----
Hello, this is Dirt Fox. Right now I have the link on yerf.com go to yerf.metafur.org. If there's anywhere else it should go nowadays please let me know, I'll be glad to change it. --Dirt Fox, 3 Jul 2020 02:48 UTC

This is Rat, the Yerf guy.. I think I may have messed up the flow a bit, could I get help cleaning it up? Its like trying to represent a 3D thing on a 2D space. There's chronological, but also several threads of things are trying to be represented, the site's main history, as well as little offshoot things.

I read it closer, and it implied some things that weren't true. For example, when the change was made from SCFA to Yerf, that was only a name change, and some redesign of the layout. There was no relaunch as far as rules or anything else goes. It used to be at http://rat.org/yerf, and I wanted it to have its own domain so it could live on without me should the time came, and it did. ((part of comment by --Kilorat))

: This is doubtless my fault. I was trying to to piece it together from newsgroup posts and the quotes on the back of sugar packets, so I'm sure I got a few things mixed up. :-) ((part of reply by --GreenReaper))

And the grandfathering issue was only due to how long the site had been around, and how inevitibly the rejected applicants would find worse art than their own to point at and ask why that is allowed on but theirs is not. I'm not even sure if the grandfathering thing is worth meantioning really. ((part of comment by --Kilorat))

: I think it should be there because of the way it constantly seemed to come up as an issue. It was the reason that there were artists there of the same relative quality as those who were later turned away - without it, Yerf just looks arbitrary. ((part of reply by --GreenReaper))

My move to california from the east coast occured Sept 22, 1998, and Yerf was down for only a week. I pretty much drove to Tugrik's work from NH, in my compact car for 2500 miles with all my possessions. Somehow it survived. :) ((part of comment by --Kilorat))

: I can top that - I disassembled my computer completely, packed it in my suitcase, and flew 4000 miles from London to Detroit (in fact, more, because I stopped off in Atlanta). Who knows what they did to it in baggage handling, but it survived! ((part of reply by --GreenReaper))

That whole episode had a sad ending, Tugrik made some promises that he didn't deliver on, or he didn't communiate his progress despite me asking, leaving me to believe he lost interest. So I asked for the site back so I could give it to Dingo, who had some great ideas and I believed would do great things. We parted company with him believing I intended to take it back the entire time and I was just using him for temporary hosting. We havent spoken since. So maybe we should downplay, but not remove that section out of respect for Tugrik. Or include it for history's sake, though it is more gossipy that historical. It would be like documenting president Hoover's wife was sleeping with the gardener or something (i just made that up, just an example), its kind of irrelevent. --Kilorat (talk) 08:27, 14 November 2005

: Misunderstandings happen. Hopefully WikiFur can be a way of sorting them out as much as anything, given the ability it has to attract all members of the community. I think all that really needs to be said is what actually happened. The reasons behind it . . . well, they're not that encyclopediac, but they're here if people want to find out. --GreenReaper 15:18, 14 Nov 2005 (UTC)

---
No worries on my end. I knew I was a temporary host from the start, so returning it when asked was no big deal. Once Yerf moved on I concentrated more on the other sites I hosted, and I've kept up the various hosting projects to this day. They're a little bit bigger of an operation now, spanning three data centers, but they are still dedicated to providing free services to webcomics and artists who need a place. Hosting Yerf in the early days was a good nudge in the right direction for this kind of stuff, so I enjoyed my time helping you guys out.

Never did quite figure out why you guys chose to, as you put it, 'part company' from me and not talk since, or why you were so worried about the process of having it returned. I figure it was because I was just a sitehost and not really a hang-out-level of friend. Our crowds didn't really cross much, either. Because of this I felt your caution about things was understandable. At least I hope you felt I did my job honorably, and that any worries you had about it were proven to be misplaced.

I'm honestly surprised you guys mentioned me in there due to the short tenure, but I'm glad you did. Thanks for remembering! --Tugrik (talk) 07:18, 27 February 2006
AfD on Wikipedia
The Yerf article on Wikipedia is presently up for deletion. Saving it requires the following:
*Be a Wikipedia editor with a significant number of edits. Unfortunately, edits from new users are discounted, so if you're not already a participant in Wikipedia, the best you can to is bring this up with friends who are.
*Make yourself familiar with all relevant policies for inclusion of material in Wikipedia. If you're arguing for the article to be kept, it has to be kept for a reason based on Wikipedia's rules.
*Visit Yerf's AfD page, while logged in as your Wikipedia user name, and place a vote stating "keep" (or "delete", if you don't think it should be there), with a short description of what rules justify your vote.

The following will be counterproductive, causing it to be deleted:
*For the love of all that's holy, don't create an account just to vote on this AfD. That counts as stuffing the ballot via "sock-puppets" or "meat-puppets", and not only will these votes be discounted, but the credibility of lots of other votes will be threatened too. If you're not a long-time editor, find a friend who is, and inform them about the issue.

