'''Michele Light''' was born a citizen of the [[Wikipedia:Philippines|Philippines]], and took her oath of [[Wikipedia:U.S. citizenship|U.S. citizenship]] at the age of four. Sadly, she cannot become [[Wikipedia:President of the United States|President of the United States]] due to this, although there is some hope of this happening some day, thanks to [[Wikipedia:Arnold Schwarzenegger|Our Beloved Governator]]. After many years of defacing United States Government furniture during her father's tours of duty with the US Air Force, Michele settled in Southern California, then promptly left the area to attend [[Wikipedia:The Art Institute of Seattle|The Art Institute of Seattle]]. After receiving her art degree she migrated to the San Diego area, where she first met [[Terrie Smith]] while working on her first "real" art job, animating the (mercifully) short-lived [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124229/ ''Attack of the Killer Tomatoes'' animated TV show.] Terrie introduced Michele to the then blooming furry fandom scene, and Michele began drawing furry images in late 1992.

Over a decade later, Michele is still going strong in a much larger and robust furry scene. Her usual convention appearances include [[Further Confusion]], [[Anthrocon]], [[Conifur]], and [[Midwest Furfest]]. Her involvement in the fandom is not extensive due to her career with [[Wikipedia:Verizon|Verizon]], where she works as a senior graphic designer in their Web site division.

The most common comment about Michele's work is, "It's so cute!!" Her love of [[animé]] definitely shows through in her work, which has the distorted proportions and oversized eyes that define the Japanese style of drawing. It is said that you can tell people who have learned to draw [[snow leopard]]s (Michele's signature animal) by comparing the spot patterns on their bodies and [[tail]]s to Michele's work.

==Plot==
In the novel, a group of animals, tired of abuse by their [[human]] owners, revolt. Although their philosophy of '[[Animalism]]' is popular, few of the animals are able to understand its concepts fully, and the [[pig]]s exploit this, becoming the de-facto ruling class and exploiting the difference in species to keep the animals miseducated. For example, instead of teaching the animals what the precepts of Animalism are, they paint them on a wall and try to teach the animals how to read, a skill that only the pigs learned. Later, they claimed 'weakness' and 'special needs' in order to claim more and more special abilities. Finally, the animals cannot tell the difference between pig and human, and the precepts of animalism have been reduced to a single phrase: 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.'

==Influence==
The Animalism precept 'All animals are equal' is referenced in the title to the furry supplement to [[Gamma World]], [[All Animals Are Equal]].

The book has been turned into a movie twice: an animated movie in 1955, and a live-action movie in 1999.

The furry [[Snowball]] took his name from the character of the same name in the book.

==The Animals==
The characters that populate Animal Farm are those that you would expect on any farm; pigs, horses, chickens, dogs and so on. It is particulary interesting how Orwell has humanised the animals. His humanisation of animals is a peculiar mix of a realistic approach and the need to suspend belief.

As far as language goes, initially the animals communicate in their own 'animal language' and learn later to speak and read the human language through exposure to books they find. Taking into account the varying brain size of the animals, some animals are more adept at learning the human langauge than others. For example, the pigs become quite literate whereas the sheep and chickens learn very little. Interestingly, there is very little actual dialogue written word for word. For example, instead of writing "I'm going to get some food," Orwell might write "He told everyone that he was going to gather some food." Whenever actual written dialogue is present, it is usually an important speech being made.

When it comes to the physical capabilities of the animals, some suspension of belief is required. The pigs learn to write, and make do without hands by curling the knuckles of their hoofs around a pen or brush. In reality it is unlikely a pig could actually grasp a writing tool well enough in this manner to write, but we readily accept this.

Finally, whereas the world of the humans and animals is a seperate one in most stories involving animals and humans, in Animal Farm the humans eventually act as though the animals were humans. The Animal Farm becomes a common topic of conversation, there are some business deals with the humans and in general the people appear to regard the animals as humans.

==The Films==

Two films based on the George Orwell have been made. One was an animated film, which stuck fairly close to the originaly story, but added a more family friendly ending by tacking on an epilogue. The other film was a live action film made with live animals. This film took far more liberties with the source material.

This is partly a test to see if I've got this editor figured out before I do anything important with it. I notice someone put in an entry for yours truly (in fact that's how I wandered in - I was checking old Other Suns links which led to Nicolai's entry which led to mine) which I may update later; at least I suppose the fact that I was Den Mother of ConFurence for years and am now holding that position in CaliFur is at interesting as anything already there. Also an excuse for putting in a few Ursa Major links inasmuch as I maintain the Recommended List.

