'''ChatFurry''' is a free, browser-based [[furry]] [[live chat community]].

== Overview ==

Founded in 2018, ChatFurry provides an anonymous, welcoming space where furries of all species, backgrounds, and identities can connect, [[role play]], and share creative content in real time — with no account, no download, and no signup required.

ChatFurry is built around '''species dens''' — dedicated live chat rooms organised by furry species, interest, and identity. Users can enter as a guest using only a [[fursona]] name, or create a free account to unlock fursona profiles, chat history, and custom username colours.

The platform operates 24/7 with human moderation and maintains a strictly [[SFW]] (safe for work) policy across all public rooms. It describes itself as a [[furry Discord]] alternative built exclusively for the furry fandom.

== Slovakia Flagdiv doesn't exist ==
Hello, I keep trying to add a Slovak furry convention to a bunch of sites, but the "SVK" or "SLO" or "SK" flagdiv won't work and defaults back to the Italian flag.

== Filter Blocking My Website ==

Hello. I was trying to add my website to my [[Threyon]] article, but the spam filter blocked me. Unfortunately, I cannot post it here, either as the same problem occurs. DX Please contact me at threyon@gmail.com so I can send you the address.
--[[User:Threyon|Threyon]] 19:40, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
:Hi Threyon. I did some research on this, and it appears that Wikicities maintains a [http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/Spam_Blacklist Spam Blacklist], which I am guessing you may have run afoul of. Check the list and see if your site is listed there; if it is, leave a comment at [http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/Talk:Spam_Blacklist Talk:Spam Blacklist] to request and justify removal from the list. If your domain is not on that list, let us know (perhaps write it out like "www dot notreallyspam dot com"?) and we'll see if we can figure out what's causing the problem. --[[User:DuncanDaHusky|Duncan da Husky]] 16:46, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

== Problems with variable/value inheritance ==

I can't seem to get any pages to inherit the 'bot' state from their parent (that is, the page they were linked from). The reason could lie within the fact that the pages linked from it are given in this format: '/wiki/pagetitle' rather than this one: '/index.php?title=pagetitle', and from what I gather the 'bot mode' only works if the URL is shown in the latter format (I guess this has to do with PHP-applets and stuff, which I honestly don't have a clue how works :).

Does anyone know of a solution for this? --[[User:MKerris|MKerris]] 18:21, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

== Stub Deletion ==

Greetings. My name is ''[removed]''. I see there is an entry in your database under my name. I wish to have it deleted and blocked from further edits/additions. I am a very private individual in real life and do not wish a connection between my RL identity and that of my fandom avatars. Please help me out. Thank you.

:Would renaming the page to your furry name and removing all reference to your real name be an acceptable comprimise? --[[User:Rat|Rat]] 07:38, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

::I have done this. Hopefully that should be sufficient. :-) --{{UT|GreenReaper}} 08:14, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

== Page creation ==

Alright... I've looked up and down and all over this thing and cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to simply make a brand new article. Specfically a character article in the "(species) Character" section. I know how to make a new article in Wikipedia, but this thing is baffling me! Help?

:There are various ways:
* Link to the article from another article, then click the red link (do it in a preview or in the sandbox if you don't want the link to last)
* Search for an article and click the red link when it doesn't come up
* Type it directly into the URL box and go to that page, then click edit
:How did you do it on Wikipedia? --{{UT|GreenReaper}} 00:09, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

::I would note a nifty feature that was in the [http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Archived_Wikia_news_box_messages Wikicities/Wikia News Box] a few weeks ago: [http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Inputbox The inputbox]. This question seems to be common enough that perhaps we could implement something similar on WikiFur and feature it on [[WikiFur:Community Central|Community Central]]? --[[User:DuncanDaHusky|Duncan da Husky]] 01:07, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

== Image copyrights ==

I was just wondering... [[:Image:KaloFoxfire.JPG]] is a image commissioned from an artist ([[Foux]]) by me, and then edited slightly (cropped). What copyright(s) would it fall under? Are there any special tags I need to add to the image? [[User:KaloFoxfire|KaloFoxfire]] 19:56, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

:It is under the artist's copyright. The cropping is a trivial modification that does not affect this. However, most commissions operate under the (often implicit) agreement that the image may be used by the commissioner to represent the character concerned, at least in non-profit ways. You should use the <nowiki>{{fursona}}</nowiki> tag on the image description page to signify this.

:Also, to make a ''link'' to an image, put a : in front of the Image: - <nowiki>[[:Image:KaloFoxfire.JPG]]</nowiki>. --{{UT|GreenReaper}} 21:27, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

== Trouble changing an article name ==

I'm trying to change an article name, but the request keeps timing out. I'd like to change the page on [[Fat furs]] to a more technical term (Lipophilia) before explaining in further detail what that particular group of furs is all about. Perhaps you could help me by manually changing the title? Thanks!

--[[User:Rourkie|Rourkie]] 15:02, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

:I'd be happy to help with this, but I did have a question: would this be a case where perhaps an interwiki link to the Wikipedia entry on [[Wikipedia:Fat fetishism|fat fetishism]] might be a better approach? Since lipophilia isn't a uniquely furry paraphilia, I think an argument can be made that we don't need an article exclusively about it on WikiFur.----[[User:DuncanDaHusky|DuncanDaHusky]]([[User talk:DuncanDaHusky|talk]]) 15:31, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

== [[Kyle Fox]] ==

I do not wish to have my information on this website. I tried to remove it but you called it an act of vandalism. Please remove my information post haste.

