Caudron's book is an often personal insight into the world of the fanatically (be it with the material or the intangible) obsessed. Shari Caudron set out to find out the reason why certain people were endowed with a seamlessly never-ending amount of passion to fuel on that particular personal pursuit, belief or hobby. One of the many "subcultures" covered in this book is [[Furry fandom]] itself.

This book relates her long, cross-county quest to find what was the missing piece that [[Wikipedia:Trekkies|Trekkies]], doll collectors, [[Wikipedia:Star_wars|Star Wars]] fans, and other fanatics had that kept their passion alive, in a way to discover why hers never stayed lit. It also sets the record straight on many of these Americana subcultures.

An excerpt from this book has received the [[Christine White Creative Nonfiction Award]] for excellence in literary journalism from [[Wikipedia:Goucher College|Goucher College]], home of the country's premiere creative nonfiction [[Wikipedia:MFA|MFA]] program. == "Misfit Furries" chapter ==

The author's interaction with the furry fandom occurs in Chapter 10, "Misfit Furries", in which she attends [[Califur]] in Costa Mesa, California. The chapter functions as something of a catharsis for the author, as at the convention she finds herself able to break through her perceived inability to immerse herself in the various subcultures she visits. (The chapter is the last experiential one of the book's second section, which is titled "Immerse".)

* pp. 181-183: The author gives an overview of what furries are, described here as "...people who share a love for the anthropomorphic representation of animals". The video is situated around a [[Wikipedia:Swinging|swingers]]' [[house party]]. Couples of male and female creatures of the same [[species]] arrive. The party gets off to a good start, although it is made clear that the male moose has had a little too much to drink.

Everyone has a lot of fun dancing. The hostess then comes around with a bowl of keys and the females get to pick one, pairing up with members of different species. The rabbit girl selects the moose, leaving her rabbit partner astonished.

The evening wears on. The male rabbit finds himself unable to settle down with his swinging partner, and goes looking for his own girl. He is unable to find her, though he does run across another pair in the process of [[Wikipedia:Foreplay|heavy petting]]. Ultimately, he steps outside, only to find a nearby car rocking suspiciously.

Opening the door, he drags out the moose, who puts up a fight until the rabbit pulls out a gun. The rabbit shoots, and the party members rush outside to find the two swingers dead, with the male rabbit standing by, then turning away. A raccoon tries to convince him to put the gun down, but he is too late, and is sprayed with stuffing from the rabbit's head as he commits suicide.

Yerf was founded in 1996 by [[Rat (person)|Rat]] as the ''Squeeky Clean Furry Archive'', and hosted on his site, Rat.org. At that time it was little more than an [[Wikipedia:File Transfer Protocol|FTP]] server, although it developed later.

At one point, a large proportion of the art uploaded to the SCFA was strongly influenced by ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog]]''. Eventually, people got sick of so much derivative artwork, and Sonic-based material was banned, to the complaints of some of those who had been uploading it.

By 1998, Rat wanted the site to have its own domain (previously it was at rat.org/yerf). Rat chose Yerf because, being a generic term, the name could stay the same no matter what direction the site took. At that time it was generally accepted to mean "a noise [[fox]]es made", and yerf.com was not taken, so Rat registered it.

The name change to Yerf and the re-branding occurred in 1998. When Rat moved to California, he was no longer able to keep his server up, and so it moved to [[Tugrik]]'s purrsia.com server in late September 1998.

On 10 July 1998, Rat handed over front end administration of the site<ref>[http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.lifestyle.furry/browse_frm/thread/60e8064c8c378d26big changes coming to yerf.com]. July 10, 1998 post by Rat to [[alt.lifestyle.furry]].</ref> to [[Scotty Arsenault]] - it had previously been run in part by [[Jedd Marten]]. In late 2001 Scotty handed administration and the server over to [[Dingofox|Dingo]].

Over time, the quality standards got stricter, and artists who were previously members were [[Wikipedia:Grandfather clause|grandfathered]] in, which became a regular cause of complaint for those who either felt that artwork by the grandfathered artists was inadequate, or (more often) people who had been rejected who looked to this art as an excuse to complain about double standards. Another complaint was the speed of application processing, due in part to the time required to review and the limited pool of reviewers.

On 27 December 2004, Yerf's hard disk signaled a failure.<ref>http://www.livejournal.com/community/yerf/42523.html. Post to Yerf [[LiveJournal]] community.</ref> Initial hopes for a quick fix were soon dashed<ref>http://community.livejournal.com/yerf/2005/01/04/</ref>, and eventually it became clear that all of the data had been lost,<ref>http://www.livejournal.com/community/yerf/55386.html Post to Yerf [[LiveJournal]] community.</ref> although over $2500 was raised in donations. Worse, the hard disk contained the only copy of the Yerf archive software.

=== The restoration ===

On August 2005, Yerf was in the process of being rebuilt around a new core, the '''Squeeky Clean Art Archive'''. Members were allowed to post images on the community LiveJournal instead. The forums were also been re-opened. The intention re-post the artwork once the core was back up, as some users had saved copies of the site before the crash.

