Human beings are one of the members of the family Hominidae, which also includes chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas. They are the only existent member of the genus Homo.

Numbering somewhat more than seven billion, they are a ubiquitous species on the planet Earth. They are distinct from other primates in that they are bipedal, possess syntactic language, and make use of technology to modify the world around them.

Humans and furry
In furry worlds
<!-- this subsection could benefit from additional information -->
Human beings are fairly common in stories (art, literature, film, etc) depicting anthropomorphic characters (furry media). In many, perhaps particularly in children's movies, they cohabit with anthropomorphic characters and may or may not be aware of their presence or their intelligence. Indeed, recognition of this--and subsequent relationship between humans and furry elements--may be a plot point. In others, it is scarcely addressed.

Where the two are present concurrently and aware of the other, the relationship between them may be friendly or antagonistic. In some cases, there seems to be little inherent problem; the universe of Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" acting as a prime illustration. In others, for example Larry Niven's Ringworld, conflicts exist but are not bred from anything in the 'difference' between man and 'the other.'

In others, however, the existence of this difference itself is a key motivation for antagonism, this Kind of Racism is called Fantastic Racism. In some instances this is presented as an analogue of the Civil Rights movement, generally with the furry characters acting out the role of the oppressed minority. Personal relationships across species lines can be depicted as stigmatized, recalling beliefs about miscegenation.

In most stories, humans are, or are seen as, the oppressors. Humanity definitely will show characteristics of Xenophobia, a fear of different life forms, to one degree or another. In these stories or scenarios, humans are highly aggressive, preferring to destroy what they do not understand, or is different from them, than to use diplomatic or other peaceful means of resolving problems. Many, if not all, humans will seek to take advantage of everything and everyone. However this does not only apply to furry stories, but to most stories were there are characters which are not human, like District 9 and James Cameron's Avatar. If a story takes the point of view of animals, or relatively weak or primitive non-humans, then humans are often seen as the perpetrators, antagonists, or simply, "savages".

However, some stories featuring furry and human characters have furry characters playing the role of antagonist. In Planet of the Apes, most of the furry characters, who are intelligent apes, are antagonists and oppress the wild humans they capture.

When humans also have ill intent for each other, or are generally just bad people, it is a sad state of living. Note that in some stories where there is a species superior to humans, this species might be physically stronger, more intelligent, of purer intent, and may also be able to transform, and/or mutate, humans into other species, or use hypnosis or mind control, which can lead to the human targeted to lose control of their actions and logic. This can be the cause of the humans becoming the oppressors in the first place and also raise questions about how the humans could defeat or enslave an most powerfull race. However the superior race can also became a Mary Suetopia. It seems they're not above arrogance, though they or the author usually feel the need to rub their superiority in the face of the humans or the reader.

In some instances, the very existence of anthropomorphic characters is credited to human beings, as in Clifford Simak's City or a number of less well-known pieces of literature. There is a good motive for this kind of story, since humans are already inserting human DNA into animals, and even making they create human organs, this also include DNA of the human brain. Its really possible that humans will be able to create anthros in the future. In his kind of fiction, this very fact may enter into the details of the dynamic between the two, recalling to some degree the fascination of science fiction with robotics and artificial intelligence.

Of course, a number of stories lack humans entirely. Occasionally an explanation is presented for this that acknowledges the once or current existence of human beings, though more frequently the rules of the universe simply replace them outright with furry counterparts. This, as well, is a comparatively common setup in anthropomorphic literature and artwork; perhaps the dominant archetype.

In real life
<!-- this subsection could benefit from additional information -->
While all members of the furry fandom claim to not be human, they are. It's pretty obvious, but with most furries, they assume that they are actually a fox or a wolf. Studies show that people on the autism spectrum tend to think that they have super powers, in this case it is that they think they're animals. Most furries are physically scrawny, or morbidly obese.

Furthermore, and somewhat intriguingly, the separation between furry and non-furry mentioned in the previous section--if not truly antagonistic--may not confine itself entirely to the world of art and the imagination. Online role-playing program No Life supports a furry community that, according to an article in the Austin 360, practices a degree of self-imposed segregation between itself and 'human' role-players.