:This has been done, in accordance with our [[WikiFur:Personal information|personal information policy]]. Your previous action was reverted because you gave no edit summary noting your identity and request for exclusion. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 02:28, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

== Category Issues? ==

I try to add [[Riverside Players]] to Category:Humor but when I enter the Wikicode for the category in, <nowiki>[[Category:Humor]]</nowiki> nothing appears in preview. I checked the docs, and my syntax appears to be correct. Thanks much. [[User:Brian Ryans|Brian Ryans]] 02:54, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

:Are you sure? It appears at the bottom of the page, beneath the edit summary box and everything else, in the category bar. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 03:29, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

::So it won't show in the preview, but will show on the saved page? [[User:Brian Ryans|Brian Ryans]] 03:34, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

:::No, it ''should'' show up on the preview, but you have to look below where all the rest of the output is to see it, after the place where you might think the preview had stopped (that is, after the edit box and the summary and the preview buttons and everything else). This is assuming you're on the Monobook skin - if not, it'll probably be at the top instead. In Monobook, the category bar ''always'' appears at the very bottom of the page. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 03:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

== OC? ==

What is an OC session?

:I believe this refers to [[Wikipedia:OpenCanvas|OpenCanvas]], the free version of which allows for collaborations between artists via the Internet. It's rather popular amongst [[anime]]-style artists, and [[furry]] artists often utilize it as well. [[User:CarlFox|Carl Fox]] 19:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

== Wikipedia links? ==

I'm trying to add links to Wikipedia on my page, [[Korrok]], and I can't get it to stop showing "Wikipedia:" in front of the text I want to link. I've even tried copying and pasting from another user's article where it shows up correctly.

Can someone advise what I'm doing wrongly? --[[User:Korrok|Korrok]] 09:55, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

:Fortunately, Mediawiki has a good structure for this. Use a link like this:
:<nowiki>[[Wikipedia:Example|Example]]</nowiki>
:That should do the job :-) ----[[User:DuncanDaHusky|DuncanDaHusky]]([[User talk:DuncanDaHusky|talk]]) 12:48, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Excellent - thanks! I'll watch for that one in future. --[[User:Korrok|Korrok]] 09:22, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

== How to prevent someone from editing my Wikifur page ==

Someone who appears to have a vendetta against me because of a comment I made in his LJ is putting this quote on the Wikifur page I created that I've tried to remove, only for him to constantly put it back. How can I block him from editing my page? Thanks.

--[[User:Jeremy, the Duke of Otterland|Jeremy, the Duke of Otterland]]

:Firstly, please be aware that it is not "your page". It is "the page about you". The page which is "your page" is [[User:Jeremy, the Duke of Otterland]], which is typically written in the first person by you, and will generally only be edited in situations where someone is specifically causing a problem or is making a personal attack on another contributor. The page ''about'' you is written by in the third person by '''everyone'''. The plus side is that it has some appearance of impartiality, and with some cause . . . because the downside is that it reflects people's opinions of you, which may not always be to your credit.

:The best way to avoid this is to avoid deliberately pissing other people off so they don't feel the need to raise an issue about it in the first place. :-) Failing that, note your objection on the discussion page attached to the article, and others can figure out how best to present the appropriate information while retaining a [[Wikipedia:Neutral point of view|neutral]]. We can usually figure out a way that works for everyone.

:I've made an edit that makes it clear that the quote is a reference for a specific part of the article, and linked it with appropriate text. Perhaps this is a good solution for this particular problem?

:Personally, I don't feel politics is much to do with [[furry fandom]], and would prefer to keep it out of the site as much as possible. There are [[wikia:Campaigns|other places for that]].

== Untitled! comic article. ==

Hello, I'm the creator of the webcomic ''[[Untitled!]]'' and I don't particularly want it listed on this site. Is there any way I can have the article removed?
--13:10, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

:Hi there! In a few words: No, because it's a public work of interest to the furry community, but if you don't want your real name there you can replace it with a fan name.

:In more words: Our policy is that past or present public creative works that appear to relate to [[furry fandom]] should be listed, regardless or whether or not the creator is a member (past or present) of the fandom or associated communities, and regardless of the author's wishes. Looking at it (and having read it in the past), I would say it meets these criteria.

:We '''do''' have a [[WikiFur:Personal information|personal information policy]] that relates to information about yourself (such as your real name, who you are, and where you live). If you wish to be excluded under this policy, or to request that the page about you be editable only by yourself and administrators (see the policy for details) then you may request that separately. Given the anonymous nature I would request that you send an email to greenreaper AT hotmail DOT com confirming it from an account that can be identified as yours (such as your yahoo account) if you wish this.

:The policy runs into problems when it comes to identifying comics, as it seems inappropriate to list a comic without reference to its author. This has been discussed previously at [[Talk:Guardian Knights]]. However if you do not want your real name listed on this website you could replace it with a fan name that is known as yours - twapa, for example. The intention of this would be that people could find out your contributions to the fandom, but people who are not members of the fandom would not find the page by searching from your real-life name.

:I hope this answers the above. If you have further questions, feel free to reply here or to email me. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 13:34, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

:Also, I would note that if any of the information is inaccurate or incomplete, you are welcome to correct or add to it - we have no policy against comic creators making contributions to the articles about the comics, or about themselves. I ''would'' request that you do not remove accurate information other than as specified above. :-) --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 13:41, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

... Fine, whatever. Leave the article up. I don't care. *rolls eyes*.
--23:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC) 23:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

::OK. For what it's worth, you may find you actually do get visitors from it - our comic archives appear to be rather popular (though I don't know how many people go through to the U's :-). --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 02:48, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

== Furry forum links ==

Hi...I was wondering how I can get my forum hotlinked here like Yiffy.net's is please?

:Hi there! Do you mean you want a page like the one linked here: [[Yiffy.net]]? You can do this by creating a page for the name of the forum that you are on. The [[Help:Editing|editing help page]] tells you how to go about this (the third item down). You should make sure to click the edit button on the Yiffy.net page and look at how it is constructed, as this will help you make a page about your own site. Note that if you want it to be put in the [[:Category:Forums|forums category]], you must put <nowiki>[[Category:Forums]]</nowiki> at the bottom of the page you create.

