A black cat with white hair, '''Lucy Koneko''' is the main character of the strip, with many of the stories dealing with her sexual romps and relationships. She is [[bisexual]], but is mostly [[lesbian]]. So far she has been in relationships with her one-time boss [[Zig Zag]]; an incestuous relationship with her brother Fisk; and is currently dating a co-worker, Jezzebel. She has routinely tried to get her roommate Lydia to have sex with her, but she refuses; Lucy has since stopped trying due to Lydia's relationship with Dirk, and her own with Jezzebel.

She has lived in New Talia for the last few years after moving from Atlanta, Georgia; and currently works as an editor for Sonica, a music magazine. She originally worked there as their harshest, most vicious music critic; Lucy also composed music for some of Zig Zag's movies, wrote songs and produced an album for a band, and even appeared as a professional wrestler's on-air girlfriend.

A white cat with black hair, and Lucy's childhood friend, she works at the ''White Cat'' tattoo, fur dying and body piercing parlor. Lydia is originally from Atlanta, and followed Lucy to New Talia where they share an apartment. Lydia is totally straight—although she once thought she might have been bisexual—and resists Lucy's come-ons. It's at work that she met her boyfriend, Dirk who was in getting a body piercing. On October 18, 2004, Dirk asked her to marry him, and on August 31, 2005, they were married.

===Dirk===

Dirk is a [[male]] cat who came into Lydia's parlor for some body piercing, specifically his scrotum; when Lydia saw his "equipment", she was immediately enamored by him. He currently runs his own music store. During the ''New Talian Idol'' incident, Lydia and Dirk got in a fight when Lucy tried to use him to get some of her co-workers off her back, but things got a little too comfy, and Lydia got a little too jealous. After a while, they got back together. They married on August 31, 2005. Jay Naylor came up with the name ''Dirk Savagewood'', because it sounded like a good name for a porn actor.

===Fisk===

Fisk is Lucy's twin brother, and they have been in an incestuous relationship since before they came to New Talia. At first Fisk worked as a security guard for Zig Zag, but after a while, moved back to the U.S. and joined the army, following in his father's footsteps. Sadly, Fisk also followed his father's footsteps right into his grave; his father died in the Vietnam War, and Fisk was killed in Iraq.

Fisk was created by Jay Naylor, and was friends with Mat for a time; so Fisk was included in BDK, while Lucy appears in Jay's comic, ''[[Better Days]]''. The two had a falling out, which would explain Fisk's lack of presence in the comic, and his death. Lucy still appears in ''Better Days''.

===Jezzebel===

A [[bat]] with one eye; she is Fisk's former girlfriend, and now Lucy's girlfriend. Lucy first meets Jezzebel when they are buying birthday presents for Fisk; at said party, they are formally introduced. When Fisk gets drunk, Lucy offers Jezzebel a ride home, one thing led to another, and Lucy woke up in Jezzebel's bed. Shortly after Lucy returned to Sonica, Jezzebel and Lucy started dating. She works in Sonica's mail room.

===Zig Zag===

A skunk with a distinctive tiger-stripe pattern, [[Zig Zag]] is the owner and star of [[Double Z Studios]], an adult film studio, and is the creation of [[Max Black Rabbit]]. For a while she and Lucy dated. With both of them being almost totally promiscuous, it seemed like a perfect match; even though Lucy still made out with Fisk, and Zig Zag still made out with almost anybody with a pulse. When Lucy lost her job at Sonica over the ''New Talian Idol'' incident, Zig Zag offered her a job composing music for her movies. After Lucy was rehired at Sonica, the two have drifted apart. They are still friends but are no longer dating; Lucy says it's because of Zig Zag's eye for Double Z's [[Sabrina|web mistress]].

A black cat who was once Lucy's boss at Sonica. She was the one who pegged Lucy for the host position on ''New Talian Idol'', and she received a hairspray enema for her trouble. When Lucy was rehired at Sonica, Desi was demoted for causing the whole mess, and Lucy was now her boss. It was too much for Desi, and later on she quit. Desi now hosts ''New Talian Idol''.

===Dirk's Parents===

Dirk's parents show up just in time for his and Lydia's wedding. They are divorced, and it seems they are not from North America—or at least his father isn't—as there is a reference to "football" being the same as "soccer". Dirk's father's name is Kirk, and his mother's name is Carol.

===Linda===

Dirk's sister, who has been in England for the last five years. When Lucy tried to get Dirk and Lydia back together, she found him with another woman, not knowing that it was his sister. Unlike Lucy and Fisk, there is nothing more to their relationship.

===Lola the Comedy Kitten===

A cat who appears every now and then when Mat can't come up with a good way to end a comic, usually by making some random comment on the current goings on, or doing something completely irrelevant; as such, she often talks to the audience directly, breaking the [[Wikipedia:fourth wall|fourth wall]]. Unlike the other characters, Lola takes the shape of a normal cat.

One time when Mat was feeling down, Amber, creator of [[Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures]] kidnapped Lola and threatened to change her into a succubus if Mat didn't pay her a ransom of jellybeans, but no licorice ones. Lucy's answer was to kidnap all of DMFA's mows, which proved disastrous, and Amber turned Lola into a succubus. She is now promising much revenge on Mat.

Lydia takes very much after her mother, right down to their inability to drink alcohol—both get drunk whenever the slightest bit touches their lips. Ironically, Lydia's father looks like an older version of Dirk, although this could be the result of Mat's simplistic art style leaving little room for character variation. Lydia's mother's name is Delia, while her father's name was recently retconned to "Charles"; it was originally given as "Albert".

===Mat===

The author of the comic. Mat inserts himself occasionally when there is need to talk about the direction the comic is going. In real life, Mat works at a Pizza Hut, loves music, and was a professional wrestling fan, though horribly disappointed by it now. Mat isn't really a part of the comic continuity, and like Lola, often breaks the fourth wall, speaking to the audience directly.

===Nikashi===

A friend of Dirk's who works at his record store. He's also Sally's boyfriend.

===Sally===

A heavily tattooed woman who works with Lydia. In a Halloween strip, it is revealed she is actually a carnivorous [[demon]] from the depths of Hell. It's unknown if her boyfriend Nikashi knows.

===Sheila===

Lucy and Fisk's mother, she has appeared frequently through the comic. Even though she often asks Lucy if she's got a boyfriend, she suspects that her daughter is gay; she accepts her daughter is bisexual, but Sheila hopes that Lucy will at least get a boyfriend and mother a child at some point.

===Snow===

A pet [[ferret]] that Lucy bought Lydia during her break-up with Dirk. Lydia named her ''Snow'' (short for ''Snowball'') because her fur is completely white, a la Snow White.

===Vincent Rann===

The president of Ranntech, he is a billionaire who bought Sonica magazine. Shortly after, he tried to sue Lucy for $1.5 million for damages related to the ''New Talian Idol'' incident. Lucy counter sued, forcing an out of court settlement. Rann didn't like that he had to bow down at all and has tried various schemes to make her life a living hell.

The Funday Pawpet Show originated in November of 1999; Yappy and friends were working on their puppetry at his home when they came up with the idea of streaming a puppet show on the Internet. Various changes have come and gone — in equipment, location, and performers alike — but the show continues to this day, with some gaps and re-runs. The show's 400th episode aired Dec 21, 2008 and it held its 10-year anniversary in November, 2009. The FPS crew also perform live shows at various [[conventions]] around the country, most notably at [[Megaplex]].

The show is hosted by a cast of animal puppets, all mostly made by [[Folkmanis]]. The primary roles are played by the main [[Wikipedia:Master of Ceremonies |Master of Ceremonies]] sheepdog, [[Mutt (PawPet)|Mutt]], along with his sheepdog stand-in, [[Ezra]]. All the while, everyone's favorite [[Poink T. Ferret]] acts as the show's free-willed comic, often with the beloved [[Lili (PawPet)|Lili]] playing along with his lines.

