Otter Island is the creation of Oren Otter. Although it includes stories and art by other contributors, its main expression is through a combination of images and comic strips presented by Pandora Comics.

The Pre-history
The story of Otter Island begins with Oberon, King of the faeries. When the king became possessed of a wanderlust and desired to explore the multiverse, he had his people construct a system of inderdimensional gateways powered by the magic which flows from the higher dimensions. When Oberon came to our dimension, he found in uninteresting and continued on his way.

Oberon's gate continued to function long after his departure and the the magic which powered the gate soon suffused the island on which it had been placed. This island became a sort of mecca for all manner of wizards and sorcerers. At one point, the entire magical community set off on an expedition through the gate. They were never heard from again.

Many years passed and the island which had been suffused with magic was now saturated with it. This magic caused it to become a living entity. However, it also caused the mutation of eels living in the reef. The eels became were-eels and using their human forms, conquored the island. These creatures, the nageels, were savage and cruel. Filled with an intense loathing, the island used all of its energies to drive them back into the sea.

Then one day, a river otter who had become lost at sea washed ashore, barely clinging to life. The island took pity on the creature and nursed it back to health. That otter became a fast friend of the island, and was such a delight that the island began to call telepathically to other otters.

Otter Island, which has come to strongly resemble an otter itself, is home to many species of otter, including kushtaka, microlont, star otter and cookiesnitcher.

Enemies
On another plane of the multiverse lives a tree spirit named Nexicul. Once a harmless oaksidhe, Nexicul's tree bacame so large, its roots so deep, that it bagan to soak up the very energies of the biosphere. Soon it had subsumed the entire world and the inhabitants thereof had become zombies- puppets controlled by the creature who had absorbed their life force.

Nexicul has since gone on to spread himself through the multiverse.
His interest in Otter Island is simple. It lies between him and a world now devoid of magic, which offers him ideal laboratory conditions in which to test new magics and thus expand his power even more.

Other emenies include the murauding astruchin, the voracious tetranids and the greedy spiders from the low dimensions.

In response to these threats, Otter Island has joined an multi-dimensional alliance which includes a federation of elves, a world of androids, Rat City, Insectivore City and even a sentient restaurant.

Life on the Island
Otters who live on the island benefit in many ways. First, the ambient magic increases their intelligence, giving them the means to greatly enhance their own quality of life. It also allows them to instantly understand any language they see or hear.

Otters native to the island have their own language. This language is real and is reccomended for study by anyone wishing to build foreign language skill, as it is very simple, yet helps one to understand the mindset of a totally foreign people. (The Transformation Studies institute will soon be offering a course in Islandish.)

Otter Island is ruled by a king and queen who actually have very little to do with running things. The king deals with the outside world, making alliances and trade agreements, and serves as a military leader in wartime. The queen is in charge of the coastal patrol (a standing army consisting of one champion from each village) and insures that everyone has a means of contributing to society.

The economy of Otter Island can be described as an ideal communist society. There is no money. Everyone contributes to society in his or her own way and in exchange is permitted free access to all the goods and services which others offer. While this plan has always been disastrous in human societies, the non-materialistic nature of otters at their willingness to respect others' freedom makes it work.

There are ten villages on the island, each with unique characteristics and surrounding lands. They are the Kushtaka Village with it's hills of ice, Chanel Village with the sandbatr and forest, Fjord Village, with its cliffs and orchards, Marsh Village with its swamp, River village with its meadows and markets, Reef Village with its islands, Lagoon Village on the shore of the shallow lagoon, Lake Village with lake and castle, Fish Farm Village with its gardens and sports arena, And lastly, the Star Otter Aerie atop Mt. Sploosh.

Fun places to visit on the island include Mt. Sploosh, a natural indoor water park; the Hot springs, the art museum, the Maxwell Memorial, and of course, Oberon's Gate.

Prominent characters
Among the most prominent characters on Otter Island are...

Oren- the magician of transformation. He has no actual powers, but has made a thorough study of TF magic. Amanda the plushie lives here with her father, as does his apprentice, Frost.

Sam- The conjuror. Born a human with the magical talent of conjuring, Sam experimented with other types of magic. In a spectacular blunder, Sam permenantly turned himself into Oren's nearly identical twin. He is now married to a sea cat and has an adopted son named poof-poof.

