TigerTails Radio is a furry Internet radio show based in the United Kingdom, started by TK Tiger in mid-2004. It streams every Monday night on FM and a server provided by Mhisani.

In its first season, one three-hour show was broadcast for every day of the year. The show has changed format numerous times, and has raised over £1000 for UK children's charity Comic Relief.

* Address: http://www.tigertailsradio.co.uk/
* Founder: TK Tiger
* Ran from/to: 20 July 2004 - present

Season One
TigerTails Radio was started because TK Tiger felt that most Internet radio was rubbish, as all the stations he found were MP3 playlists with no one presenting the show. Teaming up with Blaster Hedgie, TK decided to "put the voice" back in to Internet radio by running a furry radio station for an entire year. The first airdate was 20 July 2004.

For the first few broadcasts, TigerTails Radio was just talk radio, but MP3s soon found their way into the show as TK purchased more equipment. By the end of Season One, the show was running two feeds: one in mono for dial-up users, and a second in stereo for those on broadband.

Season One aired for three hours, every night of the week. When neither TK nor BH hosted the show, a reserve co-host was drafted in to cover. Replacement hosts included other UK furs Lazerus101, Tungro, SouthPaw, and Goten.

After 365 shows, TigerTails Radio celebrated its first birthday, and was killed off by TK, as it had achieved his goal of airing every single day since its creation.

ShepFact
During Season One, TK decided it was a good idea to have content supplied by the listeners. One listener was a fountain of knowledge who had just appeared on the Furry scene named Shep Shepherd. Every day Shep would supply the show with a fact, which either host would read out during the ShepFact music (a 50 second version of the Blue Peter theme). Shep would then put the fact in his LiveJournal, and TK would update the TigerTails Radio website. When Shep was in the studio, he often prepared extra special ShepFacts for the show. To this day, Shep continues to post a daily ShepFact to his journal.

Memorable shows
The 80's Disco Night
The most memorable show from Season One was the 80's Disco. This is the only show the cast have a full archive of. The show ran for eight hours, 9PM until 5AM UK time. The main show was the normal three hours, but it was bookended by non-stop 80's music. The studio was turned into a dance-floor, complete with food, drinks, disco lights, and a mirror ball. A large number of guests turned up for the show, though few lasted the whole eight hours. A non-furry friend of Blaster Hedgie archived the show and posted it to the studio.

Karaoke Night
To celebrate the changing of the year from 2004 to 2005, TigerTails Radio held a karaoke night. Music was provided by the studio's PS2 and various editions of the game SingStar. A large number of gusts came to see the new year in, and many took part in the singing. Notable performances included Klepsydra singing "Ace Of Spades", Leinir performing "Ain't No Sunshine", and TK's version of "Affirmation" - which he hated, but a few listeners enjoyed enough to ask him to repeat the song. He refused, and it became a running gag to ask TK to sing Affirmation. Klepsydra's "Ace Of Spades" was voted the best song of the night.

The Waffle Night
Near the end of Season One, a visit to the studio by Lazerus101 inspired the cast to relive the old talk radio style of show. The conversation was fast and flowing, to the point where the entire show had passed without anyone remembering to play any music. Only one listener complained about this, while others wrote in to say how much they had enjoyed the show.

TigerTails Radio Comic Relief Gunge-a-thon 1
12 March 2005 was the night of the UK childrens' charity Comic Relief (also known as "Red Nose Day".) TK decided it would be a good idea to raise money for this good cause by throwing 8 litres (US: liter) of BBC gunge over the regular cast members. TK Tiger press-ganged Bungle BearSkunk, Blaster Hedgie, and Lazerus101 into taking part as victims. Guests in the studio could donate money to pour the bucket of gunge over the cast member sat in "the hot seat" - which was a very cold seat as the gungings took place outside on a cold spring night.

Dark Lordess poured a bucket of orange gunge over TK first. An hour later Lazerus101 dumped 8 litres of blue gunge over BH. Another hour followed before TK got to be on the pouring end of the bucket, as he covered Bungle in a second blue bucket. Finally at around 1:30am, Laz received a bucket of orange gunge from TimmyPup, who had donated £100 via the TigerTails Radio's portion of the Comic Relief website, kindly setup by SouthPaw. The show raised £301 in total.

The Final Show
TigerTails Radio celebrated its first birthday on 20 July 2005. During this show, TK made the announcement that this would be the last TigerTails Radio broadcast for Season One. The show turned in to a party, with people remembering their favorite shows, or sections from the show. After the show ended, the cast (chiefly TK, Blaster Hedgie and Shep Shepherd) waited a few moments before broadcasting an extra section for another hour of random fun. The show finally ended for real with TK reprising his karaoke night performance of "Affirmation".

Pup Music Radio
Pup Music was a radio project to carry on where TigerTails Radio left off. A group of TigerTails Radio listeners, lead by Goten, came together and created their own show. Pup Music later became Furocious Radio, the show for Furocious Entertainment - the Manchester Northern Furmeet site.

Season Two
Over half a year after TigerTails Radio was pulled off the air, Blaster Hedgie asked TK Tiger if he fancied restarting the radio show. TK agreed, and got to work preparing everything for Season Two of TigerTails Radio. This time the show would not be aired every night, but only when both TK and BH had the time to spare. This created a sporadic show schedule, so TK decided to archive each show and offer them for download for those who missed an episode.

Technical issues
Season Two aired 36 shows. The last show was the second Comic Relief Gunge show. Many technical problems stopped Season 2 from reaching its target of 100 shows, with two hard disk failures in the broadcast machine, the loss of the show archive server, amp and mixer problems, and the loss of the broadcast server.

Memorable shows
Show #0
22nd of February 2006 was the date of the pilot show, numbered show #0. It wasn't a true show, but a live dry-run to test the new equipment. It got a good number of listeners, even without advertising. The show ran for the full three hours, and featured Silver Tomcat live via Skype, a new feature.

TigerTails Radio Comic Relief Gunge-a-thon 2
After raising over £300 in 2005, everyone involved thought it would be a good idea to try and raise the same amount, if not more, when Comic Relief 2007 rolled around. Three months of planning came together on 16 March 2007, when the second Gunge-a-thon took place. Ten furs, including the four victims from last time, took part - each getting a bucket of BBC gunge and a second bucket of something else.

The BBC gunge was poured by a friend of TK from the world of theatre. Like before, those in the studio could donate to pour a second bucket over the victim. A few victims' second bucket had been decided before the event thanks to online donations. These included Jowgenetsu's gunging with porridge at the hands of Lord Voldemort as Jowgenetsu looked like Harry Potter.

Furs gunged were Lazerus101, SouthPaw, Jowgenetsu, Xell, Tungro, Bungle BearSkunk, WolfPaw, Tryst, Blaster Hedgie, and finally TK Tiger.

The night raised £700 for Comic Relief, more than double the 2005 effort, and £200 more than the night's target of £500.

Season Three
Season Three of TigerTails Radio began airing on 17 September 2007, starting with another Show #0. It didn't go smoothly and a few problems were discovered and ironed out. The studio lost its Internet connection on the date Show #1 was due to air due to a change in ISP. Show #0.5 aired on Monday 19 November, using the studio's brand new (and much faster) Internet connection. This test show went without major incident, and Sacred was even able to call in to the studio via Skype without the technical difficulties previously involved.

A problem with spyware caused a big headache for TK shortly before Show #5 was due to air, as it killed the broadcast machine. Show #5 was not only Season 3's first Theme Night (TV Theme Tunes in this case), but it was also the Christmas Eve/Day show. A hasty install of XP (on a failing hard disk) failed to resolve the problem, forcing TK to reinstate an old piece of show equipment replaced after Season 1. Blaster Hedgie's laptop had been used to provide the music for the show but was replaced by the Skype PC in Season Two and vinyl records in Season Three. It served as a broadcast machine until TK fixed the normal broadcast computer.