::I've already handled that. What mostly needs to happen to sway the balance of the votes is to find, and cite, print articles about the fandom that specifically refer to Yerf. An hour's searching online didn't yield much, mostly because it's hard to track down copies of the print articles online amidst false positives.

::A widely-distributed print article that spent a paragraph discussing furry art archives would likely be enough, but I don't recall any articles that devoted that much space. Multiple widely-distributed articles that give a one-line mention of it might be sufficient.

There are no fewer than six "citation needed" tags in this one short section. This seems a bit much for a featured article! On top of this, at least one allegation there is a pretty serious one - enough so that if this were a UK site there'd be a possible case for a libel suit. At the very least, I'd have thought that that particular accusation ought to be properly referenced. (from Dingo) I'm sure somebody can edit this to format it, it's more of a non-wiki-style explanation and a plea. The truth is, the donations were around $6000, yes. They went into a new server and hosting costs. It was said by somebody I used money on drugs and stuff, but I didn't. I did buy a new server and pay for hosting costs as long as I could. The server that was bought I'm sure FRAAR has taken as payment. I did run into hard times, long story, but I never used any of the money beyond use for Yerf. I still own the rights for it, and am trying to get something done with it, of course no promises. But hosting now would be something I could afford if whatever I have in mind comes into fruition. I want what I have in mind to be more than furry but furry would be a great start. I really am sorry to everybody who donated and stuff. We always wanted it to continue on forever and I was younger and never the best admin. I screwed up and it was my fault it failed as it did. Here's hoping to the future, if you want to contact me I'm sure you can figure out how. Please do. From when donations were taken years and years ago, I still have every letter and card sent to me kept in a safe. I'm sorry I disappointed everybody.<small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dingofox (talk • contribs) 18:03, 12 November 2012 .</small><!-- [Template:Unsigned] -->

Yerf was probably the furry fandom's best known exclusively non-adult art archive of its time. Formerly known as the Squeeky Clean Furry Archive, it presented itself as the benchmark in its class for the last ten years, due in part to the rising skill level required for admission.

The site was a good place to find the early works of many well-known artists.

Lengthy downtime over 2005-6 and competition from newer archives resulted in loss of popularity among both viewers and artists. As of early 2009, the domain yerf.com redirected to the Yerf Historical Archive, hosted by ArtSpots; it stopped redirecting in late 2009. When ArtSpots closed at the start of 2012, the archive was passed to GreenReaper.
Art policy
As indicated by the name, the SCFA was always distinguished by a strong PG focus. Around the time it was re-branded as Yerf, new policies were introduced concerning the quality of artwork.

At first, a large proportion of artists might still have qualified to enter, but the bar has been raised over time to a point where even reasonably good artists might face several rejections before being allowed in, if they managed it at all.

The long, usually six-month, mandatory wait period to reapply heightened this controversy considerably; some unsuccessful applicants believed this was sometimes applied as a form of punishment for failing to complete an application correctly.

This led to claims of elitismfact, which were (to an extent) ignored, as the majority of community members supported at least some level of quality filtering. Complaints about the speed of the review process were also frequent, due to the difficulty of getting qualified reviewers who could spare the time and effort to review submissions.

Controversy
dubious
Although a user called RobinLion warned people not to donate any money after the initial crash, as Yerf would "most likely never come back," and the money would instead "be spent on everything but Yerf," thousands of dollars were raised in donations.

Reports vary on whether the amount was closer to $2500 or $6000, and whether the money was spent on the site.

Volunteers who brought Yerf back up several times never received anything from their efforts, nor was the money ever refunded.

I'm sorry I disappointed everybody.

The following covers the history of the art archive Yerf.

SCFA
Yerf was founded in 1996 by Rat as the Squeeky Clean Furry Archive, and hosted on his site, Rat.org. At that time it was little more than an FTP server, although it developed later.

At one point, a large proportion of the art uploaded to the SCFA was strongly influenced by Sonic the Hedgehog. Eventually, people got sick of so much derivative artworkfact, and Sonic-based material was banned, to the complaints of some of those who had been uploading it.

By 1998, Rat wanted the site to have its own domain (previously it was at rat.org/yerf). Rat chose Yerf because, being a generic term, the name could stay the same no matter what direction the site took. At that time it was generally accepted to mean "a noise foxes made", and yerf.com was not taken, so Rat registered it.

Yerf
The name change to Yerf and the re-branding occurred in 1998. When Rat moved to California, he was no longer able to keep his server up, and so it moved to Tugrik's purrsia.com server in late September 1998.

On 10 July 1998, Rat handed over front end administration of the site to Scotty Arsenault - it had previously been run in part by Jedd Marten. In late 2001 Scotty handed administration and the server over to Dingo.

Over time, the quality standards got stricter, and artists who were previously members were grandfathered in, which became a regular cause of complaint for those who either felt that artwork by the grandfathered artists was inadequate, or (more often) people who had been rejected who looked to this art as an excuse to complain about double standards. Another complaint was the speed of application processing, due in part to the time required to review and the limited pool of reviewers.

