'''e621''', also known as '''e6''', is a [[adult|mature]] [[image board]] replacement for the image board [[Sidechan]]. A [[W:general audience|general audience]] image board, '''e926''' (formerly e961) complements this site. e621 runs off of the Ouroboros platform, a [[W:Imageboard#Danbooru-style_boards|danbooru]]-style software specifically designed for the site. It is likely that the site is named for the compound [[W:Monosodium glutamate|monosodium glutamate]], whose [[W:E number|E Number]] is E621.

== History ==

* September 17, 2007 - The site was closed down, citing on its front-page that claims had been made against the site for hosting [[Wikipedia:child pornography|child pornography]] and only the [[Oekaki]] board and the [[IRC]] channel remained active.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20070917160028/http://e621.net/ e621 offline notice] - Archived by Wayback Machine, Sep 17, 2007.</ref>
* November 26, 2007 - e621 became active again, under the banner e621 2.0. It was forced offline for a few days over Christmas 2007 during the same [[Wikipedia:Distributed Denial of Service|DDoS]] attack that struck [[Fur Affinity]] and [[Fchan]].
* August 2010 - The website ended its operations briefly due to [[David Ross]] ('''Insane Kangaroo'''), lodging accusations of child pornography and copyright infringement with the principle hosting company.<ref name="Takedown Request">{{cite web|author=[[Arcturus]]|url=https://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd366/HDSham/Screenshot2010-08-30at105324PM.png|title=Takedown Request Screenshot|website=e621|date=August 30, 2010|accessdate=August 31, 2010}}</ref> The site was formally shut down when he threatened [[Arcturus]] with deportation. The site returned to normal operation under a new owner on September 8, 2010.
* August 30, 2010 - The website's main page was replaced with a small note saying that e621 would be permanently shut down due to "numerous threats to our host, false claims of illegal content, harassment and a few things that are much worse."<ref name="Takedown Request"/> This time, only the IRC channel remained active.<ref>{{cite web|author=[[Arcturus]]|url=https://www.e621.net/|title=e621 is over. sorry.|website=e621|date=August 31, 2010|accessdate=August 31, 2010}}</ref>
* August 31, 2010 - It was announced that the site will simply be resuming with a new admin, Varka, after a short downtime.{{fact}} Announced changes to the site include an updated takedown policy to amend some of the issues leading to the threats issued in previous days.{{fact}}
* September 1, 2010 - A website by the same name has appeared in the guise of Adobe Flash Media Server 3.5, as confusing as this is, both are different only due to the WWW prefix. That, or the old one was absolved by Adobe, while the new one is using the WWW prefix. Anonymous of Jacksonville says e621 simply has a messed up DNS record for the base domain, but the WWW subdomain is still correctly configured. Either the record's TTL hasn't yet expired (in the case of hacking or hostile takeover, this is a good thing) or someone somewhere has made a silly mistake. (When the site is typed in with, and without WWW it goes to Varka's page, the site itself depending how you reach it will send you to either by a 50/50 chance, it's easier to just put in WWW with it.) (needs update).
* September 8, 2010 - The website was passed from Arcturus to Varka. Varka has implemented a newer, more artist-friendly takedown policy. There will also be more artist involvement that includes obtaining prints from Inkbunny and going to the artist's chosen website for commissions.<ref name="forum8456">{{cite web|author=[[Varka]]|url=https://e621.net/forum/show/8456|title=ANNOUNCEMENT: e621 changeover, new policy, next steps|website=e621|date=September 10, 2010|accessdate=September 23, 2010}}</ref>
* January 18, 2012 - e621 joined many other sites in protesting the [[W:PROTECT IP Act|PROTECT IP Act]] (PIPA) and [[W:SOPA|Stop Online Piracy Act]] (SOPA), by taking down its page and replacing it with the page that stated for others to write to their congressmen, being entirely generated by user content, e621 was a high risk target under the SOPA legislation, and took the site down with others for the protest.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20120118152135/http://e621.net/ "What? * February 2014 - The site hosts over four hundred thousand active posts ranging from non-[[sexual]] images to extreme [[paraphilia|fetishes]],{{fact}} with more than sixty-thousand users.{{fact}}
* August 18, 2014 - The site hosts over 450,000 active posts with over 140,000 users.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20140818093004/https://e621.net/stats e621 Stats] - Retrieved via the [https://web.archive.org/ Internet Wayback Machine], April 28, 2017.</ref>

