The IQ Challenge was a LiveJournal meme created by Triggur which took the form of an IQ style test in which the player has to answer a number of maths, anagram and logic questions before given their score in a fun image to place on their LiveJournal. What players did not know however, was that the entire test was fake and used the testee's IP address combined with the URL they were told to paste on to the LJ to pull a prank on the poster.

The test's true purpose was shortly discovered by its users, and the quiz was pulled from its own site and replaced with a short essay. This personal piece stated that IQ tests only hinder people (high scores subconsciously promote arrogance while low scores promote inferiority) and that what you do matters more than how smart you are.

How it worked
The test questions were sourced from genuine 'IQ Test' sources, which gave the hoax a veneer of plausibility. There was no sly tip-off included, as in many other hoaxes and pranks - for all intents and purposes, the test appeared absolutely genuine.

The test results however, were never recorded. When the person who took the test viewed their image, their IP address was identified by the IQ Challenge server and they were shown a high scoring image (from 135 to 165, determined by a random function when starting the test). To anyone else who viewed the same image from a different IP address, it would display a very low score (70 to 92, no correlation to the high score). The result was that many people posted to their LiveJournals, showing off their score and appeared to be cheering for a very low achievement.

The Bunny
The Character displayed on the results images was designed and drawn by Cuprohastes on request. The character has been referred to as:
* DunceBunny
* Prof. Bunnikins
* The IQ Bunny
* The Testbunny
* Quizbunny
* "That freaky eyed psycho".
The official name is, and always has been, "The Dumb Bunny" since the other designs under considerations were Smart Ass for the high scores, or "Prof. Floating Robot Egg-Head".
After the hoax was admitted, good quality images were made available by Cuprohastes, which led to the creation of a set of icons by LiveJournal user Screwball 420.
The bunny originally had dark blue eyes (International Klein Blue) but after negative comments, they were subsequently altered to a lighter colour.
Originally the bunny was supposed to be female, but was drawn to be more androgynous to appeal to a broader range of users.

West Corner Of the Park (or WCOTP) is a comic based around the denizens of FurryMUCK, although it often comments on issues of interest to the wider furry community. It is drawn on a weekly basis by Jim Groat, and coloured (since June 2008) by Crowley.

*Address: http://www.graphxpress.com/cgi-bin/wcotp.cgi
*Ran from/to: 1 July 1997 - present

The name of the strip is derived from FurryMUCK - the real West Corner of The Park is the centre of the FurryMUCK universe, being the place where new characters emerge from (under the bandstand), and is generally the focal point of much of the MUCK's activity.

Newcomers and critics have accused WCotP of simply not being funny. While it is true that many of the jokes require knowledge of the characters or locations that is not presented in the comic, the strip's fans counter with the statement that the gags and characters were always intended to be in-jokes meant to cater especially to the MUCK community (and that, as Jim Groat produces the strip for free, he has no obligation to meet the standards of an outside audience).fact

The strip occasionally airs the author's political views. It frequently depicts obituaries of both favored and disfavored persons, with favored ones such as Bob Hope and Ray Charles being escorted to heaven, while Yasser Arafat and Saddam Hussein are taken to hell.fact

The many running gags at WCotP include:

* Bunnies (particularly the Easter bunny) and their edibility
* Gin's love of guns, and other explosive substances
* The yiffiness of vixens, and the foxes (typically, new players) that desire them - and get smashed for it
* Flinthoof's addiction to Altoids (a type of mint), which frequently lead him to places where man (of any species) was not meant to go - see also Red Shetland

The strip usually takes a break the week during and sometimes before a convention attended by Groat, followed by the previous weekend's public art jam before new strips resume. The deaths of prominent artists and entertainers are also noted in strips.

If the strip is late being posted, Cuprohastes usually blames Space Weasels as the cause on the WCOTP Livejournal community. The WCOTP community is no longer being updated.

As of May 2007, the comic (along with the rest of GraphXPress) is reportedly banned in Qatar.

Cuprohastes quit colouring WCOTP after the March 16, 2008 strip, though he continued to colour the WCOTP cover up to "Book 10" for which he still has not been paid.

The comic ran in black and white for several weeks until colouring was taken over by Crowley who was asked to continue colouring in the style used by Cuprohastes.

There's a new furry fanzine making the rounds. You probably won't see it on the shelves of your local comic book store, though, or in any public library, since its prime attraction is pornographic cub art and stories.

Softpaw Magazine #1 was published in November of last year, joining the catalog of furry dealer Rabbit Valley this February.
The magazine's retail price is $20—distinctly higher than smaller, black and white furry comics which usually sell for less than $5. Conversely, Softpaw's format is 8.5" x 11" with between 64-80 pages in full colour.

Softpaw editors Jery and Kiffin maintain that the magazine — mailed in unmarked plain envelopes for privacy — is entirely legal:

The pair seeks to raise US$12,000 through pre-orders and donations to cover costs associated with the next issue, ideally before Anthrocon 2007 where they will be participating as dealers. As of May 27 they had $9,291, helped in part by a $5 discount on pre-orders and a pizza party at Further Confusion 2007 and Califur 3.