I hope this helps - if you need more help, or if I've misunderstood, just ask here or on my talk page. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 07:01, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

== FuzzBall Muck related commands? ==

I noticed that some articles (specifically [[Age-locked]]) reference fairly common MUCK commands ([[@lock]], [[exit]]s), but there are no articles created for such. Would it be appropriate to copy from the original helpfiles, if an appropriate credit is given? Or would it be better to paraphrase or write something almost entirely from scratch? Just trying not to plagarize. [[User:Shira|Shira]] 04:29, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:All text that goes on WikiFur is licensed under the [[GFDL]]. If you don't own the copyright to the text concerned, and it is not already licensed as such and has not been placed in the public domain, then unfortunately it is not legal for you to submit it. I would suggest writing it from scratch - that way, at least we're ''sure'' it's perfectly legal. :-) --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 04:36, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:: Hmm... would that fall under the "webspace provider" clause of [[WikiFur:What WikiFur is not]]?

:::"Webspace provider" is really intended to avoid people making their homepages here, using us as an image gallery, etc. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 06:08, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:: I'm not saying that this proposed article(s) is/are a bad idea, I'm just curious at what point do we draw the line between an article about MUCK commands, and something that looks like a technical reference unique to this Wiki? --[[User:Dmuth|Douglas Muth]] 04:46, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

::: Well, I did a bit of looking around, and [http://www.rdwarf.com/users/mink/muckman/index.html MINK's mirror of the FuzzballMUCK manual] says that it "may be freely copied, distributed, quoted, and archived," but I can understand why having articles for individual commands is getting into a grey area.. it's something that is furry-related, as MUCKs are quite common, but also has resources available online. Even more confusing, at least for me, is that some other slightly technical MUCK-related things (ie [[Action]]s) have pages that seem to add little that wouldn't be explained in that help file, while others lack any information at all within WikiFur. I just am unsure which is the better course of action here. [[User:Shira|Shira]] 05:12, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

:::It ''is'' a valid concern that we don't want to be a MUCK reference guide (do we? I think the ones that exist are sufficient . . .). However, the fact that they have been included in an article suggests that they are of particular interest in relation to that article. We could try linking directly to a MUCK reference, or we could build our own articles specifically for those entries. I think the latter is preferable with a focus on the encyclopediaic aspect - for example, ''why'' you might age-lock a room, the history of how that feature came about, etc. It could then link to the documentation. That seems to be the best approach. --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 06:08, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

== REMOVAL WikiFur entry for Flinthoof Ponypal ==

Hello!

I was alerted that a page was created without my knowledge or authorization regarding my persona, Flinthoof. I request that the entry be removed and all links in WikiFur that refer to the character name be removed / blocked. I do not wish to be associated with WikiFur or any of the ads being listed in the sidebar (mostly for pornography, sexual fetishes, and other unsavory things).

Please remove the entry as soon as possible. If I wish to have an entry, I will create one myself.

Thank you.

:That's odd - I go to the page and the only such ad I can see is "Yiff Hentai Art Galleries - Buy New & Used Goods on eBay Yiff Hentai Art Galleries for sale!" (eBay does the oddest adds . . .). I'm guessing that Google can't do more focussed ads, as the article is rather short.

:I will contact you privately to confirm your removal request in accordance with our [[WikiFur:Personal information|personal information policy]], and copy this discussion to the [[Talk:Flinthoof Ponypal|talk page for the article]]. '''321Furry.com''' (321chat.com/furry) is a free, browser-based [[furry fandom|furry]] chat community and live chatroom hosted under [[321Chat.com]]. The parent platform, 321Chat.com, was established in 2002, making it one of the web's oldest continuously operating free chat room services. 321Furry provides an open space for fans of [[anthropomorphic]] animal characters to connect, socialise, share [[fursona]] identities, and coordinate attendance at [[furry convention|furry conventions]] worldwide — with no account, no download, and no signup required for guest access.

The platform is operated by its founder and webmaster, known to the community as '''Greg''', who accumulated over two decades of experience building and moderating online chat communities. It serves a wide cross-section of the [[furry fandom]], including new fans still exploring the community, established furries, [[fursuiter|fursuiters]], convention-goers, [[roleplay|roleplayers]], and furry artists.

== Overview ==

321Furry is built around open, real-time chat rooms accessible to anyone with a browser. Users may participate immediately as a guest using only a chosen nickname or [[fursona]] name, or create a free registered account to unlock additional features such as a persistent username, profile picture, and fursona description visible to other chatters.

The platform operates as part of the broader 321Chat network, which hosts rooms for teens, adults, seniors, and various interest communities. The furry room represents one of the most culturally distinctive communities within the 321Chat ecosystem, operating on a strictly SFW (safe for work) basis and enforcing community standards through an active volunteer moderation team.

== History ==

=== Origins (2002) ===

The history of 321Furry is inseparable from that of its parent platform, '''321Chat.com'''. Founded in '''2002''' by its webmaster Greg, 321Chat launched as a free, multi-room chat site built on the philosophy that anyone on the internet should be able to join a chat room without registration, payment, or software installation. This frictionless access model distinguished it from many contemporaries of the early 2000s web, which typically required email sign-up or the installation of Java applets and dedicated client software.

In the early-to-mid 2000s, free chat was dominated by major internet portals such as Yahoo! Chat and AOL Chat Rooms. 321Chat carved a niche by remaining independent, consistently moderated, and community-driven — qualities that proved durable as those portal services shut down through the late 2000s and early 2010s.

=== Furry section expansion ===

As 321Chat expanded its room catalogue, a dedicated '''Furry Chat room''' was introduced to serve fans of anthropomorphic characters — a community that had been growing online since the mid-1990s through forums, [[MUCK|MUCKs]], [[Usenet]] newsgroups, and early fandom websites. The furry room predates the mid-2000s consolidation of furry fandom around major platforms such as [[Fur Affinity]] (launched 2005) and the founding of [[WikiFur]] (also 2005).

At the time of its introduction, real-time furry chat was primarily confined to text-based environments such as [[FurryMUCK]] (founded 1990) and [[IRC]] channels. A browser-based furry chat room with open guest access addressed a significant gap in the available social infrastructure for casual, spontaneous furry interaction on the open web.

=== Community growth ===

Growth of 321Furry's community was gradual and organic rather than rapid. In commentary cited in 2024, observers noted: ''"321 didn't start off with 300 members — it took them a long time, and Greg, webmaster/owner of 321, had 20 years experience; he had to learn a lot of stuff to help the community to grow."''

