Hi. I just wanted to let you guys notify that ja.wikifur.com is under spam bombing by a user name, Ryu284.
https://ja.wikifur.com/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:Ryu284
He is hate spamming and posting sensitive information all around. I am trying to revert some of the changes he made, but it's really a wack-a-mole.
If someone is reading this message and has a control, would you take care of this issue and revert the harms? Thank you in advance.

[[User:Imuhata|Imuhata]] ([[User talk:Imuhata|talk]]) 14:53, 23 February 2023 (EST)
I am writing to request a revert and lock on my WikiFur user page, imuhata, which has been targeted by a vandal. I have experienced some trolling and harassment on the page, and I believe reverting it to an earlier version and locking it for further editing is the best course of action.

https://ja.wikifur.com/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:Imuhata

Also, could you please apply the same treatment to the next page as well?

I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope that we can resolve this issue quickly. Please let me know if you need any further information from me to proceed with this request.

Thank you for your help and support.

Imuhata: /* Ongoing events */

The following is a list of [[furry fandom|furry]] [[convention]]s and [[furmeet]]s from around the world, listed by officially announced attendance figures from the most recent year available. Each convention is listed only once. Historical North American convention figures are available from the [http://www.mustelid.com/otterhall/afcis.html Anthro Fandom Convention Infosheet]. Other information was found on respective convention websites or reports, where available, or entered by attendees.
==Ongoing events==
<!-- Flags are from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ -->
<!-- If you're updating this list, please update Wikipedia's as well -->
<!--
Guidelines for this list:
- Events should remain on this list for at least one year after last occurrence, even if cancelled for subsequent years;
- Events should be removed from this list after two years from last occurrence;
- If one annual occurrence of an event is cancelled with subsequent years indefinite, use your judgment; an event that skips one year and will reliably occur again the second year may remain on the list;
- If an "annual" event near year-end shifts from the beginning of the year to the end or vice versa, it should be treated as an annual event even though it may skip or occur twice in a calendar year;
- Events which occur more than once per year should be listed only once, with both the most recent attendance and the highest within the last year, using the higher number for ranking purposes.

{{unreferenced}}'''Post-con depression''', also known as '''PCD''' or '''Post-con syndrome''', is a temporary mental condition that may occur in individuals near the end of or shortly after a [[furry convention]] or [[furmeet]].

The most common symptoms are typically [[Wikipedia:Psychosomatic|psychosomatic]] and include [[Wikipedia:depression|depression]], loss of [[Wikipedia:appetite|appetite]], [[Wikipedia:insomnia|insomnia]], and in rare cases, [[Wikipedia:headache|headaches]].

== Causes ==
There are many reasons for PCD, caused either by the special demands brought on by conventions, or the immediate events after a convention.

There is a biological theory of why this may happen. If a person has so much fun at a con that they use up all their happy hormone ([[Wikipedia:serotonin|serotonin]]) they may feel depressed until their body has time to make more.

==== Physical ====

Despite being a mental state, the physical status of a person can often point to many causes for their behavior as well, all of which can be traced back to the convention itself. Many of these causes only arise after the convention, since any given problem may only appear once the fur has calmed back down and attempted to settle back into their normal daily demands.

* '''Physical exhaustion''' - The stress of walking around with items for several hours on end may be physically exhausting; even if this stress is not acknowledged during the convention, it can catch up with an individual eventually.
* '''Poor Convention diet''' - Being away from home (thus hindering the preparation of homemade meals) and trying to save money for other resources like merchandise, [[commission]]s, and lodging, some people may try to cut back on how much they spend on food.
*:As cheap food usually isn't the most healthy, this poor diet and the malnutrition that goes with it often contributes to a bad mood. In addition to poor diet, the party atmosphere may encourage people to drink or use other drugs they wouldn't normally consume, contributing to hangovers and other undesirable side effects.
* '''Lack of sleep''' - A desire to experience as much of the convention as possible can cause people to reject their normal sleep patterns, staying up late for dances or mature-themed [[panel]]s. This disruption can reduce the amount of energy people have, making them more irritable. In addition, there is some evidence to suggest disrupting sleep can induce depression. <ref>http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2005-06/uorm-imp062105.php</ref>
* '''Exposure to foreign illness''' - All sorts of people come from several parts of the world to attend conventions, and many of them may carry some form of illness (recovering, current, or only recently infected). As a result, conventions are a major infection vector. This is also a primary source of [[Con Crud]].
* '''Alcohol Consuption''' - Alcohol is classified as a Central Nervious System depressant. Binge drinking specifically, can contribute to feelings of unhappiness.<ref>http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/60184.php</ref>

==== Mental ====

Unlike the transition from a fur's normal life to a convention, the adjustment back may be difficult for several reasons.

* '''Unhappiness with real life''' - Conventions are seen as stressful yet fun, while normal life may merely be stressful. As a result, there is less enjoyment to be found in normal tasks, and this re-adjustment to normal behavior can cause problems.
* '''Separation from friends and family''' - Furs may be more social at conventions than they are in real life, and this separation merely reminds them that the time spent at convention is only temporary and fleeting.
* '''Adjustment of social status''' - Individuals that are popular at conventions may not be so in the 'real world' and so the check to their ego may cause old issues in real life to flare up.
* '''News events''' - The world does not stop for a convention, and so shocking news of events that people missed while away may jar them, especially if the event is a serious one like the death of a family member.
* '''Money shock''' - If someone has overspent at a convention, they may become highly sensitive to future spending efforts, at least for a little while, to compensate for the added costs.
* '''Over Stimulation''' - It has been speculated that increased social stimulation may use up available serotonin in the pre-frontal cortex. In addition norepinephrine and doplamine systems may also be involved and contribute to a "con hangover" <ref>http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18096212</ref>

== Treatment ==
Post-Con Depression, like most holiday-related stress, typically goes away on its own after a few days as the individual settles back into their daily lifestyle. In spite of this, the intensity of the depression
may be difficult, so there are a few things that can be done to mitigate this stress.