The crash
On 27 December 2004, Yerf's hard disk signaled a failure. Initial hopes for a quick fix were soon dashed, and eventually it became clear that all of the data had been lost, although over $2500 was raised in donations for data recovery. Worse, the hard disk contained the only copy of the Yerf archive software.

The restoration
On August 2005, Yerf was in the process of being rebuilt around a new core, the Squeeky Clean Art Archive. Members were allowed to post images on the community LiveJournal instead. The forums were also re-opened. The intention was to re-post the artwork once the core was back up, as some users had saved copies of the site before the crash.

On 11 November 2005, most of the art from the original archive was reposted in a "read only" database, displaying first artist names, then thumbnail pages in each artist's directory of the art arranged chronologically, and then finally the image. Final page layouts and structure were to be determined while work continued on the new gallery software. A wiki page coordinating the process of restoring the few artists, images, and descriptions which were lost in the crash was put online at the same time.

On 24 November 2005 (American Thanksgiving) the new gallery software's code-base was placed online on a development resource site, and coders of all stripes were sought for further development. Design goals for the new site software were to preserve the clean page layouts and simple navigation of the original layout, avoiding the design excesses of other larger archive sites. One focus of interest was the creation of a strong, speedy peer review system to address previous criticisms of Yerf as being slow to respond to requests for new users.

On 20 January 2006, the site was declared officially open, if not complete. Old artists gained access to the site over the following week.

The second crash
In July 2006, Yerf went down again, came back up the same month, then back down again. No known hardware issues exist, with software suspected of being the culprit. People continued to wait in hope of even seeing Yerf up again, but the foundation that made Yerf so great in the past had started to crack, with several artists also demanding that their accounts and galleries be taken down, even if Yerf comes back up.

On October 16, 2006, Yerf became operational once again. On March 2, 2007, it went down, with a statement from Dingo that it might be 'the end'.

Archival project
On August 4, 2007, Seurat of ArtSpots announced the Yerf Historical Archive; a project intended to create a browsable archive of Yerf (from 1996 to 2004) for posterity. Yerf artists were invited to contact the ArtSpots administration, as the Archive only features artists who give permission for their art to be included.

Domain name
In or around July 2008, Yerf founder Rat repossessed the art archive last known domain name, yerf.com, originally registered under his name. He had retired from administration of the site ten years previously, stating that he would "as an advisor with technical things, but as far as all the decisions on who gets on, what gets deleted, and the general direction the site goes, that's all up to [ Scotty Arsenault ].In his announcement, Rat stated he would "still retain DNS on the name yerf.com, so I could always pull the plug if I think they're taking it in bad direction".

In a post on a temporary forum, Rat explained that "I've had enough of watching my creation dragged through the mud like this, he took everyone's donations before, and the server still never came online. I can never tell people I started yerf.com since it has such a bad name now. [...] Yerf is mine, he only succeeded at ruining it when I let him run it, so I'm taking it back."

The domain name was ultimately returned to Dingo, but now redirects to the Yerf Historical Archive.

Yerf 2.0
Unreferenced-section
Yerf is being completely revamped for 2012, though it will not be the same as it was before. It will return as an online art improvement site and online art college, devoid of the furry stipulation. It will be community governed, similar to craigstlist' style of government. Dingo will still own the site, but is taking a copletely hands-off approach, letting others work on the coding and the politics. Rat (aka Paul Hurley) will have nothing to do with the new project.

Dingo is known as Chad Brown.

Dingo is actually looking for programmers (Perl, PHP, and mySQL, or anything you're good at).. For the Yerf revival. He has an outlook he'd like the site to be, but beyond that he doesn't want to involve himself unless needed. Please, if you have anything to offer.. Email him at dingoatratorg@gmail.com.

But know he plans on Yerf 2.0 being far beyond furry.

Anything would be appreciated. He really wants to revive this, with very little involvement by him since he has a lot of stigma against his name.

If anybody has any suggestions, please email him. He's willing to listen.

This led to claims of elitism, which were (to an extent) ignored, as the majority of community members supported at least some level of quality filtering. Complaints about the speed of the review process were also frequent, due to the difficulty of getting qualified reviewers who could spare the time and effort to review submissions.

Controversy
Although a user called RobinLion warned peoplefact not to donate any money after the initial crash, as Yerf would "most likely never come back,"fact and the money would instead "be spent on everything but Yerf,"fact over $2500 was raised in donations.
Volunteers who brought Yerf back up several times never received anything from their efforts, nor was the money ever refunded.fact

Actually, over $6000 was raised, and it was all spent on a complete new server and server hosting costs. The rest didn't dissapear. A whole new server was bought for the server hosting.

Hosting Yerf for years cost "Dingo" $150 per month, it was hard to handle.
Yerf was probably the furry fandom's best known exclusively non-adult art archive.

As of 2009, the domain yerf.com redirects to the Yerf Historical Archive, hosted by ArtSpots.