This multi-decade accumulation of experience in community management, moderation, and web infrastructure gave 321Furry a stability that many shorter-lived furry platforms lacked. Where numerous furry-specific websites and chat services of the 2000s and 2010s launched with enthusiasm only to shut down within a few years — due to hosting costs, community drama, or operator burnout — 321Furry persisted as part of a platform with the institutional knowledge to survive successive shifts in the broader internet landscape.

During this period, 321Furry served as a discovery and socialisation layer for the fandom: a place where newcomers could lurk anonymously before identifying themselves as furries, and where established fans could coordinate convention attendance, share [[fursuit]] progress, and introduce new members to the wider ecosystem of furry websites and art platforms.

=== Modern era (2010s–present) ===

Through the 2010s, the broader landscape of furry online community shifted significantly with the rise of [[Discord]] as a dominant real-time platform and large subreddits consolidating fandom discussion. Despite this, 321Furry retained a distinct niche: open-web, no-account, browser-based access that Discord and subreddits cannot replicate. Users not yet comfortable identifying publicly as furries could participate pseudonymously without creating a persistent, linkable account identity.

As of 2026, 321Chat describes its user base as spanning over one hundred countries, indicating a genuinely global reach for the furry room. Newer furry chat platforms, including [[ChatFurry.com]] and [[FurryChat.net]], launched in the 2020s explicitly citing 321Furry's longevity as a benchmark for sustainable furry chat community development.

== Features ==

* Anonymous guest access with a self-chosen nickname or [[fursona]] name — no email or personal information required
* Real-time web-based chat — no download, no app installation, works directly in the browser
* Registered account option offering persistent username, fursona profile picture, and fursona description
* GIF and emoji support for rich in-chat expression
* In-chat image sharing for art, fursona reference sheets, and convention photos

* Optional VIP membership tier with additional platform privileges
* Mobile-compatible interface — fully functional on smartphones and tablets without an app
* Active volunteer moderation with a community code of conduct; SFW by default
* Global user base spanning over 100 countries

== Community ==

321Furry hosts a broad cross-section of the [[furry fandom]] and describes itself as a space for fans of "fictional anthropomorphic characters with human personalities and characteristics." The platform is notable for:

* Requiring no email address or personal information to begin chatting
* Serving as an entry point for fans new to furry culture who are not yet ready to commit to a persistent online identity
* Providing a space to connect with other furries before attending local meetups or major conventions such as [[Anthrocon]] and [[Midwest FurFest]]
* Supporting [[fursona]] identity through dedicated profile fields and avatar upload
* Maintaining a SFW environment accessible to furries of all ages
* Operating continuously since 2002 — one of the oldest surviving open-web furry chat spaces

== Moderation ==

321Chat's stated moderation philosophy is to allow chatters to "speak freely and have fun" while moderators step in specifically when trolls appear, rather than applying blanket content restrictions. The furry room is moderated by volunteers from the community under the supervision of the platform's administrative team. The platform enforces community standards around harassment, inappropriate content, and off-topic behaviour.

== VIP Membership ==

321Furry offers an optional VIP membership that unlocks additional features and platform privileges beyond the free guest and registered account tiers. The core chat experience — guest access, real-time messaging, and basic profile features — remains free for all users. VIP status is purchased via the parent 321Chat.com platform.

== In Furry Web History ==

321Furry's 2002 founding places it within the second generation of furry online community infrastructure, following the earliest telnet-based and Usenet-era furry spaces of the late 1980s and early 1990s. [[FurryMUCK]], founded in '''1990''', is among the oldest surviving furry online environments. The first dedicated furry convention, [[ConFurence]], ran from '''1989 to 2003''' in southern California — its lifespan spanning the period from the emergence of furry as a recognised fandom to the rise of web-native furry community platforms.

321Chat's 2002 founding placed it at a pivotal moment: after the peak of AOL and Yahoo! chat room culture but before the social media era defined by Facebook (2004), Fur Affinity (2005), and later Twitter and Tumblr. It belongs to the same generation of independent, community-driven web platforms that built real audiences without algorithmic amplification or venture capital funding.

Cynx: Add furry social platforms for furry fandom

[[File:Anthro_vixen.jpg|thumb|right|An [[anthropomorphic]] vixen]]
{{TOCright}}
'''Furry fandom''', also known as '''furrydom''', '''furridom''', '''fur fandom''' or '''furdom''', refers to the ''[http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fandom fandom]'' for the ''furry genre'' of literature, art and entertainment. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of [[artist]]s, [[writer]]s, [[role play]]ers and general fans of the furry art forms who gather on the net and at [[convention]]s.

Members of the furry fandom, known as ''[[furry fan]]s'', [[furfan]]s, ''furries'', or ''furs'', particularly enjoy media that includes fictional [[anthropomorphic]] [[animal]] characters with [[human]] personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walking on two legs, and wearing clothing.

Characters that [[morph]] between human and animal form are also considered by some to be part of the genre. Even certain superheroes with animal derived powers are considered of furry interest by some fans. The general idea being a combination of human and animal attributes, for which there is no documented science regarding what degrees of mixture are required. Even characters like [[Wikipedia:Josie and the Pussycats|Josie and the Pussycats]] are considered of interest to furry fandom, though they only wear costumes with animal ears and [[tail]]s.<ref>[http://www.xydexx.com/anthrofurry/furries.htm Invasion of the Furries] - Description of furry fandom with Josie And The Pussy Cats reference.</ref>

==The furry genre==
===Definition===

The furry genre (sometimes referred to as a meta-genre) is based on the ''idea'' of [[fantasy]] animal characters, rather than any one type of fiction. Any title in any form of media can be considered relative to the furry genre simply by having a fantasy animal character in it. Such characters are most often seen in cartoons, [[comic]]s, [[science fiction]], allegorical novels, Gothic [[horror]] movies, commercials and [[video game]]s.

