Exodite Dragon: Corrected erroneous information regarding the reason behind the deletion of BBM and the _Horrors communities.

BigBadMod (often shortened to BBM) was an account that acted as the maintainer of the various _Horrors groups on LiveJournal (the exception being copy-cat community Furbid_Horrors which operates independently to this day). It was created shortly after the founding of VCL_Horrors by Iatro, Thrack and IndigoFox, who later gave secondary access to Exodite Dragon, Jade Sparrow and Skwerl.

Because of the sporadic periods of Internet access possessed by each account user, the BBM rarely appeared to play an active role in moderation of the communities it controlled. IndigoFox appears to have abandoned his use of the journal in early 2005, while Thrack, Jade and Skwerl used the journal sporadically, often not logging in for weeks at a time. Iatro performed basic maintenance, such as controlling flame wars, while Exodite Dragon was the most vocal, posting to communities and running the e-mail account.

Consequently moderation was choppy, inconsistent, and often abusive in its tone towards members of each _Horrors community. Between September 4 and September 7 2006, Kaffawolf forced Exodite to delete the account and the associated communities due to their lack of utility and potential to disrupt the Furry Fiesta and AnthroExpressions projects. All accounts and information related to BBM were changed and deleted without the approval of any other mods.

Exodite Dragon: Removed useless links

Unreferenced

Otherkin describes those who believe that their physical forms do not define or fully encompass their mental states, personality, psychology, or spiritual nature. The term predates its use on the Internet, and is believed to have been coined in the late 1980's by those who felt an affinity or connection to the fae folk and/or elves of traditional mythological culture and folklore. First appearing in use on the Internet in 1996, the word was intended to imply some form of kinship with an 'other' element outside of a person's biological nature, physical mind and experiences, and human life.

Otherkin beliefs
Stated simply, Otherkin in general feel they have a sympathetic connection, affinity, or some other form of relation with another animal or being. Traditionally these have tended to be mythological in nature, beginning with fairy and fey folk, elves, and a few other European mythological archetypes. Later, associations with other creatures became common, including unicorns, gryphons, dragons, angelics, and demons; as well as "non-living" types such as golems and other inorganics. In time, some people also began to describe concepts for beings which were derived from mythological archetypes, though having unique qualities. And, the truly undefinable or one-of-a-kind creature appeared as well.

With the unusual nature of the basic Otherkin premises, there has been skepticism directed at it along with the proposal that many people adopt the Otherkin identity to justify social difficulties - the outcast syndrome - or because they have a delusion and are in denial about their biological humanity. The idea that Otherkin believe they are physically non-human in a spectacular way - such as actually being biological dragons - is seen as a pervasive misunderstanding by Otherkin themselves, who point out the spiritual and psychological focus of the concept. It has been postulated within the community that this confusion arises from those unfamiliar with the concept or having only a sketchy and perhaps distorted awareness; comparing it to psychiatric cases such as lycanthropy and dissociative identity disorder, concluding that in order for someone to state that they identify as an elf or gryphon, they must be experiencing a form of hallucination or delusion.

Contrary to stereotypes which have been perpetuated, it appears that most who identify as Otherkin are fully aware of their biology and human existence. Many Otherkin do have particular spiritual and metaphysical beliefs, and as part of those beliefs have discussed elements of a proposed spiritual reality which is not to be confused with the material world. Even if a given person believes, for instance, that on a spiritual plane they may have wings, it is uncommon that they are making a claim about such things that is scientific in nature, or that they exist in what most people might consider the real world.

Despite these points, some dislike the Otherkin concept on the grounds that they feel it is abusable by individuals who wish to present themselves as special and unique without merit, and that making unverifiable spiritual claims is one way to achieve this. Over time, Otherkin has proven to be appealing to a number of people for this reason, and those within the community can be rigorous about screening out 'me too' and 'fluffbunny' adopters of the Otherkin moniker. Some Otherkin themselves do not consider the Internet Kin community to have much or any validity at all, citing that it is very easy for a person to claim almost anything within the realm of online anonymity.