* '''Take care of your body''' - Healthy behaviors will usually be enough to counteract most physical stressors. Showering, sleeping, a full night's rest, and eating properly will help your body to cleanse itself. If you believe you are becoming ill as well, take vitamins and whatever other medicines are needed.
* '''Analyze your convention experience''' - Posting to an online journal or on a forum about the great time you had at the convention will help encourage others to do the same and to talk with you about it, providing social support and allowing you to see that many others are having the same issues with returning to normal life. Also, reliving the good parts of the convention may help you feel better.
*:If you work at conventions and/or this convention didn't go as well as you hoped it would, this is also a good time to consider how you can improve on things for next time to make your next convention a better one.
* '''Look forward to other conventions''' - There's always next year, or the next con as the case may be, and that means you have plenty of time to prepare for it now! Take advantage of this and get ready!
'''Furry fandom''', also known as '''furrydom''', '''furridom''', '''fur fandom''' or '''furdom''', refers to the ''[http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fandom fandom]'' for the ''furry genre'' of literature, art and entertainment. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of [[artist]]s, [[writer]]s, [[role play]]ers and general fans of the furry art forms who gather on the net and at [[convention]]s.

Members of the furry fandom, known as ''[[furry fan]]s'', [[furfan]]s, ''furries'', or ''furs'', particularly enjoy media that includes fictional [[anthropomorphic]] [[animal]] characters with [[human]] personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walking on two legs, and wearing clothing.

Characters that [[morph]] between human and animal form are also considered by some to be part of the genre. Even certain superheroes with animal derived powers are considered of furry interest by some fans. The general idea being a combination of human and animal attributes, for which there is no documented science regarding what degrees of mixture are required. Even characters like [[Wikipedia:Josie and the Pussycats|Josie and the Pussycats]] are considered of interest to furry fandom, though they only wear costumes with animal ears and [[tail]]s.<ref>[http://www.xydexx.com/anthrofurry/furries.htm Invasion of the Furries] - Description of furry fandom with Josie And The Pussy Cats reference.</ref>
==The furry genre==
===Definition===
The furry genre (sometimes referred to as a meta-genre) is based on the ''idea'' of [[fantasy]] animal characters, rather than any one type of fiction. Any title in any form of media can be considered relative to the furry genre simply by having a fantasy animal character in it. Such characters are most often seen in cartoons, [[comic]]s, [[science fiction]], allegorical novels, Gothic [[horror]] movies, commercials and [[video game]]s.

Outside the fandom, the most common term used to describe such characters is ''anthropomorphic'' (a word derived from the Greek; ''Anthropos Morphe'', literally meaning ''Human Form''). Those within the fandom prefer the term ''furry'' - hence the name ''furry fandom''. Other terms for these types of characters are ''[[funny animal]]'', ''[[talking animal]]'', or ''[[kemono]]'' in Japan, although each of these has subtle differences in meaning.

===History of the Furry Fandom===
:''See main article: [[History]]''

In the earlier days of the Furry Fandom, fans used to gather mostly at [[science fiction]], [[fantasy]], and comic conventions before the [[furry parties]] broke out into full-fledged [[furry]] conventions. The fandom for furry characters traces its organization back to a science fiction convention in 1980,<ref>''[http://www.flayrah.com/4117/retrospective-illustrated-chronology-furry-fandom-1966-1996 An Illustrated Chronology of Furry Fandom, 1966–1996]'' - [[Fred Patten]], [[Flayrah]] (15 July 2012)</ref> when a drawing of a character from [[Steve Gallacci]]’s Albedo started a discussion of anthropomorphic characters in science fiction novels, spawning a discussion group that met at various science fiction and comics conventions.

As the Internet became more accessible, it became the most popular means for furry fans to keep in touch and share their artistic efforts. This gained the fandom higher visibility and it began to grow rapidly.

Virtual environments, such as [[MUD|MUCK]]s, soon became the most popular places on the net for furry fans to meet and communicate. One of the oldest and largest MUCKs in existence is [[FurryMUCK]]. One of the newest virtual environments to attract furry fans is [[Second Life]].

Near the beginning of the 80’s, the furry genre enjoyed the first explosion of popularity it had seen since the 1930’s. Furry characters littered the animation world as well as toy stores. But there was also adult furry entertainment.

Today, those furry fans who have discovered the large concentration of fellow fans on the net have joined with them to create the virtual society that is the collective furry community. Other furry fans, particularly the computer illiterate, remain isolated in their interest with little to no awareness that there is an organized community for fans of the furry genre.

==The Furry community==
[[Image:GR_FC2007_fursuit_post-parade_photoshoot.jpg|thumb|250px|right|[[Fursuiter]]s at [[Further Confusion 2007]] [[fursuit parade]]]]
The furry community, referred to by many as furry fandom, or just the fandom, is the virtual universe inhabited by all those who refer to themselves as "Furries."

It is a separate entity from what many fans of furry entertainment mean when they use the term furry fandom. To a traditional furry fan, furry fandom means fans of furry characters, period. But the community encompasses a great deal more than just the fandom for furry characters. It includes elements of religion, lifestyle and philosophy.