Outside the fandom, the most common term used to describe such characters is ''anthropomorphic'' (a word derived from the Greek; ''Anthropos Morphe'', literally meaning ''Human Form''). Those within the fandom prefer the term ''furry'' - hence the name ''furry fandom''. Other terms for these types of characters are ''[[funny animal]]'', ''[[talking animal]]'', or ''[[kemono]]'' in Japan, although each of these has subtle differences in meaning.

===History of the Furry Fandom===
:''See main article: [[History]]''
In the earlier days of the Furry Fandom, fans used to gather mostly at [[science fiction]], [[fantasy]], and comic conventions before the [[furry parties]] broke out into full-fledged [[furry]] conventions. The fandom for furry characters traces its organization back to a science fiction convention in 1980,<ref>''[http://www.flayrah.com/4117/retrospective-illustrated-chronology-furry-fandom-1966-1996 An Illustrated Chronology of Furry Fandom, 1966–1996]'' - [[Fred Patten]], [[Flayrah]] (15 July 2012)</ref> when a drawing of a character from [[Steve Gallacci]]’s Albedo started a discussion of anthropomorphic characters in science fiction novels, spawning a discussion group that met at various science fiction and comics conventions.

As the Internet became more accessible, it became the most popular means for furry fans to keep in touch and share their artistic efforts. This gained the fandom higher visibility and it began to grow rapidly.

Virtual environments, such as [[MUD|MUCK]]s, soon became the most popular places on the net for furry fans to meet and communicate. One of the oldest and largest MUCKs in existence is [[FurryMUCK]]. One of the newest virtual environments to attract furry fans is [[Second Life]].

Near the beginning of the ’80s, the furry genre enjoyed the first explosion of popularity it had seen since the 1930s. Furry characters littered the animation world as well as toy stores. But there was also adult furry entertainment.

Today, those furry fans who have discovered the large concentration of fellow fans on the net have joined with them to create the virtual society that is the collective furry community. Other furry fans, particularly the computer illiterate, remain isolated in their interest with little to no awareness that there is an organized community for fans of the furry genre.

==The Furry community==
[[File:GR_FC2007_fursuit_post-parade_photoshoot.jpg|thumb|250px|right|[[Fursuiter]]s at [[Further Confusion 2007]] [[fursuit parade]]]]
The furry community, referred to by many as furry fandom, or just the fandom, is the virtual universe inhabited by all those who refer to themselves as "Furries."

It is a separate entity from what many fans of furry entertainment mean when they use the term furry fandom. To a traditional furry fan, furry fandom means fans of furry characters, period. But the community encompasses a great deal more than just the fandom for furry characters. It includes elements of religion, lifestyle and philosophy.

"Furriness" is the action of doing anything related to the furry character of a person.
===Online Furry Chat Communities===

Online chat platforms have become one of the primary ways furries connect, socialise, and collaborate within the fandom. These communities range from large general-purpose platforms adapted by furries to dedicated furry-first chat services built specifically for the fandom.

====Types of Furry Chat Platforms====

* '''Species dens''' — dedicated chat rooms organised by furry species, where wolves, foxes, dragons, and other species can gather with their own kind
* '''Roleplay rooms''' — text-based [[Furry roleplay|furry roleplay]] spaces for collaborative storytelling across genres including fantasy, sci-fi, and slice-of-life
* '''Art sharing rooms''' — live chat spaces where furry artists share commissions, [[fursona]] designs, and [[furry art]] and receive real-time feedback
* '''LGBTQ+ spaces''' — dedicated rooms for [[LGBTQ+ furries|queer furries]], including trans-inclusive, ace-friendly, and non-binary welcoming communities
* '''Gaming rooms''' — furry gaming communities for MMOs, [[VRChat]] furry groups, and gaming squads
* '''Safe spaces for younger furries''' — moderated SFW rooms specifically for teen and younger furry fans

====Notable Furry Chat Platforms====

'''[[ChatFurry]]''' ([https://chatfurry.com chatfurry.com]) is one of the most active dedicated furry chat communities, offering free anonymous access with no signup or download required. It features species dens, [[Furry roleplay|roleplay rooms]], [[furry art]] sharing, [[LGBTQ+ furries|LGBTQ+]] spaces, and safe moderated rooms for teen furries. See [https://chatfurry.com/furry-roleplay-chat.html Furry Roleplay Chat] and [https://chatfurry.com/lgbtq-furry-chat.html LGBTQ+ Furry Chat].

'''[[FurryMUCK]]''' is one of the oldest furry online communities, a text-based [[MU*]] environment founded in 1990 that pioneered online furry socialisation and roleplay.

'''[[Discord]]''' servers have become widely used by furry fan communities, with thousands of furry-themed servers covering species, roleplay, art, gaming, and regional communities, though Discord itself is a general-purpose platform not built specifically for the fandom.

====Fursona and Identity in Chat====

Most furry chat participants represent themselves through their [[fursona]] — their personal anthropomorphic animal character. Many dedicated furry chat platforms allow users to set a fursona name, species, and avatar without requiring real personal information, supporting the fandom's culture of creative identity expression.

For a guide to creating a fursona for use in furry chat communities, see [https://chatfurry.com/how-to-make-a-fursona.html How to Make a Fursona].

====Safety in Furry Chat====

Reputable furry chat platforms maintain community safety through 24/7 human moderation, SFW-only public rooms, age-separated spaces, and community reporting tools. Dedicated safe chat spaces for teen furries aged 13–17 are available on platforms such as [[ChatFurry]]. See [https://chatfurry.com/safe-furry-chat-for-teens.html Safe Furry Chat for Teens].
===Furry lifestyle===
: ''See article: [[Furry lifestyle]]''
The most commonly stated interest cited among members of the community, other than an enjoyment of furry entertainment, is a sense some may have of personally identifying with a certain kind of animal.

This is a relatively common aspect of human nature. Many people may feel an affinity for a certain type of animal. Marketers of collectibles have been creating products for people with such feelings for generations. Though it has rarely been something one had an open atmosphere in which to explore and get more deeply in touch with. The furry community, through its many virtual role-play environments, provides this avenue for exploration into why certain people feel their particular affinity.