Speaking of which, I got your note suggesting the addition of WikiFur to the Recommended Anthropomorphics list for this year - makes sense, though I'll have to discuss where to put it with the rest of the committee. We're currently counting nominations for this year's Ursa Major ballot.

==View counts==
I've noticed that the view counts in [[:Special:Popularpages]] have not updated at least since last Thursday on several articles I've been following, even though I've viewed some of those articles myself during that time. I've verified this from two different computers and used a couple of other tricks to make reasonably certain it's not a browser cache issue. What gives?

Edit: There are also several hundred articles that currently show 0 views.

:Yes. I had a chat with the admins and apparently they had to discontinue popular pages updating due to server loads. We can get the same sort of information from the google analytics stats, so it's no ''great'' loss, although it is a pity that people can't access that without talking to me first.

So I figured it would be superfluous. What do you think? This is a bit awkward, but I think this is the right way to do it. I'm looking over a variety of articles to see what I can add to. I lengthened Ken Fletcher's piece a little -- he deserves more, but it's hard to do him justice, even knowing him fairly well. (Ken is modest to the point of humility.) Kevin Duane's piece broke me up. I could add 10,000 words, but wouldn't know where to start. And do I want to make him out a clown, a villain, a well-intentioned schlemiel, or just a guy who got a lot of bad breaks? Then there was Steve Martin. Another perplexing case. I had to add a bit more detail to the "controversy" section, that put the customs debacle in a somewhat better light.

Pages [[Sibe|can and have]] been written about [[Banrai#Past disputes|past disputes]], but in the end the actual situation can usually be boiled down to just a few paragraphs written in a fairly dry tone. :I probably wouldn't delete it. It is not the best pictoral representation of the whole show, though. The animation tells a story, but it is not the whole story about the show, just as the show does not tell the whole story about the fandom. Its [http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/index.php/Taxidermy purpose on ED] was to promote [[fursecution]] (to whit, the conversion of furries into trophies and rugs) and the selection of passages in the animation is limited to those supporting that argument. I believe that a small selection of screen captures from various points in the show added by use of the <nowiki><gallery></nowiki> tag (see [[The Forest]] for an example) might be a better addition to the article.

:Short answer - it depends! Long answer follows . . .

:If the terms are related, but with differing nuances, then you might discuss them on the same page. For example, [[yiff]] has many meanings, but they are all related to a reasonably close degree, so they are all described on the same page. In general, you can tell "reasonably close" by the categories - if separate meanings would all fall under the same category then you would probably discuss them together (except people, who always have different articles).

:Some terms have numerous unrelated meanings. In this case we divide it into separate pages with a qualifier in lowercase [unless a proper name] and inside parenthesis, and then create what is called a [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Disambiguation|disambiguation page]] for people who link to the term without parentheses. The page should have the <tt><nowiki>{{disambig}}</nowiki></tt> tag at the bottom. If another topic has the name within it, and a shorterned form might conflict, it is given the full title but also included in the disambiguation page.

:Well, it looks like you figured all that out! I moved it to [[Maned Wolf]] because it is a proper name of a species. The contents box will automatically appear if you have four headers in the article. If you do not (or to move it), you can make it appear by adding <nowiki>__TOC__</nowiki> wherever you want. I sometimes put this inside a div tag that is set to float to the right. You can also hide it with <nowiki>__NOTOC__</nowiki>.

:One question ''I'' have, though - do you have permission from the people who made those pictures to put them on this site? While I appreciate that you wish to improve the articles, it is not enough to just state who owns the copyright of an image - if you do not have explicit permission (either by having asked them or through a blanket license or copyright wavier), we cannot display the images. That's what copyright means, after all . . . the right to make copies. Both the [http://www.arkgallery.org/ Ark Gallery] and Kenneth W. Fink/Root Resources sources appear to be non-free in this respect (indeed, the Ark Gallery seems to have a specific note at the bottom saying that images are not for reproduction elsewhere).

:It's hard to do too much. I guess if you found yourself stretching for something to say, then it might be time to stop. Of course, I have a [[GreenReaper|fairly short article]], but then I don't have much to say about myself, as I've not had a long history in the furry fandom. [[Somewolf]] has a rather longer one. Certainly, comics can be and have been covered in significant depth. The ''[[Gaming Guardians]]'' article is a good idea of the minimum length that gives a good coverage of the key aspects of the topic, enough that it was featured, but it would certainly be possible to add to it without compromising that.