While a schedule of airing dates was be listed on the front page of the TigerTails Radio website, the cast tried to air a show every Monday if possible. It was agreed that a regular air-date would help the show gain repeat listeners, while extra shows could be added mid-week if needed. TigerTails Radio 24 (see TTR24 below) saw listeners in to 2008 instead of a regular show, with Season Three restarted on Monday 7 January.

Show #14 was the first show to take advantage of the FM server, allowing TigerTails Radio to broadcast in stereo for the first time since late Season One. The BritFur stream was broadcast in 128kbps stereo, whereas Pridelands was still broadcast in 56kbps mono. As of Show #16, the show archive is recorded in stereo.

Show #22 was the first show to introduce a musical underscore to each show, and also a change in format (see Memorable Show #22). This format was maintained until Show #29.

On the morning of Show #29, six days before the show's fourth birthday, long-standing co-host BH decided to stand down from TigerTails Radio. His LiveJournal post on the matter lists his work schedule as one reason for deciding to quit, as well as feeling that he was no longer up to the task of being entertaining. BH had failed to appear on every show since Show #25, so his announcement was no surprise. His departure saw TK take the show back to its pirate roots for a while while a new co-host was sourced.

After a period of time, regular guest Eeve3 became the new co-host, while another member of TK's household, Xavier, became the new regular guest. Records were replaced by MP3s again after the motor in the record player became unreliable, and the show never returned to the musical-underscore format of the PSP days. After Show #43, plans to end Season Three at Show #52 were decided, with TTR24 taking over the slot until a good working arrangement for Season Four could be decided upon.

Memorable shows
Show #17
Dubbed the EPIC SHOW OF POWER by Dante the Jedi in the #tigertailsradio AnthroChat IRC channel, Show #17 was a small celebration of Easter 2008 that quickly got out of hand. Southpaw visited the studio for the first time in Season 3, Hedgie actually got something right for a change, and the show Blankety Blank actually ran like the TV show for the first time since the team started doing it. After the show ended, TK decided to broadcast a little extra music to scare the people still connected in to going to bed.

TK played "classic" old records like Mr Blobby, Rupert The Bear, The Addams Groove, and a collection of Black Lace songs. Eventually, he resorted to letting Hedgie sing on the show, even digging out Affirmation (not seen since the end of Season One). Listeners were then invited to message the studio to show they were still listening. Responding listeners were (in no order): Kyyanno, Mhisani, CW Tyger, Dante the Jedi, Split Persona and Owl, though server stats at the time reported nine users connected to the streams. Finally, after an extra two hours, TK called it a night and ended the broadcast for real, ending after a second round of the National Anthem (played at the end of every show since Season One Show #1) and a firm instruction of "Go To Bed", followed by a brief message announcing there will be "No Extra Part 2". Finally, the connections to Pridelands and BritFur were disconnected.

The archive (in the original .ogg format) was 148MB in size, compared to the show's normal archive size of around 90MB.

Show #22
Nicknamed the Dead Show in a LiveJournal post by TK before the show aired, this was the first show of Season Three to run without any copyrighted music. It was also the first show ever to have backing music for the entire show. The new format came thanks to technical failures in two of the show's fleet of PCs (taking three hard-disks with them). The show was a very basic affair, with the opening jingle and the entire night's backing music being supplied by TK's PlayStation Portable. There was no Skype or messengers running, and IRC was op-less as the secondary IRC machine was the only IRC PC running. The show ended with TK playing the National Anthem live using BH's Keytar, as the .ogg version normally played wasn't converted and put on the PSP in time.

This show was three hours of talking, much like the Waffle Night of Season One. Though constant buffering problems kept the listener count down, those who did battle through the skipping gave enough positive feedback to convince TK to keep the format and turn TigerTails Radio in to BritFur FM's first Talk Show, which also meant that TigerTails Radio was no longer a pirate radio show.

Mustan provided the Blankety Blank questions for the night, which was won by TK (winning 50 blanks).

Show #41
Also known as "The Drunk Show!", in which TigerTails Radio took a somewhat more alcohol-fueled look at the world for one night only, sponsored by Dante the Jedi. Having work in the morning, TK was drinking Tiger Beer (so he wouldn't get too drunk), Eeve3 was on vodka-based drinks, the teetotal Jowgenetsu was on Coke, while guests Lazerus, FoxieDragon and Draconder were drinking vodka, pear cider and beer respectively.

The evening ended with Eeve3 being more drunk than she had ever been in her life, and a rather merry FoxieDragon being escorted home by Lazerus and Jowgenetsu. Eeve3 woke up still drunk; after suffering her hangover she vowed never to drink that much again, ever!

Theme nights
While Season One had a theme night every Saturday, the idea was ditched for Season Two. Season Three saw the return of the theme night idea. The original plan was to have a theme night every fifth show, but that ultimately did not happen. So far, the theme nights have been:
* Show #05 - TV Themes
* Show #10 - Novelty Singles
* Show #15 - Video Games
* Show #20 - Movies and Musicals
* Show #28 - Experimental Music
* Show #32 - The Music of Michael Jackson

Pre-Season Four
TTR24 lasted until January 2009, whereupon a series of Pre-Season Four shows began. A new mixer and a condenser microphone had been obtained over the Christmas period, and TK was keen to play with his new toys. Using a mic stand stolen from BH's copy of Rock Band and a good number of cable ties, TK managed to rig up a system where three microphones could be used, with a fourth mic hanging from TK's headphone cable. With the microphones no longer on the table, laptops could be brought in, and IRC corner was moved from afar to the centre of the action.

A new phono to USB adapter had also been obtained, allowing the show to be broadcast on one PC via USB (eliminating Sound Card Hiss) while a PC connected to the phono output could archive everything. An old PC was found, and the archiving software installed. The USB audio input, however, caused one of the show's webcams to fail (due to driver conflicts) resulting in the show only having a single webcam where there had been two in Season Three.

Finally, thanks to the new mixer having a cross-fader, TK's PSP could make a come-back with the backing music. The laptop formally belonging to BH was once again used to supply the normal music. It was also used to let TK play in IRC. The backing music was again Creative Commons, and mostly sourced from the artist Sanxion7.

9 Pre-Season Four shows ran, with Show #9 being the first to reintroduce Skype on a dedicated PC since the trial runs of Season Three. Show #9 was also the first show to introduce a second new mixer which allowed for increased volumes on the microphones (a problem plaguing the other Pre-Season Four shows), more sound effects, and the allowance for more things to be plugged in. Another mixer was rescued from the Season Three left-overs and used for the Skype PC. Fellow BritFur broadcaster Stuart Otterson joined the final Pre-Season Four show via Skype, winning the call-in game of "Twenty Questions" on his final chance.

Season Four
Season Four started on March 16 2009. The show still uses Shoutcast, and will support podcasting. The first podcast went live in late February, and was a segment of Pre-Season Four show #6. The segment was a trial run of a feature named That Time of the Month; a topical (and amusing) news quiz designed to give BH an excuse to come out retirement once a month. That Time of the Month will be done on the last show of each month, with the cast reviewing the month's news.

The Pre-Season Four shows helped the cast bash out a rough schedule for each show. The first 30 minutes is spent with the opening song, and the cast talking about their week, as well as any important news that may have affected them. The second half of the first hour is spent reviewing things, and updates on the Xavier Retro Gaming Challenge (another new segment for Season Four). The last hour is mostly chatting with IRC, playing music, Skype games, and if it's the last show of the month then That Time of the Month is played.

Future plans for Season Four include the TigerTails Radio Comic Relief Gunge-a-thon 3, which has been put-back due to the economic downturn. This is now due to take place during the summer months.

The first update of the Yahoo360 blog in 2009 revealed the first show of Season Four was Show #472, counting all full shows since the very first show of Season One on July 20 2004. On Monday 20 July 2009, TigerTails Radio will hit Show #490, and become 5 years old.