It is important though to observe that within the loosely defined Otherkin community, online or off, there is no consensus as to just what makes a person Otherkin. A variety of phenomena have been observed and theorized about which many feel create some sort of affinity between a person and something else. In this light, some see Otherkin as related to concepts such as Totemism which have appeared in human culture since ancient times. There has also been some debate over how potential factors such as Clinical Lycanthropy may account for a percentage of the experiences Otherkin believe they have had. While many, and some believe most, Otherkin follow a paradigm of spiritual reincarnation in some form to help explain their state of being, it is worth noting not all Otherkin are reincarnationalist and may view themselves in other spiritual, philosophical, or psychological frameworks. Even among those who might call themselves reincarnationalists, there is wide array of interpretations about what reincarnation means.

Additionally, another viewpoint is that the term Otherkin largely denotes a social network and should not, or can not, be used as a description for individual spiritual beliefs or to describe an particular theory or explanation for phenomenon. Many people use the Otherkin community to find discussion for a variety of subjects and to compare subjective experiences without considering themselves to be Otherkin in a descriptive sense.

Otherkin and Therianthropy
Otherkin bears no small resemblance to Therianthropy, and some people consider them the same thing and use them interchangeably - some might feel there is not enough inherent difference between the concepts, while others might be outsiders who are not familiar with the nuances or history of the ideas and communities surrounding them. However, in tradition to date, Otherkin has come to be associated with people who experience an affinity with an animal, creature, or being which might ordinarily be considered mythological, or sometimes entirely unique/alien. By contrast, Therianthropy is heavily connected to the affinity for existing, real-world animals which have been observed to live today in nature or to have lived in the past. Typically, someone who identifies with fairies, elves, dragons, gryphons, unicorns, or even angelic or demonic beings might be seen as Otherkin. While one who identifies with wolves, foxes, bears, cats big and small, or otters might be seen as a Therianthrope.

In some cases, a specific person might consider themselves - if they use a formal term or subculture association at all - a member of either community in spite of their species/entity connection. For example, someone who feels they are a part of the general Otherkin community socially might use the term Therianthropy to describe the mechanics of their own nature.

Otherkin and Furry Fandom
Furry fans appear to be generally aware of Otherkin and Therianthropy. The practices and viewpoints of many Furry Lifestylers have some similarity to these ideas, and because of this some Lifestylers have associated with one or both terms. Likewise, while Furry fandom in general might not have been formed to explore spiritual connections with animals and other creatures, many Otherkin and Therianthropes find the content and subject matter of Furry appealing because of their own interests. In the opposite direction, many Furry fans discover the Otherkin community through the fandom and begin to take part in it as well.

A noticeable number of people within the Otherkin community are also Furry fans in some capacity and frequently attend events such as Furry Conventions in addition to Otherkin-specific social events. The philosophy and spirituality tracks at some conventions have hosted Otherkin and Therian speakers. Panels and discussions on mythology have also attracted Otherkin to participate. Otherkin who are artists have used Furry conventions to display their work, and those with an interest in make-up and costuming have attended for masquerade contests and dances.

Some Otherkin also feel that Furry fandom is a more relaxed atmosphere in which to explore ideas of animal and human relations and hybrids, seeing the fandom's lack of core spiritual doctrines as neutral ground. Due to this, some people decide to leave the general Otherkin and Therian communities in favor of Furry. Furry events are sometimes popular as a meeting place with Otherkin who are geographically isolated from kin-specific events.

Controversy within Furry Fandom
Opinions vary as to whether or not their association with the fandom is positive, negative, or irrelevant. Some people find the association of Furry with things beyond its base definition of the appreciation of anthropomorphic animals in art and fiction to be inappropriate, ridiculous, or uncomfortable. Because of this, Otherkin and Therian connections or intermingling with the fandom have taken on a pejorative tint for such people. Much as Furry Lifestylers are disliked in some instances, Otherkin might be made to feel unwelcome or derided by some in Furry.

A large degree of fandom awareness has been spread not only by contact with Otherkin within the fandom, but by the adoption of Otherkin as another topic with which to portray elements of Furry in humorous or negative light by websites such as Something Awful and Crush! Yiff! Destroy!. Due to such framing, Otherkin has for some people become a generic term to identify Furries who feel there is something more to their animal avatar than role-playing. Some also point out that a good deal of Otherkin awareness has been spread by sardonic humor which often singles out individuals with the most outrageous behavior or controversial opinions, and as a result there appear to be inaccuracies in the knowledge of many furry fans and nonfurs relating to more moderate members of the Otherkin community.