* October 24, 2019 - Admin and lead programmer [[KiraNoot]] announces a new version of e621 that has been in the works for months and [https://beta.e621.net a beta version of the new site] is available to use for stress testing.<ref>{{cite web|author=[[KiraNoot|Kira]]|url=https://e621.net/forum/show/279936|title=Introducing the e621 Beta Site|website=e621|date=October 24, 2019|accessdate=October 24, 2019}}</ref> The new version uses a more modern platform modeled after the current version of Danbooru.
* February 12, 2020 - Lead admin NotMeNotYou announces that the new version of e621 is nearing completion. The new version would include a new "Lore" tag category (which includes "canonical" gender identities) and the ability to search up to 40 tags at once.<ref name="new e6 near-complete">{{cite web|author=[[NotMeNotYou]]|url=https://e621.net/forum/show/283533|title=<nowiki>[Beta]</nowiki> The new e621 is nearing completion|website=e621|date=February 12, 2020|accessdate=February 13, 2020}}</ref>
* March 5, 2020 - The new version of e621 leaves beta and replaces the old site.

== Policies and content ==

e621 makes use of a [[DNP]] list, and takedown requests are honored when following the guidelines of the Takedown page (https://e621.net/static/takedown). Images that are removed are also blacklisted to prevent posting.

Registration requests for inclusion on the site by artists and users might or might not be moderated by e621's staff, depending on the amount of spammers or trolls they are being hit with.

Uploading of photographic child pornography or bestiality media is not permitted, and uploading of images from pay-sites is discouraged, with the exception of a few images (usually for publicity purposes).

Additionally, any post could be deleted without notice if they fail to meet a standard of quality as determined by the moderators (poorly drawn or badly compressed art), though this is uncommon.

Regarding post tagging, the site uses a "tag-what-you-see" (TWYS) tagging system where posts are tagged based on what is visible in the images and animations. (https://e621.net/wiki/show/twys) Although this system is seen as highly effective for searching and blacklisting, it has caused several conflicts between the site's administration and a number of its user base and various posts' artists, primarily regarding the tagging of genders. The site features a page on its wiki specifying how they tag genders. (https://e621.net/wiki/show/howto:tag_genders) Despite said page featuring a disclaimer stating that the site's gender tagging system is only for the purposes of searches and blacklists, "''Not and '''Never''''' for describing the character" (i.e. not as a personal labeling system), this policy has nevertheless led to a number of artists requesting DNP status{{cn}} solely out of a refusal to accept the site's tagging policies. Eventually, it was announced on February 12, 2020 that the new version of the site would include the introduction of a new "lore" tags category to complement the TWYS system, including canonical (i.e. by what the artist or copyright owner says) gender identity tags.<ref name="new e6 near-complete"/> However, "Lore" tags will be a locked tag category; only administrators would be able to add tags to the "lore" category after they sanction them first.<ref name="new e6 near-complete"/> Nevertheless, the site's TWYS, gender tagging, and "minimum quality standards" policies have led to continued criticism among several artists and members of the site (former and current).{{cn}}

On June 22, 2019, after having received several complaints about the vulgar terms "dickgirl" and "cuntboy" as gender tags over time, head admin NotMeNotYou announced that the tags would be aliased to less vulgar terms "gynomorph" and "andromorph". Other tags that incorporate the two vulgar terms would also be aliased to use the less vulgar terms.<ref name="forum274480">{{cite web|author=[[NotMeNotYou]]|url=https://e621.net/forum/show/274480|title={{!(}}Announcement{{!)}} Making our gender tags less vulgar|website=e621|date=June 22, 2019|accessdate=June 22, 2019}}</ref>