For some there may also be a mental difference rather than an anatomical one, which, in some people's opinion, represents the difference between one
sentient species and another. For them, it's a matter of mental texture in a thinking species that sets subspecies of human from one another, despite the physical similarities.
Wolves are defined as any of several large carnivorous mammals of the genus Canis, of the dog family Canidae. Wolves are one of the most popular species for fursonas.

Historical views
In ancient Rome, wolves were considered symbols of sexual potency as well as good mothers, the latter easily noticeable in the Roman foundation myth of Romulus and Remus, where the twins were raised by a she-wolf. Native Americans revere the Wolf Totem in a different light, seeing wolves as Pathfinders and Guardians. This flies in contrast to the place of the wolf in most western history, wolves having been primarily seen as creatures to be feared, a viewpoint even noted in religious texts such as the Bible: "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

Modern perspective
Though the connotations associated with the wolf from ages past still lingers, the view of the wolf today is constantly evolving. Everything from scientific research and readily available documentaries to books and films has done much to alter the public view of these creatures, one notable such example being the film Never Cry Wolf. As the wild ancestors of domestic dogs, wolves are both familiar and exotic to humans, which might explain their continuing fascination. Wolves have almost become cliches in some types of modern historical and fantasy fiction, shown as noble, savage, or a mixture of both qualities. The Wolves of Time duology included wolf characters from nobly self-sacrificing through to unrepentantly evil. In the furry fandom, a mix of both elements is seen: admiration and distrust.
RainRat, aka bogglerat on LiveJournal or just Rat, (born November 20, 1978) is a male furry who lives in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He has a slight preference for RainRat rather than Rain Rat.

Personal information and history
He has been to Conifur, Howloween, Further Confusion, Anthrocon 2004, 2007 (as SuperSponsor), and 2009, Califur 2 and 3, 2007, 2008, and 2009, Midwest FurFest 2007, and All Fur Fun 2009. He has been on staff for Howloween. His first performance in a convention masquerade was a skit with five other fursuiters at Anthrocon 2007 about an armistice between rats and ferrets in an alternate World War II. His second performance was at RainFurrest 2007 where he sang Yakko's World live, while pointing to the countries at the same time, while wearing an open-face Yakko costume. His third was a Pirates vs Ninjas skit at Further Confusion 2008 with several other fursuiters.

RainRat found the furry community late-October 2002. He didn't have a fur name at first, but soon went by rat (lowercase, because it was more a description than an actual name). When he got LiveJournal, he chose the name bogglerat because even though he doesn't consider his skill at Boggle to be all that exceptional, some furries nicknamed him that after watching him play. It's not his typical name in spoken conversation though. On his way back from Further Confusion 2004, he was pondering a new name, because "rat" wasn't very distinctive at a big con like that. He was considering SnowRat, but the weather being how it is where he lives in Burnaby, it was raining, not snowing, so RainRat struck him as a much more appropriate name.

The interest in rats comes from the fact that he had pet rats even before he found the furry community, and he found them to be very social and interesting animals. In total, he has had eight pet rats (not all at the same time though).

On December 8, 2006, RainRat received his Canadian ham radio license, after tutoring from Trapa. His interest in the radio exam is more a matter of the intellectual challenge than a need to do anything with the radios.

Two LiveJournal communities, rodentfurs and vanfurs have also been started and maintained by him. He also almost-always hosts the vanfurs Game Night at his home. His place has also been the location for the vfur furmeet a few times. In March 2009 he was made one of the moderators of vfur. He started the BC Furry Community Board in March 2009, with help from Frysco and Rino.

RainRat often contributes to WikiFur and was promoted to administrator October 25, 2005. RainRat has released thousands of his images under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 or other free license. He also runs a bounty to encourage other artists to do the same. He also has contributed over 100 dollars Canadian to help the EFF, because of their defense of fair use and free expression online.
One pastime that RainRat really enjoys is Pokemon Puzzle League. Despite the name, it is a puzzle game that really has nothing to do with Pokemon. Other games have caught his interest over the years, like Nethack or Star Control II.

RainRat is on Second Life under the name Rat Rieko, where his preferred avatar is a Ninja Weasel Studios brown rat.

Comics
RainRat is trying to learn how to draw. His biggest project is a comic, tentatively titled One. The art quality is limited by RainRat's skill, but he has released the comic under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 or earlier license so that others can build on it as long as they abide by the terms of the license. The entire comic so far can be viewed at RainRat's gallery.

RainRat's first furry wear acquired was a set of rat ears and rat tail made by Jimfoxyboy; then he learned how to make the rest of the rat fursuit from Trapa.

He has made several fleece character hats for himself and friends (as gifts; only once out of the five gift hats did he even ask for help buying materials).

RainRat also made part of Qumick's fursuit.

RainRat has eight fursuits.

The head was won in an auction on FurBid on March 24, 2004, and RainRat commissioned WhiteyFawks to make the rest of the body after winning the head.
<div style="clear:both"></div>

Rattie is a brown and white rat.

RainRat built the body, paws, and first version head and second version tail with some help from Trapa. Jimfoxyboy built the first tail. The first version suit was finished just in time for Anthrocon 2004. The second version head was built by Whiteyfawks.

Owners are known as fursuiters, furzooters, or suiter/zooters, while the act of wearing a fursuit is usually referred to as fursuiting (originally as zooting, named after the Chicano zoot suiters of the Los Angeles area of the 1940s).

History
Fursuiting as a permanent feature and practice within the fandom likely dates to the pre-convention era (1984-1989),cn when the first furry parties were being organized at both sci-fi conventions and home parties. By Confurence 0 in 1989 (the first hotel-based furry convention), a programming track called "Furry Costuming" was held at the hotel at which it took place.cn

Many have commented on the change which occurred in the growing fandom when graphic artists, many of whom were native to the funny animal fandom era, clarify shared more attention with costumers, clarify resulting in the artists' booths being overshadowed by the presence of costumers at conventions and furry parties

Event entertainment
[[File:FursuitDancersAC2006.jpg|right|thumb|300px|Fursuit dancers at Anthrocon 2006 — video by BBF: <span class="plainlinks">1 2 3</span> ]]
Other furries enjoy wearing their suits for parades, exhibitions, or conventions for simple personal fun or crowd entertainment. These fursuiters may also wear their suits to small, informal meetings among furry fans in their area.

Some may get permission to perform in or outside of a shop or event, while others may simply wear a suit in a major area, such as a mall. However, some cities have no-mask laws, so individuals seeking to wear their fursuit in large, public places should check first if it's allowed before performing at that location.

Role-playing
Some Role-players create highly elaborate costumes (including fursuits) for their characters. Half-suits are usually created for role-playing games, though some role-players use full-body suits. These suits wear elaborate clothes and costumes of their own, depending on the theme of the game. Most people watch these people in pity, wondering how low they can fall after their years in High-School end

Spirituality
Some people (usually otherkin, therianthropes or furry lifestylers) also fursuit for reasons of expressing what they feel is their inner animal self.cn Most of them try to make their suits as realistic and lifelike as possible.

Sexuality
A small portion of the furry fandom considers a fursuit a sexual item. Some suits may contain elaborately designed/recreated sexual features (sexual organs), while some wearers have simple cut accesses on the suit. It is a perceived stereotype in and out the fandom that fursuit sex is practiced by all fursuiters.

Pornography and furry
Within the furry fandom, most explicit artistic or written depictions of sexual acts are considered "furry pornography".whofact Images or descriptions of a single or groups of furry/anthropomorphic characters not explicitly engaging in sex acts but prominently displaying sexual organs (especially in a state of arousal) are also often considered porn.whofact

Pornography featuring furry characters may be called furry porn, furry adult art, and/or yiff art. Another common term is Furotica, a portmanteau furspeech term of the words furry and erotica.

A wide variety of free online furry art and writing archives offer the option to upload and display pornographic art and stories to the public, such as Fur Affinity, Inkbunny, SoFurry, Weasyl, VCL. Most furry pay-sites are exclusively catered to such media.

Some image board, such as U-18Chan, Fchan and PlayMouse, are specifically intended for the showcasing of "furry porn."