== Format ==
As the show is four hours long, its content is open-ended and nearly all of it is completely improvised. Aside from the opening and closing sequences, other fixed content includes:

* '''Roll Call''', in which a guest or cast member, usually flummoxed by constant /nick changes, attempts to read the screennames of everyone in the IRC channel.
* '''Photo Captions''', in which viewers are encouraged to send in a caption for a humorous photograph.
* '''Shout Outs''', in which viewers and Channel chatters post personal and general interest messages, which are read aloud.
* '''ArtJam''', in which viewers are encouraged to send in original artwork. Current practice is to begin showing these at 9:30, so as to allow for completion of themed pieces, yet leave time for the show to wind down.

Any themes or topics for the evening are either brought up during conversation or are planned out in advance, as in the case of a cast member leaving or a statutory holiday, for example.

'''Spits or Swallows''' is an event held infrequently, in which the cast (and sometimes, guests) give their honest opinions about food items that they taste on camera. The food is usually sent in by viewers, and can range anywhere from obscure Asian beverages to new fast food items; in some extreme cases, the cast has "enjoyed" [[Wikipedia:MRE|MRE]]s, [[Wikipedia:Durian|durian]] fruit and Cheeseburger-in-a-Can.

Guests who visit the show often participate by being interviewed by the PawPets and the IRC audience, and are usually given the '''Pink Flamingos Challenge''', in which they are asked to eat a (preferably chocolate) confection while watching the finale to the film ''[[Wikipedia:Pink Flamingos|Pink Flamingos]]'', in which [[Wikipedia:Drag_queen|drag queen]] [[Wikipedia:Divine (Glen Milstead)|Divine]] eats actual dog feces (during which, "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" plays.) Because of the graphic nature of this scene, the film itself is forbidden from being seen on screen and only the guests' reactions are taped.

Recently, a segment entitled '''Subservient Fursuit''' has been broadcast on an infrequent basis. It is based on the [[Wikipedia:The_Subservient_Chicken|Subservient Chicken]] viral marketing campaign by [[Wikipedia:Burger_King|Burger King]] and features a [[fursuiter]] having their actions directed by the IRC audience. The word "Fursuit" in the title is replaced by the fursuit's name at the time of the broadcast. While the show is not intended to be rebroadcast or redistributed at any point, many of the Subservient Fursuit segments have wound up on [[Wikipedia:Youtube|Youtube]].

[[WikiFur]] is moving hosts in the near future. This page explains why, and explores the various options available to us.

== Summary ==

Since its creation in July 2005, WikiFur has been hosted on [[Wikipedia:Wikia|Wikia]], a full-service wiki hosting provider, or [[Wikipedia:Wiki farm|wiki farm]].

Wikia is not a charity. It is a for-profit company funded by [[Wikipedia:venture capital|venture capital]]. This has many positive aspects - not least the high performance and availability of WikiFur to date. However, over time, the negative effects have become more evident.

On Friday 6 June 2008, Wikia announced that it would be [[Wikia:Wikia's New Style|enforcing a new default skin]] (Monaco) with significantly increased advertising, some of which would [http://communitytest.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page intrude into the content area] (in the top-right position normally occupied by a picture or infobox). Users would still be able use other skins by logging in and selecting them in their preferences, but administrators could not select a non-Monaco default for users. <s>They have also [http://www.wikia.com/index.php?title=Forum:Wikia%27s_New_Style&diff=next&oldid=154688 discarded] a promise made before WikiFur's arrival to [http://www.wikia.com/index.php?title=Terms_of_use&curid=968&diff=154683&oldid=147678 never host popup ads]</s> (this change was reverted after [[Wikia:Talk:Terms of use#Wikia Farm|further discussion]]).

We believe that this new style and level of advertising negatively impacts our readers to an unacceptable level. We also feel that Wikia is asserting an inappropriate level of ownership over the wikis for which it provides services. They have indicated that they want a more cohesive community of wiki sites than we do. These differences of opinion and needs are not likely to be resolved.