"Furriness" is the action of doing anything related to the furry character of a person.

===Furry lifestyle===
: ''See article: [[Furry lifestyle]]''
The most commonly stated interest cited among members of the community, other than an enjoyment of furry entertainment, is a sense some may have of personally identifying with a certain kind of animal.

This is a relatively common aspect of human nature. Many people may feel an affinity for a certain type of animal. Marketers of collectibles have been creating products for people with such feelings for generations. Though it has rarely been something one had an open atmosphere in which to explore and get more deeply in touch with. The furry community, through its many virtual role play environments, provides this avenue for exploration into why certain people feel their particular affinity.

Some may view animals with a kind of religious reverence reminiscent of [[Buddhism]], [[Shamanism]] or [[Otherkin]]. They may feel that they are the reincarnation of an animal, or that an animal spirit watches over them.

===Creativity===
[[Image:DealersDenAC2006.jpg|thumb|250px|right|[[Dealers den]] at [[Anthrocon 2006]]]]
Because the furry genre is widely considered to be a children’s market, there is a considerable lack of furry entertainment specifically geared to adult aged audiences. The community of mostly adult aged furry fans that has formed around the genre is particularly dedicated to filling the need for such products through fan creativity.

Content available from furry fans on the internet and at conventions covers a wide range of interests, including all manner of fantasy, philosophy, sex, politics, religion and lifestyle.

The genre is considered to be so versatile that it can extend into just about any form of creativity, from things as simple as recipe books with anthropomorphic illustrations <ref>[http://www.ozfoxes.com/cat3.htm Sweet Treats] - an example of a furry cookbook.</ref> to technical creations as complicated as interactive furry companions for your desktop.<ref>[http://www.foxee.net/ Foxee] - example of an interactive character.</ref> Other forms of furry craftsmanship include the creation of ''flash animation'' <ref>[http://www.illwillpress.com/ Foamy The Squirrel] - example of a flash animation character.</ref> and [[fursuits]].

But by far the most prolific output of furry fandom is artwork. Furry artwork produced by the fandom ranges from basic cartooning to highly detailed works fit for hanging in galleries. Furry artists also create a wide variety of comic strips. The subject matter of this artwork being as flexible as any other area of the furry arts, ranging from innocent depictions of cute furry character suitable for all ages, to mature works that are age restricted. There is also some writing in the furry fandom.

===Sociability===
Others may join the furry community simply because it is a free environment where one can form friendships without the normal social problems of having to hide one’s [[sexual orientation]]. It is also a place where some may come to find compassionate understanding and assistance with personal problems. The furry community prides itself on a concept of open mindedness and tolerance.

===Fetishes===
: ''See article: [[Fetish]]''
The furry community also attracts furry related fetishists who warm to the non-condemning atmosphere and the ability to express fantasies of a sexual nature that would rarely be tolerated anywhere else.

Surveys place the number of extreme fetishists in the community at a comparatively low percentage, though the few there are tend to be extremely visible on the net.

===Creativity beyond the furry genre===
Some creative members of the community create works that are not furry of nature. [[2, The Ranting Gryphon]] creates rants on real world politics and the state of human society. [[Joe Strike]] has written film reviews for the ''New York Daily News''. [[Steven F. Scharff]] maintains a database on new country projects, "micronations" and independence and sedition movements. [[Tom Howling]] writes full-time about technology and science. A number of furry musical groups produce music without furry subject matter. Some furry online radio stations play popular music that rarely has furry subject matter. And some amateur film makers in the fandom create films that have no visible furry themes.

This sometimes brings the community unexpected positive attention, though it further confuses people as to just what the furry fandom is supposed to be about.

==Furry controversies==
===Defining the genre===
: ''See article: [[What is Furry?]]''
Historically, very little has been written about the concept of furry as a genre of entertainment. And the community itself sometimes has difficulty getting a grip on what the main object of the fandom is supposed to be. Consequently, some prominent members of the community may express ideas of limitation based on their personal taste in anthropomorphics. Others may feel that their taste in anthropomorphics are excluded by such limitations.

There are no written rules as to what types or levels of human and animal attributes are necessary for inclusion in the genre. The only noticeable defining factor seems to be that there be some kind of combination of the two. Thus, it is best to approach the genre with the broadest possible view, rather than being influenced by individuals expressing dissatisfaction with areas of the furry arts they personally don’t like.

* [http://web.archive.org/web/20070301150410/http://www.geocities.com/thehalflifecoder/Rants/Furry.html Furry FAQ: State of the Fandom]

===Misinformation===
Many people misunderstand the fandom due to a lack of non-prejudicial information being available. In many cases, the first things outsiders see of the fandom is sensationalistic [[List of media links|fiction on TV shows]]. Others may take note of the adult themed art on the net and assume this is the whole point of the fandom.

===Sexuality===
The free atmosphere of acceptance in the furry community makes it far more likely for members to be open about their sexual preferences.<ref name="rust">[http://www.visi.com/~phantos/furrysoc.html The Sociology of Furry Fandom]. Retrieved October 19, 2006.</ref> As such, most [[non-furries]] believe that nearly all furry fans are [[gay]].<ref name="rust"/> Recent surveys suggest that the percentage of homosexuals and bisexuals in the fandom [[sexual preference|may be higher than in the general population]]. Furries have proposed various theories for this.

Confessions of more unusual sexuality and lifestyle have also been noted in the furry community, and though the majority of furry fans will attempt to be tolerant, certain sexual practices will stretch the tolerance of certain furry fans to the breaking point.