Propagation
Often, members of the fandom and critics alike speculate that adult content makes up the majority of the fandom.cn The opposite point of view, voiced particularly in the 2 Sense shows, claims that this is caused by the cognitive bias: since pornography is not tabooed in the furry community, its relative percentage may be even smaller than in the mundane world, but the fact that it gets more exposure makes it appear to be a larger chunk.fact

No scientifically credible estimates of the exact ratio of pornographic content to family friendly content in the furry community exist to date. A rough estimate from conventions which allow adult content in such activities as art shows and charity auctions and auction sites such as FurBid-SF suggest a proportion of 25-40%, with a higher proportion of mature publications and 2D artwork than sculpture and other constructed art.fact

Fur Affinity, arguably the largest furry art site, published monthly statistics up until 2009 (FA LiveJournal) which consistently showed clean artwork outnumbered pornographic artwork by orders of magnitude.cn

Legality
There are no mainstream laws which specifically reference pornography containing anthropomorphic characters at this time, be it characters of adult or minor (cub) age. Furry websites, forums, groups and publications may enact them independently within the fandom. It is highly speculated that having sexual intercourse with a fox can be considered "Beastiality".

Sexuality and content
Orientation
Furry pornography is often stereotyped as homosexual in nature.fact This is not always the case, though the percentage of bisexual or homosexual furries appears to be higher than that in the general population.fact A detailed survey by Tevildo of postings to the fur.artwork.erotica newsgroup between April and December 2001 revealed 45.6% of pictures to be "gay" themed and 48.9% to be "straight" (heterosexual) themed.

Species
Furry pornography commonly depicts species popular among the furry fandom, as many furry porn artists enjoy depicting their own personal fursonas in sexual activity, fact either with a fantasy mate or the fursona of a person to whom they are attracted in real life. Some pornographic artists draw generic characters as well, though these are usually species chosen for their sexual characteristics or stereotyped promiscuity, such as foxes, wolves, and horses.clarifyfact

Subject
Fetish imagery catering to various paraphilias seems to appearclarify with significant frequency in furry porn. BDSM, vore, pregnancy fetish, costume play, infantilism, inflation, rape fantasy, and other fetishes are often depicted in furry pornography, with most of the characters engaging in these fetishes are being invariably anthropomorphic animals.

Transformation, in which humans turn into animals or furries transform into a different type of furry, is also popular in furry porn and regular furry art alike. Mental control or transformation permanence may be established through orgasm.

Most of these fetishes are not specific to the furry fandom, but merely furry expressions of them. While fetish porn is frequently attested to be unusually common in furry fandom — one of the complaints of the former critic Burned Furs was its perceived popularityClarifyfact — it is, again, impossible to obtain a precise percentage of fetish pornography compared to other forms of furry pornography.

Mainstream views
Furry erotica is not thought well of by some outside the fandom itself. In The Geek Hierarchy, Erotic Furries (sic) are ranked just below Furries as a whole, and just above "Star Trek fanfic, written as furry erotica, with Kirk as an ocelot (or something), and the author being the star and his own personal furry as well."cn
A furry lifestyler is one who lives a furry lifestyle, to put it simply. However, like most things in the furry community, the term Lifestyler tends to have different meanings depending on who you ask, and the context. It varies in the amount of devotion to the subculture, but usually it is exclusive to the more extreme cases.

The furry lifestyle, lived by those who call themselves lifestylers involves a more pronounced expression of what the Furry Fandom means to them in real life through their actions and beliefs. Lifestylers tend to identify more strongly than typical furries with their furry avatars, and often act out animalistic behaviors of them. For example, a wolf furry lifestyler might go out barefoot to howl at the moon, and an otter lifestyler might spend much of the day swimming. Often this is coupled with a strong belief in an animal totem, and many lifestylers feel their avatar's spirit selected them instead of them selecting their avatar of choice. Fursuiting and other costuming are popular with lifestylers, as are verbalizations such as "Murr" and "Meef" that express their furriness.

Furry lifestylers have a few distinct subgroups, such as the barepaws and the old TLKIAWOLers (A Lion King oriented version of FIAWOL or Fandom Is A Way Of Life).

While a select few weres or therians may also live a furry lifestyle, this is extremely rare. In fact many tend to ignore or look down upon lifestylers and even the furry subculture as a whole.

Definitions
*The broadest, simplest and shortest definition of this word was put forth by Renard Foxx and states simply that "A lifestyler is any person for whom furry extends beyond a simple interest and affects their daily life."
* To some, this term has a decidedly negative connotation and is used to refer to those within the community who flaunt and publicly display their furry tendencies in every social situation, those who are unable to distinguish between the situations which are appropriate or not for furry behaviour and those who try to impose furriness on others.
* To others, the definition of "furry as a way of life" is more accurate. For these furs, furriness is not something that you do, it is something that you are, an inseparable part of oneself. It may be a part of their spirituality. This is distinct from the notion of being a furry fan, who, by contrast, can choose to 'not be furry' at times.