Some may view animals with a kind of religious reverence reminiscent of [[Buddhism]], [[Shamanism]] or [[Otherkin]]. They may feel that they are the reincarnation of an animal, or that an animal spirit watches over them.

===Creativity===
[[File:DealersDenAC2006.jpg|thumb|250px|right|[[Dealers den]] at [[Anthrocon 2006]]]]
Because the furry genre is widely considered to be a children’s market, there is a considerable lack of furry entertainment specifically geared to adult-aged audiences. The community of mostly adult-aged furry fans that has formed around the genre is particularly dedicated to filling the need for such products through fan creativity.

Content available from furry fans on the internet and at conventions covers a wide range of interests, including all manner of fantasy, philosophy, sex, politics, religion, and lifestyle.

The genre is considered to be so versatile that it can extend into just about any form of creativity, from things as simple as recipe books with anthropomorphic illustrations <ref>[http://www.ozfoxes.com/cat3.htm Sweet Treats] - an example of a furry cookbook.</ref> to technical creations as complicated as interactive furry companions for your desktop.<ref>[http://www.foxee.net/ Foxee] - example of an interactive character.</ref> Other forms of furry craftsmanship include the creation of ''flash animation'' <ref>[http://www.illwillpress.com/ Foamy The Squirrel] - example of a flash animation character.</ref> and [[fursuits]].

But by far the most prolific output of furry fandom is the artwork. Furry artwork produced by the fandom ranges from basic cartooning to highly detailed works fit for hanging in galleries. Furry artists also create a wide variety of comic strips. The subject matter of this artwork being as flexible as any other area of the furry arts, ranging from innocent depictions of cute furry characters suitable for all ages, to mature works that are age-restricted. There is also some writing in the furry fandom.

===Sociability===

Others may join the furry community simply because it is a free environment where one can form friendships without the normal social problems of having to hide one’s [[sexual orientation]]. It is also a place where some may come to find compassionate understanding and assistance with personal problems. The furry community prides itself on a concept of open-mindedness and tolerance.

===Fetishes===
: ''See article: [[Fetish]]''
The furry community also attracts furry-related fetishists who warm to the non-condemning atmosphere and the ability to express fantasies of a sexual nature that would rarely be tolerated anywhere else.

Surveys place the number of extreme fetishists in the community at a comparatively low percentage, though the few there are tend to be extremely visible on the net.

===Creativity beyond the furry genre===

Some creative members of the community create works that are not furry of nature. [[2, The Ranting Gryphon]] creates rants on real-world politics and the state of human society. [[Joe Strike]] has written film reviews for the ''New York Daily News''. [[Steven F. Scharff]] maintains a database on new country projects, "micronations" and independence and sedition movements. [[Tom Howling]] writes full-time about technology and science. A number of furry musical groups produce music without furry subject matter. Some furry online radio stations play popular music that rarely has furry subject matter. And some amateur filmmakers in the fandom create films that have no visible furry themes.

This sometimes brings the community unexpected positive attention, though it further confuses people as to just what the furry fandom is supposed to be about.

==Furry controversies==
===Defining the genre===
: ''See article: [[What is Furry?]]''
Historically, very little has been written about the concept of furry as a genre of entertainment. And the community itself sometimes has difficulty getting a grip on what the main object of the fandom is supposed to be. Consequently, some prominent members of the community may express ideas of limitation based on their personal taste in anthropomorphics. Others may feel that their taste in anthropomorphics are excluded by such limitations.

There are no written rules as to what types or levels of human and animal attributes are necessary for inclusion in the genre. The only noticeable defining factor seems to be that there be some kind of combination of the two. Thus, it is best to approach the genre with the broadest possible view, rather than being influenced by individuals expressing dissatisfaction with areas of the furry arts they personally don’t like.

===Misinformation===

Many people misunderstand the fandom due to a lack of non-prejudicial information being available. In many cases, the first things outsiders see of the fandom is sensationalistic [[List of media links|fiction on TV shows]]. Others may take note of the adult-themed art on the net and assume this is the whole point of the fandom.

===Sexuality===

The free atmosphere of acceptance in the furry community makes it far more likely for members to be open about their sexual preferences.<ref name="rust">[http://www.visi.com/~phantos/furrysoc.html The Sociology of Furry Fandom]. Retrieved October 19, 2006.</ref> As such, most [[non-furries]] believe that nearly all furry fans are [[gay]].<ref name="rust"/> Recent surveys suggest that the percentage of homosexuals and bisexuals in the fandom [[sexual preference|may be higher than in the general population]]. Furries have proposed various theories for this.

Confessions of more unusual sexuality and lifestyle have also been noted in the furry community, and though the majority of furry fans will attempt to be tolerant, certain sexual practices will stretch the tolerance of certain furry fans to the breaking point.

In particular, discussion of [[bestiality]] is a trigger for angry debate within the community. Many insist that absolute tolerance must be absolute, while others resent the association of the fandom with a practice that is not only illegal in many places but is considered by many to be a form of animal abuse. Because of these two hallmarks of the current fandom — tolerance and the protection of real-life animals — acceptance of bestialitists is a hotly contested topic of the furry community.{{citation needed}}

Another practice that sparks controversy from within the fandom itself is [[plushophilia]]. Though plushophilia is physically harmless, being confronted with it causes extreme reactions on both sides of the issue within the fandom — from total acceptance to outright disgust.

====Erotic furry art====
: ''See article: [[Furotica]]''
If one looks at movies like ''[[The Lion King]]'' and games like ''[[Star Fox]]'' as the main furry genre, and the erotic art coming out of the community as a parody of the main genre, a direct parallel to [[Wikipedia:anime|anime]] and [[Wikipedia:hentai|hentai]] can be seen as well as a parallel with the general fantasy genre and erotic fantasy art. Types of hentai might straddle both furry and non-furry genres. The major difference is that the output of furry titles by major companies is relatively small when compared to the output of other genres.

Thus it is easy to mistake the mature art aspect of furry fandom for being more prominent than in other fandoms. When, in reality, the amount of erotic content coming out of the furry community pales in comparison to the anime/manga erotic output, which is much better organized and even supported by the main industry.

