A fursona (pl. fursonas, sometimes furson) refers to a character or identity assumed by a person or player normally associated with the furry fandom. It is a furspeech portmanteau derived from the terms furry and persona.

The fursona itself consists of a name (usually fictitious) and a species, as well as any distinctive colors, markings or body features. An artist's typical commission is a rendition of a fursona.

Conceptual origin
The origins of the fursona concept within the eventual furry fandom are difficult to pin down to specific dates, and it is not known if similar concepts of personal fictional alter-egos exists outside of the furry fandom. What can be said is that the growing clout of roleplaying gaming (including live-action, tabletop, computer multi-player, etc.) in Western society in the 1970s and 1980s induced the adoption or self-creation of highly-stylized, often genre-specific alter-egos for RP purposes among specific audiences. As the first large furry parties took place at large science-fiction or multi-genre speculative fiction conventions, such venues often served as meeting places for both RPers and costumers as well as artists and writers, the latter two of whom had often honed their skills in the funny animal art scene's APAs. Thus, when RPers and costumers happened upon the Art Show exhibits for "funny" animal artists, the latter were soon in demand from RPers and costumers for commissioned renditions of their RP or costume characters. As the customers were often not writers or artists but had envisioned these characters as being more than just under their ownership, detailed specifics for such characters (see "Elements") were often provided by the customers so as to give as much narrative-independent life to such characters as possible.

As a result, when the first furry parties were held, the first costumers and RPers of what would become the furry fandom had already developed the awareness of their favorite RP or costume characters' artistically-rendered exteriors, what they acted like, and in what they were interested or disinterested. Such characters often did not need to be written into written narratives, but were instead buoyed by being a general-purpose alter-ego for the RPer or costumer. This difference from the traditional idea of the character as being driven by stories of fiction allowed for the "favorite character" or "custom-made character" to be shifted to the "alter-ego", "alternative persona" or "fursona".

Elements of a Fursona
Depending on the level of personal identification the description of a fursona typically consists of the following elements:

Many fursonas are based on 'typical' animal species, such as cats and wolves, but are often only limited by the imaginations of their player, and can include more extraordinary types of creatures such as aliens, angels, demons, vampires, and mythological creatures (a popular offshoot of mythological creatures is to have a hexapedal, taur-based fursona). Hybrid fursonas are also popular; furries who like characteristics of more than one animal will combine them into one creature, such as a cat/fox or wolf/raccoon cross. Some give these hybrids portmanteau names, such as "drynx" for a dragon/lynx, or "hedgefox" for a hedgehog/fox.

Appearance
A visual, kinesthetic, or textual realization of the player's mental impression of their fursona. The most common form of realization being an illustration or textual description which may be described by the term furry art.

Attire
Since many fursonas have complex fur patterns or other interesting anatomical details, not all fursonas are necessarily clothed or always illustrated with clothing on. As such, there will often be several details about the appearance of a fursona; first, its physical body, and secondly, whatever clothes and accessories are worn over such a body.

Behavior
Depending on personal preference the behavior of a fursona can range from that of a typical human being zoomorphic only in appearance to behavior which is identical to that of the animal represented by the fursona. These general behaviors usually form a framework inside of which a player may mold their character's behavior to their liking. As fursonas are typically a furry representation of the player the fursona often inherits many of the player's character traits.

Fursona history
Fursonas are often used to roleplay or in other story-based mediums, and as such, often have some sort of history, whether it is merely the history of the player behind the fursona, a backstory within a world of another person's design, or a story within a world of the person's own design.

Levels of personal identification
An individual may identify with a particular character in a variety of ways and with varying degrees of closeness.

Avatar
An avatar is typically a character created by a player as an alias. Typically this alias is used by the player as a trademark or symbol of their role playing identity. Hence, players typically do not associate themselves with their avatar outside of that specific realm of experience. A single player typically has many avatars; however, some players may prefer one character over others.

Personal furry
A personal furry is a fursona that a person or player identifies with on an intimate level.

Personal Furry vs. Avatar
The description of a personal furry typically possesses all the hallmarks of a complete fictional character. This may include the physical description of a furry, the character's beliefs, moods, and temperaments, and all stories that support and expand the understanding of the furry character. Drawings of the character are very common, and personal furries are often used online to role-play with other characters, sometimes with the aid of an avatar.

While a person may play several characters and have several fursonas, the personal furry often has greater significance — it will often be a better representation of the person's "real" personality, if only because they tend to use it more often. Many individuals with a personal furry will primarily use that character to represent themselves online and within the fandom, and may actually go by that character's name as their primary nickname or handle, both on and even offline.

Fursona as Metaphor
A personal furry often reflects elements of their player's real-life appearance or dress, or what they would like to wear. Also, there may be clues within the personal furry as to how that player sees themselves; to have a cat furry may symbolize a thirst for independence, and likewise a fox furry may symbolize perceived wit. Coat/Scale/Feather coloring may also represent the personality of a person; for example a pink coat may represent girlish behavior.

Relationship to other furry concepts/practices
While a personal furry is often seen as a natural fit for lifestylers, it's important to note that ideas such as the furry lifestyle and animal totemism are not intrinsically linked to the concept.

It is generally considered to be bad taste for others to depict a personal furry (and to a lesser extent, any character) participating in activities (such as Yiffing) that they or their player would not normally be involved in.

Fursonas are an integral part of the furry fandom; many people within the fandom have a fursona, and demand for artwork of these people's fursonas (along with conbadges, fursuits, and other commissions) is a driving force within the furry art market, providing a near-limitless array of characters for artists to draw, and likewise, providing an endless source of paraphernalia for more exuberant fans to demand, as possibilities are only limited by the offerings of artists and the wallet of the fan in question.