Tak- the jovial fruit farmer. Tak loves fruit and could easily eat as much as he grown.

Blalok- The teacher. best friend of Tak.

Sayna- the athlete. Often seen hanging around with Tak and Blalok, she is the most physical of the bunch.

Zarro- Formerly a gardner, Zarro is now ambassador to at large.

Fgori- An alien of the kendru species, Fgori was unique among her people in that she actually likes otters. Now she lives among them.

Alinor- Kept for years as Fgori's pet until she discovered that he was actually a sentient person. Alinor is a navigator, but as a microlont, stands about three inches tall.

Cafe- The sentient restaurant. Cafe communicates by exchanging bits of matter which carry thoughts with them. He sometimes accompanies otters on their excursions by placing his personality into a bag of lozenges which interact with the otters by creating a mental projection.

Jarna- a young female river wolf who likes to sing... but doesn't do so very well.

Kahuna- a sea otter who doesn't quite understand the inhibitions river otters have concerning sex.

Pan- The aged ambassador to Cafe.

Magimals is a webcomic by Oren Otter and is distributed by Pandora Comics.

The basic theme of Magimals began as a spoof on Battling Monsters games such as Pokemon and Digimon. in fact, the original idea was to be a comic depicting Oren's adventures as he played Pokemon. Nintendo, naturally, was not very receptive of the idea, so Oren, working with his nephew Xan the armadillo, created their own battling monsters system, calling it "Magimals" for "iMAGInary aniMALS". The main character was named Taji Sato in honor of Pokemon's creator, Satoshi Tajiri.

The game and comic became so much fun that they soon became a serious system in their own right.

The Background
Magimals is set in a reality similar to that of Otter Island or Journey to the Bottom of the Multiverse. In it, the multiverse is divided into several parallel universes.

The story starts millenia ago, when powerful creatures called titans roamed the multiverse freely. Innocent at first, their territotial battles soon began to decimate entire worlds. This was a major annoyance to the faeries who were beginning their exploration of the multiverse. In response, Oberon, King of the Faeries had the titans rounded up and locked away in different dimensions in groups of twenty.

In one particular universe, the titans settled in out of necessity, and the world around them was soon permeated with the ambient energies which their cosmically charged bodies released. Many years later, humans arrived in this dimension and colonized it. The animals quickly began to mutate, aligning with the elemental energies of the titans. Plants often did the same, becoming animate beings. even rocks, artificial objects and pieces of trash began to eveolve into life forms.

Since then, the world has divided into four nations: Wunno, Tyuwo, Threen and the Foro Islands. Each has approximately 200 varieties of magimal, including 100 unique species, for a total of 500 different kinds.

Each magimal conforms to one of twenty different elemental types, these being earth, fire, air, water, metal, sonic, lightning, wood, chemical, crystal, dream, space, ancient, fairy, brute, plain, yin, yang, junk and plastic.

The Games
The magimals RPG consists of five modules, the first four based on the four nations and the fifth a secret yet to be released.* The card game allows players to battle one another using magimal cards they have collected, as well as special items, foods, techniques and characters from the comic.

*At the time this article is being written, the RPG modules 1-4 are not yet available to the public.

The Comic
Magimals season one follows Taji Sato and his faithful companion, Dolby the Tweeter as they travel around the land of Wunno attempting to collect research specemins for zoologist Ephraim Sycamore. During his travels, Taji faces off against the occultic group known as Team Gerbil, as well as more pleasant characters such as Helga the groomer, Harv the treasure Hunter, Fleas the species dysphoric and Jinki, who claims to be from a parallel dimension.

Animorphs was a book series (and, later, a televion show) created by Katherine Applegate. There were 65 books in all, including 54 'main universe' books, two alternate-universe books, four 'megamorphs' (double-sized books), four standalone novels, and one choose-your-own-adventure. In addition, there were Animorphs Transformers and video games.

In the series, the main enemy was the yeerk species, a sort of mind-controlling parasite. In order to fight the yeerks, a group of humans is given the gift of shapechanging by a dying andalite.

This gift is temporary -- the change can only last for two hours -- and it is possible to be trapped in a form (indeed, a main character, Tobias, is trapped in the first book). Additionally, the human will have to fight.