Anime fans enjoy the availability of endless hours of erotic animation created by professional companies, and even the erotic manga comics created by anime fans display a level of professionalism that furry artists can not even begin to aspire to. Yet, this tends to not be a problem for anime fandom, as the high output of non-erotic anime keeps the erotic subgenre in perspective as parody. While with furry fandom, it is highly likely that the first output of the fandom an outsider will see will be something of an erotic nature or sexual humor art.<ref>[http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=furries&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2 A Google Images search for "furries" generates] [[furotica]] as its initial results.</ref>

===Fringe segments of the community===

Just about anyone with any kind of interest that can somehow be tied to furry can set up a new neighborhood in the furry community for that interest. For some reason, the furries who create these neighborhoods have a tendency to give them names that sound worse than the actual intent, and thus may generate prejudice or attract the wrong kind of attention.

* [[Babyfurs]] are interested in furry child characters.
* [[Nazi Furs]] are interested in furry World War 2 characters.
* [[Postfurry]]

===Furry hate groups===
: ''See article: [[Anti-furries]]''
Furry hate groups have been created that ridicule the fandom at every opportunity and continue the spread of various types of misinformation, largely based on overplaying activities that exist in the fringe areas of the community and have no direct relationship to the fandom.

It is the general assertion of fans that these hate groups are mistaken in their assumption that furry fandom is all about sexualizing animal characters and animal-related fetishes. It has also been confessed by certain furry haters that they attack furry fandom, not out of any belief that the furry fandom is any worse than other fandoms in these respects, but rather because it is much easier to get an entertaining reaction out of furries than it is to get a reaction out of [[Wikipedia:Star Trek fandom|Trekkies]] or [[Wikipedia:Otaku|Otaku]].

Thus, the anti-furry movement exists largely for entertainment value and should be taken with a grain of salt. Furries may even be seen to play along with furry hate groups, as some furries insist that it is important to maintain a sense of humor about such things. Indeed, there is hardly a fandom in existence that does not parody and laugh at its own idiosyncrasies and stereotypes.

===Self criticism===

The furry community also is sometimes criticized by its own for being too tolerant of various things, especially the over visibility of controversial fetishes.

Particularly for those who are only in the community because of an interest in furry cartoons, it may be found painful that the community feels free to associate them with things that seem completely unrelated to a fandom for furry characters.

Other furries will then turn on those who claim not to want to be associated with every controversial element in the community and accuse them of being a detriment to the stability of the community, often accompanied with accusations of Nazi behavior or being a [[Burned Fur]].

Over the years many furries have [[Leave The Fandom|left the fandom]] in a state of grief over such controversies and disputes.

===Unsympathetic media===
: ''See article: [[Timeline of media coverage]]''
[[Image:KageTalksToReportersAC2006.jpg|thumb|right|[[Uncle Kage]] talks to [[Wikipedia:KDKA-TV|KDKA-TV]] reporters]]
In years past, the only value the mainstream media has seen in furry fandom has been over-emphasis on the fetishists and lifestylers within the community. Many of those who were interviewed for such media portrayals claim they were deliberately misquoted. As a result, misunderstanding of the nature of the fandom has been widespread. However, this appears to be changing, as less sensational media sources are starting to take note of the community, which are more inclined to see interest in the fandom aspect. <ref>[http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/9383594/detail.html Furries Descend On Golden Triangle] - example of more favorable press coverage.</ref>

===Furry politics===

As with any type of community, even a virtual one, political issues will arise and certain people will champion them, attempting to attain a measure of power and control over the rest of the community. However, the community is seldom able to be united on any single issue. And most attempts to force change fall flat.

Political topics in the community can revolve around pushing tolerance for controversial segments of the community, people trying to put limits on the genre celebrated by the fandom, and those who wish to completely separate the furry community from any relationship with the mainstream entertainment industry.

A typical example of furry politics is the attempt to draw a distinction between a "furry comic" created by self-professed members of the fandom, and a traditional "funny animal comic," created by someone who has not acknowledged a connection to the fandom. This type of political ploy may cause a lot of heated debate, but in the end, there is no artistic difference between the two, and furry fans rarely stop to ask an artist’s affiliations before enjoying his work.

==Becoming mainstream ==

The '''mainstreaming''' of the [[furry fandom]] is a subject for ongoing debate. As the fandom grows and becomes more popular in the [[Wikipedia:mainstreaming|mainstream]], some furs worry about the fandom's popularity and the effect it will have on its image. It can ostensibly be argued that increased awareness and popularity of Furry in mainstream culture could result in increased public acceptance and lessened negativity towards the fandom. The alternative viewpoint, however, suggests that if Furry becomes too mainstream, it will lose its appeal and fail to attract and retain members to the fandom.

Furry roleplay

2026-05-31T03:49:32Z

Cynx:

'''Furry roleplay''' (also written as '''furry RP''' or '''furry roleplaying''') is a form of collaborative, text-based or voice-based storytelling within the [[furry fandom]] where participants take on the persona of their [[fursona]] or an original furry character. It is one of the most popular creative activities in the fandom and takes place across a wide range of online platforms, in-person events, and [[furry convention|furry conventions]].

== Overview ==

Furry roleplay combines elements of improvisational storytelling, character acting, and creative writing. Participants collaboratively build narratives, develop characters, and explore fictional worlds — all through the lens of anthropomorphic animal characters.

Unlike tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, furry roleplay is typically freeform, meaning there are no fixed rules, dice mechanics, or game masters required. Stories emerge organically through the back-and-forth of participants writing their characters' actions and dialogue in real time.

== Common Genres ==

Furry roleplay spans a wide range of genres and settings:

* '''Fantasy''' — medieval kingdoms, magic systems, dragon riders, and mythical furry worlds
* '''Sci-fi''' — space exploration, starship crews, alien furry civilisations
* '''Slice-of-life''' — everyday furry life, college settings, found family stories
* '''Adventure''' — quests, exploration, action-driven narratives
* '''Horror''' — survival scenarios, mystery, psychological storytelling
* '''Romance''' — character relationship development (SFW)
* '''Multi-genre''' — hybrid settings combining elements from multiple genres

== Where Furry Roleplay Happens ==

=== Online Chat Platforms ===

Text-based furry roleplay is widely practised on live chat platforms purpose-built for the fandom. These platforms offer dedicated roleplay rooms where participants can find RP partners and begin collaborative stories instantly.