A fursona (pl. fursonas, sometimes furson), refers to a character or identity assumed by a person or player normally associated with the furry fandom. It is a furspeech portmanteau derived from the terms furry and persona.

Megaplex is a furry convention first held in March 2002 as Pawpet Megaplex. The next edition, Megaplex 8, will be held 24-26 July, 2009 in Kissimmee, Florida, marking a return to the greater Orlando metropolitan area.

Megaplex's stated goal is to provide "a celebration of interactive arts and performance, with a primary focus on anthropomorphics and fantasy". Programming has focused on fursuiting, puppetry, improvisation, and other types of performance, including musical performances by Toxic Audio in 2003 and 2004, 4:2:Five in 2006, and Matthew Ebel in 2008. In 2005, the convention hosted the Potpourri of Puppets, a puppetry event held in the Orlando area.

Attendance peaked at 387 in 2005, but declined to 185 by 2007. Reasons for this include unpopular track scheduling in 2005, a disappointing hotel experience in 2006, and a forced move to Jacksonville, Florida compounded by a schedule conflict with Furry Weekend Atlanta in 2007. The convention rebounded in 2008 with an attendance of 255.
History
Megaplex
Pawpet Megaplex (8-10 March 2002, 126 attending) came into being as a replacement for Furry Spring Break, which was held in 2001. FSB was unable to secure hotel space for a second convention in 2002, and folded. In its stead, Pawpet Live Experiences, Inc. was formed and held the first Pawpet Megaplex at the Ramada Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

Pawpet Megaplex 2 (21-23 March 2003, 197 attending) moved to the movie-themed Sheraton Studio City Resort, closer to Universal Studios Florida. The convention had its first guest of honour, Susan Rankin. This was also the first year Toxic Audio appeared.

Megaplex 3 (19-21 March 2004, 357 attending) returned to the Sheraton Studio City, with guest of honour Trace Beaulieu, of MST3K fame (Dr. Clayton Forrester, Crow T. Robot). The convention's theme played heavily on the fact the name of the con could be abbreviated to "MP3"; this was seen in promotional materials, as well as on-site artwork and the con book. The convention officially dropped the "Pawpet" from the name this year; however, the official web site remained ppmp.info.

Megaplex 4 (11-16 March 2005, 387 attending) moved into larger quarters at the Sheraton World Resort, right next door to the SeaWorld Orlando theme park. The guest of honour was professional puppeteer John Kennedy. As part of the convention, Orlando's Potpourri of Puppets was hosted on Sunday night. The convention's theme, taking into account the move and the fact Interstate 4 goes through Orlando, was a "road trip".

Megaplex 5 (17-19 March 2006, 257 attending) was held at the Sheraton World Resort. The fifth anniversary con's theme saluted the B-movies of days gone by, lending MP5 the subtitle of "...The Horror!". Unfortunately, part of the horror was the hotel, which staff and attendees alike had troubles with. Brian Reynolds attended as a guest of honour with his wife, Tracy.

Megaplex 6 (2-4 March 2007, 185 attending) was held at the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverfront. The primary reason for the move to Jacksonville was cost - hotels in Orlando and Tampa wanted two to three times what Megaplex had paid for space in the past, whereas the Wyndham's offer was more in line with past costs. The convention had a game show theme, and its guest of honour was Mike Kazaleh.

Megaplex 7 (28-30 March 2008, 255 attending) returned to the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverfront. The theme (announced at Megaplex 6's closing ceremonies) was comics, with heroes and villains battling it out in the form of convention mascot MegaPanther, and his arch foe, Baron Von Redtail. Adam Wan was the guest of honour, and the special musical guest was Matthew Ebel, who also participated in the live Rocky Horror event performing as Frank N Furter.

Megaplex 8 (24-26 July, 2009, 425 attending) marked a move away from their traditional March timeframe (and, in turn, allowing FWA to move into March). The convention also returned to Central Florida, at the Radisson Worldgate Resort Orlando, located in nearby Kissimmee, FL, and a short distance from Walt Disney World's main gate. The convention had a "Toyland" theme, with a "Christmas in July" sub-theme, and the guest of honour was BigBlueFox.

Rating
From its origin as a "funny animal convention" promising "good clean fun" -- which has been acknowledged as a PR blunder by the convention -- Megaplex has had a somewhat prudish reputation. This has been reinforced by its PG-13 rating, which historically extended to both sales and events (with the exception of the Rocky Horror Picture Show since 2006).

In 2007, con chair Carl Fox noted that, at the time, the convention staff felt that Megaplex's event rating was appropriate to the convention's location and audience, and was equivalent to Anthrocon's in most areas.

However, for Megaplex 7 (2008), the convention adopted similar dealer's room rules as FWA's, allowing mature work as long as it is not displayed openly. Also, some of the performances late on Friday and Saturday nights contained more mature language and material (Rocky Horror amongst them), marking a shift away from the strict rating on events.

(PLEx) is a class C for-profit corporation operating out of the State of Florida.. PLEx, Inc. was incorporated in January 2002, a mere two months before putting on Pawpet Megaplex 1, and went the faster route of incorporating under the less stringent for-profit statutes. The Board of Directors runs the convention on a not-for-profit basis, and intends to eventually update their incorporation to officially reflect this.

Megaplex's Board of Directors is currently chaired by Randy "Yappy" Fox, who also acts as Hotel Liaison and Registration and Communications lead. The convention's original Chairman, Karl F. "Carl Fox" Meyers, stepped down after Megaplex 7, but remains a member of the Board.

Other Board members are:
