LIFurs OMGWTFBBQ!, or OMGWTFBBQ!/OMGWTFBBQ, is an annual BBQ meetup hosted by the Long Island Furs.

Overview
OMGWTFBBQ has become the largest and longest-running furry gathering in Long Island, New York, USA.

The BBQ traditionally takes place throughout a two-day weekend at a picnic area of one of the New York State parks on Long Island. It is a free event (except for the park's Vehicle Use Fee) filled with food, fursuiting, games, and visits to the beach and boardwalk. Attendees are urged to join the Telegram group (accessible through the Carrd) for more information, event schedule, and to estimate attendance for logistics.

While the park is closed from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, local furry community sometimes organizes smaller off-site events such as room parties, house parties, or outdoors camping.

For a while at certain conventions, Jim made a tradition of destroying plush toy versions of Smurfs or of Barney the dinosaur, a practice that became known as a Groatish Mauling.

He was a guest of honor at ConFurence 1, Albany Anthrocon 1998, and Rocket City FurMeet 2004.

Mission and content
WikiFur's stated mission is to "record information of use to the furry community", in an attempt to distribute it to others. This mission has been widely interpreted, and WikiFur contains articles on art, literature and other forms of culture both created by and of interest to members of the furry fandom, as well as the people and characters within it, their history and interests, the worlds they inhabit, news on events of current interest, and much more besides. It can also offer a good introduction to the fandom, although Wikipedia's article is considered by WikiFur's founder to remain the best single page on the topic.

Motives for contributors vary. There are those who simply enjoy collecting and organizing information on anthropomorphic topics. Many are fans of particular topics and wish to help write "the definitive article" on it. Some see WikiFur as a means of "getting the truth out" about contentious subjects like the babyfur community, while others value it as a source of information which, while not completely without bias, is at least subject to an element of peer review and modification.

Audience and impact
As of March 2012, WikiFur attracted around 7500 visitors and 21,000 page views per day in English, and around 1500 visitors and 4000 page views in other languages. Around 3000 edits were made per month (~2000 in English), with 50-60 contributors making five or more edits, and four to eight contributors making 100 or more edits. Roughly seven articles are created a day, excluding those which are swiftly deleted.

WikiFur has been referenced by others within and without the fandom, including Animal Passions, an article on Anthrocon 2006 published in the Pittsburgh City Paper and pieces in T Magazine, L Magazine and 20 Minuten. Some fans have mentioned WikiFur as the source of information leading them to attend a furry convention.

WikiFur is linked to by several popular sites, including PeterCat's Furry Infopages, TV Tropes, Inkbunny, Furry News Network, Encyclopædia Dramatica, Rabbit Valley, Lake Area Furry Friends and the websites of Califur and Rocky Mountain Fur Con. The site has an international reputation, with links from Dutchfurs.com, FranceFurs, Furbase.de and Wolves' Paradise, and partner agreements with TurriWiki and WikiLurv.

Organization
WikiFur consists of a loose federation of wiki communities bound together by a common purpose. Each is run as a meritocracy granting greater power — and responsibility — to those who display ability and devote time to the project. Most decisions are dealt with by forming a consensus among small groups of interested editors, while larger issues are debated by the entire body. For example, when searching for a new host, WikiFur editors with relevant expertise submitted proposals that were discussed and voted on by most long-term users.

Significant authority rests with the founder, GreenReaper, who owns the WikiFur mark and wikifur.com domain name, handles donations, and manages the hosting provided by Timduru. He acts as the public face of the English project — and, by extension, WikiFur as a whole. However, editorial authority is vested in the entire body of colleagues, and his involvement in non-English projects is normally limited to technical, custodial and advisory matters.

Wiki projects not using the WikiFur marks or wikifur.com, but which share a common theme and principles (most notably, freely licensed textual content and the neutral point of view) are treated as sister sites, and added to the WikiFur interlanguage links and the international portal.

Promotional activities and advertising
WikiFur has engaged in various methods of promotion and advertising, the latter being paid for by site supporters. Promotion usually focusses on two goals: increasing readership, and attracting new editors. Emphasis is often made of WikiFur's size, both in terms of articles and audience, and of the importance of its mission. Methods of promotion have included conbadge-like business cards, flyers, ribbons, and posts and comments on news sites, forum and LiveJournals, along with paid conbook advertising and Google AdWords coverage.

Media coverage
Three weeks after its foundation, WikiFur was selected as Something Awful's Awful Link of the Day. Massive vandalism ensued, but the boost in traffic allowed rapid growth.

There's a beliefcn that WikiFur could provide trolls and other people with information that would be used to disparage the image of the furry fandom within mainstream society, by altering or exposing verbatim furry data and facts that could confuse people or disgust people, further enhancing the perceived stereotypes of the fandom.

There is also concern that WikiFur may be co-opted by such above mentioned people to push their own point of view in the name of neutrality, as highlighted when an Encyclopedia Dramatica user edited the same articles on both WikiFur and on ED at the same time.

Privacy versus information
Roughly half of the articles on WikiFur are articles about people. Contributors are encouraged to make articles about themselves, other members of the fandom and/or about people who create material of interest to furries, whether or not they consider themselves members of the fandom.cn But there is a continuing conflict between the goals of both respecting the privacy of individuals and fully documenting the history of the fandom.

While the underlying goal of WikiFur regarding privacy is to do no harm to past or present users with articles in the wiki, this has led to the removal of some factual information from articles (normally by request), which always risks the charge that WikiFur is either failing to preserve furry historycn or that there are unstated motives for allowing for the removal of such information.cn Trying not to fall in either of those perceived camps has not been easy, and has led to heated discussion and criticism from both sides of the issue - History preservation conscious individuals accusing Wikifur of compromising its mission or "playing favorites,"cn or pro-privacy members calling the site a "stalker's heaven"cn

WikiFur may remove real names from an article that is not specifically about the person when the name is not relevant. For example, the name of the commissioner who bought a painting for $10,000 at auction was omitted because the issue was the price of the painting.

But some requests for private data removal are occasionally refused, specially if historical contextcn or possible continuing repercussion to the fandomcn is present or possible (for the latter see Mitch Beiro, Mozdoc, TORA, Evil Sibe, Frank Gembeck, Ted Sheppard, Alan T. Panda, Mizzyam, Formic Hivemind, Wolfie Stonespirit, Brown Leopard, Keba, Lightpaws, etc), and making legal threats to WikiFur has not been effective in having information removed.

This privacy exception also carries over to the full personal exclusion of some user articles under the same guidelines. Furthermore, some notable and extremely notable people (famous or infamous) requesting exclusion are subject to a much stringent review for such by the site's community, and even if exclusion is granted, some of their personal (not private) furry centric information is normally moved out to relevant pages, before exclusion is applied.

Although Europe is evolving a legal right to be forgotten, WikiFur is not compelled by law to remove any private information. Articles about comics and other public works are not removed even if the author requests it, as they are not "personal information" but "public works".

Bias
As with other Wikis, there is an ever-present danger of bias on WikiFur. The most expected bias would be the simple fact that most contributors and editors are members of the furry fandom, and may be expected to likely have a "positive only" opinion of it. This can lead to accusations that certain articles are biased towards the fandom's positioncn or as a tool against its critics.

Claims that an article is biased (in either direction) are typically resolved by removal of unsourced information, by providing references, or by giving attribution to any statements that are opinions. The decision on what information to include in an article, and in what proportion, may itself put the topic in a false light. The usual remedy is to suggest that the person complaining about it fix it by adding the appropriate relevant information or reference material.

Untruths
As opposed to personal information and opinion, WikiFur actively removes contributions that appear to be untrue. However, an acceptable standard for inclusion is that the contributor believes the information to be true. Actual facts are sometimes harder to determine, and WikiFur has made mistakes.cn

Despite this, WikiFur is cited as a relatively reliable source on contentious topics that it covers, and it has been praised for its attempts to provide useful information while avoiding bias.

Vandalism
Like many furry forums and sites which allow comments, WikiFur has its share of vandals. However, since it is a simple matter to return to a previous state, most vandalism is reverted within minutes. The members of 4chan's /b/ board took particular interest in the site, and regularly organized raids until August 2006.fact

Despite multiple attempts, no vandalism since Something Awful from any source has succeeded in disrupting WikiFur for more than a few hoursfact - the worst case was a sophisticated account-registering bot that used the Tor proxy system, which has since been blocked.

