Many are artists, and others participate in multiplayer worlds.

In recent years, the amount of females in the fandom have increased but not to a significant degree as of yet. It is still a truism in places like FurryMUCK that "the guys are guys, and the girls are, too." - not entirely true, but close to it.
---------

Despite the males outnumbering the females, there is still a certain degree of competition and angst among the females. As in any fandom, to a certain degree, there are people who feel the need to top the totem pole of their gender.

----
It's also a truism that genuinely female players find that they get a lot of unwanted attention from male players who have a tendency to believe that they may be in with a chance of getting RL sex or a relationship from female players.

Brian Root, or as he is known to the internet, rootdown, is an Internet Celebrity. He lives and attends university in Monterey, California, pursuing a degree in 3d animation. His screen name is taken from a track of the same name by the popular hip-hop group, the Beastie Boys. He enjoys some modest notoriety among the furry community for his penchant for baiting, sarcasm, and pranking.

1997-1999: The Black T-Shirt Years
Brian Root was introduced to the internet and to the furry community simultaneously while a teenager in 1997 by his then-friend and neighbor, Keith Aksland, an avid reader and fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Soon thereafter, Root started mucking on FurToonia under the screen name Fauxx, and contributing to what was then known as the Squeaky Clean Furry Archive (or as it came to later be known, Yerf). Like every privledged young white furry with aspirations of being really edgy and oppressed someday, he wore a trenchcoat, grew his hair long, played Werewolf:_the_Apocalypse, and listened to Nine Inch Nails a lot.

Within about 18 months of his introduction to the furry community, Root began to associate with individuals who were very critical of the scene - the Burned Furs - and found that their opinions had an appeal for him. Perhaps because of his chosen peers, or perhaps because of his rebellious teenage mentality and existing penchant for stirring controversy, he came totally unglued and started posting lengthy, incomprehensible rants to alt.fan.furry about how everything and everyone in the furry community was stupid. Please don't google them. They're embarassing.

1999-2001: Monastic Absence
Suddenly, in the summer of 1999, Root disappeared. For two years he walked the earth as a monk, learning the secret North Star kung-fu, totally invisible to the internet while pursuing religious obligations in England. It was after his return from that country that he started using the screen name rootdown, a moniker given to him by other missionaries who could punch people so hard that they exploded and their blood and entrails would spell out the word "Ouch!" on nearby walls.

2001-2003: The Portal of Evil
rootdown is frequently, and to his great irritation, mistaken for a Something Awful goon. In reality, root is not and never has been a member of the Something Awful forums, nor has he ever been a fan of that website. This confusion probably stems from the fact that for a number of years, root was a participant in the Portal of Evil forums and chat room. It was here that he learned how to most effectively argue with people on the internet, and also that he didn't actually enjoy arguing with people on the internet very much.

In the summer of 2003, root attended the second Portal of Evil convention (POEcon), and that same month stopped posting regularly to their forums. Despite no longer being an active member of their community, he remains friends with the many other Internet Celebrities and forum alumni that he met through that site, including but not limited to 665 creator JSP, PoE cofounder K. Thor Jensen, and SexSexWorld field operative Hooper X.

Rumor has it that Divefox punched rootdown in the face at Anthrocon 2002. It was a traumatic experience for root, one that still gives him horrifying flashbacks to this very day. If you had been punched at a convention you've never attended, you'd understand.

2003-Present: Chat on the Internet
After returning from England, rootdown began mucking again. On one of his primary hangouts he met and soon became close friends with his frequent collaborator and co-conspirator Stiv, and together they started the muck Unknown Epicentres (or UEI). It was also during this time that rootdown created the now-defunct Voltron Boards, a messageboard that for whatever reason was primarily used for linking to and discussing bad art. During this time, rootdown and Stiv would frequently "invade" other mucks and recruit the most obnoxious and intelligent people they could find to join UEI.

(An interesting historical note: Because many of the members of UEI were brought together through shared frustrations with what they felt was the creative stagnation predominant in the furry scene, they liked to refer to their muck as the "rival school" to Postvixen's Puzzlebox muck -- another muck created out of the same motivations as UEI, though taking off in a completely opposite direction. It was the UEI crowd that gave Puzzlebox it's three-letter acronym designation as PBX. Postvixen has on more than one occasion called rootdown the "bizzarro Postvixen.")

After a few years, rootdown became bored with UEI and stopped paying the server fees. The muck switched hosts, but many of the core members stopped visiting. One of the problems root saw in mucking was that many of his friends, which by this point were from all over the internet, not just the muck-friendly furry scene, found the interface to be obtuse and counterintuitive, and so just wouldn't connect. In an effort to bring more of his friends together who shared interests and attitudes, he created the legendary AIM chat room, Chat on the Internet.

COTI was an instant success. Within days, you could find people in COTI day or night, telling dick jokes. Because anybody with an AIM client can participate and be invited, and everybody and their mom has an AIM screen name, COTI became a persistent and growing fixture. The tradition of raiding and recruiting creative assholes that started in UEI lived on in COTI, and it is of significant note many of the administrators and moderators of the messageboard Eat All Furries were assimilated by the horrifying COTI hivemind.

The EAF mods then went on to make Stiv the only active moderator of their forum, and for the last three months of EAF's lifespan he would entertain himself by banning everyone who posted. On September 11th, 2004, the forum was shut down for good and replaced with an MSpaint image of a wolf flying into the World Trade Center.

Art and Art Philosophy
Ever the contrarian, rootdown has constantly asserted that he does not believe in developing a single distinctive and recognizable art style, as is a popular practice among furry artists, but that it is more important instead to have a wide range of working modes. To this end he is constantly experimenting and exploring different techniques, combining traditional media in pencil, sumi-e, and watercolor with digital work in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and Alias Maya. He has yet to "find a voice," or an approach to creating artwork that he is really comfortable with.

rootdown names as his influences Tony DiTerlizzi, David Choe, Jordan Crane, Norman Rockwell, Nick Bantock, Julia Margaret Cameron, Nancy Stahl, Dave McKean, and Frank Frazetta.

Curiously, his artwork done as Astolpho deliberately ignores his never-draw-the-same-way-twice philosophy, instead maintaining an internally cohesive and self-consciously formulaic approach throughout. Whether or not this pattern continues now that the secret identities are no longer secret remains to be seen.

Holy crap, rootdown is Astolpho??
In an apocalyptic revelation in the summer of 2005, rootdown came out before God and the internet a babyfur - and not just any babyfur, but Astolpho, an illustrator rapidly gaining popularity in the babyfur community. Astonishingly, nobody among his carefully edited and highly elite circle of internet friends flinched - they all knew he was kind of funny in the head already and so it really came as no huge surprise that he was bent in that way. Conversely, while his asshole friends took the fact that root was a closet babyfur in stride, a handful of his babyfur fans were horrified to discover that their hero, the patient and loveable Astolpho, was in reality a closet asshole.

2010-2013: Postnuclear Roadwarrior
spoiler

Together with his plucky band of punk-rock rebels, rootdown ekes out an existence in defiance of the megacorporation that threatens to enslave the last free enclaves of humanity. He enforces his own sassy brand of lawless justice and wears gigantic spiked shoulderpads. No power in heaven or on earth can stop him or the army of giant robots he is building in his secret base deep under the surface of the earth.