TTR24
TigerTails Radio 24 (TTR24 for short) is a playlist set up for times when TigerTails Radio would normally be off-air, or for when a main show can't appear as scheduled. TTR24 often takes over during Christmas and New Years, and can run for many days non-stop. Season Three Show #28 saw TTR24 precede TigerTails Radio's live show for the first time, something which continued until the end of the season. TTR24 then took over for a few weeks before Season Four began in March 2009.

In times when the main TigerTails Radio show can not be broadcast, TTR24 is broadcast on all regular show servers. All other times, TTR24 is exclusive to the Pridelands server.

TigerTails Radio Meet #1
Announced in the Pre-Season Four shows, the TigerTails Radio Meet was a planned furmeet to take place in the city of Southampton (UK) during the first weekend of June 2009. While listening to the broadcast of Slaughter House Radio after the meet was announced, TK heard Stuart Otterson call the meet "The TigerTails Radio Convention", which coined the tagline "It's a meet, not a con!". Rough details of the event were listed on the TigerTails Radio Facebook page, with more detailed information appearing on the main TigerTails Radio Website when it was finalised.

Around twenty people turned up (though before the meet TK estimated only around seven would), including other BritFur hosts White Virus from Virus Core Radio and Stuart Otterson from Slaughter House Radio. The meet surprised some attendees by revealing that not all TigerTails Radio listeners are members of the Furry Fandom, though furs and non-furs mingled with great ease.

The first day was spent in a rather green part of Southampton known as Southampton Common, a patch of common land which contains lots of open space and trees. A planned barbecue was a huge success, with a small "instant barbecue" lasting for two hours - over twice its normal length. Even the weather held out, providing lots of glorious sunshine without getting too hot. The second day of the meet was spent eating at Chinese restaurants and looking around the shopping areas.

The initial feedback from the meet was positive enough to warrant thinking about another meet late in Season Four, or early in Season Five.

The American Journal of Anthropomorphics (AJA) was a series of furry art books edited by Darrell Benvenuto and published by his Med Systems Company, with four issues released between 1993 and 1997. (The ISSN was 1071-8745.) The cover price was US$10.

The mainstay of the series were its artist sections, typically a half dozen pages each of illustrations by various artists. The intent of the Journal was to present furry artists in as professional a light as possible, and for it to be used as a talent catalogue for publishers seeking artists in the field of anthropomorphics or funny animals.

The variety of artists in the journal showed different styles of furry artwork, although the number of artists included may make it less appealing to collectors looking for a lot of one particular style.

The Journal also included art tutorial articles ("Artist's Corner"), serial art ("graphic stories") and "reviews", although these were generally advertisements rather than criticism.

The front and back covers were printed in color, while the interior art was black-and-white.

Issue #1
Published in September 1993, the first AJA was 104 pages long. It lacked page numbers. The front cover was a beach scene by Steve Martin, featuring his character Mauvette. The back cover was "I hate shedding season!" by Roy D. Pounds II.
* Artist sections: Eric Schwartz, Robert Guthrie, Steven Martin, Kyla Littlejohn, Daphne Lage, Jeff Wood, Josef Ricketts, Dan Flahive, Mark Mandolia, Michael-Scot McMurry, Ruben Rodriguez
* Reviews: Cerebus, Tall Tails, Revelations
* Artist's Corner by Kyla Littlejohn
* Fiction: "Peacock" by Kishma Danielle, illustrated by Kyla Littlejohn; and "Tales from the Reservationpart 1" illustrated by Daphne Lage.

Issue #2
Released in August 1994, this issue had 124 pages. The front cover was a jungle portrait by Monika Livingstone of her persona character SiberKat. The back cover by Taral Wayne featured his character Dixie wading through a swamp.
* Graphic stories: "The Dragonslayers" by Daphne Lage, "Male Prerogative" and "Horse-Fly" by Jeff Wood, "Dream City" Part One by Craig Carrington, "Hotel California" by Mitchell R. Beiro

* Fiction: "Tales from the Reservation part 2" illustrated by Daphne Lage.

Issue #3
The March 1995 issue was 118 pages. Both the front cover ("A Two-Fisted Christmas") and back cover ("The Awakening") were acrylic paintings by Steven Martin. The back inside cover carried a full-page ad by Eric Blumrich.
* Artist sections: Eric Schwartz, Shea Ryan, Terrie Smith, Kenneth Sample, Daphne Lage, Josef Ricketts, Joseph D. Ny, Ronald Van Bokhoven, Joshua Kennedy, Genesis Eve Cook, Taral Wayne, Timothy Fay, Michelle Parker

Issue #4
The final, 126 page book of the Journal (ISBN 1-887038-01-9) was published in January 1997 by Vision Books, Med Systems Company's new print subsidiary. The front cover ("Kalinda", 1996) and back cover ("Chained", 1995) were both ink and marker pieces of an anthro husky character by Michele Light. The back inside cover carried ad for Margaret Carspecken's Sweet Treats cookbook. The book was almost entirely dedicated to artist sections and featured not only a very large number of artists, but many artists not usually considered part of the furry fandom.
* Artist sections: Michele Light, Terrie Smith, Eric Blumrich, Jim Burns, Jill Bauman, Kathryn Bolinger, Enrique Rosenthal, Shane Fisher, April Lee, Andrew Pidcock, Shawntae Howard (model sheets for Extinctioners), Joshua Kennedy, Jay Naylor, Brian Ahern, Gwenn Seuling, Steve Simpson, Brian McPherson, Mark Shaw, Clark Alan Corwin, [[L. Furry fandom

Eulalia459678: Undo revision 260183 by 69.127.99.22 (talk)

Furry fandom, also known as furrydom, furridom, fur fandom or furdom, refers to the fandom for the furry genre of literature, art and entertainment. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of artists, writers, role players and general fans of the furry art forms who gather on the net and at conventions.

Members of the furry fandom, known as furry fans, furries, or furs, particularly enjoy media that includes fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walking on two legs, and wearing clothing.

Characters that morph between human and animal form are also considered by some to be part of the genre. Even certain superheroes with animal derived powers are considered of furry interest by some fans. The general idea being a combination of human and animal attributes, for which there is no documented science regarding what degrees of mixture are required. Even characters like Josie And The Pussycats are considered of interest to furry fandom, though they only wear costumes with animal ears and tails.
The furry genre
Definition
The furry genre (sometimes referred to as a meta-genre) is based on the idea of fantasy animal characters, rather than any one type of fiction. Any title in any form of media can be considered relative to the furry genre simply by having a fantasy animal character in it. Such characters are most often seen in cartoons, comics, science fiction, allegorical novels, Gothic horror movies, commercials and video games.

Outside the fandom, the most common term used to describe such characters is anthropomorphic (a word derived from the Greek; Anthropos Morphe, literally meaning Human Form). Those within the fandom prefer the term furry - hence the name furry fandom. Other terms for these types of characters are funny animal, talking animal, or kemono in Japan, although each of these has subtle differences in meaning.

History of the Furry Fandom
:See main article: History

In the earlier days of the Furry Fandom, fans used to gather mostly at science fiction, fantasy, and comic conventions before the furry parties broke out into full-fledged furry conventions. The fandom for furry characters traces its organization back to a science fiction convention in 1980, when a drawing of a character from Steve Gallacci’s Albedo started a discussion of anthropomorphic characters in science fiction novels, spawning a discussion group that met at various science fiction and comics conventions.

As the Internet became more accessible, it became the most popular means for furry fans to keep in touch and share their artistic efforts. This gained the fandom higher visibility and it began to grow rapidly.

Virtual environments, such as MUCKs, soon became the most popular places on the net for furry fans to meet and communicate. One of the oldest and largest MUCKs in existence is FurryMUCK. One of the newest virtual environments to attract furry fans is Second Life.

Near the beginning of the 80’s, the furry genre enjoyed the first explosion of popularity it had seen since the 1930’s. Furry characters littered the animation world as well as toy stores. But there was also adult furry entertainment.