:It is possible to go much farther, of course. For example, Wikipedia has a very extensive article on ''[[Wikipedia:Kevin and Kell|Kevin and Kell]]''. That would be unusual to see here (probably the closest is ''[[Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures]]'', and the plot is hardly covered there), but if people want to go that far on just about any topic it is welcome. We have many relatively short articles through happenstance, not choice. It's not like we're going to run out of paper, after all. :-)

I think all of us will agree that having subcategories for species, and for characters of those species, is a good thing, up to a certain point. But I'm concerned that we may be getting a little carried away with it. Perhaps we're not to the point yet where we've overdone it and need to backpedal on some of the categories that have been created, but I think we're getting close to that point in some areas, and that it would be a good idea to stop and think about how far we want to go with this.

I click on the Wolf characters category and I see a whole bunch of names, plus (in this instance) sub-categories for Artic Wolf characters, Werewolves, and Wolf-Hybrid characters. Am I going to click on the subcategories to find the one or two listings beneath each entry, or ignore them and use the large main list? :Probably the best place to start is [[Wikipedia:Template:Infobox|Wikipedia's sample infobox template]], which is relatively simple as they go. The one you mentioned, [[Wikipedia:Template:Infobox Television|Template:Infobox Television]] is indeed hideously complex, in part because it relies on expressions (which are not yet available at Wikia, so it will give hideously mangled results).

:Start simple. Just copy the template to a blank Template: page here (perhaps [[Template:Infobox]]!), and then try it out on a page. Try modifying various things, trying it out in the preview. Have a look at [[Wikipedia:Help:Template|Wikipedia's template help]]. It is not, unfortunately, very clear, but it starts off with some useful information. Our [[WikiFur:Templates|templates section]] has various ones that definitely work here, which you could copy from as well. Those pictures happen to be particularly tall, and the fact that there is little text to go with it means that a better use of the space is to have them in a row. :Also, when writing messages on talk pages please sign your name by putting <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> at the end so we know who's talking and so who to reply to. :All we need on the talk page (or on the Licensing section of the image pages) is something to show that a) you have asked to use the author's copyrighted works, on this website or on Wikipedia (which has similar requirements) and b) that he has said yes. This would probably be your initial request to him, and his reply. This should not a general agreement that you can write a wiki page about the topic (you could do that without asking), but something that makes it clear that you intend to use some related parts of his copyrighted works in the pages - as you say, "both his pics and text". That is the thing that requires permission, because it is his right to allow copies of his work on this site (or not to allow them, as he sees fit).

:If you have previously asked for specific permission to use parts of his works rather than just writing ''about'' them, then that's fine - just put a copy of that on the page. If not, you should do so. You could point him to the wiki pages that have already been written (including some of the pictures) and ask him if that kind of use is OK. :In this specific case, I don't think there's a real problem with removing names on the People to add list. It actually saves time over us having to go through the process of excluding an article later (unless someone makes it via another link). There's not much "information" in just a name. :-)

However, I found that in the movies list Felidae is already there - but it is actually the novel (on which the film was based), not the film that the article is about. So my question is, should there be two articles: one for Felidae the film and one for Felidae the novel, or should they be combined into one article? Even though Second Life requires a credit card or SMS-capable phone, there is no way to tell inside the game how old someone really is. The game's Terms of Service state quite clearly you must be over the age of 18 to enter the "main grid" of Second Life. If anyone is found to be under 18 in the main grid, they will be banned from the game and all money and inventory will be forfeit. It is generally assumed that almost all players in the main grid are over the age of 18.

Second Life rates the individual sections of the game as Mature, or PG, with other possible ratings. These ratings help moderate the behaviour of people that populate the various sections of the game, as they won't tolerate someone breaking the PG rating by performing a Mature-rated act in a PG-rated zone. In (early 2006?), a "furry admin" meeting for all furry and/or furry-friendly sims' administrators or owners was held to discuss several unifying strategies regarding the fandom population in world ([[Inferniel Solvang]] was the lead fur for this particular enconter.) Of the many proposals, one was the creation of a common, official symbol or logo for identifying purposes for sim or fur.