'''[[ChatFurry]]''' (chatfurry.com) is one of the most active free furry roleplay chat communities, offering dedicated RP rooms for multiple genres including fantasy, sci-fi, slice-of-life, and adventure. It features anonymous guest access with no signup required and 24/7 moderation. See [https://chatfurry.com/furry-roleplay-chat.html Furry Roleplay Chat Rooms].

Other platforms where furry roleplay takes place include:
* [[Discord]] servers dedicated to furry RP
* [[Fur Affinity]] notes and journals
* [[FurryMUCK]] and other [[MU*]] environments
* Reddit communities such as r/FurryRP

=== Furry Conventions ===

[[Furry convention|Furry conventions]] such as [[Anthrocon]], [[Further Confusion]], and [[Midwest FurFest]] often host in-person roleplay events, LARP (live action roleplay) sessions, and collaborative storytelling panels.

=== MUCKs and MUDs ===

[[MU*]] environments (MUCKs, MUDs, MUSHes) have a long history in the furry fandom as early homes for text-based roleplay. [[FurryMUCK]], founded in 1990, is one of the oldest running furry online communities and was among the first dedicated spaces for furry roleplay.

== Roleplay Etiquette ==

Furry roleplay communities generally follow shared etiquette standards:

* '''Godmodding''' — controlling another player's character without permission — is widely considered poor form
* '''Metagaming''' — using out-of-character knowledge within the story — is discouraged
* '''Fade to black''' — transitioning away from mature content rather than writing it explicitly — is standard in SFW spaces
* '''OOC vs IC''' — clearly distinguishing out-of-character (OOC) communication from in-character (IC) dialogue, often using brackets ((like this)) for OOC
* '''Consent''' — checking with RP partners before introducing dark themes, violence, or relationship storylines
* '''Post length matching''' — trying to match the detail level of your RP partner's posts

== Fursona and Character Creation ==

Most furry roleplayers participate as their [[fursona]] — a personal anthropomorphic animal character that represents them within the fandom. Others create separate RP-specific characters for different story settings.

Key elements of a roleplay character typically include:
* Species and physical appearance
* Personality traits and backstory
* Skills, abilities, or powers (in genre settings)
* Relationships and motivations

For a guide to creating a fursona for roleplay, see [https://chatfurry.com/how-to-make-a-fursona.html How to Make a Fursona].

== Furry Roleplay and LGBTQ+ Identity ==

The furry roleplay community has a significant [[LGBTQ+ furries|LGBTQ+]] presence. Many furries use roleplay as a safe space to explore gender identity, sexuality, and self-expression through their characters. Dedicated LGBTQ+ furry roleplay spaces exist on platforms such as [[ChatFurry]]'s [https://chatfurry.com/lgbtq-furry-chat.html LGBTQ+ Furry Chat Rooms].

== Safety in Furry Roleplay ==

Reputable furry roleplay platforms maintain safety standards including:
* SFW-only public rooms
* Age verification or separation for adult content
* Human moderation teams
* Reporting tools for harassment or inappropriate content
* Dedicated safe spaces for teen and younger furry roleplayers

Furry roleplay

2026-05-31T03:38:21Z

Cynx: Created page with ''''Furry roleplay''' (also written as '''furry RP''' or '''furry roleplaying''') is a form of collaborative, text-based or voice-based storytelling within the furry fandom...'

== Overview ==

== Common Genres ==

Furry roleplay spans a wide range of genres and settings:

* '''Fantasy''' — medieval kingdoms, magic systems, dragon riders, and mythical furry worlds
* '''Sci-fi''' — space exploration, starship crews, alien furry civilisations
* '''Slice-of-life''' — everyday furry life, college settings, found family stories
* '''Adventure''' — quests, exploration, action-driven narratives
* '''Horror''' — survival scenarios, mystery, psychological storytelling
* '''Romance''' — character relationship development (SFW)
* '''Multi-genre''' — hybrid settings combining elements from multiple genres

== Where Furry Roleplay Happens ==

=== Online Chat Platforms ===

See [https://chatfurry.com/furry-roleplay-chat Furry Roleplay Chat Rooms].

Other platforms where furry roleplay takes place include:
* [[Discord]] servers dedicated to furry RP
* [[Fur Affinity]] notes and journals
* [[FurryMUCK]] and other [[MU*]] environments
* Reddit communities such as r/FurryRP

=== Furry Conventions ===

[[Furry convention|Furry conventions]] such as [[Anthrocon]], [[Further Confusion]], and [[Midwest FurFest]] often host in-person roleplay events, LARP (live action roleplay) sessions, and collaborative storytelling panels.

=== MUCKs and MUDs ===

== Roleplay Etiquette ==

* Species and physical appearance
* Personality traits and backstory
* Skills, abilities, or powers (in genre settings)
* Relationships and motivations

For a guide to creating a fursona for roleplay, see [https://chatfurry.com/how-to-make-a-fursona How to Make a Fursona].

== Furry Roleplay and LGBTQ+ Identity ==

The furry roleplay community has a significant [[LGBTQ+ furries|LGBTQ+]] presence. Many furries use roleplay as a safe space to explore gender identity, sexuality, and self-expression through their characters. Dedicated LGBTQ+ furry roleplay spaces exist on platforms such as [[ChatFurry]]'s [https://chatfurry.com/lgbtq-furry-chat LGBTQ+ Furry Chat Rooms].

== Safety in Furry Roleplay ==

Reputable furry roleplay platforms maintain safety standards including:
* SFW-only public rooms
* Age verification or separation for adult content
* Human moderation teams
* Reporting tools for harassment or inappropriate content
* Dedicated safe spaces for teen and younger furry roleplayers