Today, those furry fans who have discovered the large concentration of fellow fans on the net have joined with them to create the virtual society that is the collective furry community. Other furry fans, particularly the computer illiterate, remain isolated in their interest with little to no awareness that there is an organized community for fans of the furry genre.

The Furry community
The furry community, referred to by many as furry fandom, or just the fandom, is the virtual universe inhabited by all those who refer to themselves as "Furries."

It is a separate entity from what many fans of furry entertainment mean when they use the term furry fandom. To a traditional furry fan, furry fandom means fans of furry characters, period. But the community encompasses a great deal more than just the fandom for furry characters. It includes elements of religion, lifestyle and philosophy.

"Furriness" is the action of doing anything related to the furry character of a person.

Furry lifestyle
: See article: Furry lifestyle
The most commonly stated interest cited among members of the community, other than an enjoyment of furry entertainment, is a sense some may have of personally identifying with a certain kind of animal.

This is a relatively common aspect of human nature. Many people may feel an affinity for a certain type of animal. Marketers of collectibles have been creating products for people with such feelings for generations. Though it has rarely been something one had an open atmosphere in which to explore and get more deeply in touch with. The furry community, through its many virtual role play environments, provides this avenue for exploration into why certain people feel their particular affinity.

Some may view animals with a kind of religious reverence reminiscent of Buddhism, Shamanism or Otherkin. They may feel that they are the reincarnation of an animal, or that an animal spirit watches over them.

Creativity
Because the furry genre is widely considered to be a children’s market, there is a considerable lack of furry entertainment specifically geared to adult aged audiences. The community of mostly adult aged furry fans that has formed around the genre is particularly dedicated to filling the need for such products through fan creativity.

Content available from furry fans on the internet and at conventions covers a wide range of interests, including all manner of fantasy, philosophy, sex, politics, religion and lifestyle.

The genre is considered to be so versatile that it can extend into just about any form of creativity, from things as simple as recipe books with anthropomorphic illustrations to technical creations as complicated as interactive furry companions for your desktop. Other forms of furry craftsmanship include the creation of flash animation and fursuits.

But by far the most prolific output of furry fandom is artwork. Furry artwork produced by the fandom ranges from basic cartooning to highly detailed works fit for hanging in galleries. Furry artists also create a wide variety of comic strips. The subject matter of this artwork being as flexible as any other area of the furry arts, ranging from innocent depictions of cute furry character suitable for all ages, to mature works that are age restricted. There is also some writing in the furry fandom.

Sociability
Others may join the furry community simply because it is a free environment where one can form friendships without the normal social problems of having to hide one’s sexual orientation. It is also a place where some may come to find compassionate understanding and assistance with personal problems. The furry community prides itself on a concept of open mindedness and tolerance.

Fetishes
: See article: Fetish
The furry community also attracts furry related fetishists who warm to the non-condemning atmosphere and the ability to express fantasies of a sexual nature that would rarely be tolerated anywhere else.

Surveys place the number of extreme fetishists in the community at a comparatively low percentage, though the few there are tend to be extremely visible on the net.

Creativity beyond the furry genre
Some creative members of the community create works that are not furry of nature. 2, The Ranting Gryphon creates rants on real world politics and the state of human society. Joe Strike has written film reviews for the New York Daily News. Steven F. Scharff maintains a database on new country projects, "micronations" and independence and sedition movements. A number of furry musical groups produce music without furry subject matter. Some furry online radio stations play popular music that rarely has furry subject matter. And some amateur film makers in the fandom create films that have no visible furry themes.

This sometimes brings the community unexpected positive attention, though it further confuses people as to just what the furry fandom is supposed to be about.

Furry controversies
Defining the genre
: See article: What is Furry?
Historically, very little has been written about the concept of furry as a genre of entertainment. And the community itself sometimes has difficulty getting a grip on what the main object of the fandom is supposed to be. Consequently, some prominent members of the community may express ideas of limitation based on their personal taste in anthropomorphics. Others may feel that their taste in anthropomorphics are excluded by such limitations.

There are no written rules as to what types or levels of human and animal attributes are necessary for inclusion in the genre. The only noticeable defining factor seems to be that there be some kind of combination of the two. Thus, it is best to approach the genre with the broadest possible view, rather than being influenced by individuals expressing dissatisfaction with areas of the furry arts they personally don’t like.

Misinformation
Many people misunderstand the fandom due to a lack of non-prejudicial information being available. In many cases, the first things outsiders see of the fandom is sensationalistic fiction on TV shows. Others may take note of the adult themed art on the net and assume this is the whole point of the fandom.

Sexuality
The free atmosphere of acceptance in the furry community makes it far more likely for members to be open about their sexual preferences. As such, most non-furries believe that nearly all furry fans are gay. Recent surveys suggest that the percentage of homosexuals and bisexuals in the fandom may be higher than in the general population. Furries have proposed various theories for this.

Confessions of more unusual sexuality and lifestyle have also been noted in the furry community, and though the majority of furry fans will attempt to be tolerant, certain sexual practices will stretch the tolerance of certain furry fans to the breaking point.

In particular, discussion of bestiality is a trigger for angry debate within the community. Many insist that absolute tolerance must be absolute, while others resent the association of the fandom with a practice that is not only illegal in many places, but is considered by many to be a form of animal abuse. Because of these two hallmarks of the current fandom — tolerance and the protection of real life animals — acceptance of bestialitists is a hotly contested topic of the furry community.

Another practice that sparks controversy from within the fandom itself is plushophilia. Though plushophilia is physically harmless, being confronted with it causes extreme reactions on both sides of the issue within the fandom — from total acceptance to outright disgust.

Erotic furry art
: See article: Furotica
If one looks on games like Star Fox and movies like Over The Hedge as the main furry genre, and the erotic art coming out of the community as a parody of the main genre, a direct parallel to anime and hentai can be seen as well as a parallel with the general fantasy genre and erotic fantasy art. Types of hentai might straddle both furry and non-furry genre. The major difference is that the output of furry titles by major companies is relatively small when compared to the output of other genres.

Thus it is easy to mistake the mature art aspect of furry fandom for being more prominent than in other fandoms. When, in reality, the amount of erotic content coming out of the furry community pales in comparison to the anime/manga erotic output, which is much better organized and even supported by the main industry.

Anime fans enjoy the availability of endless hours of erotic animation created by professional companies, and even the erotic manga comics created by anime fans display a level of professionalism that furry artists can not even begin to aspire to. Yet, this tends to not be a problem for anime fandom, as the high output of non-erotic anime keeps the erotic subgenre in perspective as parody. While with furry fandom, it is highly likely that the first output of the fandom an outsider will see will be something of an erotic nature or sexual humor art.

Fringe segments of the community
Just about anyone with any kind of interest that can somehow be tied to furry can set up a new neighborhood in the furry community for that interest. For some reason, the furries who create these neighborhoods have a tendency to give them names that sound worse than the actual intent, and thus may generate prejudice or attract the wrong kind of attention.

* Babyfurs are interested in furry child characters.
* Nazi Furs are interested in furry World War 2 characters.

: See article: Anti-furries
Furry hate groups have been created that ridicule the fandom at every opportunity and continue the spread of various types of misinformation, largely based on overplaying activities that exist in the fringe areas of the community and have no direct relationship to the fandom.

It is the general assertion of fans that these hate groups are mistaken in their assumption that furry fandom is all about sexualizing animal characters and animal related fetishes. It has also been confessed by certain furry haters that they attack furry fandom, not out of any belief that the furry fandom is any worse than other fandoms in these respects, but rather because it is much easier to get an entertaining reaction out of furries than it is to get a reaction out of Trekkies or Otaku.

Thus, the anti-furry movement exists largely for entertainment value and should be taken with a grain of salt. Furries may even be seen to play along with furry hate groups, as some furries insist that it is important to maintain a sense of humor about such things. Indeed, there is hardly a fandom in existence that does not parody and laugh at its own idiosyncrasies and stereotypes.