While laws in various countries differ, US law specifically permits works which are "distinguishable" from images of an actual minor. However, many in the fandom feel that such depictions are morally wrong, or at best, place the fandom in bad light. Some groups, such as the now defunct Burned Furs or (active ) Improved Anthropomorphics group, have tried to decrease the impact of such interests in the fandom through a variety of methods, often controversial in themselves.fact

So far, Softpaw has gained relatively little attention outside its target market. The increasing popularity of cub art has raised concerns, though, both inside and out of the furry community. All-ratings New Zealand art archive Cub Central was featured on Portal of Evil in March 2001. More recently, Fur Affinity's community was split over the question of erotic cub art. Site administrators eventually decided that as no actual child was hurt by the depiction, and they allowed images of other illegal acts, they had no grounds to exclude it.

Cuprohastes: /* Cupro's Collorary */

Cuprohastes

Cupro's Maxim states that:

All Furs are broken, to a greater or lesser extent

An Explanation
Simply put, all furries are one way or another, not normal. At the "light" end of the scale, they wish to indulge in some fantasy escapism and social conversation - people who have wonderful, fulfilling lives, do not need to escape from them. Given that a vanishingly tiny proportion of people are actually happy, then this end of the scale can be assumed to be populated by people who are very nearly normal, apart from a desire to role play a dragon with a tea fixation, nudist cervitaur or Jewish Aardvark.

At the other end of the scale are those with severe emotional, mental or social problems, who are looking for a place to belong, where they can socialise, and themselves feel normal. They may be described as "Very Broken".

It's worth remembering that if you consider someone is "broken" that you should also consider the ways in which you yourself are "broken", and as the sage says: "Cut them some slack".

The Meaning of Broken
Broken in this case refers to the definition in "The Jargon File" - a repository of "Geek Jargon", and is not a derogatory term, but a technical assessment:

* Not working according to design (of programs). This is the mainstream sense.
* Improperly designed, This sense carries a more or less disparaging implication that the designer should have known better, while sense 1 doesn't necessarily assign blame. Which of senses 1 or 2 is intended is conveyed by context and nonverbal cues.
* Behaving strangely; especially (when used of people) exhibiting extreme depression.

Un-Broken state
The concept of there being a "Broken" and "Un Broken" state is purely arbitrary, and the nominal "un-Broken" state is probably fictitious and unnatainable. Cupro's Maxim is not a particularly serious philosophical point, and is more a reminder to treat peoplewith a little care...

Cupro's Collorary
All Furs are Broken...
... This includes you.

In fact, pretty much everyone is broken. The question is, can a broken person detect broken-ness in others? The answer is: Yes.
However I'd suggest that people can't usually reliably detect their own broken-ness.
Like a lot of generalizations about furries, I find myself doubting that it actually has anything to do with furry at all. "All people are broken, to a greater or lesser extent" rings just as true. --Sebkha 13:54, 29 Aug 2005 (UTC)

* I have given thought to this topic, and I find that the statement "All Furs are broken, to a greater or lesser extent" is somewhat true. I personally would modify the statement to "The furry fandom attracts broken individuals" for two reasons:
*# to emphasize the proper causality (the fandom does not do the breaking), and
*# that some furs are so minimally broken as to be practically functional.
* I say this after years of casual observation of the fandom; and despite neither knowing nor having met anyone in person, I have personal experience with being broken. ;) ---bersl2

:The trouble with that is that it implies that there is a "non-broken", ideal state. I would take the view that I am not broken, just different, as everyone else is in one way or another. In particular, I do not want to be "fixed". People tried that for homosexuals, with the best of intentions, but looking back it doesn't seem like that was such a good idea. :-) --GreenReaper 07:26, 14 Oct 2005 (UTC)

:: Um, yeah... the idea basically being bandied about there is that so-called "non-broken" people are the ones with "wonderful, fufilling lives", and the entire business sounds like a terribly arbitrary value judgement on just what a wonderful, fufilling life is. And what 'escapism' is. What if involving role-playing is part of a wonderful, fufilling life? Who defines what a wonderful life is? Or is not? Generally, observations like these always end up making a sweeping value judgement that cannot really be supported rationally when one takes them apart, and betray some kind of cultural bias.

:: For example, some psychological perspecitves posit that "escapism" is perfectly normal and a release valve for ordinary stress. Everybody "escapes" to some degree, in some time frame - it's impossible NOT to. Who then, is broken or not broken because they feel the need for some "escapism"? Eh? -- ToyDragon
West Corner Of the Park (or WCOTP) is a comic based around the denizens of FurryMUCK, although it often comments on issues of interest to the wider furry community. It is drawn on a weekly basis by Jim Groat, and coloured (since July 2003) by Cuprohastes.
*Address: http://www.graphxpress.com/cgi-bin/wcotp.cgi
*Ran from/to: 1 July 1997 - current

The name of the strip is derived from FurryMUCK - the real West Corner of The Park is the centre of the FurryMUCK universe, being the place where new characters emerge from (under the bandstand), and is generally the focal point of much of the MUCK's activity.

Newcomers and critics have accused WCotP of simply not being funny. While it is true that many of the jokes require knowledge of the characters or locations that is not presented in the comic, the strip's fans counter with the statement that the gags and characters were always intended to be in-jokes meant to cater especially to the MUCK community (and that, as Jim Groat produces the strip for free, he has no obligation to meet the standards of an outside audience).

The many running gags at WCotP include:

* Bunnies (particularly the Easter bunny) and their edibility

Jonesy Tawner is a fictional character. She is a 4.5' anthropomorphic hermaphrodite bunny of the dwarf bunny kind. Originally a spin-off chracter of DrJones/Doc Jones, she quickly became an entire character of her own.

