Anthrocon 2006 took place from June 15 to 18, 2006 at the Westin Hotel and David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For the first time in its ten year history, Anthrocon was not held in July, but rather in June. The convention was moved from Philadelphia (where it was in 2005) to Pittsburgh.

After the Adams Mark was scheduled for demolition, Anthrocon was forced to seek new accommodation on very short notice. While the Wyndham Philadelphia locale was adequate during the 2005 convention, it was determined even before July 2005 that a new location would be required. As Philadelphia was showing no signs of providing an affordable venue that was acceptable to the demands and budget of a large-scale convention on terms that the convention directors could accept, the decision was made to switch to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The new facility, which features a separate hotel and convention space, appeared to alleviate most issues which had come up in the past conventions as well as provided enough space for a substantial Dealers Room, Artists Alley, and other 'permanent' programming space.

Guests of Honor
Anthrocon's Guests of Honor for 2006 were:

Interesting facts
* A lone brick - all that remained from old Adams Mark hotel - was sold at the charity auction for $200.
* $5,845 was raised for the Western Pennsylvania National Wild Animal Orphanage
* Pre-registered attendance counts topped at 2,489 people. This is a record over that of Anthrocon 2004. It also caused the "death" of one of the registration badge printers, specifically the printer which was responsible for the six-hour waits in the registration line at Anthrocon 2003.
* The total of all on site registrations and one day passes over the entire 10-year history of Anthrocon was approximately 15,000.
* 191 fursuiters attended the fursuit parade
* 2 the Ranting Gryphon was a notable appearance.

Problems
While for the most part the fan reception of Anthrocon 2006 was very positive, there were some problems.

*Many had issues with Anthrocon's move to a union-run establishment, which was forced upon it mostly due to size constraints. Some dealers chafed at the requirement of waiting for Teamsters to unload their work from the loading dock rather than doing it themselves - not that they were inefficient while working, but there were only a few of them and they were sometimes on breaks. Some got around this by carrying in material via the door from the hotel, which was permitted as long as the cart they carried their goods on was small enough to fit inside an airplane overhead baggage compartment. According to PeterCat: the Teamsters "required a break every 2 hours and a 30-minute unpaid lunch period after 4," but were easier to deal with than volunteers in many respects. There were similar problems with food in the convention area, which had to be bought at the concession stands, and many snuck food in to avoid paying $7 for a cheeseburger.
*Many room signs (some of which were original works of art) put up by fans were unceremoniously removed by hotel staff, in part because at least one was held on with duct tape, which could be expected to damage the paint on removal. One person retaliated by removing the room numbers from six rooms, which cost Anthrocon $400 in damages (negotiated down from $600). Anthrocon also took a $6,000 charge when it turned out that dealers would have to pay $52 each (rather than $10) for city taxes, a cost absorbed by the con.
*Spazfox's show turned out not to have nearly adequate space (a larger room was eventually booked for 2007). The fursuit parade also conflicted with the end of the art show auction as it wound through the dealer's room.
*The Frozen Oasis party on Friday night was forced to close around 50 minutes after it started due to complaints from hotel management and at least one person in another room. It was suggested that future parties be moved to a room in a separate hotel so that they would not be directly associated with the convention.
*There was also the standard couple of dislocations, broken bones, and one person getting wheeled off in an ambulance after supposedly overdosing on an "experimental drug" in private. Most of this appeared to happen on Sunday, after the convention programming had concluded.

Media coverage
Anthrocon 2006 was covered in the local media, beginning in February with a news brief item Fur Ball In the Works in the Pittsburgh City Paper. Coverage tended towards neutral-to-positive.

Anthrocon 2025

Anthrocon
unref
Anthrocon 2025 was the 19th annual furry convention. It was held July 4–6, 2025, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

The convention's theme was Deep Sea Adventures.