Timeline
History of WikiFur
WikiFur was conceived in July 2005 by British software developer Laurence "GreenReaper" Parry while creating an article for The Blind Pig on the English-language Wikipedia. Founded July 24, 2005 on the Wikicities (later Wikia) wiki hosting service, WikiFur was initially promoted on Wikipedia's furry fandom article talk page, followed by posts on LiveJournal and alt.fan.furry. By August 28, the wiki held over 1000 articles; the count reached 10,000 in 2008.

WikiFur also made inroads into non-English content, beginning in 2006 with an affiliation with the autonomously-administered Finnish-language Turriwiki; this was furthered with the launch of three Wikia-based language-specific WikiFur projects in 2007. New languages were launched on the wikifur.com domain from mid-2008, hosted on a server provided by Timduru, and the other languages joined them over Summer 2009. Her first appearance in a full-length animation was in 1993, in a short called A Walk in the Park.. Other animations include three At the Movies shorts. When the Sabrina Online comic was created, Eric toned down her sexuality and made her Sabrina's roommate. She was later married to Thomas Woolfe, a character created by Michael Higgs. She and Thomas have a child, named Timmy.

* Sabrina, also called Sabrina the Skunk, is the main character in Eric's Sabrina Online webcomic. A nerdy skunk, and Amiga enthusiast, she becomes the head web designer for the Double Z Studios, and works under Zig Zag. She is also the older sister of Tabitha. She became girlfriend and later wife to R.C. Raccoon after meeting on an IRC network and the two later have a child, named Danielle in the sequel Baby Steps. Sabrina is featured in two of his animations, the first being Plight of the Artist, and the second being Remote Possibilities. Sabrina can be seen in the background of At the Movies 3.

* Clarisse Cat is yet another of Eric's many characters. In fact, along with Amy the Squirrel, she is one of his originals. She has short blonde hair, mostly orange fur with peach secondary fur, face-to-tummy and slipper-pattern feet, and wears a cerise pink T-shirt (matching her nose).

* Tammy Vixen is the younger sister of Sheila Vixen, another of Eric's characters. Tammy's boyfriend was based on Eric's pet dog, Tor. When Tor passed away in 1998, Eric stopped drawing Tammy in response. (One of the pictures Eric did to commemorate his pet has Tammy at Tor's grave.)

* Flip the Frog: He has relations with Clarrise in many of Eric's old Amiga animations.

* Zig Zag: Although not his creation, Eric is very fond of Canadian furry artist Max Black Rabbit's character Zig Zag, a skunk/tiger hybrid and professional porn actress. She and her creator appear on Eric's webcomic, Sabrina Online.

Art
Eric's art has been published in multiple publications (beginning with Sabrina at See-CAD), and he also produces his portfolios. He has also produced several furry animations of varying lengths.

Controversy
Eric is believed by some to be the same as the erotic toon artist TDK,cn and at one point during the turn of the 21st century, the struggle to prove the truth or otherwise of this assertion was, for a while, an extensive back-and-forth online fight, involving furries versus (mostly) anti-furries (critics) of that period.

Babs is also a fursuiter and a puppeteer. She is the player of Bunny Bloom (a character from the mind of Eric Schwartz), Money Penny, Lili Fox, and Cheeto. She loves to perform in fursuit parades as well as at furry conventions/fursuiting functions.

Her puppets have made appearances on the Funday Pawpet Show and on [[Rapid T. == Lili Fox ==

Lili Fox is a character created by Babs Bunny in 2004. She is an arctic fox, all white except for pale blue markings on her front paws, toes, tail tip, and eartips. She has a pink tuft of hair, adorned with a snow lily flower. In addition to the flower, Lili wears a purple tie with a yellow peace sign on it.

The creation of the character Lili was inspired by a plane trip home from Further Confusion, which took a route over Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

According to Babs:

That 'heads up' came along in May 2004, when Babs doodled up an arctic fox. After working with the design a little, Babs fell in love with the design. She says:

In October 2004, Arend Studios created the Lili fursuit, where she debuted at Midwest Furfest that same year.

The New Year's Furry Ball, or NYFB, is an annual event hosted by The Furst State and other local furries in the Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey region of the USA, from December 31 - January 1 each New Year.

History
2005 and 2006 ("Room Con" in Berlin, NJ)
Chrono Otter Coon (Chrono) hosted a New Year's party for two years which was playfully dubbed Room Con at his private home in Berlin, New Jersey. The party was followed with a visit to a local restaurant or bowling alley on New Year's Day. There were 23 attendees for the 2005 New Year and 38 attendees in 2006. For the 2006 New Year, Room Con badges were distributed to partygoers.

Chrono intended to officially move the event to a hotel the following year, but later announced that he was leaving the area. Tigra began making plans for a replacement New Year's party, before allowing LupineFox to take over.

Based on a suggestion by Cyril Jackal that some objected to and a compromise suggestion by SomaCat the replacement event was officially named the New Year's Furry Ball.

2007 to 2010 (Quakertown, PA)
The event was hosted for 3 consecutive years by LupineFox with assistance from SomaCat, SkippyFox, Tigra, LittleWolf, Kung Fu Dave and other locals at the Quakertown Comfort Inn.

For the first two years the event took place entirely within two suites in the hotel, and not in a hotel's actual meeting space. The third year expanded to six independently run themed room parties throughout the hotel. Attendees received badges made to resemble government passports, and each official party had a unique stamp for attendees to collect on their passports.

For the 2010 New Year, the fourth and final year in Quakertown, the event was organized by Protocollie. There were four con suites next door to each other: registration/raffle, video game room, open bar/dance suite (21+ to enter), pizza/lounge room and one additional open room party serving dinner.

2011 to present (Newark, DE)
Now organized by Protocollie, Kitt3ns and members of Furst State, the event was moved to the Embassy Suites Newark-Wilmington/South in Newark, Delaware, and utilized actual hotel meeting space instead of individual suites. For the 2011 New Year the event featured music from DJ Protocollie, a Rock Band game area, a buffet-style catered dinner, cash bar and a raffle.

Furstivus was held instead of the New Year's Furry Ball for the 2012 New Year. NYFB 2013 returned to the "doomsday proof" Embassy Suites on December 31, 2012 - January 1, 2013.

Attendees are urged to join the Telegram group for more information and to estimate attendance for logistics.

While the park is closed from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, local furry community sometimes organizes smaller off-site events such as room parties, house parties, or outdoors camping.

FDCMuck (short for Future Disney Cabinet Muck) was a small MUCK created in November 1994. It started as a joke when a reader of the rec.arts.disney newsgroup added the title "Future CEO of the Walt Disney Company" to his .sig. Other readers joined in the fun, announcing their future positions within the Disney company. Eventually over 300 people were listed as members of the "future cabinet".

FDCMuck started as an online community for members of the "cabinet" to spend time together and role-play away from other readers of rec.arts.disney who weren't interested in such. The muck had fewer than 100 players when it first opened, and at its peak had over 600 characters.

FDCMuck was a private community; membership was by application only. It required every character name to be associated with Disney, and it was one of the few mucks which enforce strict G-rating, it tolerated no sexual invitations, IC or OOC, towards any players. Another distinguishing feature was that all wizards were elected by popular vote once a year.

The system running FDCMuck was hacked in the year 2000 which resulted in a long unplanned downtime and address change which caused a drastic drop in population and activity. Wizard elections were suspended. A reunion meet was attempted in June 2003, which gathered 39 players, but it did not bring back the muck.

The BBQ traditionally takes place throughout a two-day weekend at the picnic area of Sunken Meadow State Park, centrally located on the north shore of Long Island. It is a free event (except for the park's Vehicle Use Fee) filled with food, fursuiting, games, and visits to the beach and boardwalk. Attendees are urged to join the Telegram group for more information and to estimate attendance for logistics.

While the park is closed from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, local furry community sometimes organizes smaller off-site events such as room parties, house parties, or outdoors camping.

Hi there, Cubbi, and welcome to WikiFur! Thanks for letting us know a bit about the two Cubbis - let me know if you need any help not already provided. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 07:36, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

There's a button next to your submit button. Says show preview. What that does is allows you to take a look at what you've already done. Saves your edit history from bloating and saves our recent change page from flooding up with you. Thankies!--Kendricks Redtail 23:18, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, Mwalimu, we were discussing wikifur with a couple of #tlk-l folks and it ended up with this new userbox: Template:User TLK. Want it? Want it edited? --Cubbi 17:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
:I'm not sure what you're asking; Wikifur is open for anyone to edit, so articles and templates don't belong to anyone. I'll add it to my User page, since I was at one time an active Lion King fan. Looking at the template, one thing I might change would be the category name to something shorter. --mwalimu 19:36, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

The edit was made in January 6, 2012. The change was a GF edit, as the summary indicates that the event was not held the year before. Your edit has now corrected the issue, thanks. =)