WikiFur is not the only site to have problems with this - it has been the [[Wikia:Forum:Wikia's New Style/Archive 1|subject]] [[Wikia:Forum:Wikia's New Style/Archive 2|of]] [[Wikia:Forum:Wikia's New Style/Archive 3|much]] [[Wikia:Forum:Wikia's New Style|discussion]]. * Wikia may still maintain a site at furry.wikia.com. This is up to them - the [[Wikipedia:GNU Free Documentation License|GFDL]] permits it, although certain images uploaded under different licenses (or none) might not be available for their use.
** For this reason, please immediately change links to use '''en.wikifur.com''' rather than '''furry.wikia.com'''. The new domain will work both before and after the move.
* GreenReaper has control over the [[WikiFur:Trade and service marks|WikiFur service mark]], therefore our site will be using it and Wikia will not.
* A full database backup (not just the XML) and image backup should be available to us. User login details may be available.

== Current status ==

Our images currently occupy 1.4GiB of space. The database page table can be compressed if necessary and in that case should take up less than 100MB. Allowing for reasonable expansion over the next year, we will be at 2GiB.

Our total bandwidth use is hard to calculate, but we use about 50GiB a month in CSS and HTML transfer alone. It is not unrealistic to suggest that our total usage might be three times this after images.

== Comparison of options ==

During the administrative discussion, several options were proposed.

Some options that were quickly dismissed:
* Wikia has indicated that while they might consider an offer of money for hosting, it does not really fit into their business model. WikiFur's administrators felt it would not work on a long-term basis.
* Other wiki farms were ignored, as we do not believe they will offer a sufficient level of service to justify the additional cost.

| I believe that Timduru's solution is the most effective in our case. Linode - as documented - will likely have problems running the MediaWiki software and would require an administrator to be available in the area in case something does go awry. NFS is not only expensive, but limited in it's application and control we have over the operating environment. Meanwhile, Timduru's option has the least severe "cons", while we can be assured that the interests of Timduru and WikiFur are aligned and understandable. | [[User:Timduru|Timduru]]: NFSN infrastructure sounds interesting, and based on other sites hosted there it sounds like a good option, it is quite costly though. The main points that worries me about them is that as written in their FAQ, they don't allow processes to run for more than 2 to 5 minutes for shell and 3 minutes for php. Mediawiki maintenance scripts and import / export processes will take more time than that to complete, and we will need to run them on a regular basis. The initial xml import took more than 2.5 hours to complete on my server. Even if we get a DB export, that'll take more than 2 minutes to complete I think. The other aspect written in their FAQ is that it seems they don't expect you to use a lot of ressource as you would do on a dedicated server, otherwise they might cancel your hosting. If these 2 points could be cleared with them so that we are sure we can run a heavy mediawiki there, I think their redundant servers would be better than mine. About Linode it's difficult to know what power we would get, but based on the server specs it might be enough. The first option isn't bad either, but discouraging the growth of the site is probably a bad idea. And, with all due respect to Timduru, hosting something like Wikifur on someone's personal server, with a single admin, is a very bad idea. |Well, I would essentially rule out NFSN due to the nature of their hosting platform. Reasons for this include: Very limited server access, no possibility to host other services in the future, no persistent processes (which means we'd have to run mediawiki as a pure CGI program, which is very very very slow), and no memcached or squid (which is absolutely needed for WikiFur with it's level of activity). This leaves Timduru's offer and Linode.
:Now to address my perceived advantages of each: Timduru: cost and setup; Linode: control, scalability, and independence. Timdurus offer, while generous, could be subject to withdrawal for any number of reasons (personal, business, other projects, etc). Dependence on another party would also lessen WikiFur's independence in hosting new and interesting services, and in making configuration changes, or reacting quickly to attacks, and potentially in meeting community demand. However, given all of these limitations you can't beat the cost and currently available capacity, and the real world experience of the administrator.
:Now for the Linode solution: Linode sells what are essentially computer slices (pieces of bandwidth, storage, memory, and compute time) in variable chunks. The downside to this is that we're limited potentially by the other users of that particular machine. The good news is that we're always guaranteed a certain proportion of time there, so we can't be crowded out and we can run whatever software we need. The bad news is that we also have to provide our own server administrator, setup, and maintenance. However, I don't think this is something we should worry about -- it just means we get to appoint and agree on who should help to run the server. I have previously volunteered to help engineer the move and server administration regardless of the final decision of where we move. Regardless of where we choose to move to, I will always be happy to donate my time and experience to making sure WikiFur always remains online. I believe that the best advantage this arrangement provides is total independence and no conflict of interest with regard to any content we might eventually host. The reason I think Linodes second advantage is scalability is that we can bring additional servers online to meet unexpected demand as we grow and turn them off as needed to save money on costs. I have been a Linode customer (for my personal server) for almost a year and a half now and have absolutely no complaints about their level of service (I stand to gain nothing from recommending them here). In fact, the owner hangs out in their IRC channel and helps out (they've helped me out with some exceedingly tricky setups before). :Turns out it's a bug in the skin selector in preferences. The MediaWiki:AdminSkin message was set to monobook which isn't in the listing so it gets confused. This convention allows for a more consistent structure between articles which allows the reader to find what they're looking for more easily. The reason I made this edit to improve consistency with the other articles, not because you're original correction was in any way wrong it's just that it, in my opinion, more closely follows the de facto article format.