Self criticism
The furry community also is sometimes criticized by its own for being too tolerant of various things, especially the over visibility of controversial fetishes.

Particularly for those who are only in the community because of an interest in furry cartoons, it may be found painful that the community feels free to associate them with things that seem completely unrelated to a fandom for furry characters.

Other furries will then turn on those who claim not to want to be associated with every controversial element in the community and accuse them of being a detriment to the stability of the community, often accompanied with accusations of Nazi behavior or being a Burned Fur.

Over the years many furries have left the fandom in a state of grief over such controversies and disputes.

Unsympathetic media
: See article: Timeline of media coverage

In years past, the only value the mainstream media has seen in furry fandom has been over emphasis on the fetishists and lifestylers within the community. Many of those who were interviewed for such media portrayals claim they were deliberately misquoted. As a result, misunderstanding of the nature of the fandom has been widespread. However, this appears to be changing, as less sensational media sources are starting to take note of the community, which are more inclined to see interest in the fandom aspect.

Furry politics
As with any type of community, even a virtual one, political issues will arise and certain people will champion them, attempting to attain a measure of power and control over the rest of the community. However, the community is seldom able to be united on any single issue. And most attempts to force change fall flat.

Political topics in the community can revolve around pushing tolerance for controversial segments of the community, people trying to put limits on the genre celebrated by the fandom, and those who wish to completely separate the furry community from any relationship with the mainstream entertainment industry.

A typical example of furry politics is the attempt to draw a distinction between a "furry comic" created by self professed members of the fandom, and a traditional "funny animal comic," created by someone who has not acknowledged a connection to the fandom. This type of political ploy may cause a lot of heated debate, but in the end there is no artistic difference between the two, and furry fans rarely stop to ask an artist’s affiliations before enjoying his work.

Roomies is a webcomic created and drawn by Dan Canaan. It features his own character Flinthoof Ponypal, or "Flinters" as he is also known, and a full cast of recurring characters.

Roomies was introduced in May 1999 and delved immediately into the somewhat-freakish sitcom existence of Flinters, room mate Tibo the tiger, their megalomaniac computer, their pet ferrets, and others.

In March, 2008, the author officially announced his intention to close the strip for good, once there are enough to justify a fourth book edition of Roomies. The total number of individual comic strips will be 1200. In its place he will be doing a darker comic, "Scavengers."

The final strip was uploaded on November 21st, 2008. A month later the artist posted confirmation that he is done writing the comic and will move on to Scavengers which is tentatively slated to start in January of 2009 . The final strips have relocated all of the main cast to Mars.

Doodles (aka Steve Gattuso) is a furry goon whose fursona is an anthropomorphic rabbit. He was Dealer Staff Lead at Confurence 8 and 9. He is well-known in the furry fandom and is a regular poster on the Something Awful forums. One of his more popular contributions to the forums was The Furdomicon, which detailed history throughout furry. Doodles is a rabbit breeder in his spare time and has seven different breeds of Fancy Lop.

The name is derived from the character Doodles the Great which appeared in the first issue of The Adventures of Captain Jack circa 1985. This character was in turn meant to be a homage to the late Doodles Weaver, a member of Spike Jones's band, The City Slickers.

The Adventures of Captain Jack

The Adventures of Captain Jack is a funny animal comic book created by animator Mike Kazaleh, and published by Fantagraphics Books. It about the misadventures of a shady private starship captain, and his misfit crew.

The series was enhanced by Kazelah's smooth, animation-influenced artwork, reminiscent in style to that of Chuck Jones.

It has been collected as The Collected Captain Jack and More Collected Adventures of Captain Jack, both from MU Press.

Plot-lines
The crew's adventures have included encounters with a crazy wizard and his giant pinball machine, the farm planet of Janet's father, Herman's near-death experience (where God is shown to actually be the almighty dollar), the attempted rescue of lost astronaut Stanley Tomcat (who doesn't want to be rescued), a planet of TV-hating housewives, and more.

Cast
The comic's characters include Captain Jack, the self-assured, gray-furred cat captain of the starship Glass Onion; Herman Feldman, crewmember dog (who actually likes "space food"); Beezlebub (sic), Herman's tiny, demonic sidekick (who is invisible to the rest of the cast); and Adam Fink, an android dog who usually gets stuck with the heavy lifting. Later, they are joined by Janet (a raccoon), a farmer's daughter who falls in love with Herman, and vice versa.

Chuck Jones

Chuck Jones was a two-time Oscar-winning American animator, cartoon artist, screenwriter, producer, and director of animated films. Most furries know him for his work with Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies for Warner Bros. He directed many of the classic short animated cartoons starring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, the Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote, Pepé Le Pew and the other Warner characters. Of all these characters, Jones was responsible for the creation of Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote, as well as furry sex icon Pepé Le Pew. Up unitl his death in 2002, he never stopped cartooning and animating, his last work being the Thomas Timberwolf web cartoon. He was also responsible for the modern definitions of many classic Looney Tune characters. For example, Daffy Duck turned from a wacky, Clampett-esque hero Daffy Duck to a greedy, sneaky antagonist with a slow-burning temper. Chuck Jones was also responsible for directing many of the animated versions of some of Dr. Seuss's books, notably How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Jones is also famous for his work on Tom & Jerry cartoons in 1963 which carried varying degrees of critical success and was co-directed with Maurice Noble.

Jones is considered by many to be a master of characterization and timing. His best works are noted for depicting a refinement of character to the point that a single eyebrow wiggle could be a major gag as opposed to the wild, frenetic style usually associated with cartoons, and those of Warner Bros. in particular. Furry artists today like Candy Dewalt and SusanDeer both credit their artistic influence to be from Jones' unique style.

Azzarox the Bat is a bat furry, more specifically, a member of the species Pteropus poliocephalus (Grey-Headed Flying Fox). He resides in (State name withheld due to request), Australia.

He is bisexual, with no particular preference towards either gender, though he is not sexually interested in herms (He can never understand why, he doesn't seem to have a reason)

While Azzarox is generally a bat, he is also on occasion (incomplete list) a dragon, skunk, kangaroo, voltanian, gryphon or a husky (Second Life only)

He wears strong glasses to counter the near-blindness common to all bats.

Azzarox is often on Steam, and is often found in CC2iscool's server community. He occasionally plays TF2 in those servers, and often in others. However, he may not be on during later days of the month, due to the internet caps still applied in Australia.

Hi - I'm GreenReaper! You may remember me from such places as the Creatures Wiki, and Wikipedia.

I am the founder and lead administrator of WikiFur, so if you have any problems or questions, let me know!

Please understand that this site, like Wikipedia, runs by the consensus of its users, so sometimes it is necessary for me to ask them what they think before acting. I am not a GodKing, nor a Benevolent Dictator. I do try to lead, though - if only because someone has to take the flack! *grins*

I've identified as furry (originally scaly) since I was 17 or so - perhaps earlier - but I'm still relatively new to the community side of the furry fandom (although I've learnt a lot since I started here!). As a result, I can often avoid taking a position over contentious historical topics, as I don't know enough about it to join in! This works out quite nicely, as (in my view) the best way to make a good page is to let people argue about it until they figure out a version of the article that is equally distasteful, and I have more important things to be doing than argue. ;-)

I am a strong believer in the view that the furry fandom has a Manifest Destiny. I think that working together we can build the fandom into something that is truly great; a friendly, welcoming community of creative fans that stretches from sea to shining sea, and beyond. I believe that WikiFur is a step towards that goal, and I thank those of you who have decided to join us.