Anthrocon 2025 saw an attendance of 18.353, reclaiming once again its status as the world's largest in-person furcon; that is, if there is no larger Midwest FurFest's tally in December 2025. The charity partner was "Nose 2 Tail Cat Rescue, for whom they raised $87,267.

Crusader Cat, a fursuiter, writer, musician, actor, political extremist altfurry, and a brief a member of the social-political group the Furry Raiders, was spotted participating in AC's 2025 fursuit parade, causing consternation for most (congoers or not), in April. The virtual convention was dubbed AnthrocOnline (or Anthrocon Online)

In early June of 2021, members of the production crew began teasing an in-person film shoot that was taking place in Pittsburgh at the Waterfront Plaza of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

On July 2nd, AnthrocOnline officially kicked off, with Uncle Kage appearing in an Opening Ceremonies video partially shot in the Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh, Anthrocon's primary hotel. Panels and meetups were also held on Google Meet.

Through the weekend, many of Anthrocon's staple events were shown, filmed on-location around Pittsburgh, including a performance by Pepper Coyote and Fox Amoore (who appeared remotely from his home in Scotland), and Uncle Kage's Story Hour filmed on-location in Pizza Parma/Fernando's Cafe. In addition to the recorded content, live events also took place from the Astrocasters studio in Virginia, including the Charity Auction and Closing Ceremonies.

The videos recorded on-location in Pittsburgh were released in High Dynamic Range (HDR) 4K, marking the first time a major furry convention had main events broadcast in the 4K format.

Statement from Anthrocon staff
"We had high hopes but at this point, it looks like that we will not be able to safely hold the convention. As such we have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the convention will be canceled this year.

For those of you who have deferred memberships or dealerships from 2020, those deferrals will carry over to 2022, as will hotel rooms won at the charity auction. Emails with the coupon codes for Anthrocon 2022 will be sent out at a later date.

Those who were purchasing memberships for this year need not do anything. Those memberships will be canceled and since no payments were processed so there are no refunds that need to be issued.

We are planning a virtual convention for this year. Information regarding the virtual convention will follow shortly.

Plans are proceeding for the in-person convention for 2022 which will take place June 30th - July 3rd. We plan to carry over the theme once again (Aesop's Fables).

We are looking forward to Anthrocon's return in 2022 and are excitedly anticipating seeing everyone in person and making the return of Anthrocon 2022 the best Anthrocon ever."

Virtual Anthrocon
In late June, members from the Anthrocon AV team decided to host an impromptu online version of the convention dubbed "Virtual Anthrocon". They hosted key events such as opening and closing ceremonies, Uncle Kage's Story Hour, and annual fursuit dance competition through their YouTube and Vimeo, accessible from anthrocon.tv, from July 3-5. VRChat world creator Firr had built a virtual version of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center's 'Spirit of Pittsburgh' ballroom and other convention spaces prior to the livestream. Anthrocon agreed to make the VRChat world as an official gathering space for attendees over the weekend. There was no registration fee for the livestream or interacting with the virtual ballroom world.

The production of the live stream was handled by one of Anthrocon's video equipment vendors, Astrocasters. Production control was operated out of Astrocasters' Virginia warehouse, and was produced by FreezeFrame (who also served as the Emcee), Protocollie, and Veyote. Many other members of Anthrocon's production staff supported the live broadcasts, both on-site and remotely. TimeSuppression served as Technical Director, Nieto as Audio Engineer, Paradox Wolf was the on-site CG Operator while Simon Fox was the Graphic Artist, working remotely from his home in California.

According to stats released by Firr after the virtual convention ended, 6,136 unique visitors entered the Virtual Anthrocon VRChat world, which would have made it the third highest-attended convention, behind Anthrocon 2019 and ahead of Biggest Little Fur Con 2019. Two members of the production staff fursuited through the production control room and took a photo outdoors, claiming it was the "fastest Fursuit Parade and fursuit photo ever," followed by the shortest closing ceremonies in Anthrocon history.