The community around Serenity Woods has gone through much in just a few short years. Known initially as [[The Forest]] - the second oldest furry area in SL after [[Luskwood]] - it was sold to Second Life land baron [[Wikipedia:Anshe Chung|Anshe Chung]] and run by furry management (the Forest Guides) for a year.

The Guides abandoned The Forest after Anshe demanded 1/4 of the sim's area be repurposed to increase revenue, uprooting the trees and transferring them to a new sim owned by [[Foxkin Impfondo]]. Woodland Guide [[Ron Overdrive]] purchased Serenity Woods this February, but found himself unable to keep it, selling it to Kerwin and Mako.</div>

Residents of long-time [[Second Life]] furry haunt [[Serenity Woods]] celebrated tonight after raising US$1925 during a ten-day drive to save the [[island (Second Life)|sim]] from auction.

Forest furs were first notified of problems on the 19th, when community leader [[Curt Pascal]] revealed that current land manager, [[Mako Minogue]], had decided to move on due to "[[RL]] commitments." This change led to a decision by financier [[Kerwin Newall]] to sell the sim.

Staff decided a transfer should take place by the end of this month, in time with monthly tier (sim rental payments) due at the start of November.

Kerwin appeared to prefer a community purchase, offering the sim to its staff at no profit, and turning down at least one offer by a third party to purchase the sim outright. His initial offer, to finance the sim's purchase over six months, was refused as community leaders had no guarantee of getting their money back if they defaulted.

Not having the funds on hand, the staff appealed to the community as a whole for money. Many members donated significant amounts - some in the native Linden Dollar (L$), others in real-world currency.

Donations over US$50 earned an entry on a special dedication plaque. The largest donor, [[Harold Starbrook]], gave L$65,000 (~US$235), while Curt himself put in US$200.

As new owner of the sim, Curt's stated goal is "to preserve the community" with "an almost identical staff."

The standard fursuit is a full body costume that consists of a head, forepaws (hands), hindpaws (feet) and a body with an attached tail; in some cases, the tail is connected via a belt to the wearer and hangs out through a hole in the back of the body. Many suits include special padding or undersuits to give the character its desired shape (this is especially present in larger characters or those of a particular gender.)

A ''partial suit'' or ''half-suit'' contains the above, only without the body. This allows the wearer to don ordinary clothing (or a different costume) overtop of the paws, head and tail. Fursuits can be made out of many different materials, though most incorporate fake fur, foam, felt and varying types of plastic. Several factors can be customized during the construction process, including:

* what types and colours of fur will be used
* the space that the wearer is able to see from (mouth, eyes, neck, etc.)
* whether or not the suit contains padding
* whether or not there will be animated features (wagging tails, "follow me" eyes, etc.)
* any designs, patterns or shading (airbrushing) in the fur itself, and
* whether or not any makeup will be used.