Portal of Evil

2008-12-16T18:55:45Z

Eulalia459678: Reverted edits by 80.90.160.194 (talk) to last version by ReaperBot

cleanup
Context
The Portal of Evil, PoE proper or simply PoE is a website that specializes in cataloging strange, shocking, or otherwise amusing web pages, and has been described as "the Yahoo! of the weird". PoE was founded and continues to be maintained by Chet (of Old Man Murray, currently an employee of Valve Software). The site also has several sister sites, including POE News, which specializes in odd and unusual news stories, and POEtv, a video repository portal with a similar slant (yet, all videos must remain 'Safe For Work'). Most sites on the PoE Network incorporate lively discussion forums.

Though the sites listed on POE range from religious extremism to sexual fetishes, the large number of furry fandom-related sites that have been listed on POE, along with the often harsh comments passed upon said sites in POE's forums, have caused it to be branded by some as an anti-furry site.

The Prime Directive
Contrary to popular belief, the great majority of PoE members do not organize attacks on the websites that are listed on PoE. Rule #1 of the PoE forum rules, also known as the Prime Directive (or PD for short), states: "Do not contact the site listed. Do not email the site owner. Do not post in their guestbooks. Do not post in their forums. If the site owners want to interact with visitors from PoE they can come to these forums." In other words, PoE members are to keep their criticisms of the site to the PoE forums, even if the site owners post to PoE of their own accord.

Occasionally, casual visitors to PoE will react to featured sites in a way that violates the Prime Directive, e.g. by privately contacting the site's owner, posting rude messages on the site's guestbook, or otherwise causing the owner to alter or even shut down his or her website. Sometimes this is done maliciously by people opposed to PoE, in a deliberate attempt to make the site and its members look bad; such behavior, as mentioned above, is against the forum rules, and people have been banned for this.

Furry Posters on PoE
Mostly, posters on Portal of Evil don't make direct contact with furries, due to the PD. However, furries often post to Portal of Evil for a variety of reasons, most often to defend either themselves or some aspect of the fandom. Furry webmasters also frequently visit the site, and many furry site forums on PoE have large post counts due to flamewars between furries and PoE regulars. The 2 forums are a good example.

A few regulars, however, are themselves furries. A few try to conceal the fact, for fear of ridicule from their fellow posters, while others manage to gain a large post count while still openly admitting their furriness. The reaction from the other forum posters tends to depend on the attitude the furry takes toward PoE.

A few notable furry PoE regulars include Wheelie McJesus, a furry who many at PoE regarded as a "good" furry; MyTanookiSuitHasBalls, a furry troll who has been banned from PoE multiple times; painterfox, a babyfur who occasionally lurks and shared the same college with crossaffliction, a Christian furry whose user forum was at one time the most posted to on PoE.

PoE had a long-standing Wikipedia article. This was deleted in April 2007 as "non-notable", but has been re-posted. It remains to be seen whether Wikipedia will also delete the restored article. Lee M was falsely accused of the original deletion, but was not in fact a Wikipedia administrator.

Shot King

2008-10-25T21:50:35Z

Eulalia459678: Reverted edits by Lemonparty (talk) to last version by Shot King

Shot King (b. February 13, 1986) is a gay blue dragon living in Laredo, Texas, U.S.A. While hes not known in any particalar area in the furry fandom and virtually unknown, he is slowly making a presence by offering advice and comments to any furry or friend in need.

Mini Biography
Shot King, real name Blake, was born in Galveston, Texas, the middle of 3 children. His father worked for the gas company Conco Phillips as a maintenance supervisor while his mother was a housewife. His fathers company relocates him around contestly across the site so Shot King didnt live in no location in Texas for no more then 2 or 3 years at a time until recently. He claims to have lived in Houston, Nacogdoches, San Antonio, Midland, and El Paso. Because of this, he has a fairly extensive knowledge about the culture and geography of Texas, something he takes pride in.

Throughout much of his life, Shot King grew up without parental guidance. This is due to that his mother died while he was growing up while his father worked a lot to support his children. While he had small acquaintances with others, he also wasn't liked a lot by his siblings or the kids at the various schools he went to. Combined with Asperger Syndrome that he was diagnosed with, he has difficulty making decisions, forming friendships with others, and coming up with new ideas, and multi-tasking which ultimately caused him to be really shy and reserved. Although he has improved over the years as he learns to combat these, he still acts in this manner today to some extent

Inspiration
Shot Kings association and amusement with furs came from many sources. He was fascinated with Anthropomorphic animals from many cartoons he spend watching throughout his childhood, ranging from classics such as Bugs Bunny, to cartoons new at his time such as Rockos Modern life. Part of this also came from his brother's hobby in fantasy where he learned of not just dragons but other reptilian creatures where he found them to be mystifying creatures. This took him up to read on a few series such as the Dragonlance books. Hes also a fan of the Koopa race and especially Bowser from the Super Mario Bros series. Later, when Pokemon hit the scene, He became further interested after seeing Chiazard and Dragonite which he states are his favorite pokemon.

Discovery
in 2003, not long after his family acquired the internet, Shot King joined the community of Lemmys Land, a site completely dedicated to Lemmy Koopa one of Bowser's children. He choose this site as its one of the few active sites deviated to Koopas which hes a big fan of. He did not submit much content, usually prefer hanging out in the forums chatting with fellow fans. In mid 2005, he quit the site and his mod board position after a dispute with a popular member and the main moderator on the boards, and he complained the site was being overrun by underage members.

In order to keep up with not only with the community and other fans outside of the site, but with Nintendo fans as well, he joined Deviantart. While there though, he slowly discovered other artists that had a obsession with anthropomorphic animals, something he had too but thought was non-existent. Some of these helped him open himself out and speak out. He also discovered certain fetishes such as fatness and vore which he still enjoys. While he still keeps in contact with his Nintendo fan friends, most of his account is devoted to the "other stuff". He joined Fur Affinity not too long ago to keep with other members that has since left DeviantART. even now he considers himself more of an admirer of the furry fandom than an active member, citing that he doesn't have the "creative touch".

Shot King, the dragon
Shot King created his Dragon character named after nick name, a blue dragon with a gold ring on his tail, after seeing many other members having at least one character. He mainly uses it for RP purposes but plans to develop him more although he has difficulty doing so.

Hobbies, personality, and misc information
Shot King enjoys movies, mainly of action, thriller adventure types and occasionally those of the sci fi and horror genres such as Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Back To The Future, and the James Bond series, and has a extensive DVD collection. He also likes to study nature, geography, and weather patterns. He also reads up on history and knows a good deal about life in the middle ages and plans to read up on other time periods. Shot King also enjoys video games, mainly from the older period as he feels newer games doesn't have addiction and special touch that older games once did. Although not a not huge fan, he enjoys some anime. He does draw from time to time, but mainly requests and commissions others for something he wants.

Although he may not appear to be the type, Shot King does suffer from consent depression and mood swings. He usually hides this as he does not want to appear to be emo. Shot King is described of being "kind, caring, and going out of the way for others, but slow and indecisive at times." His shyness keeps him from seeking companionship which he longs over.

Shot King considers himself gay although has been to known to act at least bi from time to time. He has an off and on love relationship with Joe Wolf, but while attending Anthrocon 2008, Joe Wolf dumped him in favoring over someone else, and ShotKing declared he would never be mate with him again after 3 attempts to be with him. He is currently seeking someone.

Today
Shot King currently lives with his father and is seeking to move out one day. He also plans to re attend college after he dropped out for over a year. He was recently seen at Anthrocon 2008, his first convention. Despite he had a highly positive reaction to it at first, it turned to mixed feelings as the con goes further.

Bloodshade Shadowclaw

2008-10-25T21:50:02Z

Eulalia459678: Reverted edits by Lemonparty (talk) to last version by AtteBot

Cleanup

Bloodshade Shadowclaw is a furry artist from the United States. He has 4 original series and around 45 characters. He is an avid fighting game fan and M.U.G.E.N player, and has a love for weaponry.

Bloodshade, or "Shadow-san" as he is known by close friends, often wonders what the furry fandom would be like if it didn't center so much on sex, and has plans to make this more than a vision.