Appearance and personality
Her appearance is very much like Doc Jones in term of fur colour, being a deep blue. The color of her eyes is blue as well, while her skin and nose are pink. She has long hair, often styled into a braid. She also wears gold-framed glasses as she is nearsighted (see Factory Failsafes below) . As mentioned, Jonesy is a hermaphrodite and has both sexes. While Jonesy is generously endowed by her in-story-creators, she is by no means a Wingerized fursonna, though this varies on occasion and is used mostly for fun (see Abilities and weaknesses below).

Jonesy has a passive yet easygoing personality; she prefers to listen and watch and hang out in company of friends. She likes to be kind to others as she likes kindness in response and is hard to offend. She found that people she doesn't know are often worried about approaching her for the first time in fear that she will reject them. Such is not the case because she loves making friends and cares for those who are truly sincere. Sometimes if she has a bit too much energy, she tends to become rather bouncy and active!

Story
Jonesy was created by Halcyon Corporation who specializes in genetic engineering for war. They have been largely successful as suppliers of military units of all sorts, and have decided to try out in the entertainment area as well. Their first project was this very sex toy bunny. After numerous test iterations, the first successfully created version was Number 15, later known as Jonesy. Previous models either did not shape properly or suffered various failures, for example Number 14 died soon after creation due to a neural failure. Jonesy has once been referred to as being an fully biological android.

The original design was that of a petite all-black bunny with both sexes, meant to obey every command without a will of its own, cheap to manufacture and easy to replace. Due to mysterious benefactors, Jonesy gained self-awareness as she slept before the day that she was to be handed over to Halcyon Corp's CEO. As this awareness occurred, she made her escape more by luck than wits, even if her mental capacity was increased to genius levels. The change also turned her fur entirely blue while keeping her skin colour unchanged. She later found out that a mysterious symbiote has bonded with her on a molecular level, effectively fusing with her into one being. She believes that Number 15 only exists as her training of a sex toy and body, while her personality belongs to that of the symbiote.

After her escape, Jonesy sought out a safe place with the Tawner Family who took her in on their moving private space station Safehold. There she matured and grew under the loving, caring tutelage of Nikotaka 'Niko' Tawner and the nightfox's friends such as Faeon, Malaika and others. The family grew as they moved from Safehold to the land of FM where they were joined by Tazel Sixpaws, Doral, Pikacha and several others.

During this and later time, Jonesy became an accomplished scientist and doctor, skilled in many of the fields that both professions encompass, her main interests have become Artificial Intelligence and Genetics.

Only recently she has found out about and met others in her line of work such as Dr. Foxy Trinity, Dr. Veronica Skerry and Dr. Holly Wednesday.

Abilities and weaknesses
Jonesy possesses no special abilities of her own aside from her smarts that she gained during her change and the knowledge she put into her head over the years. Her body, while petite in build, possesses the natural width and strength of the lower body that rabbits are known for. She can run very quickly but does not posess more physical strenght than any humanoid of her size. She does however posess superior stamina as part of her morning jogging routines as well as other activities.

Her interest in genetics has given her the ability reprogram her DNA, with the unique nature of her body due to the symbiote, she is able to experience similar shape shifting abilities as DrJones, however these are not done at will but by ingesting a special programming fluid that she often carries around with her. The shapes, in similar fashion to DrJones, last longer if they're of equal size and mass as herself. She's been known to change herself into a 10 foot tall multi-limbed version of herself she dubbed the Alpha Bunny, a skunk, mink and mouse shape to name a few.

During her time on FurryMUCK she had numerous meetings with various demonic creatures such as Chessia, Oni, Charm and MiaFillene. It was during one of her meetings with Charm when the arctic vixen's seed supercharged Jonesy's body, giving her an at-will ability to become a half-demon. In this shape, Jonesy is a head taller than usual, has black fur and skin and has the characteristic 'horns' that a demon has, if small in size. In this shape, her male and female attributes are very exaggerated and over productive.

"Factory Failsafes"
This demonic ability has become less and less used after Jonesy discovered documentation of herself, finding out her body had a limited lifespan of 5 years. She tried to find various was of fixing this limitation, without much success. Luck as it would be, during Chessia and Oni's wedding, at the after party, she was splashed by Charm's seed once again. This dose was much more intensive as the vixen was in an excited state and it again supercharged Jonesy's body to the point she could live off the energy, surpassing her 5 year lifespan. Since then, Jonesy must be "recharged" every decade.

Another problem Jonesy had to overcome early in her first year of life, was another of the failsafes built into her body to avoid her survival without Halcyon Corp. The worst of them next to the limited life span was the D gene. Short for Degeneration, it is a special gene designed to make her break down. The symptoms were neural pathways shutting down over time, rendering Jonesy less and less intelligent and more feral while other parts of her body started to fail such as heart, lungs, hearing, sight, etc. Jonesy was saved in time, with help of Niko. All of the damage caused was slowly restored by Jonesy's symbiote, unfortunately, her eyesight never returned to normal and she was forced to wear glasses.

Where is she?
Jonesy can be found mainly on FurryMUCK, Tapestries muck and recently Second Life. On the first two she is known as DrJones and on SL her name is Jonesy Teazle. Feel free to say hello!

In addition, Jonesy has her own website, Bloobunni.com.

At the time of the writing of this article, Jonesy's body is 6 and a half years old while psychologically her age is 26 and a half.
Dragon

Dragons are as wide and diverse a mythological species as one could ask for; rich in lore, appearance, form, color and nature. Though not all dragons have scales or are even entirely reptilian, they are generally classified as scalie or herp within the furry fandom. With such diversity and adaptability to anthropomorphic characterization, the dragon has become one of the more popular choices as a fantasy avatar.