Themed as the "Furry Revolution", in keeping with the historic locale, Anthrocon 1999 welcomed S. Andrew Swann and Vicky Wyman as its Guests of Honour.

The convention drew 804 attendees, almost as many attendees as 10, and just over 100 more than a new convention in California known as Further Confusion.

Anthrocon (AC) is an annual American furry convention and one of the largest furcons in the world, with an attendance of 20,618 in 2026.

Overview
The convention was founded in 1997 as Albany AnthroCon, which itself an offshoot of the furry Halloween parties held by Aloyen Youngblood; when attendance pushed triple digits, he decided to book a hotel and organized it as a convention in 1997 with the aid of local friends, Points, Rigel, and others. In its first year, the event attracted approximately 500 attendees.

In late 1998-1999, Points transferred the chairmanship of the convention to Dr. Samuel Conway. They formally organized the group as Anthrocon Inc., later renamed the convention "Anthrocon," and relocated it to Pennsylvania.

Since 1997, Anthrocon's charity auction has donated over $240,000 to local charities. The Science Fiction volunteer security force, the Dorsai Irregulars, provided security for the convention from 2002 until 2019.

Incorporation and trademarks
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on June 25, 1998, registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650). This classification differs from the 501(c)(3) status of Midwest Furry Fandom and Anthropomorphic Arts and Education; most notably, donations are not tax-deductible to their donors, but in return, the company has more flexibility about its operations, and more leeway to restrict access to non-members, since it's not a club.

Applications to register the word "Anthrocon" and the Anthrocon paw as a US trademarks were filed on September 18 and November 12, 2006. According to these filings, the word "Anthrocon" was first used on February 1, 1997, while the paw logo was used from June 30, 1998.

Currently, Anthrocon operates with the support of the city of Pittsburgh and local businesses. AC's own Show Your Badge programclarify works with the city's own Visit Pittsburgh, which allows congoers to visit many of Pittsburgh's landmarks at a reduced cost.

The convention partners with more than a dozen hotels in the city's downtown, offering more affordable accommodations to many pre-registered attendees. It also charter buses from these hotels to the convention center, which attendees can use free of charge.

Some restaurants in downtown Pittsburgh offer Anthrocon-themed specials, most prominently Fernando's (now Pizza Parma), a pizzeria that re-themes itself to Furryland during the convention weekend.

In 2007, AC was held again from July 5 to 8 at the David Lawrence Convention Center.

In 2008, total attendance reached 3,390. In 2010, it increased to 4,238 attendees and four official convention hotels. The convention's growth has historically averaged 14% yearly.

COVID-19 pandemic
In 2020, Anthrocon was not held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Online conventions were held in 2020 and 2021, using virtual meeting spaces and VRChat. The convention returned to being in person in 2022, with attendees required to provide proof of vaccination and wear medical face masks. These requirements were rescinded in 2024.

Guest of honor
As of 2024, Anthrocon no longer has a designated Guest of Honor(s).cnclarify

Fursuiting
Due to time and safety, the 2025 fursuit parade was capped off at (???). cn

Poodling
In 2025, Anthrocon put forth a new rule for the attending fursuiters regarding the fursuit parade, which was the banning of poodling during the event.

Also known as fursuit poodling, poodling is the action of fursuiters (also called poodler[s]) not being fully costumed (in partial/half-suit mode), showing some or all of their human skin (with the utter exemption of the head, and some of the time handpaws, and feetpaws) for a series of reasons (most commonly being mobility and motion or suit heat/weight). Some poodlers will wear arm sleeves with or without animal deco (stripes, fur patterns, etc).

Nonetheless, AC allowed poodlers access to all areas of the event, both within and outside the convention venue.

2026 heatwave
On July 3, 2026, it was announced that the Fursuit Block Party and Fursuit Parade were officially canceled for safety reasons regarding the ongoing heatwave.

No additional plans have been put forth regarding any other celebration and/or events.