The six main characters are Jake (signature morph: tiger), Cassie (signature morph: wolf), Marco (signature morph: gorilla), Rachel (signature morph: elephant), Tobias (signature morph: red-tailed hawk), and Aximili (an andalite, a sort of psychic deer-scorpion taur).

The Changing Workplace is a webcomic created by Oren Otter. It is distributed by and was the former flagship comic of Pandora Comics. It is owned by Intense Comics.

Other credits
Currently penciling the Changing Workplace is Ann Vole. It is posted and maintained Caliroo Brownlee. Among those who have contributed in the past are inker Eala Dubh and colorist Kyle Roocoon.

The Premise
Oren Otter was one of the most prolific writers of the Transformation Story Archive. "I often saw the TSA as where I worked." says Oren. "I'd go in each morning and write a story, just as faithfully as if I were getting paid." This gave Oren the idea for his very first webcomic- one which would indeed portray the TSA as an office.

In the comic, Oren is looking for an exciting new job. He is intrigued by an office building where a taco runs out in the street shouting that the local genie
was responsible for his current condition (A common occurrence in the TSA chat chanels). In his interview with CEO Thomas Hassan, Oren is asked if he has any experience in transformation. Oren coincidentally undergoes a spontaneous transformation into a river otter and is hired immediately.

In his job, Oren is to fill out paperwork for other individuals and groups involved in transformation in order to simplify their lives. (Thus the name of the company, the "Transformation Simplification Agency") Among his clients are Circe, Sirius Black, the Animorphs, the Human Extinction Agency and many others. Other writers from the TSA are repesented as co-workers, including Aatheus Centauri, Light Otter, Sandfur and Eala Dubh.

Changes
Art mirrors life. When Oren the writer left the TSA over a matter involving some particularly nasty unsolicited critiques endorsed by Hassan himself, so Oren the character was dismissed from his TSA as well. Both real-life and character Oren found themselves becoming heavily involved in the furry community. Then, as real-life Oren discovered other webcomics and became actively involved in promoting them, so character Oren found himself sitting at a roadside stand selling said comics to passersby.

Eventually, a rival organization to the TSA formed. Three characters from transformation stories; Duster the Skunk from "The Square Pegs", Mi the Sprite from "Fuzzy Doom" and Dumb Blonde 6 from "Literalness" asked Oren to join them and lend his expertise to their organization.

Related comics
The Changing Workplace has inspired a number of spinoffs. The first of these was Knight Shift, in which oren's sister, Felice, works in the nursing home where Oren once held a temp job as a cook. The twist is that she is always surrounded by the characters from her fantasy stories.

A Roo'd Awakening by Wallaroo Black begins when the TCW character Deranged Kitsune accidentally transforms a large chunk of the world's population into anthropomorphic animals while trying to upgrade his satelite dish.

Amanda is hosted by Oren's daughter, a plush toy otter who sprang to life in the manner of Pinnochio. The cast also includes PJ from Tommy and PJ, Oren's nephew Xan the Armadillo and an assortment of Xan's plush toys.

Oren also appears in Transformation U. by E. Michelle Logan, a comic in which a human girl named Fiona trains for a career as a ferret.

In 2004, Oren made a bit of a career change and left The Changing Workplace. He left the comic to his daughter, nephew and numerous furry godchildren (by this time, three young men had made him their Furry Godparent) and made his way to St. Fred's Cathedral and Monastery to star in the webcomic Oren's Monastery.

Oren's monastery was perhaps the first webcomic to take an established comic star and icon of the furry community and place him in an overtly Christian setting. The response to this was tremendous. As Christian Furries wrote to show their support, a community began to form, which soon gave rise to the Christian Furry Fellowship, an online "church" of sorts of which Oren is now the pastor.

Despite this career change, Oren continues to appear in the newest season of The Changing Workplace as a freelance transformation expert.

The games
The magimals RPG consists of five modules, the first four based on the four nations and the fifth a secret yet to be released. The card game allows players to battle one another using magimal cards they have collected, as well as special items, foods, techniques and characters from the comic.

Wilma and Steve are two scientists who discover that the multiverse they live in is actually a series of parallel universes stacked along a 4th-dimensional axis, the bottom-most of which is a chaotic real with a funnel-shaped structire in the middle. They are joined on their journey by Chaos Otter, a fellow who has lived in the realm of chaos most of his life.