Hallo. The phrase "On some years, the time between park close on the Saturday and park open on the Sunday included nearby hotel room parties and other additional local events." is a little bit hard to read, what exactly does it mean?. Thanks in advance (and please give me a few minutes with the LIFurs OMGWTFBBQ article (making a few changes). cheers. - Spirou (talk) 18:10, 26 February 2024 (EST)
: sure, that can be reworded/dropped. Trying to make a point that most years it's not a contiguous 2-day event, except where ppl self-organize fun things to do overnight, off-site. --Cubbi (talk) 18:25, 26 February 2024 (EST)
::Forgot to ask about the Hotel's name, too, sry. - Spirou (talk) 18:30, 26 February 2024 (EST)
:::Just gave the article a major edit on a first pass (the term OMGWTFBBQ made the "History section" a little word-heavy, so I lightened up). Need to drop some pro art freelance jobs right now (on a tight deadline), but I will finish later if you wish (minor eits here and there), also, does the event have an official logo?, danke in advance. - Spirou (talk) 18:40, 26 February 2024 (EST)
:::: I'll look up which hotels were used for official overnights, it's been a few years and one of them was since demolished. The logo we print on badges was donated by a local artist very early on and is treated as "the bbq logo", but nothing really makes it official other than use. --Cubbi (talk) 19:06, 26 February 2024 (EST)

Vandalism Accusations
This is a response to Cubbi's accusations of vandalism. The edit was a good faith summarization of "18 years of history". Along with this, there are no citations in the article, including the future date, which is speculatory. It's very hard to be neutral on an article one has significant involvement in, especially running an event since 2009. I don't believe it's appropriate for one who runs an event to significantly contribute to an article, and reverting edits from an outsider as a result only adds to this conflict of interest.
: Your personal conflict of interest w.r.t this event makes it hard to assume good faith, not to mention content removal while name-dropping Wikipedia policies (and no, the ones mentioned above do not apply) fits the common fandom wiki vandalism pattern. --Cubbi (talk) 17:07, 26 February 2024 (EST)
:: A third revert was made after I specifically asked to "go to the discussion page for futher [sic] dicussion of the article". This makes it hard for me to believe the edits were being done in good faith. I'm unsure what my personal conflict of interest is in this article, the content wasn't removed but summarized. The policies named are Wikifur's policies, including the citation policy. Lumin City (talk) 17:18, 26 February 2024 (EST)

The Long Island Furs are a social group based on Long Island, New York. The group was founded in summer 2006.

History
The group was initially started as weekly diner runs by the Umgotts Studios crew, including The Kemeeleon, Mitsu, Amadeus, Lunamor, and their friends, Joe Meyer, Thilus, and the Fur Keep crew (Gushi, Michelle Latta, and others). Other than that, the only furry activity on the island were occasional Eric Kern's furmeets and the annual furry track at I-CON until Nekonaru Letao initiated the Long Island Furs LiveJournal Community, officially organizing the group and having their first meetup at Nekonaru's OMGWTFBBQ in August of 2006 which continues to this day.

In addition to the BBQ, the group also frequently has bowling meets, public suiting, game nights and house parties. Earlier, meets were coordinated over li-furs.org (by Cubbi) but has migrated to the Telegram group.

LIFurs OMGWTFBBQ

Cubbi: "over" is fair, because we ran out of badges at 102, reg confirmed 6 more, but we know there were more late comers than that.

The LIFurs OMGWTFBBQ is an annual BBQ meetup hosted by the Long Island Furs, which has become the largest and longest-running furry gathering in Long Island, New York.

The BBQ traditionally takes place over the course of a two day weekend at the picnic area of Sunken Meadow State Park, centrally located on the north shore of Long Island. It is a free event (except for the park's Vehicle Use Fee) filled with food, fursuiting, games, and visits to the beach and boardwalk. Attendees are urged to join the Telegram group for more information and to estimate attendance for logistics.

On some years, the time between park close on the Saturday and park open on the Sunday included nearby hotel room parties and other additional local events.

It is a free event (although you do have to pay a parking fee) filled with food, fursuiting, games, and visits to the beach and boardwalk. Attendees are urged to join the Telegram group for more information and to estimate attendance for logestics.

On some years, the time between park close on the Saturday and park open on the Sunday included nearby hotel room parties and other additional local events.