2026 AI controversy
On July 4 2026, Anthrocon's convention committee released an official statement countering the accusationscn that the event's Art and Branding staff was using generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the creation of their official marketing media. After some speculation, it was announced in October that the NHL Entry Draft would be hosted in Pittsburgh, on Anthrocon's original dates.

Anthrocon broke ConFurence's longevity record that year, becoming the longest running furry convention in North America, and the 2nd longest running in the world after Eurofurence.

Uncle Kage commented
{{q|The Dealer's Room did not double in size. Well, it did, but only geographically. We widened the aisles from 15 to 22 feet, but we only added approximately 15% more table space. The attendance itself grew by about 15%, so it was pretty much in line.

I personally have noticed a decline in sales-per-attendee at the Art Show over the past ten years. The revenue generated by Art Show sales is pretty close to what it was in 2007, although the convention itself has doubled in size. and by 16 June there were over 1,800 pre-registrations, as compared to 1,700 the year before. Official attendance for the con was 2,849 people, including 202 super-sponsors. Additionally, there were 353 fursuiters in the fursuit parade. A claim was made to Guinness World Records for "Most Mascots in a parade" and is the process of being verified. The Guinness Worlds Record organization may be present next year to verify a new record.

The convention's charity for the year was Animal Friends. $6608 was raised through initial donations and a charity auction, with an extra $1000 added by Time Warner in October.

The Pittsburgh media was generally warm in its coverage of the event. The Chicago media, however, wasn't quite as kind, as Paul Sullivan of ChicagoSports.com bemoaned the convention after the Chicago Cubs moved to a different hotel for their series in-town against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of the convention. He did not post whether the Cubs were supposed to be at the Westin Convention Center or the Omni William Penn. The Pirates took the series, 2 games to 1, no doubt with many furries in attendance.

The Pirates previously hosted the division leader Milwaukee Brewers prior to the Cubs series and the Brewers DID stay in the same hotel as the convention. During the unfortunate trip, the Brewers reported several unpleasant experiences with furries, labeling them as "creepy", including hearing loud disturbing noises including "barking" throughout the night. (It is worth noting however, that neither Anthrocon nor the Westin received any noise complaints from the Brewers) Brewers announcer Jim Powell is quoted as saying "Going up the elevator is an unpleasant experience when you are packed in with a bunch of people who look like they haven't left their mother's basements since the last convention." Following the convention, the Brewers experienced a major slump, allowing the Cubs to close their lead to a few games. Bloggers would dub this the "Curse of the Furries"

Trivia
* A couple of events were canceled by the convention staff (notably, the Fursuit Dodgeball and "Recess!") because they endangered lights and the ceiling of the convention hall.
* Three /b/ users from 4chan and 7chan arrived on Thursday to "raid" the convention. They stood outside across the street in the rain, holding signs with the text "POOL'S CLOSED" and "YIFF IN HELL, FURFAGS." Uncle Kage and Giza came outside with umbrellas for them in the rain - they accepted them despite "hating furries". /b/ users also vandalized the message board at the convention outside The Zoo, including posting Longcat, multiple "DESU" messages, many messages about "spider experts" and more. A number of Nintendo DS pictochats held during the convention were disrupted with spam featuring depictions of the protest posted under the guise of "Kage".
*Around $32,000 was paid out to artists in Artists Alley, an increase of roughly $12,000 over last year. Plans were laid to increase the number of seats to around 120 for next year, as many could not get one of the 80 seats on Friday (when there were 114 signups) or Saturday (113).

Anthrocon 2005 was held July 7-10 at the Wyndham (now Sheraton) Philadelphia, a hotel in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The guests of honor were Peter Laird, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Timothy Albee, ("Kaze: Ghost Warrior")

The 2004 Ursa Major Awards were announced at Anthrocon 2005.
Theme
The convention's theme was "Heroes". It was a nod to police officers, firemen, EMTs, and all kinds of everyday people who did something to become heroes in others' eyes. Among planned events were the Dealers' Room and Artists' Alley, gaming room, and especially Uncle Kage's Story Hour.