In particular, discussion of [[bestiality]] is a trigger for angry debate within the community. Many insist that absolute tolerance must be absolute, while others resent the association of the fandom with a practice that is not only illegal in many places, but is considered by many to be a form of animal abuse. Because of these two hallmarks of the current fandom&nbsp;— tolerance and the protection of real life animals&nbsp;— acceptance of bestialitists is a hotly contested topic of the furry community.

Another practice that sparks controversy from within the fandom itself is [[plushophilia]]. Though plushophilia is physically harmless, being confronted with it causes extreme reactions on both sides of the issue within the fandom&nbsp;— from total acceptance to outright disgust.

====Erotic furry art====
: ''See article: [[Furotica]]''
If one looks on games like ''[[Star Fox]]'' and movies like ''[[Over The Hedge]]'' as the main furry genre, and the erotic art coming out of the community as a parody of the main genre, a direct parallel to [[Wikipedia:anime|anime]] and [[Wikipedia:hentai|hentai]] can be seen as well as a parallel with the general fantasy genre and erotic fantasy art. Types of hentai might straddle both furry and non-furry genre. The major difference is that the output of furry titles by major companies is relatively small when compared to the output of other genres.

Thus it is easy to mistake the mature art aspect of furry fandom for being more prominent than in other fandoms. When, in reality, the amount of erotic content coming out of the furry community pales in comparison to the anime/manga erotic output, which is much better organized and even supported by the main industry.

Anime fans enjoy the availability of endless hours of erotic animation created by professional companies, and even the erotic manga comics created by anime fans display a level of professionalism that furry artists can not even begin to aspire to. Yet, this tends to not be a problem for anime fandom, as the high output of non-erotic anime keeps the erotic subgenre in perspective as parody. While with furry fandom, it is highly likely that the first output of the fandom an outsider will see will be something of an erotic nature or sexual humor art.<ref>[http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=furries&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2 A Google Images search for "furries" generates] [[furotica]] as its initial results.</ref>

===Fringe segments of the community===
Just about anyone with any kind of interest that can somehow be tied to furry can set up a new neighborhood in the furry community for that interest. For some reason, the furries who create these neighborhoods have a tendency to give them names that sound worse than the actual intent, and thus may generate prejudice or attract the wrong kind of attention.

* [[Babyfurs]] are interested in furry child characters.
* [[Nazi Furs]] are interested in furry World War 2 characters.
* [[Postfurry]]

===Furry hate groups===
: ''See article: [[Anti-furries]]''
Furry hate groups have been created that ridicule the fandom at every opportunity and continue the spread of various types of misinformation, largely based on overplaying activities that exist in the fringe areas of the community and have no direct relationship to the fandom.

It is the general assertion of fans that these hate groups are mistaken in their assumption that furry fandom is all about sexualizing animal characters and animal related fetishes. It has also been confessed by certain furry haters that they attack furry fandom, not out of any belief that the furry fandom is any worse than other fandoms in these respects, but rather because it is much easier to get an entertaining reaction out of furries than it is to get a reaction out of [[Wikipedia:Star Trek fandom|Trekkies]] or [[Wikipedia:Otaku|Otaku]].

Thus, the anti-furry movement exists largely for entertainment value and should be taken with a grain of salt. Furries may even be seen to play along with furry hate groups, as some furries insist that it is important to maintain a sense of humor about such things. Indeed, there is hardly a fandom in existence that does not parody and laugh at its own idiosyncrasies and stereotypes.

===Self criticism===
The furry community also is sometimes criticized by its own for being too tolerant of various things, especially the over visibility of controversial fetishes.

Particularly for those who are only in the community because of an interest in furry cartoons, it may be found painful that the community feels free to associate them with things that seem completely unrelated to a fandom for furry characters.

Other furries will then turn on those who claim not to want to be associated with every controversial element in the community and accuse them of being a detriment to the stability of the community, often accompanied with accusations of Nazi behavior or being a [[Burned Fur]].

Over the years many furries have [[Leave The Fandom|left the fandom]] in a state of grief over such controversies and disputes.

===Unsympathetic media===
: ''See article: [[Timeline of media coverage]]''
[[Image:KageTalksToReportersAC2006.jpg|thumb|right|[[Uncle Kage]] talks to [[Wikipedia:KDKA-TV|KDKA-TV]] reporters]]
In years past, the only value the mainstream media has seen in furry fandom has been over emphasis on the fetishists and lifestylers within the community. Many of those who were interviewed for such media portrayals claim they were deliberately misquoted. As a result, misunderstanding of the nature of the fandom has been widespread. However, this appears to be changing, as less sensational media sources are starting to take note of the community, which are more inclined to see interest in the fandom aspect. <ref>[http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/9383594/detail.html Furries Descend On Golden Triangle] - example of more favorable press coverage.</ref>

===Furry politics===
As with any type of community, even a virtual one, political issues will arise and certain people will champion them, attempting to attain a measure of power and control over the rest of the community. However, the community is seldom able to be united on any single issue. And most attempts to force change fall flat.

Political topics in the community can revolve around pushing tolerance for controversial segments of the community, people trying to put limits on the genre celebrated by the fandom, and those who wish to completely separate the furry community from any relationship with the mainstream entertainment industry.

A typical example of furry politics is the attempt to draw a distinction between a "furry comic" created by self professed members of the fandom, and a traditional "funny animal comic," created by someone who has not acknowledged a connection to the fandom. This type of political ploy may cause a lot of heated debate, but in the end there is no artistic difference between the two, and furry fans rarely stop to ask an artist’s affiliations before enjoying his work.

