A transgender, or just trans (circa 1960s), is a person with a gender identity that does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.

Overview
A transgender individual can identify as a man, woman, nonbinary, or any other gender identities. Many transgender people experience gender dysphoria, characterised by stress arising from the incongruence between their assigned sex and their expressed gender. To combat dysphoria, many but not all transgender people may undergo the process of transitioning, which involves changes in appearance and presentation which may be aided by medical procedures.. Barriers that might impede or stop a person from undergoing transition exist, as do personal preferences and beliefs.cn Gender-affirming care can include such methods as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), surgery, psychological counselling, and others.

Transgender and gender non-conforming identities are distinct from sexual orientation, and trans people may be of any orientation. Crossdressing is an activity that can be performed, regardless of gender identity; however, not everyone who does it identifies as transgender. Moreover, transgender and gender non-conforming identities are not inherently linked with drag culture and performance.

Other terminolgy
* Cisgender (created 1994), often shortened to cis, rarely cissexual, is the antonym of "transgender", and it describes people whose gender identity matches their assigned sex.
* Transsexual (circa 1940s/50s), is an archaic term for someone who identifies as trans, and the term may be considered inflammatory if used today.
* Other terms that gave fallen off favor include transvestite (1910s), hermaphrodite (an inaccurate descriptor), he-she, and the (now fully derogatory terms) shemale/she-male (mid-19th century) and tranny (1980s).
* Travesti is a term in Latin America still in use to correctly identify transgender people. It was also in use in Spain during the Franco era before being replaced with "transgender" in modern times.
:In France, "travesti" is a term coming to mean a cross-dresser, drag artist, or female impersonator, or someone disguised or a costume (or the costume itself) for a themed party (bal travesti).
:In theather, travesti is a theatrical character in an opera, play, or ballet performed by a performer of the opposite sex.

Transgenderism and furry
Transgender people exist within all fandoms and subcultures, including the furry community.

Using a fursona of the same desired gender may allow transgender individuals to express their identity. Additionally, virtual reality (VR) environments such as VRChat or Facebook's Metaverse can be used to explore gender identity and self-expression using avatars..

Some furry artists used to use the term shemale, not out of malice, but because they were raised during an era where it was still acceptable. an example was furry artist Doug Winger♰. Some artists use the term sheepmale to identify transgender sheep characters (also created in an older era), such as furry artists Steve Martin and Bob Hill♰, and Taral Wayne♰.

Stereotyping
Transgender or gender non-conforming identities are often stereotypically linked with the furry community in popular culture and Internet circles.cn Somewho consider this association as derogatory, transphobic or hateful.