The final design, a SL logo inspired image, came to be thanks to the design of SL [[furry artist]], [[Yiffy Yaffle]]. The logo can be viewed on most of the older furry sims, with propagation to newer ones going at a slow, but steady rate.

As of version 1.6.0, Second Life now hooks [[Wikipedia:Quicktime|Quicktime]], if it is installed on the user's system, to provide an interface that allows one to watch movies within the client itself. A '''very''' fast connection is suggested in this case, as you will be streaming world data ''and'' a video at the same time. If Quicktime is not installed, the user will be reminded that Quicktime is needed to watch video within the client when they enter a parcel with video.

A number of furs use the video feature to watch the [[Funday PawPet Show]] on their land.

Some users have taken advantage of this new feature to bring forward a new business: Movie Rentals. One may rent adult movies from a couple of the businesses in Second Life, for the express purpose of being able to watch pornography on their land for a couple of hours.

== Preview Grid ==
As Linden Lab draws closer to a potential release, be it a sub-version upgrade, or a full point-release jump, they release preview versions of the client, to allow all interested parties to test the new client and its features. This is extremely important to builders, scripters, and texturers, as knowing how the new software will handle their works is very important.

The Preview client is run on a separate grid from the current client, which means there are less people to interact with. Most of the people available test their wares, making sure they won't have to do a full rebuild or rescript for the next version, as well as reporting bugs.

== Technical advice ==

Due to the amount of data that is sent between the client (you) and the servers, Second Life requires broadband internet of 1Mbps or better, at least 512MB of computer RAM, and a CPU faster than 800MHz, though the bare minimum will not be as pleasant an experience. Linden Lab suggests that you invest in hardware that will exceed the minimum specs. There are also specific graphics card requirements due to the game making use of a certain OpenGL standard. The system requirements for interested people is listed at the Second Life website partially, and more exact requirements can be found inside its technical support area.

Although it is not impossible to use a dial-up connection with Second Life, nearly every option of the game requires serious cutting back; close to the bare minimum. This makes the experience flatter and less pleasant, with lag so heavy that movement is difficult and awkward with occasional stop-frame style "clipping" animation. Walking forward one step, for example, might occasionally result in sliding forward more then a yard or two before being snapped back to your intended position in a rather sudden jerk, or scenery change. Sometimes, said movement could make you sink through the ground or pass through other objects (like a wall) before the snap-back occurs. Then you find you need another of the regular 17-20[[Wikipedia:Megabyte|MB]] to 20MB updates to play. There aren't many dialup users on Second Life.

Second Life has been dealing with issues over ATi's video card drivers for quite a while. It has become practice on the forums to suggest to ATi users to pick up the [http://www.omegadrivers.net/ Omega Drivers], a set of user-modified drivers recognized by ATi (according to their author) as "''the best-modded drivers in the Internet''". These Omega Drivers enable features that Second Life can use which aren't easily enabled in the default drivers.

Bernard Doove became the sole publisher after issue 20. Prior to that a slightly larger collective of Australian furs were at the publishing helm. Other furs still help out though. Each issue is put together at a [[binding party]] by Bernard and furs who decide to lend a hand. The amount of furs who come to these collations range from twelve to sometimes zero. After which South Fur Lands is available for purchase either through ordering through the internet at the South Fur Lands homepage, or at conventions. Five issues are published each year - the four quarterly issues with generally all-ages furry content, and one annual sex and violence issue.

== Story ==

The leading characters of In a Perfect World are AraKaraath (an anthropopmorphic dragon) and Aneirin (an anthropomorphic wolf.) These the fursonas of the creators of the comic strip which is largely based on real life events. In real life and in the comic, the two are mates (the boyfriend kind) who live in a typical English apartment. Everyone in the world of In a Perfect World is an anthropomorphic animal of some sort, and friends and occassionaly family members appear in the strip in their fursona form. While pretty much all characters such as Budger and Phoenix are real life furries, characters such as Wai - the couples daughter - are purely imaginary. The events of the comic too, a based (sometimes wholy, sometimes partially) on real life.

== History ==

In a Perfect World has been running for many years and gathered a substantial fan base thanks to it humourous outlook on the real world. After a break, Version 2.0 of In a Perfect World was unleashed on the first of January, 2005. Whereas previously the story would leap all over the place from strip to strip, in Version 2.0, storylines are continued for several strips. But despite a strong sense of narrative, the comic is as random as ever.