==Becoming mainstream ==
The '''mainstreaming''' of the [[furry fandom]] is a subject for ongoing debate. As the fandom grows and becomes more popular in the [[Wikipedia:mainstreaming|mainstream]], some furs worry about the fandom's popularity and the effect it will have on its image. It can ostensibly be argued that increased awareness and popularity of Furry in mainstream culture could result in increased public acceptance and lessened negativity towards the fandom. The alternative viewpoint, however, suggests that if Furry becomes too mainstream, it will lose its appeal and fail to attract and retain members to the fandom.
:''This article is about the term. For other uses, see [[Furry (disambiguation)]].''
[[File:Furry2.jpg|Right|thumb|[[Sequential Art|Scarlet]] ponders the eternal question (© PMJ)]]
The word '''furry''' (''adj'', '''f'eree'''), has several meanings, dependent on the context in which it is used. Predominantly, it means "consisting of or resembling fur".<ref >[[Wikipedia:Furry|furry]] at Wikipedia</ref> It also pertains to an interest in [[Anthropomorphic|anthropomorphic animals]] and/or mythological or imaginary creatures which possess [[human]] or superhuman capabilities.

The plural form of furry in all its contexts is '''furs''' or '''furries'''; the subjects of furry interest are also known as furries. Because [[:Category:People|people]] in the fandom tend to identify closely with their avatars (or [[fursona]]s), the word is often used to mean a group of furry [[character]]s in [[furry art|art]] or [[roleplay]].

== What it means to ''be'' furry ==
[[File:Proud furry huge.png|right|160px]]
Someone who says they are furry is generally expressing an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures (and perhaps some affiliation to [[furry fandom]]). They may express that that interest in a variety of ways - through art and stories through to roleplay and performance. How deep or meaningful an interest in Furry is varies greatly from person to person.

== Furry's gamut of interests ==
Below is a list of common interests with which a fur is likely to identify. A furry may be interested in any or all of them, to any degree.

=== Cartoons and games ===

Interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures can be as simple as the many popular furry cartoon characters, known as [[funny animal]]s. These may include [[Bugs Bunny]], [[Tony the Tiger]], [[Sly Cooper]], [[Star Fox]], etc. However, someone who merely happens to like these characters is not necessarily a furry; the degree and nature of one's interest is relevant here.

=== Spirituality ===
Some furs believe they have a spiritual connection to a particular animal which is typically their [[fursona]], but also may be a [[totem]]. Strong spiritual believers may often say that they are "an animal in a human body" (and in fact may identify themselves as [[otherkin]], [[were]]s and/or [[therian]]s which are their own categories and not linked to the furry fandom just by interest). Some join and find the furry fandom to be a place to be themselves, as most of these groups are underground and the furry fandom is more open to the world. However, not all therians have their [[theriotype]] as their fursona.

=== Art and creativity ===

Some furs may be interested only in the creative aspects of the furry fandom. Furry content, both online and off, is easy to obtain, and available in vast amounts, and furs produce new works regularly. Furry artwork is also done by many nonfurries as well in targeting the fandom. Others may disassociate themselves from the fandom and refer to themselves as funny animal artists. Furries may also enjoy [[role-playing]] a particular furry character or fursona, sometimes writing about this character or recording their online interactions for posterity.

=== Fursuiting ===

[[Image:Autumn 012.jpg|150px|thumb|right|[[Autumn Vixen]] poses in fursuit.]]
Some furries enjoy the practice of dressing up in a costume that is typically designed after a fursona.<ref>{{newslink|UC Davis posts furry survey results}}</ref> These "[[fursuits]]" are usually worn at [[conventions]], and a few are even designed to accommodate sexual situations. Some furries opt to wear a "partial" suit, consisting of a head, tail, and paws, instead of a full fursuit; others may just wear a tail or various other pieces. While only a minority (about 15-20%) consider themselves fursuiters, they tend to be highly visible at events where many furries are present.<ref>According to the [[Furry Survey]] at [http://www.klisoura.com/ot_furrysurvey.php], about 16% of respondents (1242 out of 7760) describe themselves as fursuiters. In addition, during the three year period ending September 2009, there were 20 conventions which had an attendance of at least 500 and a fursuit parade count. Of those, the percentage of attendees who participated in the fursuit parade ranged from 12.4 to 21.5, with most falling between 14 and 18.</ref>

=== Sexuality ===

To some furs, the sexual [[Xenophilia|attraction]] to anthropomorphic animals is a part of what makes them furry. This is a topic of much controversy, as it has been the subject of early media attention (such as that from [[Wired|Wired Magazine]] and [[Vanity Fair]]), leading to its becoming a common [[stereotype]] of the furry community at large. This has spawned a few groups in response (such as the [[Burned Furs]]) with a desire to discourage this angle, or create a clear distinction between these furries and the rest of the community.

== Other contexts of Furry ==

From within the fandom, anything classified as an anthropomorphic animal and/or creature could be called a furry. That could be anything from [[Scooby Doo]] to various sports [[mascot]]s to [[Omaha the Cat Dancer]]. Since mainstream characters are generally not created with furries in mind, the furry context is presumed by most outsiders to not be present despite subcultural interest.

Any art showcasing anthropomorphic animals is generally considered furry artwork. Artwork that contains furries in sexual situations may be called [[yiff]] or [[spooge]] art.