Change of venue
Following the demolition announcement of the Adam's Mark hotel to occur in the first quarter of 2005, the Anthrocon staff scrambled to find an alternate venue to hold the convention for their 2005 program. Dozens of hotels and convention centers offered to be the new location of the convention, but the Wyndham hotel was the closest and cheapest available location. After a long duration, the official announcement was made that the Wyndham Philadelphia would serve as their venue for 2005. As it was explained shortly thereafter, the hotel would be their venue only for 2005 as they were looking into a new permanent home for the convention. This would later turn out to be in Pittsburgh. To date, the Wyndham is the only hotel Anthrocon has used for only one year.

Due to space limitations the internet room was set up in the second floor of the lobby, and the convention could not offer The Zoo to the attendees (the large main lobby more than made up for it). They could not hold as many artists and dealers selling their services and products as the previous year. Despite the space limitations and a slight decrease in attendance (this is the only Anthrocon to date that experienced a dip in attendance), the convention proved to be a success.

For a few years, the restaurant list had omitted the nearby Denny's restaurant for good reason -- many reports of horrible service had been reported. As of February 2014, the Denny's in question no longer exists.

Anthrocon 2001 was held 27-29 July 2001 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

The convention's theme was "Furries in Flight". Guests of Honor were Bill Holbrook, Dan DeCarlo (the creator of Josie and the Pussycats, amongst other Archie Comics characters), and Dan's wife, Josie (for whom the character was named). This convention was one of Mr. DeCarlo's last public appearances before passing away in December.

The convention drew 1,457 attendees.

Staircon is the nickname given to Anthrocon 2001 by some of its attendees.

The convention was held for the first time in the Adam's Mark Philadelphia, which at the time had an older elevator system for guests. The elevators were unable to handle the traffic during the convention, forcing attendees to utilize the stairwells or (for those who found them) the staff elevators.

As the theme of Anthrocon 2001 was "Furries in Flight", it became common for attendees to change this to "Furries in Flight(s of Stairs)", or variants thereof, in later con reports.

The hotel, to its credit, took action to upgrade their elevators in future years.

During the Feedback Session at Anthrocon 2002, a fan made the complaint that the risers on the stairs were too tall, and it was too easy to trip. To his credit, Uncle Kage was nonplussed for a moment, then said that he would take up the matter with the hotel.

2 the Ranting Gryphon, in his Furry Balls rant, mentions the difficulties with the elevators in his own unmistakable style:

<blockquote>...I know the evil plot behind it all. Anthrocon people were sitting around and saying, "Hmm, we've sold out this hotel. How can we squeeze more furs in here next year? I know! We'll break the fucking elevators and make 'em walk up twenty million flights of stairs until they're sweating cooking grease and Cheez Whiz and falling over from cardiovascular seizure! Then we'll put 'em in a registration line thats starts in fucking Cairo, and with no food, and they'll turn cannibalistic and starve, and by the time they get to the registration desk, they'll weigh, like, twelve fucking pounds! And we can stuff forty of them in one room!"</blockquote>

Albany AnthroCon 1997 (AAC 1997) was the first Anthrocon, held 3-6 July 1997 at the Omni Albany Hotel in Albany, New York, USA.

Overview
The convention was originally scheduled to be held at the Desmond Albany Hotel, closer to Albany International Airport; however, it was discovered in June 1997 that the convention's contact at the hotel -- who had, at that point, resigned to move out of state -- had not made the appropriate arrangements, and the hotel was not in a position to host the con.

The convention was almost canceled before hard work on the part of Chip Unicorn led to the move to the Omni.

Guests of Honor
The Guests of Honour for AAC were artists Daphne Lage, Watts Martin, and David L. Pulver.

Attendance
The convention drew 500 attendees in its first year, despite the hotel shift. Pre-registration before New Year's Day 1997 was a mere $15, with quad hotel rooms $75/night.