On July 12, 2024, explicit art involving young humans and human-like characters have been banned sitewide and can no longer be posted to e621. The policy change was announced the same day by head admin NotMeNotYou, and over 45,000 posts were taken down as a result.<ref name="Flayrah explicit young human ban">{{cite web|author=GreenReaper (Parry, Lawrence)|url=https://www.flayrah.com/9198/e621-bans-explicit-young-human-and-human-content|title=e621 bans "explicit young human and human-like content"|website=Flayrah|date=July 13, 2024}}</ref>

== Mascot ==
[[File:Small_Esix_Keishinkae.png|175px|thumb|Esix, one of the site's mascots. Esix was in the top spot in the site redesign planned for 2010.]]
e621 has two [[mascot]]s, both of them being [[feline]] [[character]]s; '''[https://e621.net/wiki/show/hexerade Hexerade]''' and '''[https://e621.net/wiki/show/esix Esix]'''.

=== Controversy ===

Early in 2010, the owners of e621 were looking for a mascot to adorn the site. After asking the site's users to come up with their own ideas, a poll was opened to decide on which character should be selected. However, a few weeks afterward the poll was closed prematurely as it came to light that one of the contestants had been rigging the contest by signing up many alts through proxies to vote his mascot up.{{cn}}

In response to this, the administrators announced that they would select a mascot among themselves. After deliberation, they selected a five character mascot team from the leaders of the poll, featuring characters by [[Mellis]], [[Chizi]], [[Keishinkae]], [[Darkdoomer]] and [[Manafox]].<ref name="Mascot">{{cite web|author=[[Arcturus]]|url=https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1261051/|title=Mascot Contest Over, Winners Announced!|website=FurAffinity|date=2010|accessdate=8 Jul 2010|url-status=dead}}</ref>

== e961/e926 ==

In July 2009, a work-safe counterpart, e961.net, was brought online. The site was named after the E number of the then-new artificial sweetener, [[W:neotame|Neotame]]. Unfortunately, in November 2009 it was aliased to the original site due to traffic issues caused by the popularity of e621.<ref name="e961 forum565">{{cite web|author=[[Arcturus]]|url=https://e621.net/forum/show/565|title=At work? Nosy family? No problems!|website=e621|date=July 14, 2009|accessdate=November 8, 2009}}</ref> However, users who want to view only safe for work content can use the "rating:safe" tag to exclude all mature content from e621, except banner adverts which will still include adult content. Images can also be filtered by placing ratings (i.e., rating:explicit) on the tag blacklist.

In November 2012, e961 was rebuilt as ''e926'', a joke for it being a "bleached" version of the site, was reinstated along with updates to the main site. It displays content from e621 that strictly has a "Safe" rating. The site's login system shares e621's login database and servers, but requires a separate login, as it has its own cookies. Notably, it also has its own "safe for work" advertising. However, like the main e621 domain, users under 18 years of age are not allowed to visit e926, due to the aforementioned shared database and servers.

== Policies and content ==

e621 makes use of a [[DNP]] list, and takedown requests are honored when following the guidelines of the Takedown page (https://e621.net/static/takedown).

Regarding post tagging, the site uses a "tag-what-you-see" (TWYS) tagging system where posts are tagged based on what is visible in the images and animations. (https://e621.net/wiki/show/twys) Although this system is seen as highly effective for searching and blacklisting, it has caused several conflicts between the site's administration and a number of its user base and various posts' artists, primarily regarding the tagging of genders. The site features a page on its wiki specifying how they tag genders. (https://e621.net/wiki/show/howto:tag_genders) Despite said page featuring a disclaimer stating that the site's gender tagging system is only for the purposes of searches and blacklists, "''Not and '''Never''''' for describing the character" (i.e. not as a personal labeling system), this policy has nevertheless led to a number of artists requesting DNP status{{cn}} solely out of a refusal to accept the site's tagging policies. Eventually, it was announced on February 12, 2020 that the new version of the site would include the introduction of a new "lore" tags category to complement the TWYS system, including canonical (i.e. by what the artist or copyright owner says) gender identity tags.<ref name="new e6 near-complete"/> However, "Lore" tags will be a locked tag category; only administrators would be able to add tags to the "lore" category after they sanction them first.<ref name="new e6 near-complete"/> Nevertheless, the site's TWYS, gender tagging, and "minimum quality standards" policies have led to continued criticism among several artists and members of the site (former and current).{{cn}}