=== Non-furry furries ===

Anthropomorphic creatures that are also considered to be furry (even with the lack of pelt or fur) include (but are not limited to): [[dragon]]s and [[lizard]]s (also known as [[scalies]] and [[herp]]s, respectively), [[Cetacean]]s ([[dolphin]]s and [[Orca]]s), [[bird]]s and [[gryphon]]s (also known as [[featheries]] or '''[[avian]]s'''), and [[taur]]s ([[centaur]]s being the prime example).
<!-- PLEASE ADD CATEGORIES AND INTERWIKIS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE -->

This is the {{tl|category handler}} meta-template.

It helps other templates to automate both categorization and [[Wikipedia:Category suppression|category suppression]].

Already when used with its default settings this template prevents auto-categorization in some namespaces and on some pages where we usually don't want categorization. Thus even the most basic usage like "<code><nowiki>{{category handler|[[Category:Somecat]]}}</nowiki></code>" sees to that templates don't auto-categorize in the wrong places.

This template makes it easy to choose in what namespaces a template should and should not categorize. And it makes it easy to use different categories in different namespaces. And this template uses a central blacklist where we can add pages and page types where templates should not auto-categorize.

=== When not to use this template ===

If a template only needs to categorize in one of the namespaces main (articles), file (images) or category, then using this template is overkill. Then instead use one of {{tl|main other}}, {{tl|file other}}, or {{tl|category other}}. But if your template needs to categorize in any other namespace, then we recommend you use this template, since it provides proper category suppression and makes it easy to select how to categorize in the different namespaces.

=== Namespaces ===

This template detects and groups all the different [[Wikipedia:Namespace|namespaces]] used on Wikipedia into several types. These types are used as parameter names in this template.

:'''main''' = Main/article space, as in normal Wikipedia articles.
:'''talk''' = Any talk space, such as page names that start with "Talk:", "User talk:", "File talk:" and so on.
:'''user, wikipedia, file, mediawiki, template, help, category, portal''' and '''book''' = The other namespaces except the talk pages.
:'''other''' = Any namespaces that were not specified as a parameter to the template. See examples below.

=== Basic usage ===

This template takes two or more parameters. Here's an example with the full template code for an article message box:

<pre>
{{Ambox
| text = This is a box used in articles.
}}{{category handler
| [[Category:Somecat]]
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}<noinclude>
{{Documentation}}
<!--Add categories and interwikis to the /doc subpage-->
</noinclude>
</pre>

The above example uses the default settings for {{tlf|category handler}}. That means the box will categorize on pages in the following namespaces:
:'''main''', '''file''', '''help''', '''category''', '''portal''' and '''book'''
But it will ''not'' categorize in the following namespaces:
:'''talk''', '''user''', '''wikipedia''', '''mediawiki''' and '''template'''

And it will ''not'' categorize on blacklisted pages. (See section [[#Blacklist|blacklist]] below.)

The reason this template does not categorize in some of the namespaces is that in those namespaces most templates are just demonstrated or listed, not used. Thus most templates should not categorize in those namespaces.

Any template that is meant for one or more of the namespaces where this template categorizes can use the basic syntax as shown above.

=== Advanced usage ===

This template takes one or more parameters named after the different page types as listed in section [[#Namespaces|namespaces]] above. By using those parameters you can specify exactly in which namespaces your template should categorize. Like this:

<pre>
{{mbox
| text = This is a box for articles and talk pages.
}}{{category handler
| main = [[Category:Somecat1]]   <!--Categorize in main (article) space-->
| talk = [[Category:Somecat2]]   <!--Categorize in talk space-->
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true" works-->
}}
</pre>

The above box will only categorize in main and talk space. But it will not categorize on /archive pages since they are blacklisted. (See section [[#Blacklist|blacklist]] below.) And if you need to demonstrate (discuss) that box on a talkpage, then you can feed "<code>nocat=true</code>" to prevent that template from categorizing. (See section [[#Nocat|nocat]] below.) Like this:

<pre>
== My new template ==
Hey guys, have you seen my new template?
{{mytemp|nocat=true}}
Nice, isn't it?
--~~~~
</pre>

Sometimes we want to use the same category in several namespaces, then do like this:

<pre>
{{mbox
| text = This is a box used in several namespaces.
}}{{category handler
| main = [[Category:Somecat1]]
| 1 = [[Category:Somecat2]]   <!--For help and user space-->
| help = 1
| user = 1
| talk =     <!--No categories on talk pages-->
| other = [[Category:Somecat3]]   <!--For all other namespaces-->
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}
</pre>

In the above example we use a numbered parameter to feed one of the categories, and then we tell this template to use that numbered parameter for both the help and user space.

This template understands the numbered parameters 1 to 10.

The '''other''' parameter defines what should be used in the remaining namespaces that have not explicitly been fed data.

Note the empty but defined '''talk''' parameter. That stops this template from showing what has been fed to the '''other''' parameter, when in talk space.

This template also has a parameter called '''all'''. It works like this:

<pre>
{{mbox
| text = This is a box used in all namespaces.
}}{{category handler
| all = [[Category:Somecat1]]   <!--Categorize in all namespaces-->
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}
</pre>

The above example will categorize in all namespaces, but not on blacklisted pages. If you want to demonstrate that box on a page, then use "<code>nocat=true</code>" to prevent the template from categorizing.

We suggest avoiding the '''all''' parameter, since templates should preferably only categorize in the namespaces they need to.

