Horsedreamer: /* Standalone clients */

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is the forebearer to modern chat and instant messenger services, created by Jarkko "WiZ" Oikarinen of the University of Oulu, Finland in 1988. IRC is a set of client-server protocols and software that allow users to connect to servers linked together in a network and then exchange messages with other users in chat rooms, called "channels" or with other users as private messages and exchange files through a protocol called DCC.

The two major furry IRC networks exist, Anthrochat and FurNet. Both differ slightly in their crowds and attitudes. Please see each network's article for more details. To connect to these networks, you must first download an IRC client, which sends and receives messages to an IRC server. A list of IRC clients is located below. Alternatively, some web interfaces exist to connect to IRC networks, including this online client to connect to the Anthrochat network through a web browser.

IRC clients
Standalone clients
These are clients that can just be directly downloaded and often installed with little trouble.

* BitchX (Linux/Unix, Cygwin, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X) -- Free to use, source code provided.
* Irssi (Linux/Unix, Cygwin, Mac OS X) -- Free to use: GPL'ed software.
* X-Chat (Linux/Unix, Windows)
** X-Chat is available under two licenses.
*** Linux users may continue to use official X-Chat for free by downloading it from the above linked site.
*** Windows users are faced with the shareware version or an old, free build of the official X-Chat client. The author of X-Chat states that building the client for Windows is "a difficult process", and is charging USD$20 to register.
**** Alternately, Windows users may download the GPL compliant, unofficial, but free and current version of X-Chat here at Silverex.org.
* KVIrc (Linux/Windows) -- Free to use: Modified GPL to allow linking to the non-commercial Qt libraries from TrollTech.
** The name "KVirc" comes from the days when the project was tied to the KDE project, and required KDE to run. Now it only requires the Qt library from TrollTech to be compiled.
* mIRC (Windows) -- Shareware, 30 day trial. USD$20.00 to register.
** mIRC is an extremely popular client for Windows users who want to connect to IRC.
** The client is easily extensible with mIRC Scripting and the usage of DLLs made for use with the client. Some of the most popular scripts/DLLs used with mIRC can double as an audio player, a video player, display your current song to a channel, or even tell your current system statistics.
** Its interface can be completely reskinned by skilled individuals, giving the client a completely different face, if desired.
* HydraIRC (Windows) Free to use. Not GPL'ed; Source may be acquired by following instructions on-site.
** HydraIRC is a relative newcomer, as far as clients go. It is a bit harder to configure than most clients, but is steadily improving.
* Colloquy (Mac OS X) -- Free to use: Appears to be GPL'ed software.
** Colloquy's IRC engine is based atop Irssi, and is very solid and stable.
** The client has a few interesting features that depend on the skins that are being used. One such feature is the inline loading of images when a link to one is posted in an IRC channel.
*** Instead of seeing, for example,<br /> <IRCUser> http://furry.wikia.com/images/6/6f/1000_Articles.png, you would see, <br /><IRCUser>
*** This feature may be considered useful in channels that link to images on various websites, provided that these sites are not configured to block hotlinking.
* Snak (Mac OS X) -- Shareware, 30 day trial. USD$25 to register.
* Ircle (Mac OS, including X) -- Shareware, 30 day trial. &#0128;19 (About USD$23) to register.

Alternative clients
These clients often have dependencies on other applications beyond the basic Operating System requirements.

* ChatZilla
** Unlike the rest of the aforementioned IRC clients, Chatzilla can run anywhere a compatible Mozilla family browser can run.
** Requires: Mozilla family browser, except K-Meleon. Compatible browsers include Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Camino, and the rebranded Netscape 7 series.
* Gaim (Linux, Windows) -- Free, GPL'ed application.
** Gaim was not initially built as an IRC client, but rather as an open source AOL Instant Messenger client. Later down the line, as the client was expanded, and even ported to Windows, it picked up basic IRC support.
** Requires: GTK+ 2.x series to be installed prior to intallation of Gaim, as its GUI is rendered from this. Recent releases have automatically installed GTK+ if it is not installed.

Furry IRC Servers
Furry Only irc servers.

* Furnet.org
**Furnet is a great furry server and has almost everything for everyone.

* AnthroChat.net
**Furry server.

* IRC.Furtopia.org
**A smaller furry server with relatively stricter rules, run by Furtopia.

Accuracy of the guide
It should be noted that the guide contains some factual inaccuracies and omissions. I recognize that the guide was created in 1996, but I think the article here should at least mention it, and maybe someone might be interested in creating an updated guide.
*HIV is not found in urine, but is found in breastmilk and pre-ejaculate.
*The interruption method is not very effective because HIV is found in pre-cum, and it's completely inapplicable to cunillingus.
*Using a condom or dental dam is the best way to increase the safety of oral sex.
*It should be noted that oral sores can be transmitted to the genitals and vice versa.
*Condoms can break or fall off even when used properly, though it is much less common.
*Don't flush condoms. Not a safe sex thing, but it can lead to interesting plumbing issues (I've seen them)
*nonoxynol-9 has fallen out of favor, and had little concrete evidence in support of HIV prevention
In general, the guide is very good, and it's certainly the best effort I've seen. I'm a peer educator on HIV/AIDS though, so these little things bug me.
:Oops, forgot to sign. Above is per --<font style="color:#585768;">horse</font><font style="color:#A7A897;">dreamer</font> 19:19, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Nonoxynol-9 is a detergent and causes inflammation in contacted tissue; as a result it actually -increases- the likelyhood of HIV infection.
:I believe it also breaks down latex, making a spermicidal condom less protective than a regular one. Spaz Kitty 04:02, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
::Well, less likely to be protective (from 80% vs sperm down to ???). -- Siege(talk) 08:29, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
:::I've not seen any studies showing it to break down latex, but the irritation does increase the risk of contracting an infection (of any kind) especially in sensitive individuals. Its effectiveness as a spermicide was never called into question, but it was my understanding that its spermicidal properties were not what was being promoted in the guide. In any case, there are more effective methods to augment condoms if birth control is a major concern (which for many it is not.) --<font style="color:#585768;">horse</font><font style="color:#A7A897;">dreamer</font> 16:46, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

To be most accurate, horses are also included as ungulates. The current wording seems to exclude them from that group. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ungulate.