In response, others have said in spite of this confusion, there are those who identify as Otherkin while putting forth dubious claims and questionable behavior. Because of the effect of visibility from the crowd, it is often the most over the top examples that get seen by outsiders, not unlike the problems with publicity that Furry fandom has endured over time.

Outside Otherkin
Otherkin is a label to describe personal beliefs, experiences, and traits that occur in a variety of combinations depending on the individual. As there is no consensus on what qualifies as Otherkin, not everyone who shares similar beliefs feels the term is appropriate or useful for themselves.

Some who could describe themselves as Otherkin downplay or conceal those beliefs, citing outbreaks of controversy. Others have observed this to be ironic, with the claim that sometimes those who believe much the same things as Otherkin do are considered by to be "more sane". Other people have confessed to being reluctant of revealing the actual extent of their beliefs for fear of losing status or being ostracized by a particular community.
At the time of its founding, gryphons were not a well known mythical creature, and one of the purposes of the Guild was to get the word out and increase their popularity online.

The community has expanded to include a member's art gallery, java and IRC chats, a message board, e-mail lists, and more.

History
The Gryphon's Guild was founded in 1994 by Tserisa with the support of Alexander the Gryphen and others. It began as a manually distributed e-mail newsletter. Notable members in the early days included Spice Vachon/Poe Frog and Bry. The first GryphBoard, hosted on Inside the Web, was formed on September 29, 1997. It was soon averaging 40,000 hit counts a month, and is really what got the community going. Inside the Web closed down March 5, 2001, and the Board was officially moved to its new EZBoard location Feb. 2001.
VCL Horrors was a LiveJournal community created in 2004 dedicated to critiquing, mocking and generally gaping at the more extreme uploads at the VCL - extreme either in the sense of an extreme topic, a regular fetish taken to extremes, or just extremely bad art. Popular topics included macro, vore and hermaphrodite pictures, as well as any sort of non-mainstream pornography, or "angsty" and "cutting" pictures.

A standard post consisted of direct links to VCL artwork with separate annotation on just what was horrific about the artwork. The artwork and artists involved were typically derided by members in the comments. Posts about a particular artist sometimes featured links to their gallery or other works, as well as the particular artwork that prompted the post.

However, community rules did, in fact, prohibit snark directed towards amateur art and specifically warned against both bashing artists directly or 'picking on' specific artists by repeatedly posting their uploads..

The community was owned and maintained by BigBadMod, an account controlled by Iatro, IndigoFox, Skwerl, Jade Sparrow, Thrack, and Exodite Dragon.

Community
While the community was mainly composed of teenagers and college students, it includes a handful of artists, a few of whom have had their work featured in the group.

The community also suffered an inaccurate "anti-furry" label. However, most (if not all) of the regular posters were members of the fandom.

Controversy
At one point, VCL administrator Ch'marr blocked linking to the site from the VCL Horrors community. Some VCL artists posted "hate art" directed at the community.

The community also sparked many arguments about the VCL's art submission policies, and attracted a variety of high-profile artists' (such as Chris Sawyer) complaints within the community's journal itself.

The end of the road
On March 18, 2006, the community was deleted by with no warning. Many members were confused, and a "backup" community (VCL_Snark) was founded in its place. Many people left comments on Sian Silverhair's LiveJournal, believing that as a prominent poster, she knew what had happened. However this was not the case, and upon sending an email to the community owner, BigBadMod, her visitors learned that because too many people had broken the rules, the community had been put under a "time-out".

On March 22, 2006, the community was undeleted, but had been put under pre-moderation. No moderation was actually done for an entire week, and the lack of new posts led to more confusion.

For a period of time thereafter, the community was set back to user-moderation. However, on August 28, 2006, it was again placed under permanent pre-moderation review, with BBM citing a clear disdain for the rules by the membership.

Shortly thereafter, on September 7, 2006, the community was permanently deleted along with the other _Horrors communities (and the BigBadMod account) by Exodite.
For a period of time thereafter, the community was set back to user-moderation. However, on August 28, 2006, it was again placed under permanent pre-moderation review citing a clear disdain for the rules by the membership.

Shortly thereafter, on September 7 2006, the community was permanently deleted along with the other _Horrors communities (and the BigBadMod account) by Exodite_Dragon.
Because of the sporadic periods of Internet access possessed by all three, the BBM account rarely appeared to play an active role in moderation of the communities it controlled.