The all parameter can also be combined with the rest of the parameters. Like this:

<pre>
{{mbox
| text = This is a box used in all namespaces.
}}{{category handler
| all = [[Category:Somecat1]]   <!--Categorize in all namespaces-->
| main = [[Category:Somecat2]]   <!--And add this in main space-->
| other = [[Category:Somecat3]]   <!--And add this in all other namespaces-->
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}
</pre>

If the above box is placed on an article, then it will add the categories "Somecat1" and "Somecat2". But on all other types of pages it will instead add "Somecat1" and "Somecat3". As the example shows, the all parameter works independently of the rest of the parameters.

=== Subpages ===

This template understands the '''subpage''' parameter. Like this:

<pre>
{{category handler
| subpage = no    <!--Don't categorize on subpages-->
| wikipedia = [[Category:Somecat]]
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}
</pre>

If "<code>subpage=no</code>" then this template will ''not'' categorize on subpages. For the rare occasion you ''only'' want to categorize on subpages, then use "<code>subpage=only</code>". If '''subpage''' is empty or undefined then this template categorizes both on basepages and on subpages.

=== Blacklist ===

This template has a blacklist of the pages and page types where templates should not auto-categorize. Thus templates that use this meta-template will for instance not categorize on /archive pages and on the subpages of [[Wikipedia:Template messages]].

If you want a template to categorize on a blacklisted page, then feed "<code><nowiki>nocat = false</nowiki></code>" to the template when you place it on the page, thus skipping the blacklist check. Note that this template only categorizes if it has data for the namespace. For instance, if the basic syntax is used (see [[#Basic usage|basic usage]] above), then even if you set "<code>nocat = false</code>" the template will not categorize on a talk page, since it has no data for talk pages. But it has data for help space, so on a blacklisted help page it will categorize.

The blacklist is in the sub-template {{tl|category handler/blacklist}}. To see or update the blacklist, go there.

=== The "nocat" parameter ===

This template understands the '''nocat''' parameter:

* If "<code>nocat = true</code>" then this template does ''not'' categorize.
* If '''nocat''' is empty or undefined then this template categorizes as usual.
* If "<code>nocat = false</code>" this template categorizes even when on blacklisted pages. (See section [[#Blacklist|blacklist]] above.)

Templates that use {{tlf|category handler}} should forward '''nocat''', so they too understand '''nocat'''. The code "<code><nowiki>nocat = {{{nocat|}}}</nowiki></code>" shown in the examples on this page does that.

=== The "categories" parameter ===

For backwards compatibility this template also understands the '''categories''' parameter. It works the same as '''nocat'''. Like this:

* If "<code>categories = no</code>" then this template does ''not'' categorize.
* If '''categories''' is empty or undefined then this template categorizes as usual.
* If "<code>categories = yes</code>" this template categorizes even when on blacklisted pages.

When adding this template to a template that already uses the "<code>categories = no</code>" logic, then you can do the following to not break any existing usage:

<pre>
{{category handler
| [[Category:Somecat]]
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
| categories = {{{categories|}}}   <!--So "categories=no" works-->
}}
</pre>

=== The "category2" parameter ===

For backwards compatibility this template kind of supports the old "category =" parameter. But the parameter name "category" is already used in this template to feed category data for when in category space. So instead this template uses '''category2''' for the usage similar to '''nocat'''. Like this:

* If "<code>category2 =</code>" (empty but defined), or "<code>category2 = no</code>", or if '''category2''' is fed any other data (except as described in the next two points), then this template does ''not'' categorize.
* If '''category2''' is undefined or if "<code>category2 = ¬</code>", then this template categorizes as usual.
* If "<code>category2 = yes</code>" this template categorizes even when on blacklisted pages.

When adding this template to a template that already uses the "<code>category =</code>" logic, then you can do like this to not break any existing usage:

<pre>
{{category handler
| [[Category:Somecat]]
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
| category2 = {{{category|¬}}}   <!--So "category =" works-->
}}
</pre>

Note that the "<code>¬</code>" is necessary, it helps this template to detect if the '''category''' parameter is defined but empty, or undefined.

=== Categories and text ===

Besides from categories, you can feed anything else to this template, for instance some text. Like this:

<pre>
{{tmbox
| text = This is a talk page message box.
}}{{category handler
| talk = [[Category:Somecat]]
| other = :::::This template should only be used on talk pages.
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}
</pre>

When the template above is shown on anything else than a talk page, it will look like this (note the text below the box):

{{tmbox
| text = This is a talk page message box.
| nocat = true    <!--So this box doesn't add "Category:Talk message boxes"-->
}}{{category handler
| talk = [[Category:Somecat]]
| other = :::::This template should only be used on talk pages.
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
}}

That text will not show on blacklisted pages, so don't use this method to show any important information. Feeding "<code>nocat = true</code>" to the template hides the text, just as it suppresses any categories.

=== The "page" parameter ===

For testing and demonstration purposes this template can take a parameter named '''page'''. Like this:

<pre>
{{category handler
| main = Category:Some cat
| talk = Category:Talk cat
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
| page = User talk:Example
}}
</pre>

In the above code we on purpose left out the brackets around the category names so we see the output on the page. No matter on what kind of page the code above is used it will return this:

:{{category handler
| main = Category:Some cat
| talk = Category:Talk cat
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
| page = User talk:Example
}}

The '''page''' parameter makes this template behave exactly as if on that page. Even the blacklist works. The pagename doesn't have to be an existing page.

If the '''page''' parameter is empty or undefined, the name of the current page determines the result.