<div style="clear:both;" />

Non-anthro dragons
Full-form, non-anthro dragons come in many shapes and sizes representing their origins from around the world.

* Western Dragons are usually large, leathery-winged, quasi-reptilian or saurian beings. In modern fiction they are sometimes warm-blooded, and reflect influences from contemporary knowledge of dinosaurs. Most have scales and some lay eggs. Variations include but are not limited to:
** Feathered wings
** Fur coat or manes
** Un-scaled hides
* Eastern Dragons are generally long, sinuous, fur-bearing dragons without wings. Often, they have horns or antlers, and are the type depicted in Chinese or Japanese traditional art.
* Rare or Atypical Dragons such as Amphipteres or Wyverns - the moniker "Dragon" is applied to a staggeringly large number of creatures, some of which have very little to do with each other.
* Non-traditional or less common permutations, such as Fairy Dragons or even artificial and symbolic creatures - postmodern fantasy and science-fiction has portrayed the dragon as everything from a psychological meme to steampunk robots.

Character-oriented genres like Furry tend to portray non-anthro dragons with additional capabilities and tweaks to make them more accessible as a sentient character who might display human-like behavior. The capacity for human speech is common. It is also not uncommon to see dragons with dexterous, tool-using forefeet. One can find crossovers with dragon-like qualities in species concepts like the monoceros.

Anthro-Dragons / Dragonoids / Draconoids / Draconids
Similar to their full-form cousins, but humanoid or bipedal. Furry fantasy characterizations of this style of dragon may freely combine highly interpretive elements:
* They may or may not have wings. Wings may not be functional for flying, or may be only for gliding.
* Feminine forms (be they female, herm, or otherwise) frequently show mammalian traits such as breasts. Such a character might still be defined as a reptile, or might be conceived more as a mammal with draconic features.
* Legs are often digitigrade, but may be plantigrade.
* Body hair and/or fur is common. It sometimes may be presented as birdlike proto-plumage or down.

In fiction, myth and character back stories, non-humanoid and humanoid dragons are sometimes two aspects or variations of the same species. It is not uncommon for non-anthro dragons to possess the ability of shapeshifting in order to assume a humanoid form. Or they could be presented as examples of parallel evolution...
<div style="clear:both;" />

Known furry examples of anthro-dragons include Brian Harp's Dz'isu, AraKaraath from his comic In A Perfect World and Phantomgraph's Dracine.

Draconic Character Traits
Dragons typically have many character traits ascribed to them. Due to the wide range of mythology and differing perceptions of their personality, there is no definitive guide to draconic characterization. Some classical and popular traits are:

* Hoarding valuable items. Traditionally seen as greed, but sometimes as protection of rarities or items which are valuable in more ways than material riches.
* In Asian mythology, an appreciation for fine foods and tea, culture, traditions, and rituals. As a side note, many Furries who play dragons also seem to have a preference for tea, regardless of their character's mythological background.
* Arrogance, selfishness and a sense of superiority and/or invulnerability.
* Vanity and great attention to appearances, though not necessarily physical.
* Defensive and territorial, preferring the company of other creatures to another dragon.
* A "breath weapon" of some kind, often visualized as the natural or mystical ability to exhale fire. There are many variations, ranging from icy breath to poisonous clouds. It has been suggested that this originates from the Christian idea that dragons (as "serpents" or "wyrms/worms") embody the tempting serpent of Hell, and thus their bellies are gates linked to Hell; whenever the dragon opens this gate, then, hellfire will belch out. However, such portrayal can also be considered a derogatory stereotype.
* Deference and even voluntary servitude to great wisdom, purity, power, or beauty.
* Curiosity about smaller, more delicate creatures such as men, to the point of obsession.
* Great cycles of sleep and regeneration, where a dragon might vanish for weeks, months, or years to slumber or hibernate.
* In the oriental context, a dragon is often seen as a messenger of divine powers or enforcer of the law of the gods.
* Mastery of arcane knowledge, such as alchemy and forms of sorcery or magical lore.

One trait many also conceptualize dragons with is referred to as the "pounce or ponder" instinct. A dragon tends to either make a snap decision - or else spend hours, days, or even years laboring over an idea, with little middle ground between the extremes.

Dragons Today
Dragons have occasionally taken on a more humanistic sensibility in modern fiction. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern saga is thought to be the beginning of the modern reconceptualization of the dragon. Particularly within comic books, anime, manga and furry fandom, the dragon as a character or a personal avatar is often employed to add some draconic qualities onto a more human oriented foundation. Dragon characters commonly take on a more benign, playful, and warm persona.
<div style="clear:both;" />

* Non-anthropomorphic dragons are frequently direct allies of heroes and villains, and often serve as their protectors, companions or partners.
* In A Perfect World, the comic strip by AraKaraath, shows dragons as notorious for harassing postal carriers. Common traits include a love of shiny objects, the ability to "lounge" almost anywhere, and a tendency to take a very long view of things.
* Dragon characters are often crafted for appealing or exciting appearances as much as traditional mythological qualities, and combined with present day or science fiction settings in addition to traditional fantasy. Here, the dragon's traditional qualities are interpreted in a new context - for example, dragons might be masters of high technology rather than magic, or intellectuals rather than wizards.
* Dragons which have metaphysical elements may employ more modern ideas such as psionic abilities.
* The dragon might embody many traditional aspects, but for new purposes, such as humor. A good example of a traditional yet humorous and contemporary dragon is Llewellyn, from D.C. Simpson's comic strip Ozy and Millie.

<div style="clear:both;" />

Multiplayer worlds
Dragon species have been prominent in a number of multiplayer worlds, including Alfandria, Dragon's Shadow MUCK, Loneport MUSH, and Ryksyll MOO.

How it worked
When the person who took the test viewed their image, their IP address was identified by the IQ Challenge server and they were shown a high scoring image. To anyone else who viewed the same image from a different IP address, it would display a very low score. The result was that many people posted to their LiveJournals, showing off their score and appeared to be cheering for a very low achievement.

The Bunny
The Character displayed on the results images was designed and drawn by Cuprohastes on request. The character has been refered to as:
* DunceBunny
* Prof. Bunnikins
* The IQ Bunny
* The Testbunny
* Quizbunny
* "That freaky eyed psycho".
The official name is, and always has been, "The Dumb Bunny" since the other designs under considerations were Smart Ass for the high scores, or "Prof. Floating Robot Egg-Head".
After the hoax was admitted, good quality images were made available by Cuprohastes, which lead to the creation of an set of icons by Screwball 420(LJ).
The bunny originally had dark blue eyes (International Klein Blue) but after negative comments, they were subsequently altered to a lighter colour.
Originally the bunny was supposed to be female, but was drawn to be more androgynous to appeal to a braoder range of users.
The IQ Challenge was a LiveJournal Meme created by Triggur which took the form of an IQ style test in which the player has to answer a number of maths, anagram and logic questions before given their score in a fun image to place on their LiveJournal. What players did not know however, was that the entire test was fake and used both cookie technology combined with the URL they were told to paste on to the LJ to pull a prank on the poster.

How it worked
When the person who took the test viewed their image, their cookie was found by the IQ Challenge server they were shown a high scoring image. To anyone else who viewed the same image (and didn't have the cookie), it would display a very low score. The result was that many people posted to their LiveJournal's, showing off their score and appeared to be cheering for a very low achievement.

The Bunny
The Character displayed on the results images was designed and drawn by Cuprohastes on request. The character has been refered to as:
the official name is, and always has been, "The Dumb Bunny" since the other designs under considerations were Smart Ass for the high scores, or "Prof.
WikiFur:Vote on the new Community Portal name

Cuprohastes: /* Submissions */

WikiFur is soon to have its Community Portal redesigned to provide more functionality, communication and organisation for projects within the wiki. As such, the Community Portal is going to be given a new name.

What is that name? Well, we don't know yet and we'd like to have suggestions!

Criteria for the new name
The name should be something furry related and it can also be a little humorous too if you want. The WikiFur: namespace remember doesn't have to be official like the main article namespace. It can also run on a little theme if you want as we are also going to have a forum and discussion area within the Portal (akin to Wikipedia's Village pump), you can suggest a name for that area too if you wish to accompany your suggestion.

If you want some examples, WikiNews has "The Watercooler"; Memory Alpha, the Star Trek wiki, has "Ten Forward"; the Homestar Runner wiki has "The Stick".

Process for picking a new name
The process for picking a new name will be as follows:
#Enter your personal suggestion below, sign your edit to show who you are, these will be checked against the edit history of this page.
#Once enough submissions are in, a vote will be held for the favourite name.
#The favourite name will be selected and development on the new Portal will begin.
We are aiming to have the new portal up in time for the 2000th article so get your entries in now!

Submissions
To make your submission, place a semi-colon followed by your name idea. Then a colon followed by a sentence explaining your name maybe or why you choose it, along with signing your name. Please don't voice support for another person's idea yet! That will come when we vote for our favourites!

;Example Name
:Small sentence explaining why I think the example name is great, possibly my idea for a Village Pump name too. -Nidonocu - talk 12:08, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)

;Community Central
:Use 'Community Central' to keep that sense of familiarity with users from other wikis (which is a plus), but use 'central' to make it distinct that the central page is not a portal into dozens of other pages with very restricted information (WikiFur isn't <i>that</i> big yet...). For the Village Pump, I suggest that we call it 'The Park.' I mean, how many furryMUCKs make a park of some sort the central area? FurryMUCK's West Corner Of The Park, SPR's Knuth Park... Almafeta 12:17, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
:A bit species-specific, but it's still cute, eh? Rather explicitly furry and easily identifiable, too. Benjamin 23:42, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)

:A nice, neutral name that seems to fit the mood of the community center. --TheListener 03:13, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

;The Howling Grounds

Crush! Yiff! Destroy! (or CYD for short) is a website with an associated forum visited by furs, ex-furs, non-furs, and outright anti-furries which has as its ostensible guiding principle the uninhibited poking of fun at the excesses of the furry fandom. Favourite topics include the political antics of the webmasters of popular furry sites, bad stories and fanfiction, online drama and overreaction, furry spirituality and unsightly fursuits.

While the founding concept of CYD is the exercise of freedom of speech among like-minded individuals who share a sense of exasperation at the fandom's more bizarre features, it has also become unjustly associated with individuals of a more militant and childish attitude who occasionally commit acts of vandalism against furry online resources, even though the forum's management explicitly deprecates such behaviour and has stated its willingness to ban those responsible if they can be identified. It mostly reads like a collection of retards all giggling over how stupid other people are.

CYD has been described as being an offshoot of Portal of Evil or Something Awful, but it has no ties or affiliations with either of these sites, and indeed is often dubbed a "furry site" by them. It is likely that this idea arose because a few of CYD's forum members are also members of those other sites.

The CYD forums are an interesting mix, including both practicing furries and vehement antifurries living in an uneasy balance. The occasional "LOL FURRIES" style too-stupid-for-Something Awful furry basher pops up now and then and is usually quickly banned. Furry apologists venturing into the forums are generally judged on the basis of their behavior in the forums alone rather than the their posts elsewhere on the internet. Although generally hostile to "celebrity" furs, a number of minor furry artists and fans have won acceptance there. The forums are moderated by Mitch, Computolio, The New Meat and Dogthing.

CYD also provides an extensive collection of documents valuable to those researching early fandom history. Some of these aren't available elsewhere. Also included is an extensive collection of links to other Furry web sites, the majority of which are favorable to the fandom.

Gearworld is a recurring theme in the work or Ursula Vernon. It is typified by eroded ocncrete, iron, gears, and the melding of different items - Steam pipe tree, for instance, or fish that live in glass tubes bolted to the walls.
The Gear world is vast and changeable - the normal rules of the world do not apply consistently, or in some cases at all. Gearworl is inhabited by a range of peoples, some fantastic, others, more mundane, all of whom are to some extent unexplained thus far.
As its name suggests, the theme of the tavern is that it is set in the same world as <i>The Wizard of Oz</i>.

The tavern features multiple rooms. Although it is flagged as adults-only, 'adult' scenes of various types are not allowed in the public rooms, similar to The Flagon's Tale. It is a place for socialisation and general conversation without the confines of having to be "PG13".
The Tavern also features a number of scripts coded in MPI, including a maitre'de, a fireplace, a bowl of barnuts, and a rising and setting 'sun.'
It also contains many exits, some of which are not listed, and some of which are merely not obvious. It is still under expansion, though the main areas are complete.
The Emerald City Tavern may be considered "moderated" as the owners are often in residence, though tend to take a "hands off" approach to management.
There are high hopes that this new site will bring all the freedom of expression and ease of use that made its predecessor so immensely popular, but without any of the problems that plagued it.
Arcturus maintains a LiveJournal under the guise of n (not to be confused with nitrogen).
Who IS Arcturus?
Verix's Story
Note: This story was a satirical response to the rumors and insults surrounding Arcturus from those who rallied against him for his actions in the split between FurAffinity and ArtFu. It is not intended to be taken as literal fact.<!-- Another note: While I realize this warning probably isn't necessary, you never know... -->

You know in being Arcturus's butt-buddy I've come to learn a few things about him. Oh man he's going to hate me for dispelling this stuff but dude, you have no idea, and I believe the community deserves to know!

Now as you all know, Arcturus is a dragon. He was well utilized in World War I for being a scare-tactic against the French, but was later discharged from the war, as the general realized it's too easy to scare the French. Arcturus was then hired by the American army to literally take a bite out of Germany-- unfortunately, he missed and bit the Automan Empire instead. What people don't tell you is that Arcturus is the actual reason that the Automan Empire fell, not any other crap, like that stuff about Franz Ferdinand or whatever you think you know about history!

In World War II, Arcturus was hired by the German armies to once again scare the French. However, they decided to keep him on board to make him appear more like one of the "horriffic scientific experiments" that they had been doing. They dressed Arcturus up in half-metal to make him look like a prototype for the jagdpanzer projects, then sent him to France to scare the shit out of people in weird hats eating horrible cheese. But when Einstein managed to make a machine that created a time-rift and therein assassinated Hitler, Arcturus was once again removed from duty of being a scary son-of-a-bitch.

The very first time Arcturus ever exploited anyone for money was actually directly after World War II-- he exploited the whole event! Trying to create the very first computer game and equally very first historical game, Arcturus went to work on Command and Conquer: Red Alert. He found Einstein to play himself and other actors to play out other roles. This project soon tanked, however, as Westwood Studios saw this and raped the fuck out of him. Then they stole the code.

Arcturus is now the head of security for Eurofurence, but only in the sense that he refuses to move from the castle that he's in right now. He is hiding from his war-time activities and equally his ability to exploit massive wars from the masses. This is to protect his identity, as even now, neo-Nazis are seeking him out as the last resort of worship to the leader they lost to science in the last great war.

So now you know all the dirty secrets about Arcturus. I hope you enjoy!

The 411
Arcturus lives in the town of Plymouth, in the United Kingdom (The country noted for it's tea drinking, bowler hat wearing and excessive apathy, and superiority to The United States of Wah. He shares a house with another dragon, called Crimson, a furry artist (who is a raptor) called SpiritRaptor, a peculiar gryphon called Jon, and an excessively slutty fox, called Pete DarkFox.

His arch-nemesis seem to be a UKFur called KurtBatz, who seems to think he wanted to steal the UKFur.net forums from him. Suule from FurAffinity, among many others from that community, who hate him for his actions against FurAffinity and Jheryn.

He is also known to pretend to be a female online, in the guise of a blue and white, yellow-spotted dragoness. He also holds a large fascination with the overly large bosoms of Arshes Nei.

Brian Root, or as he is known to the internet, rootdown, is a self publicist and wannabe Internet Celebrity. He lives and attends university in Monterey, California, pursuing a degree in 3d animation. His screen name is taken from a track of the same name by the popular hip-hop group, the Beastie Boys. He enjoys some modest notoriety among the furry community for his penchant for baiting, sarcasm, and pranking.

1997-1999: The Black T-Shirt Years
Brian Root was introduced to the internet and to the furry community simultaneously while a teenager in 1997 by his then-friend and neighbor, Keith Aksland, an avid reader and fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Soon thereafter, Root started mucking on FurToonia under the screen name Fauxx, and contributing to what was then known as the Squeaky Clean Furry Archive (or as it came to later be known, Yerf). Like every privledged young white furry with aspirations of being really edgy and oppressed someday, he wore a trenchcoat, grew his hair long, played Werewolf:_the_Apocalypse, and listened to Nine Inch Nails a lot.

Within about 18 months of his introduction to the furry community, Root began to associate with individuals who were very critical of the scene - the Burned Furs - and found that their opinions had an appeal for him. Perhaps because of his chosen peers, or perhaps because of his rebellious teenage mentality and existing penchant for stirring controversy, he came totally unglued and started posting lengthy, incomprehensible rants to alt.fan.furry about how everything and everyone in the furry community was stupid. Please don't google them. They're embarassing.

1999-2001: Monastic Absence
Suddenly, in the summer of 1999, Root disappeared. For two years he walked the earth as a monk, learning the secret North Star kung-fu, totally invisible to the internet while pursuing religious obligations in England. It was after his return from that country that he started using the screen name rootdown, a moniker given to him by other missionaries who could punch people so hard that they exploded and their blood and entrails would spell out the word "Ouch!" on nearby walls.

2001-2003: The Portal of Evil
rootdown is frequently, and to his great irritation, mistaken for a Something Awful goon. In reality, root is not and never has been a member of the Something Awful forums, nor has he ever been a fan of that website. This confusion probably stems from the fact that for a number of years, root was a participant in the Portal of Evil forums and chat room. It was here that he learned how to most effectively argue with people on the internet, and also that he didn't actually enjoy arguing with people on the internet very much.

In the summer of 2003, root attended the second Portal of Evil convention (POEcon), and that same month stopped posting regularly to their forums. Despite no longer being an active member of their community, he remains friends with the many other Internet Celebrities and forum alumni that he met through that site, including but not limited to 665 creator JSP, PoE cofounder K. Thor Jensen, and SexSexWorld field operative Hooper X.

Rumor has it that Divefox punched rootdown in the face at Anthrocon 2002. It was a traumatic experience for root, one that still gives him horrifying flashbacks to this very day. If you had been punched at a convention you've never attended, you'd understand.

2003-Present: Chat on the Internet
After returning from England, rootdown began mucking again. On one of his primary hangouts he met and soon became close friends with his frequent collaborator and co-conspirator Stiv, and together they started the muck Unknown Epicentres (or UEI). It was also during this time that rootdown created the now-defunct Voltron Boards, a messageboard that for whatever reason was primarily used for linking to and discussing bad art. During this time, rootdown and Stiv would frequently "invade" other mucks and recruit the most obnoxious and intelligent people they could find to join UEI.

(An interesting historical note: Because many of the members of UEI were brought together through shared frustrations with what they felt was the creative stagnation predominant in the furry scene, they liked to refer to their muck as the "rival school" to Postvixen's Puzzlebox muck -- another muck created out of the same motivations as UEI, though taking off in a completely opposite direction. It was the UEI crowd that gave Puzzlebox it's three-letter acronym designation as PBX. Postvixen has on more than one occasion called rootdown the "bizzarro Postvixen.")

After a few years, rootdown became bored with UEI and stopped paying the server fees. The muck switched hosts, but many of the core members stopped visiting. One of the problems root saw in mucking was that many of his friends, which by this point were from all over the internet, not just the muck-friendly furry scene, found the interface to be obtuse and counterintuitive, and so just wouldn't connect. In an effort to bring more of his friends together who shared interests and attitudes, he created the legendary AIM chat room, Chat on the Internet.

COTI was an instant success. Within days, you could find people in COTI day or night, telling dick jokes. Because anybody with an AIM client can participate and be invited, and everybody and their mom has an AIM screen name, COTI became a persistent and growing fixture. The tradition of raiding and recruiting creative assholes that started in UEI lived on in COTI, and it is of significant note many of the administrators and moderators of the messageboard Eat All Furries were assimilated by the horrifying COTI hivemind.

The EAF mods then went on to make Stiv the only active moderator of their forum, and for the last three months of EAF's lifespan he would entertain himself by banning everyone who posted. On September 11th, 2004, the forum was shut down for good and replaced with an MSpaint image of a wolf flying into the World Trade Center.

Art and Art Philosophy
Ever the contrarian, rootdown has constantly asserted that he does not believe in developing a single distinctive and recognizable art style, as is a popular practice among furry artists, but that it is more important instead to have a wide range of working modes. To this end he is constantly experimenting and exploring different techniques, combining traditional media in pencil, sumi-e, and watercolor with digital work in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and Alias Maya. He has yet to "find a voice," or an approach to creating artwork that he is really comfortable with.

rootdown names as his influences Tony DiTerlizzi, David Choe, Jordan Crane, Norman Rockwell, Nick Bantock, Julia Margaret Cameron, Nancy Stahl, Dave McKean, and Frank Frazetta.

Curiously, his artwork done as Astolpho deliberately ignores his never-draw-the-same-way-twice philosophy, instead maintaining an internally cohesive and self-consciously formulaic approach throughout. Whether or not this pattern continues now that the secret identities are no longer secret remains to be seen.