* The term is also used to describe those who choose to participate in furry activities, yet are perceived as not being truly furry (a highly subjective evaluation). This viewpoint is most often expressed by those who have been in the fandom for longer periods of time when talking about newcomers, especially those who try to rapidly immerse themselves into the fandom.fact

Yiff
This tends to remain a constant whether you are a lifestyler or not. Many Furries tend to see yiff as a sexual activity. Furry lifestylers generally tend to choose likeminded people as their mate. One who chooses being a furry as a lifestyle would most likely have a problem choosing someone outside the fandom as their mate.
Unreferenced-section
A person may choose to identify as a furry fan instead of a furry for various reasons, including:

*The person is a newcomer and isn't ready for deeper immersion into the community.
*The person's main interest lies in stories and art with furry characters, not in the fan community surrounding these works.
*The person's main interest is in talking animals, beast races, animal fiction or some other sub-genre perceived as distinct from furry.
*The person considers his/her interest to be significantly less intense than that of people who identify as furries.
*A desire to avoid negative stereotypes.

A respect for the English language: as 'furry' is an adjective, and its appropriation as a noun already applies to anthropomorphic fictional characters, using it to refer to humans who are fans of these characters is a source of confusion and unnecessary ambiguity.clarify

In 1998, the non-scientific survey The Sociology of Furry Fandom by David J. Rust, indicated that male (fans and artists) were the majority within the furry fandom; A survey of 350 furries found that males comprised 85% of the community, as compared to a 2005 U.S. Census report of 49% in the U.S. as a whole <ref>The Sociology of Furry Fandom by [[David J.

:"Artist" redirects here. For the character by that name, see Footman.
A furry artist, or anthro artist, is a person who creates artistic works with the furry fandom in mind as the target audience, or who creates anthropomorphic art of interest to the fandom. The works of such artists is called furry art.

Etymology‎
"Furry artist" is used mostly to identify those who create art such drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, and other types of works traditionally thought of as visual/physical media. Those who write furry fiction are usually referred as furry writers.

Performance furry artists are also subject to their own designation, such as fursuiters, puppeteers, furry musicians, etc,... Alternately, some artists of a certain art subset (e.g. Comics), may append the term "furry" to their craft to further identify themselves on that particular field (e.g. furry cartoonist).

Anthro artists
Some furry artists also describe themselves as "anthro artists", but not all "anthro artists" identify themselves as "furry". For some, the connotation "furry" feels that brings a baggage, normally not flattery, with the term, or in some cases, may wish to identify themselves as artists who draw furry content without a direct connection to the fandom.

Other definitions
Some artists that work for/with the fandom, but are not/do not wish to be part of it may use the simple term artist.

Of less use is the term Funny animal artist, a older predecessor term to describe a "furry artist", but most common, to describe those anthro artists, or even non-fur ones, not comfortable, again, with the perceived "furry" negative word impact.

Social interactions
Most furry artists have an active connection to the furry fandom. Many attend furry conventions and furmeets (and/or specialized artist furmeets), furry MUCKs, Internet forums, IRC chatrooms, Social media, and any other sites and events connected to the community.

However, a small portion of furry artists have little or no involvement in furry fandom. They may avoid fan social activities out of lack of interest, discomfort with the public reputation of the fandom, dislike of the furry social community, and/or other personal reasons. This lack of personal involvement does not necessarily prevent such artists from selling their artwork to furries.

Typically, a furry artist utilizes these avenues not only as social tools, but also as a means of advertising and merchandising his/her/their work.

Economics
While some furry artists are able to make a living from their furry artwork, most do not. In general commissions, prints, and other art sales make a significant income only for very popular and well-known furry artists. Artists with a smaller fanbase may make a small amount of money from their furry art; this is predominantly through commissions (rather than prints or original non-custom works).

A large majority of furry artists create their artwork for the enjoyment of the subject matter. They may share them on online art galleries without any expectation of sales.

Blacklisting