His appearance is that of a human, or mundane, with a cat's ears and tail. He has dark shoulder-length hair, wears all or mostly black clothing, and red glasses. His artwork is anime-styled, with evident grounds in Dragon Ball Z. He may be regarded by some as otakukin.

He looks up to quite a few artists in the fandom, even going so far as to consider some an inspiration, including Shawntae Howard, Max Blackrabbit, Inuki, FoxxFire, and Dr. Comet, to name a few.

He is currently seeking College courses for Animation and Game Design.

Mark Allen's Pet Project

Mark Allen's Pet Project is a stand-up comedy show about furries, written and performed by British comedian Mark Allen. The show came about from Allen's attempts to understand the relationship between humans and animals. During his research, he learned about furries and decided to "infiltrate them."

Because of the wariness that most furries have with people outside the fandom, Allen bought himself a Dalmatian dog fursuit.

In his show, he talks about how he competed in a "Fursuit Olympics" and talks about, "learning about tolerance anew". His show also features film footage of his visits to furry activities.

Reception
Chortle.co.uk gave the show 3 out of 5 stars saying, "Though it's all wrapped up a little too pat, his ultimate comparison of the pet-owner relationship to a hostage situation is exceptionally well delivered."

Fest were more critical giving the show 2 out of 5 stars writing that, "Let's not be too harsh on Allen. He is a funny guy, who could handle traditional stand-up if he wanted. The question he has to ask himself is whether slideshow comedy is for him. For this type of show to work, its subject needs to be acutely observed, the transition between topics needs to be seamless, and there needs to be a constant stream of laugh out loud moments. Allen's presentation has none of this. His performance style is far too laid-back and sloppy. A disappointing show." It also pertains to an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or mythological or imaginary creatures which possess human or superhuman capabilities. The plural form of furry in all its contexts is furs or furries; the subjects of furry interest are also known as furries.

What it means to be furry
Someone who says they are furry is generally expressing an interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures.

Unfavorable attention from the media has created a negative stereotype of a furry. Contrary to how a Furry is portrayed in pop culture and mass media, how deep or meaningful an interest in Furry is varies greatly from person to person. Also, the breadth of a person's interest in the fandom, and what ultimately makes them furry, is specific to each individual. Below is a list of common interests with which a fur is likely to identify. A furry may be interested in any or all of them, to any degree.

Someone claiming to be furry would also be part of the furry fandom.

Furry's gamut of interests
Cartoons and games
Interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or creatures can be as simple as the many popular furry cartoon characters, known as funny animals. These may include Bugs Bunny, Tony the Tiger, Sly Cooper, Star Fox, etc. However, someone who merely happens to like these characters is not necessarily a furry; the degree and nature of one's interest is relevant here.

Spirituality
[[Image:Postsecret.jpg|thumb|175px|A postcard sent into PostSecret depicting a fur's interest in becoming her fursona.]]
Some furs believe they have a spiritual connection to a particular animal which is typically their fursona, but also may be a totem. Strong spiritual believers may often say that they are "an animal in a human body" (and in fact may identify themselves as Otherkin, Weres and/or Therians which are their own categories and not linked to the furry fandom just by interest). Some Otherkin, Weres and/or Therians join and find the furry fandom to be a place to be themselves as most Otherkin, Weres and/or Therians are underground and the furry fandom is more open to the world.

Art and creativity
Some furs may be interested only in the creative aspects of the furry fandom. Furry content, both online and off, is easy to obtain, and available in vast amounts, and furs produce new works regularly. Furry artwork is also done by many nonfurries as well in targeting the fandom. Others may disassociate themselves from the fandom and refer to themselves as funny animal artists. Furries may also enjoy role-playing a particular furry character or fursona, sometimes writing about this character or recording their online interactions for posterity.

Fursuiting
A relatively uncommon practice among furries is to dress up in a costume that is typically designed after a fursona. These "fursuits" are usually worn at conventions, and a few are even designed to accommodate sexual situations. Some furries opt to wear a "partial" suit, consisting of a head, tail, and paws, instead of a full fursuit; others may just wear a tail or various other pieces.

Sexuality
To some furs, the sexual attraction to anthropomorphic animals is a part of what makes them furry. This is a topic of much controversy, as it has been the subject of early media attention (such as that from Wired Magazine and Vanity Fair), leading to its becoming a common conception of furry community at large. This has spawned a few groups in response (such as the Burned Furs) with a desire to discourage this angle, or create a clear distinction between these furries and the rest of the community.

Other contexts of Furry
From within the fandom, anything classified as an anthropomorphic animal and/or creature could be called a furry. That could be anything from Scooby Doo to various sports mascots to Omaha the Cat Dancer. Since mainstream characters are generally not created with furries in mind, the furry context is presumed by most outsiders to not be present despite subcultural interest.

Any art showcasing anthropomorphic animals is generally considered furry artwork. Artwork that contains furries in sexual situations may be called yiff or spooge art.

Non-furry furries
Anthropomorphic creatures that are also considered to be furry (even with the lack of pelt or fur) include (but are not limited to): dragons and lizards (also known as scalies and herps, respectively,) Cetaceans (dolphins and Orcas,) birds and gryphons (also known as featheries or avians,) and taurs (centaurs being the prime example.)

Talk:Post-con depression

Medical terminology
Curious question? Is there an actual medical term for this? If so, can we document it here?--Kendricks Redtail 21:03, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
:This may occur but it's not a medical term, I'm almost 100 percent certain. Unless we, or preferably, whoever created this article, can come up with some kind of documentation of usage in the fandom, it should be spd'd. Simba B 21:30, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
::I've only been to one con so far, and I've already heard it used. I vote against any deletion of this article. Spaz Kitty 21:33, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
:::I second Spaz's vote. I'm just saying that what we descrive as PCD is known elsewhere in the medical world, but as what?--Kendricks Redtail 21:36, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
::::I don't know that it's known as anything other than just depression. I doubt it's any kind of discrete medical phenomena. Simba B 21:38, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
:::Indeed. And a Google search turns up 9,300 hits. That's good enough for me. Simba B 21:38, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
:As far as I can unearth, the closest that I can find is postpartum depression (but we're not having babies, are we?) and seperation anxiety disorder. The latter seems to be more consistent with how we describe it. A psychology student friend of mine theorizes that it may be an oversimplified version of bipolar. Extreme highs, followed by a low. Thoughts?--Kendricks Redtail 22:06, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

::I have seen a term similar to it, but I can't recall it at this moment,... But we do have Con Crud, an often used term for the post convention "blahs" and illnesses Spirou 23:19, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Mission and content
WikiFur's stated mission is to "record information of use to the furry community", in an attempt to distribute it to others. This mission has been widely interpreted, and WikiFur contains articles on art, literature and other forms of culture both created by and of interest to members of the furry fandom, as well as the people and characters within it, their history and interests, the worlds they inhabit, news on events of current interest, and much more besides. It can also offer a good introduction to the fandom, although Wikipedia's article is considered by WikiFur's founder to remain the best single page on the topic.

Motives for contributors vary. There are those who simply enjoy collecting and organizing information on anthropomorphic topics. Many are fans of particular topics and wish to help write "the definitive article" on it. Some see WikiFur as a means of "getting the truth out" about contentious subjects like the Babyfur community, while others value it as a source of information which, while not completely without bias, is at least subject to an element of peer review and modification.

Audience and impact
WikiFur did not spring up overnight, but it only took three weeks for it to be featured on Something Awful. It was selected by Wikia as Featured Wikicity in December 2005.. As of September 2006, WikiFur receives 2000 to 2500 visitors and 15,000 to 20,000 pageviews per day (Google Analytics figures). Around 4000 edits are made per month, with around 75 contributors making five or more edits, and eight or nine contributors making 100 or more edits (Wikia figures). Roughly ten articles are created a day, excluding articles that are later deleted.

