's incorporation of commentary that was not present in the comics, stating the strip "was cute and well-done, but there was nothing that had that much depth." Bakshi also stated that Crumb "thought I was going to spend a year of work on Fritz the Cat and make him the greatest cartoonist in the world", but "when he realized that I was going to become as famous as him, he got mad at me." Bakshi also stated that Crumb threatened to disassociate himself from any cartoonist that worked with Bakshi, which would have hurt their chances at getting work published. Fritz the Cat was the first animated feature to receive an X rating from the MPAA. The film's distributor capitalized on the rating in the film's advertising material, which touted the film as being "X rated and animated!" According to Ralph Bakshi, "We almost didn't deliver the picture, because of the exploitation of it." Steve Krantz stated that the film lost play dates due to the rating, and 30 American newspapers rejected display ads for the film or refused to give it editorial publicity.

The film was released on April 12, 1972, opening in Hollywood and Washington, D.C.. It went on to become a worldwide hit, credited for expanding Crumb's fame outside of the underground comix scene. Following the film's release, Crumb published ''The People's Comics'', featuring the story "Fritz the Cat 'Superstar'", in which Crumb satirized Bakshi and Krantz, drawing Fritz in a script conference for the fictional sequel ''Fritz Goes to India''. The strip ended with Fritz being killed by a neurotic ex-girlfriend, who stabbed him in the back of the head with an ice pick, an occurrence brought on by Fritz's overt sexism. In 1974, Krantz produced a sequel, ''The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat'', without the participation of Bakshi or Crumb.

Crumb stated that the making of the 1972 film adaptation is "one of those experiences I sort of block out. The last time I saw it was when I was making an appearance at a German art school in the mid-1980s, and I was forced to watch it with the students. It was an excruciating ordeal, a humiliating embarrassment. I recall Victor Moscoso was the only one who warned me, 'if you don't stop this film from being made, you are going to regret it for the rest of your life'—and he was right." According to Bakshi, Crumb does not acknowledge ''The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat''. "He would have to say, 'well, Ralph did do a better picture than ''Nine Lives''.' So to Robert Crumb, there is no ''Nine Lives''. It doesn’t exist." Bakshi states that "Crumb is a great artist — a great cartoonist. But I don't like him as a person."<ref name="Gibson-McDonnell-62"/>

==Legacy==
Fritz the Cat is one of the most well-known features of the underground comix scene, and Crumb's most famous creation. According to Dez Skinn, the strip served as one of the inspirations for ''[[Omaha The Cat Dancer]]''.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Skinn |first1=Dez |title=Comix: The Underground Revolution |year=2004 |publisher=Thunder's Mouth Press |page=71 |chapter=Can't Get Enuff }}</ref> In April 1993, Fantagraphics Books published ''The Life & Death of Fritz the Cat'', compiling nine major strips featuring the character. ''Fritz the Cat'' strips also appear within ''The Complete Crumb Comics'' series. To date, Fritz the Cat remains considerably popular, and a number of artists in various fields have paid tribute to the character. For example, underground hip hop producer [[wikia:c:juggalos:Fritz the Cat|Fritz Van Kosky]] produces under the name ''Fritz the Cat''.

In ''Graphic Novels: A Bibliographic Guide to Book-Length Comics'', D. Aviva Rothschild described the stories printed in The Life & Death of Fritz the Cat as being misogynist, racist and violent, and that "They also tend to ramble, as if Crumb were making them up as he went along". Rothschild concluded that "Even though ''Fritz the Cat'' is a classic, there are better, more coherent Crumb books around". The 1972 film adaptation of ''Fritz the Cat'' was ranked at number 51 on the Online Film Critics Society's list of the top 100 greatest animated films of all time, and was placed at number 56 on Channel 4's list of the ''100 Greatest Cartoons''.

'''Jyrras Gianna''' is an [[anthropomorphic]] [[kangaroo]]/kangaroo-[[Rat (species)|rat]] mix in [[Amber Williams]]' comic, ''[[Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures]]''. Jyrras has been labeled "incredibly cute" by his six older sisters that appear more like a kangaroo than a rat, like himself. This is something that he greatly dislikes.

Jyrras is a genius inventor of many technical gizmos. He owns his own company, Jycorp, and has made millions. He has created many dangerous weapons (that he claims to be "farming" or "mining" tools) in his underground lab. Breaking [[Furrae]] laws, Jy has even created life in the form of a bubble-gum bunny named "DEATH-BRINGER" (she chose her own name), or Deebs.

An anthropomorphic [[cow]]/demon-[[horse|mare]] named [[Lorenda Soulstealer]] lives at Jyrras' mansion. Jyrras is confused about whether he likes her more than just a friend. Unfortunately, this is not the only person the kangaroo/kangaroo-rat might have feelings for. Others include his best friend since childhood, retired adventurer [[Daniel Ti'Fiona]] who has recently discovered he is an [[Wikipedia:incubus|incubus]]; and a tough-guy and brutally honest incubus that might be softer than he seems, [[Abel Rewanz|Abel]].

Jyrras' feisty ferret friend, [[Wildy-san]], wrote an entire novel where Jyrras becomes a super-villain against pink-suited secret agent Janus Bond (a spoof on DMFA fan, [[Janus Whitefurr]]). When Janus is captured, a wheel-of-death dictates he is to be put to death by [[Wikipedia:Shōnen-ai|shōnen-ai]].

Jyrras Gianna has become one of the favorite characters of DMFA. In the latest comics, the [[stereotype|stereotypically]] cute Jyrras has gained a new outfit and is developing a deeper character.

A [[comic book]] is a kind of [[cartoon]] in the form of a small magazine that contains an extended series of sequential images that tell a story or part of a story. Some comic books even contain two or more full stories, or one complete story and one part of another unrelated one. The story content of comic books, in defiance of the term ''comic'', is not invariably humorous.

== A Brief History ==
The earliest comic books were published in the 1930's and included such titles as ''[[wikia:c:flashgordon|Flash Gordon]]'', ''[[Wikipedia:Superman|Superman]]'', and ''[[Wikipedia:Captain Marvel|Captain Marvel]]'' (''Shazam''). These early titles combined aspects of both comic strips and dime novels and dealt primarily with science fiction and fantasy. Alongside these appeared other more lighthearted titles featuring highly exaggerated human and [[funny animal]] characters. As the United States entered World War II, many comic books pitted superheroes against supervillains symbolizing the very real threat of the Axis powers. After the war, many titles were discontinued because they lost their sense of purpose. From the 1950's on, titles intended for younger readers or older readers seemed to become more polarized, often making one category almost completely unsuitable for the intended audience of the other. Titles such as ''[[Wikipedia:Archie|Archie]]'' and its spin-offs, however, managed to buck that trend.

== Comic Books and Furry Fandom ==
Large publishers, with their vested interest in existing titles, have historically been reluctant to publish new titles involving [[furries]] and funny animals, but there have been two major exceptions. One was DC Comics' ''[[Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew]]'', and the other was ''[[Spider-Ham|Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham]]'', published by Star Comics, subsidiary of Marvel. Both of these were parodies of existing genres and titles. Archie Comics' ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' and [[Antarctic Press]]'s ''[[Gold Digger]]'' perhaps come closest to being mainstream furry titles, though classifying them as 'furry' is debatable. Most other furry-friendly titles have been published independently with relatively small print runs. The [[furry fandom]] itself was established partly around the publication of titles such as ''[[Omaha the Cat Dancer]]'', ''[[Albedo Anthropomorphics]]'', and ''[[Equine the Uncivilized]]''.