The head is the most detailed feature of a fursuit, and is usually the most complicated because it must easily display what type of animal or creature it is; it also has the task of setting an expressional context for the character, whether it is predominately happy, angry, etc. Several methods exist for creating a fursuit head. The most prominent methods use include:

* strips of plastic canvas are sewn together, and fur and foam is attached to the outside
* a block of foam is carved into the desired shape, and fur is glued to the outside of the foam, and
* fiberglass is molded into the desired shape, and fur is attached to the outside.

Heads can range anywhere from being extremely simplistic (one colour, a sewn-in smile) to elaborate (a moving jaw, "follow-me eyes" that appear to move, hair, facial markings, etc.) Some characters have closed mouths while others are open. The facial expression of the character can range anywhere from toony to realistic, and from inviting to frightening. Some fursuiters, notably [[Timduru]], own two or more heads to sport a different expression in varying locations and circumstances.

Many heads include discrete openings in the mouth or nose to allow the flow of fresh air. Some suits contain battery-powered cooling fans alongside the openings, either to draw air in or pull hot air out. Sometimes a [[Wikipedia:Balaclava|balaclava]] or headband is used inside to separate the wearer from the head, to hide the wearer's face and to absorb sweat.

Some fursuiters opt to wear a mask and/or makeup instead of a full head.

The head is usually removed when in the [[headless lounge]], so that the wearer can interact with other fursuiters and consume refreshments (typically large amounts of water). It is not usually removed in public, and it is considered [[Wikipedia:taboo|taboo]] to take a photograph of a fursuiter with their face visible.

Some furries prefer to use their own eyes as the character's eyes, as it allows for added expression and makes the character seem more realistic.

The bodysuit is the full body of the character and includes the arms, legs, neck and tail. Bodysuits range from loose jumpsuits to form-fitting and/or padded costumes. A standard bodysuit pattern from a catalog can be used, and this basic pattern is usually altered to meet any required modifications, including all size and shape concerns. Many fursuit builders use dressmaker forms or [[Wikipedia:DIY|DIY]] [[duct tape dummy|duct tape dummies]] to build their costumes to ensure a snug fit.

Bodysuits also carry a great amount of detail. Most include a simple light patch down the middle of the torso to represent a cartoon-like stomach area. Various suits have detailed patterns added, either by sewing in different coloured/textured fur or by the use of [[Wikipedia:Airbrushing|airbrushing]] (for example, the stripes of a [[tiger]].) Varying lengths of fur can be used, including shorter fur for the stomach.

A character's shape can be reinforced through the use of padding. Simple padding, such as foam inserts, can lightly define or highlight certain areas. [[Canine|Canid]] suits often employ padding in the legs to create the natural [[digitigrade]] shape of the animal. For large or muscled characters, large inserts or a special undersuit known as a '''muscle suit''' or '''bodypod''' are worn underneath to give the character the needed girth. Some fursuiters portray characters opposite of their natural gender and incorporate the necessary padding into their design.

Most bodysuits include a zipper closure in the back, which is camouflaged by either snaps or velcro concealed under a section of overlapping fur. Several suits have a front closure instead of one in the back.

The issue of what to wear under a bodysuit varies from person to person. Some wear a lycra dive skin or unitard. Some wear their street clothes, and some wear nothing at all.

Simple tails can be thought of as a fabric tube, with the ends sewn up. Sometimes, lengths of delrin rod, foam, wire, or plastic pipe are used to give a tail its desired shape. The tail is usually attached to the bodysuit, though in some cases, the tail is attached to a loop of fabric that runs through a belt and the tail protrudes through a hole in the back of the bodysuit.

In the case of larger tails, such as [[skunk]] or [[squirrel]] tails, fur is usually secured to a large plastic or aluminum support structure, which is in turn attached via a hole in the back of the suit to a harness worn by the performer to take the weight of the tail off of the performer's back; this harness is also worn under the clothing or costume of a partial suit.