WikiFur's actual impact is harder to judge. Certainly, it has been referenced by others, both within and without the fandom, including Animal Passions, an article on Anthrocon 2006 published in the Pittsburgh City Paper. Some have mentioned that WikiFur was the source of information leading them to attend a convention. It has been linked to by several popular sites, including Crush! Yiff! Destroy!, Fur Affinity, PeterCat's Furry Infopages, Rabbit Valley, Yiffstar and Califur's website. The site has an international reputation, with links from Dutchfurs, FranFurence, Furbase.de and Furry.it, as well as a partner agreement with TurriWiki and visitors and contributors from every continent.

Promotional activities and advertising
WikiFur has engaged in various methods of promotion and advertising, the latter being paid for by site supporters. Promotion usually focusses on two goals: increasing readership, and attracting new editors. Emphasis is often made of WikiFur's size, both in terms of articles and audience, and of the importance of its mission. Methods of promotion have included conbadge-like business cards, flyers, ribbons, and posts and comments on news sites, forum and LiveJournals, along with paid conbook advertising and Google AdWords coverage.

Controversy
As a popular fandom site with avenues of discussion, WikiFur has its share of controversy.

Concern over mission and misuse
A few people worry that WikiFur provides a perfect source of information for trolls, furry-bashers, and others who delight in pointing out certain aspects of the fandom. WikiFur does contain information that confuse or disgust some people, and it has been linked to by websites that seek to highlight such information to promote stereotypes of the fandom, though so far the effect has not been particularly significant.

There is also concern that WikiFur may be co-opted by such people to push their point of view in the name of neutrality - this was highlighted when an Encyclopedia Dramatica user was found to be editing the same articles on WikiFur and on ED at the same time.

Removal of information
As of September 2006, roughly one article in three on WikiFur is about a person. Contributors are encouraged to make articles about themselves and other members of the furry fandom, as well as those who do not consider themselves members but who are related in some way. This sometimes leads to problems, especially when it turns out that the people concerned do not want information about them at WikiFur, and has led to the development of a personal information policy that is under continued review.

One of WikiFur's objectives is to do no harm to past or present members of the fandom. Some contributors and non-contributors feel strongly that people have a "moral right to privacy", and this has compelled removal of factually correct information from articles in some cases. At the same time, there are those who consider it to have a moral duty duty to other members of the fandom to preserve history, especially when they believe there is an unstated reason to remove it. Balancing the two views is not always easy, and has led to heated discussion and criticism of WikiFur from both sides - the former calling it a "stalker's heaven" while the latter accusing it of compromising its mission or "playing favorites" (as there are no absolute rules about what information may be removed).

Several people have proposed a legal right to privacy, but so far have failed to come up with any relevant laws when challenged to do so. The use of legal threats has not helped the case of those requesting a removal.

Exclusion of a person from WikiFur (as authorized by the consensus of the community) is typically implemented through locking the page about them with a short message. It is also possible to for administrators to implement a limited editing system, such that only administrators and the person concerned may edit an article.

Examples
* Non-notable artists and other fans are usually removed on request without comment, although some have been convinced to watch the page or to turn the page into a personally-controllable page
* Notable people, including some "famous" artists, entertainers and members of the fandom who have caused controversy are opened to debate, and in some cases certain information is moved to relevant pages before exclusion is applied
* Extremely notable people are unlikely to receive full exclusion of the page about them, though some particularly decidedly personal information may be removed
* A person's real name and location is usually allowed to be removed without question, although there are cases in which even this has not been granted even after debate (the prime example of this is Sibe)
* Removal of a person's name from an article that is not specifically about them is generally only permitted if their identity is not important - for example, the name of a person who bought a painting for $10,000 at auction was not considered important since the issue was the price of the painting
* Articles about comics and other public works are not subject for removal even if the author requests it, as they are not "personal information" - some artists have contended that their work is "not furry", but as they are on WikiFur because they are of interest to furry fans, this is not considered a valid reason either

Bias
There is an ever-present danger of bias on WikiFur. The most notable bias is due to the fact that most editors (and all of the most dedicated members) are members of the furry fandom, and the majority are likely to have a positive opinion of it. This can lead to accusations that articles are biased towards the furry fandom's position - and sometimes these accusations are accurate.

There is also little to stop people adding overly-positive information about things they like, or overly-negative (sometimes even downright malicious) information about things they do not like. Such information may or may not be removed by others when it is added; either way, it can cause controversy. Arguments are typically solved by removal of unsourced information, the provision of references, or (in the case of opinion) specific attribution of statements. Sometimes it is suggested that the relative proportions of content that is present in an article may itself put the topic in a false light - the usual answer to this is to suggest that the person complaining about it fix it by adding other relevant information.

Some people believe WikiFur can never be a reliable source of information. Despite this, WikiFur is perceived by some to be a more reliable source than others on contentious topics that it covers, and it has been praised for its attempts to provide useful information while avoiding bias.<ref name="barona">Comment on the use of WikiFur by [[Chris F. === Vandalism ===

Like many furry forums and sites which allow comments, WikiFur has its share of vandals. However, since it is a simple matter to return to a previous state, most vandalism is reverted within minutes. The members of 4chan's /b/ board took particular interest in the site, and regularly organized raids until August 2006.

Despite multiple attempts, no vandalism since Something Awful from any source has succeeded in disrupting WikiFur for more than a few hours - the worst case was a sophisticated account-registering bot that used the Tor proxy system, which has since been blocked.

Timeline
* July 23, 2005: Conceived by GreenReaper when creating a Wikipedia article on The Blind Pig.
* July 24, 2005: WikiFur founded on Wikia.
* July 31, 2005: The first content pages began to appear.
* August 4, 2005: GreenReaper wrote WikiFur - a home for the furry community on the talk page of Wikipedia's furry fandom page. Surprisingly (considering previous edits), there was no discussion, but a few people did join as a result.
* August 13, 2005: With editing totaling around 50 pages, WikiFur was promoted with GreenReaper's I Have a Dream message, cross-posted to several LiveJournal communities (it was, perhaps appropriately, deleted from Yerf's ;-). In a deserved burst of bad karma, the server went down and stayed down for hours.
* August 14, 2005: Trolling began, led by users from the fursecution LJ community and Encyclopedia Dramatica.
* August 15, 2005: Shortly after midnight UK DST (or 19:00 EDT the day before), AshMCairo posted about WikiFur on the Something Awful forum. WikiFur was subsequently selected for the dubious honor of Awful Link of the Day:
:It should come as no surprise, but in case you were wondering: "yes". Yes, there is a Wiki for furries. Don't spam it up, if only out of respect for the wikipedia ideal.
As a result, a mass of users hit the WikiFur servers. At the peak one edit was made every 45 seconds.
:At first we thought it was just an extension of the previous trolling, but as I tried to record the IPs and figure out some sort of pattern, I saw they were all over the place. Our next thought was proxies, but even then, there were just too many edits. Finally a vandal posted the URL while making an edit, and so we found out exactly what happened. Then we got chosen as Awful Link of the Day . . .
:I drafted several sysops from those trying to revert the edits, and we slowly beat back the tide. By about 14:00 EDT we had a reasonable handle on things, although edits were still coming thick and fast. Ironically, it probably helped us far more than it hurt, considering how many users it brought into the site, but it was hectic at the time! --GreenReaper
*August 20, 2005: Within the first week of openly promoting WikiFur, it had grown 32 times over, and there were over 1600 pages and 646 full articles on the site. Statistically, there was a new edit every 2 minutes, and a new page added every 20 minutes.
*August 21, 2005: A WikiFur article was created on Wikipedia by an anonymous user, and almost immediately submitted to Votes for Deletion on grounds of non-notability. Nobody actually at WikiFur heard about this until later in the week. The majority of votes (including those by WikiFur admins) were for delete, due to unproven notability.
*August 23, 2005: Passed 750 article pages.
*August 25, 2005: Passed 850 article pages and 10000 edits.
*August 28, 2005: Passed 1000 articles pages in the early hours of the morning, minor celebrations are held.