Holy crap, rootdown is Astolpho??
In an apocalyptic revelation in the summer of 2005, rootdown came out before God and the internet a babyfur - and not just any babyfur, but Astolpho, an illustrator rapidly gaining popularity in the babyfur community. Astonishingly, nobody among his carefully edited and highly elite circle of internet friends flinched - they all knew he was kind of funny in the head already and so it really came as no huge surprise that he was bent in that way. Conversely, while his asshole friends took the fact that root was a closet babyfur in stride, a handful of his babyfur fans were horrified to discover that their hero, the patient and loveable Astolpho, was in reality a closet asshole.

2010-2013: Postnuclear Roadwarrior
spoiler

Together with his plucky band of punk-rock rebels, rootdown ekes out an existence in defiance of the megacorporation that threatens to enslave the last free enclaves of humanity. He enforces his own sassy brand of lawless justice and wears gigantic spiked shoulderpads. No power in heaven or on earth can stop him or the army of giant robots he is building in his secret base deep under the surface of the earth.
** Feathered wings
** Fur coat or manes
** Un-scaled hides
* 'Eastern Dragons are generally long, sinuous, fur-bearing dragons without wings.
* Non Traditional such as Fairy Dragons.

Character-oriented genres like Furry tend to portray non-anthro dragons with the capacity for human speech. It is also not uncommon to see dragons with tool-using forepaws other tweaks to make them more accessible as a sentient character who might display more human-like behavior. One can find crossovers with dragon-like qualities in species concepts like the monoceros.

Anthro-Dragons / Dragonoids / Daconoids / Draconids
Similar to their full-form cousins, but humanoid or bipedal. Furry fantasy characterizations of this style of dragon may freely combine highly interpretive elements:
* They may or may not have wings. Wings may not be functional for flying, or may be only for gliding.
* Feminine forms (be they female, herm, or otherwise) frequently show mammalian traits such as breasts. Such a character might still be defined as a reptile, or might be concieved more as a mammal with draconic features.
* Legs are often digitigrade, but may be plantigrade.
*Body hair and/or fur is common. It sometimes may be presented as birdlike proto-plumage or down.

In fiction, myth and character back stories, non-humanoid and humanoid dragons may be two aspects of the same race on slightly different paths or stages of evolution. It is not uncommon for such non-anthro dragons to possess the ability of shapeshifting to assume a humanoid form. They may also be presented examples of parallel evolution.

Draconic Character Traits
Dragons typically many character traits ascribed to them.

* Arrogance and a sense of superiority and/or invunerability.
* Vanity and great attention to appearances, though not necessarily physical.
* Defensive and territorial, preferring the company of other creatures to another dragon.
* A "breath weapon" of some kind, often visualized as the natural or mystical ability to exhale fire. But there are many variations, ranging from icey breath to poisonous clouds.
* Deference and even voluntary servitude to great wisdom, purity, power, or beauty.
* Curiosity about smaller, more delicate creatures such as men, to the point of obsession.
* Great cycles of sleep and regeneration, where a dragon might vanishes for weeks, months, or years to slumber or hibernate.
* In the oriental context, a dragon is often seen as a messenger of divine powers or enforcer of the law of the gods.
* Mastery of arcane knowledge, such as alchemy and forms of sorcery or magical lore.

One trait many conceptualize dragons with is referred to as the "pounce or ponder" instinct. A dragon tends to either make a snap decision - or else spend hours, days, or even years laboring over an idea, with little middle ground between the extremes.

Dragons have also taken on a more humanistic sensibility in modern fiction. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern saga is thought to be the beginning of the modern reconceptualization of the dragon. Particularly within comic books, anime and manga, and Furry fandom, the dragon as a character or a personal avatar is often employed to add some draconic qualities onto a more human oriented foundation. Dragon characters commonly take on a more benign, playful, and warm persona.

* Non-anthropomorphic dragons are frequently direct allies of heroes and villains, and often serve as their protectors, companions, or partners. (See: Dragonriders of Pern)
* In A Perfect World, the comic strip by AraKaraath, shows dragons as notorious for harassing postal carriers. Common traits include a love of shiny objects, the ability to "lounge" almost anywhere, and a tendancy to take a very long view of things.

Furry culture suffers from as much stereotyping as any other group. This is mainly based on character species and genders.

As with many stereotypes, Furry Stereotypes can have some truth to them but are also generally over generalisations.

The Furry Stereotype
The stereotype of the Furry is a hairy, overweight male, sat in stained underwear in his mother's basement, surfing for furry porn.

While this undoubtedly happens, it's also not true. Sometimes Furs don't wear underwear while surfing for porn...
... And some of them don't surf for porn, wear nice clothes and have their own homes, and families, and go to church.

Unfortunately, the image of a Furry being normal and sociable is not as tittilating to the general public, or groups such as Something Awful (Who are a bunch of fat pimply teenagers who masturbate over posts by Lowtax, and surf for free porn galleries. Of course.)
This has lead to the less desireable version being spread.
No matter how many mostly normal Furs there are, all it takes is for one person to fit the stereotype for non furries to feel that the case has been proven.

Common assumptions
* Furs are gay
* Furs are overweight
* Furs are zoophiles
* Furs are plushophiles
* Furs are socially inept
* Furs are usually ugly

Stereotypes within the fandom
Within the furry fandom itself, there are many stereotypes, usually involving the species of characters:

* Foxes (Male) : Gay, oversexed, not very bright.
* Foxes (Female) : Played by male players, oversexed, no very bright.
* Equines : Size queens, oversexed, not very bright.
* Dragons : Arrogant, oversexed, not very bright.
* Rabbits : Really oversexed, not very bright.
* Wolves : They're just big foxes.

Astute readers may have noticed a pattern.