Early in 2010, the owners of e621 were looking for a mascot to adorn the site. However, a few weeks afterward the poll was closed prematurely as it came to light that one of the contestants had been rigging the contest by signing up many alts through proxies to vote his mascot up.{{cn}}

'''F-list''' (short for '''Fetish-list''') is a directory of characters, and [[wikipedia:Paraphilia|paraphilias]] associated with them, for the purposes of [[roleplay]]. It allows users that are eighteen or older to list multiple characters for each account, talk in groups relevant to their interests, and chat in real time through the site's chat server for the purpose of roleplay. Founded on July 2, 2009 by [[Hexxy]], F-list has been a central roleplay hub for non-furries since its inception, and many people mistake 'F-list' for 'Furry-List' which it is not, and continues to be a popular spot for roleplay, general conversation, and meeting people with shared interests, both sexual and non-sexual. It is owned by Dragonfruit Ventures, a subsidiary of [[Bad Dragon]].

== Format ==
F-list is formatted as a list-based database of characters. Each member can register multiple characters to their profile,<ref>https://wiki.f-list.net/Getting_started#F-list.2C_what_is_it.3F "Accounts are free to make 'character' pages..."</ref> and each character is assigned its own list of "kinks" divided into four categories: "Fave", "Yes", "Maybe", and "No". Each of these categories represents a different level of how much a character enjoys a certain kink.

Upon creating a character, the user is given an expansive list of "kinks", or paraphilias, to choose from, and is prompted to sort them into one of the four categories for their public profile, or to leave them blank to exclude them altogether. As well as a large number of predetermined kinks available for selection, all members are allotted 500 "custom kinks", which allow for the input of custom interests which may not otherwise be available for selection already.<ref>https://wiki.f-list.net/Getting_started#Filling_Out_a_Profile "Consider creative usage of custom kinks and subfetishes to make your intentions clearer."</ref> Subscribers, or members who donate to the site for its server upkeep and other expenses, are not limited in the amount of custom kinks they may add to their characters' public profiles.<ref>http://f-list.net "... lifting of account limitations (custom kinks...)"</ref>

== Communication ==
Communication between members can either be done through the use of "notes", or through the chat service that F-list provides to its members. "Notes" serve as a method of contacting other members who may not be online, don't use the chat function, or who simply prefer the privacy of snail-mail messaging, and work much like private messaging on forums and other chat-board based services. The chat function of F-list functions like a closed IRC server, and is a more instant method of connecting with others. A number of set and moderated channels exist, as well as user-created channels (called "private rooms") which can be publicly viewed and entered by other users serve as gathering places for multiple characters with the same interests; private messaging, ignoring, and unignoring are also possible.

== Controversy ==
On the February 3, 2011 (08:00 UTC), F-list was compromised by ex-coder/moderator [[Zidonuke|Zidonuke]],<ref>http://www.flayrah.com/3424/rogue-coders-attack-takes-f-list-down</ref> who was removed for abuse of privileges. The compromise resulted in all users being given admin privileges on the site and moderator privileges in the chat. The admins online at the time were banned from the site, as Zidonuke had hidden a backdoor program on the server and hacked the code. F-list was taken offline shortly after, with a broadcast on the chat by the ex-coder that there were no recent backups. It is uncertain whether the site was taken offline as a defensive measure by F-list staff, or by the Zidonuke. As of now, the site remains back up after a server wipe. Private Data consisting of email, IP records, and user logs were available to all users through the "log viewer" page while the site was up, as they were all admins. The users who abused this were timed-out of the site.