==Plot==
In the novel, a group of animals, tired of abuse by their [[human]] owners, revolt. Although their philosophy of '[[Animalism]]' is popular, few of the animals are able to understand its concepts fully, and the [[pig]]s exploit this, becoming the de-facto ruling class and exploiting the difference in species to keep the animals miseducated. For example, instead of teaching the animals what the precepts of Animalism are, they paint them on a wall and try to teach the animals how to read, a skill that only the pigs learned. Later, they claimed 'weakness' and 'special needs' in order to claim more and more special abilities. Finally, the animals cannot tell the difference between pig and human, and the precepts of animalism have been reduced to a single phrase: 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.'

==Influence==
The Animalism precept 'All animals are equal' is referenced in the title to the furry supplement to [[Gamma World]], [[All Animals Are Equal]].

The book has been turned into a movie twice: an animated movie in 1955, and a live-action movie in 1999.

The furry [[Snowball]] took his name from the character of the same name in the book.

==The Animals==
The characters that populate Animal Farm are those that you would expect on any farm; pigs, horses, chickens, dogs and so on. It is particulary interesting how Orwell has humanised the animals. His humanisation of animals is a peculiar mix of a realistic approach and the need to suspend belief.

As far as language goes, initially the animals communicate in their own 'animal language' and learn later to speak and read the human language through exposure to books they find. Taking into account the varying brain size of the animals, some animals are more adept at learning the human langauge than others. For example, the pigs become quite literate whereas the sheep and chickens learn very little. Interestingly, there is very little actual dialogue written word for word. For example, instead of writing "I'm going to get some food," Orwell might write "He told everyone that he was going to gather some food." Whenever actual written dialogue is present, it is usually an important speech being made.

When it comes to the physical capabilities of the animals, some suspension of belief is required. The pigs learn to write, and make do without hands by curling the knuckles of their hoofs around a pen or brush. In reality it is unlikely a pig could actually grasp a writing tool well enough in this manner to write, but we readily accept this.

Finally, whereas the world of the humans and animals is a seperate one in most stories involving animals and humans, in Animal Farm the humans eventually act as though the animals were humans. The Animal Farm becomes a common topic of conversation, there are some business deals with the humans and in general the people appear to regard the animals as humans.

'''Maus''' is a Pulitzer Prize ([[Wikipedia:Pulitzer_Prize]]) winning comic written and drawn by Art Spiegelman which told his father's true story of surviving the holocaust ([[Wikipedia:Holocaust]]). What makes Maus a furry comic is that Spiegelman uses anthropomorphic characters of different species to represent different nationalities. Originally Maus was released in two volumes in small installations. Volume One was released from 1973 - 1983 and Volume Two was released from 1986 - 1991. == Story ==
There are two stories within Maus. Vladek Spiegelman's story of surviving the holocaust, and Art Spiegelman's present day story of his flawed relationship with his father. Art Speigleman used a tape recorder to capture most of his fathers tale as he told it, but he also recorded and took note of events the occured while he was trying to create Maus. Often there will be a present day scene ends with Art prompting his father to continue his story, at which point Vladek's story picks up where it was last left. Spiegelman tells a very raw story with no fear of portraying himself or his father in (at times) a negative light. It is this honesty that makes Maus so brilliant, coupled with the always important messages it delivers about prejudice and the holocaust.

== Anthropomorphic Mice ==
'Maus' translated into English is mouse. Mice are used to represent the Jewish people and are highly human in form. Tails are only occasionally present and the bodies and completely human, albiet covered in fur and the heads are that of mice. The reason for this creative decision is alluded to in two quotes printed in Maus. The first quote is by Adolph Hitler. "The Jews are undoubtedly a race. But they are not human." The second quote is from a Pomeranian newspaper article. "Mickey Mouse is the most miserable ideal ever revealed....Healthy emotions tel every independant young man and every honourable youth that the dirty and filth-covered vermin, the greatest bacteria carrier in the animal kingdom, cannot be the ideal type of animal....Away with Jewish brutalization of the people! Down with Mikey Mouse! Wear the Swastika Cross!" So is Art Spiegelman agreeing with these quotations by using mice to represent the Jewish people? No, he is defying these statements.

== Other Anthropomorphics in Maus ==
Germans are represented as cats, presumably due to the predatorary power cats have over mice is an analogy of the power Nazi Germany exerted over the Jewish people. The French are frogs (simply because of the French and their infamous love of escargots), Poles are pigs, Swedes are deer and Americans are dogs.