You can make it so your template also understands the '''page''' parameter. That means you can test how your template will categorize on different pages, without having to actually edit those pages. Then do like this:

<pre>
{{category handler
| main = Category:Some cat
| talk = Category:Talk cat
| nocat = {{{nocat|}}}   <!--So "nocat=true/false" works-->
| page = {{{page|}}}   <!--For testing-->
}}
</pre>

=== Parameters ===

List of all parameters:

<pre>
{{category handler
| [[Category:Somecat]]
| subpage = no / only
| 1 =
...
| 10 =
| all = [[Category:Somecat]] / Text
| main = 1 / ... / 10 / [[Category:Somecat]] / Text
...
| other = 1 / ... / 10 / [[Category:Somecat]] / Text

| nocat = {{{nocat|}}} / true / false
| categories = {{{categories|}}} / no / yes
| category2 = {{{category|¬}}} / 'empty' / no / 'not defined' / ¬ / yes

| page  = {{{page|}}} / User:Example
}}
</pre>

Note that empty values to the "main" ... "other" parameters have special meaning (see examples above). The "all" parameter doesn't understand numbered parameters, since there should never be a need for that.

=== Technical details ===
The centralised category suppression blacklist is in the sub-template {{tl|category handler/blacklist}}. To see or update the blacklist, go there.

For its internal parameter processing, this template uses the sub-template {{tl|category handler/numbered}}.

For more technical details see the [[Template talk:Category handler|talk page]].

=== Usage ===
This template marks the <CODE>kanji</CODE> segment as being in Japanese kanji and/or kana, which helps user agents (web browsers and so on) to display it correctly. It also applies the <TT>t_nihongo_kanji</TT> CSS class.

{{Details|2=when to use this template|Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)}}

; Syntax
{|class=wikitable
|Without lead=yes
|With lead=yes
|-
|{{Nihongo|English|kanji/kana|rōmaji|lead=yes|extra|extra2}}
|}
; Parameters
* ''English''. Optional. The word as translated into English. Note that this will sometimes be the actual Japanese word due to it being adopted into English.
* ''kanji/kana''. Required. The word as written in Japanese (kanji, kana, Roman letters, and possibly other marks).
* ''rōmaji''. Optional. Transliteration of the Japanese word, using Hepburn Romanization.
* ''lead=yes''. Optional. This should be used for the first instance of Japanese, usually in the lead. It gives the reader an idea what kind of non-English writing they are viewing.
* ''extra''. Optional. Can be used to add a gloss (particularly if there is no English form). Can also be expressed as a named parameter, <CODE>extra=</CODE>
* ''extra2''. Optional. Can also be expressed as a named parameter, <CODE>extra2=</CODE>. It is only useful in ";" definitions (extra2 will be displayed without bold, whereas text following the template will get the bold).

A '''furry convention''', also known as a '''conference''', or just a '''con''', is a gathering of [[furries]], [[artist]]s, and (usually) [[vendor]]s at a central location. Conventions are usually held in midsize to large cities with airport access and stretch for three days or longer, typically over a weekend or holiday.

The cost to register for a furry convention as a non-[[Convention sponsorship|sponsor]] is typically $60 or less, but once one figures in the costs of transportation, lodging, and meals, attendees are likely to spend upwards of $400 to attend. Some furries do not attend any conventions, while others attend several each year.

==Features==

Furry conventions vary, but typically one might expect to find several of the following:
* Some form of ''accommodation'' (which may or may not be included in the convention fee)
* One or more of a ''[[Dealer's Den]]'', ''[[Artists Alley]]'', or ''[[art gallery]]'', where [[:Category:Artists|artists]] display and sell their work
* Tutorials and workshops for those interested in [[:Category:Arts and crafts|arts and crafts]]
* Special events, such as a ''[[fursuit]] parade'', [[dance]]s/disco, [[masquerade]]s, special interest panels, live animal demonstrations or a ''[[charity auction]]''

Although it is not usually billed as one of the attractions, conventions are also a great way to get to know other members of the community, for varying levels of "get to know". Some furries have compiled a list of what they believe is [http://www.tigerden.com/infopage/furry/con-tips.txt essential] to take to a convention.

===Duration===

Annual furry conventions tend to last approximately for 3-4 days, usually over a weekend from Friday to Sunday or over the duration of a holiday, in order to avoid disruption of job or school schedules for most attendees. Exceptions to this trend include:

* [[Further Confusion]] - lasts, as of 2010, from Thursday to the following Monday
* [[Eurofurence]] - lasts from Wednesday to the following Sunday
* [[Feral!]] - lasts for five days in early September

Various reasons for five-day conventions range from either catering to the largest-possible amount of arriving attendees (including those who may come well after the event has begun) or hosting the largest-possible amount of activities in the most logical amount of time.

==Non-profit status==

Many of the larger furry conventions are organized as [[Wikipedia:Non-profit organizations|non-profit organizations]], usually with a view to achieving [[Wikipedia:Tax exemption|tax-exempt status]]. Depending on the type of non-profit and the activities that they undertake, part of an attendee's memberships may or may not be deductible from their own income taxes as well. For example, [[Midwest Furry Fandom]] ([[Midwest FurFest]]) is a 501(c)(3) public charity, as is [[Anthropomorphic Arts and Education]] ([[Further Confusion]]). Conversely, [[Anthrocon]], Inc. is a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club and does not qualify.<ref>[http://www.guidestar.org/ GuideStar]</ref>

Regardless of status, furry conventions both large and small regularly sponsor [[charity|charities]], either through provision of fundraising opportunities, a slice of [[art auction]] proceeds, or outright donations of surplus funds.
