The basic concept of the Balloonie is a living, animate version of a "real" creature made of rubber, latex, or similar materials. == Types of Balloonies ==

The traditional Balloonie is styled after stretchy latex balloons - hence the moniker - with an emphasis on being like a three-dimensional cartoon character; able to bend, stretch, and expand to great extents as if animated, but in (fictionalized) reality. Within [[Furry fandom]], an example of a Balloonie character who has often had expanding properties is Karl Jorgensen's [[Xydexx|Xydexx Squeakypony]], a purple, anthropomorphic unicorn. One of the main characters of the [[webcomic]] [[Latex Blue]], a blue catgirl named Iris, is a Balloonie.

In roleplay and fiction, the explanation for such characters has ranged from the magical to technological, and in some cases, strange and exotic biology. Some balloonie characters have the special feature of being ''un''poppable, and no amount of force or sharpness can pierce their surface. Players who create unpoppable characters frequently advertise this feature, since the common expectation of an inflatable object is that it is fragile and vulnerable to punctures.

Not all Balloonie fans enjoy the theme of cartoonish deformation or the properties of latex balloons. Many characters are patterned after inflatable toys, such as (but not limited to) water floats and inflatable animals. These characters are often conceptualized as being constructed from PVC or vinyl plastic. Some characters have exaggerated features like riding handles, hanger loops, and unrealistic colors or product information printed on them to suggest that they are still toys despite their ability to move, think, and speak. (It should be noticed that drawing them in a realistic style is known to cause an effect called the Uncanny valley)

The nature of Balloonie characters also makes them popular with those who have a general attraction to materials such as rubber, and in some circles these Furry fans and the rubber, latex, or vinyl themed characters they create are called [[Rubberfurs]]. With the crossover between rubber fetishes and related [[paraphilia]]s, it is unsurprising a number of Balloonie fans and Rubberfurs are fans of the erotic uses of rubberized items and/or are [[inflatophilia|inflatophiles]]. Not all Balloonie and inflatable fans consider themselves erotic inflatophiles, and primarily enjoy the idea of characters that happen to share the appearance and properties of rubber, toys, or cartoons.

In some [[Roleplay|roleplay]] venues such as [[MUCK]]s, the fantastical nature of Balloonie characters might be seen as unrealistic and inappropriate, depending on the setting. Tongue-in-cheek derision of such characters has on occasion taken the form of a non-consensual scene where a character acts out [[Popping]] a Balloonie with a sharp object. Some fans see this as particularly mean-spirited behavior, and the equivalent of inflicting serious harm on a flesh-and-blood character. In most cases, Balloonies have shown a tendency to be seen as playful and harmless characters.

Sometimes, a balloonie may be somewhat inanimate, but a lot of characters may often only be inanimate if they are deflated or popped. The air inside themselves often acts as muscles, and sometimes the balloonie could even be full of some other kind of material, often a liquid like gel, water, jello, or even Latex Foam. (Often making them harder to pop)

== Creation ==

Balloonies are brought to life through a variety of means. Most are considered to be magical creations of some kind, but this creation may be deliberate or accidental. They may have been created as "regular" balloon-like toys and animated, or be "real" animals that have been turned into inflatables. They may even be one creature trapped within the shell of another. Some balloonies and [[inanimorph|inanimorphs]] have been imagined to be the products of "mad science" and technology; such as nanomachines used to give life to seemingly lifeless materials.

When roleplayed, the creation of a balloonie tends to come about through the deliberate action of a second person. However, the method varies widely. The "victim" may be tricked into consuming some kind of food or drink that has the effect of converting them into a balloonie. They may come into contact with some kind of substance that covers them with a balloon-like coating, perhaps applied directly by the second party, perhaps just prepared in advance by them (such as a pool). They may simply find that the touch of the second party has the desired effect, particularly if this party is a balloonie already.<ref>[http://www.furaffinity.net/view/254366/ Example of transformation by touch]</ref> Often there is an element of [[Wikipedia:coercive persuasion|coercive persuasion]] involved, especially if the second party is looking to have them as a toy to play with.

Only a relatively small number of balloonie characters appear to have been conceived as having always been such creatures. Also, a few characters exist for whom transforming into a balloonie is a voluntary ability, and both states are equally natural.

Acacia is a yellow rubber inflatable palomino, his body is a bright yellow colour with a white mane and tail made up of individual strands of latex which act as hairs. He is rather playful and likes to play jokes on people which can sometimes go too far, he's usually pretty quiet and keeps to himself until he warms up to people. He runs a channel called #Squeaky_Paws on furnet which caters to balloonies and rubberfurs as well as those whom enjoy them.

Hydrassas Dragonash is an Australian dragon who has been in the fandom from about 2006 he's usually a recluse and a lurker among sites. He's been collecting video games since his 5th birthday, he never shows his real face online unless he has a good reason. In his early days he started off in IRC chat rooms and then discovered the work of Blue, Tombfyre, Drake Montanna and Dragomike through which he discovered a few more sites and so on until he found out about the fandom. In the beginning he was known as Seth.

These days he uses a number of characters most of which he prefers to be unknown as he likes to go around chat rooms unnoticed. He has about 6 known Characters known to date that he uses all for different purposes and usually of varying species. His main character Hydrassas is an anthropomorphic green dragon who is skilled in various forms of Magick. He has the ability to shift and split into multiple beings whether they be mere clones of him or completely different characters with their own minds and souls. He has a dark side named Smoke who will occasionally take over in chat rooms when he is upset sort of like an embodiment of his anger. When Hydrassas is threatened he'll either Shift, Split and run off in two or more different directions or raise the angles of his scales so they go from smooth to sharp in a similar fashion to a porcupine fish, although he doesn't inflate.