Forepaws (or hands) are usually created from two pieces of fabric, traced from the wearer's hand, and sewn together. More complex patterns can also be used, including varying colours and fabrics (fur, felt, etc.) Some fursuit makers add small pawpads to each digit and to the palm to add more realism to the paws; some lightly stuff the pawpads for extra realism. Claws can be made from plastic, leather, resin (most for replica claws such as for [[bear]]s or [[bird]]s) and clay.

Hindpaws (or feet) are the most durable part of the fursuit, as they constantly come in contact with abrasive and dirty surfaces such as concrete and tile flooring and they must put up with a lot of wear and tear and the weight of the performer. Some fursuiters build hindpaws specific to their character, while some wear regular shoes, oversized cartoon shoes or spats (fabric slips that cover regular shoes.)

Most hindpaws are made by attaching foam to store-bought shoes or slippers and furring them. Some fursuit makers build the hindpaws from scratch. The solepads, in this case, can be made of leather or rubber. A variant popular among members of the [[Free paws]] community — who prefer going barefoot — are hindpaws that only cover the top of the feet, leaving the wearer's soles bare.

Even more difficult are [[digitigrade]] hindpaws; either simulated, with fake ankle joints made of foam on the back of the legs, or with a structure supporting a digitigrade position (then however, it becomes difficult to put on the fursuit or to wear it for an extended time). Some constructions for [[Hoof|hooves]] use this approach.

==Maintenance==

Some fursuiters spray their costumes with Febreeze, Endbac, Lysol, or a generic antibacterial spray after each use. Usually fursuiters select a product that will kill bacteria, rather than just mask odours. During storage, the fursuiter may keep it stored with a fabric softener sheet, or a box of baking soda like the ones used in a fridge or freezer.

The fursuit is regularly brushed. Fursuiters usually try to brush the fur in such a way that it doesn't pull on the fur backing, as not to weaken it.

When it comes time to wash the suit, fursuiters consider each part individually. If foam is soaked in water, it may not dry quickly enough and start to grow bacteria or fungus before it does. Airbrushed patterns may fade if washed. Glue used to hold parts of the suit together may weaken if washed. Leather is usually not advisable to soak in water. If the suit has any electronics, those may be damaged by water. If wire or plastic canvas gives part of the suit its shape, it may not be advisable to soak that part, or at least not to machine-wash it.

The parts that will not be washed can usually be wiped with a damp cloth. Stains may be removable with a product like [[Bubble Gund]].

The parts that will be washed can either be machine washed or hand-washed. Usually the fursuit is turned inside-out and zipped up to avoid extra stress to the fur. No heat is used during the process as this can shrivel the fur. For detergent some will use a regular laundry detergent, while some may use a special detergent like Woolite. Putting undiluted detergent directly onto the fur may cause fading, so fursuiters try to avoid this except for treating stains. For machine-washing, the fursuiter chooses one of the more delicate cycles. For hand-washing, the fursuiter tries not to stretch the backing, and not to squeeze the fur into an alignment other than its natural lying flat state.

After the suit is washed, it is then dried. The fursuiter may fluff it up in the dryer in an air-only cycle. '''No heat is used in any step.''' Usually the fursuiter does not dry it completely, but takes it out and brushes it periodically until it is completely dry. Since waterlogged fur is heavy, the fursuiter may go to some lengths to lay it out flat while drying, so it doesn't stretch from the extra weight. Fans may be used to accelerate the drying process.

Fursuiters are divided over whether [[Wikipedia:drycleaning|dry cleaning]] is advisable for fursuits. Since dry-cleaners can choose from many different methods and settings, and there are many types of fur, it is likely that one answer does not apply to all situations.

== Performance ==

A key part of playing a character in suit is an engaging performance. The most expensive fursuit in the world will not help someone who does not know how to use it. Looking good is important, but not as important as ''acting''.

How the performer acts in costume reflects on how others relate to them. If the desired character is bouncy and bubbly, then acting that way is required to communicate it to spectators.

The design of the suit plays a part in some of the moves that can be done. For example, some fursuiters with floppy muzzles nod their heads up and down rapidly to simulate laughter or enjoyment. This cannot be done with suits with a rigid muzzle, or no muzzle at all.