On 11 November 2005, most of the art from the original archive was reposted in a "read only" database, displaying first artist names, then thumbnail pages in each artist's directory of the art arranged chronologically, and then finally the image. Final page layouts and structure were to be determined while work continued on the new gallery software. A wiki page coordinating the process of restoring the few artists, images, and descriptions which were lost in the crash was put online at the same time.

On 24 November 2005 (American Thanksgiving) the new gallery software's code-base was placed online on a development resource site, and coders of all stripes were sought for further development. Design goals for the new site software were to preserve the clean page layouts and simple navigation of the original layout, avoiding the design excesses of other larger archive sites. One focus of interest was the creation of a strong, speedy peer review system to address previous criticisms of Yerf as being slow to respond to requests for new users.

On 20 January 2006, the site was declared officially open, if not complete. Old artists gained access to the site over the following week.

=== The second crash ===

In July 2006, Yerf went down again, came back up the same month, then back down again. No known hardware issues exist, with software suspected of being the culprit. [[Dingofox|Dingo]] is apparently trying to fix whatever problem may exist alone. People continued to wait in hope of even seeing Yerf up again, but the foundation that made Yerf so great in the past had started to crack, with several artists also demanding<ref>http://community.livejournal.com/yerf/159273.html</ref> that their accounts and galleries be taken down<ref>http://thornwolf.livejournal.com/715920.html</ref>, even if Yerf comes back up.

On October 16, 2006, Yerf became operational once again.

== Art policy ==

As indicated by the name, the SCFA was always distinguished by a strong [[PG]] focus. Around the time it was re-branded as Yerf, new policies were introduced concerning the ''quality'' of artwork. At first, a large proportion of artists might still have qualified to enter, but the bar has been raised over time to a point where even reasonably good artists might face several rejections before being allowed in, if they managed it at all. The long, usually six-month, mandatory wait period to reapply heightened this controversy considerably; some unsuccessful applicants believed this was sometimes applied as a form of punishment for failing to complete an application correctly.

This led to claims of elitism, which were (to an extent) ignored, as the majority of community members supported at least some level of quality filtering. Complaints about the speed of the review process were also frequent, due to the difficulty of getting qualified reviewers who could spare the time and effort to review submissions.

As of 2002, Tapestries became the largest and most populated [[MU*]] dedicated to the fandom, surpassing [[FurryMUCK]] with a peak of 870 simultaneously connected users; it now averages a maximum of 820 users a night.

== The world of the MUCK ==

Tapestries is based around a [[:Category:Culture|culture]] [[Wikipedia:Nexus|nexus]], where furry characters from different backgrounds may interact with each other (this definition includes certain [[humanoid]] beings like [[Wikipedia:Elves|elves]], [[Wikipedia:Ogres|ogres]], or [[Wikipedia:Centuars|centaurs]] -- humans are against the game's policies). Aside from the species restriction, themes are not strict. An unlimited variety of character origins are permitted by the game's administrators.

The game world itself is based around the town of [[Layleaux]], the center of most social interaction. Because of the overall adult theme, many of the MUCK's peripheral areas are themed around certain BDSM-based fetishes or interests.

Originally, Tapestries was a multi-world muck, of which the furry region was only one of many that could be reached through a tapestry room (hence the name). This room still exists, in the old Castle section of the MUCK (''t castle; s''), although the Furry Valley is no longer accessible through it.

Currently Tapestries has three active wizards: JadeWizard, GreyWizard and WhiteWizard who each handle different requirements of MUCK operation. FinFarenath's [[fursona]] is a white blueish, female [[dragon]] with long and soft Fur around the paws, belly, and mane. There also has been a former fursone, names DreamDancer, who is a blue anthropomorphic dragon and was known around the US-fandom since 1989. Depending on the mood either partly or in the full those characters do surface.

FinFarenath did a few drawings as well as sculpures in the past. Yet becasue of too much work and a major decrease in sparetime those activities have seized in the past years. He loves to use traditional media as well as computer colorization. Besides a lot od CG artwork in the 3d sector as well as in the digital drawing region he started out with the passion for pencildrawings.

Mitty, as he is called by some, graduated with a bachelors of fine arts degree from the Academy of Art college in San Francisco in 2000. Since then he has struggled to find jobs in the animation market and a niche in the furry community. Recently, Mitty had become the primary artist for the furry comic [[Carpe Diem]], but was later relieved of that position. He has also found a following in the [[macro fur]] community, after being encouraged by close friends (who happen to be in the macrofurry community themselves) to share his art with their macrofurry friends. (Urheberrecht vs. Namensrecht). Ask a lawyer. Your implications about names are not correct. And even if that were not the case, you'd have a hard time convincing a judge that you still have any legitimate interest in the name of a construct that you've abandoned 10 years ago, and which has since then been carried on by precisely those people who later chose to officially register it.

There is the concept of a generic term which cannot get protection, but in my opinion the name Eurofurence isn't a word commonly known by the public, so this certainly does not apply. There is no prior-art rule as in (US) patents for registered names, either. By founding the Eurofurence organization the name (unintentionally) got a certain degree of protection, which covers the goals of the organization. Yes, the organization can lose this right as well, if it does not use the name for a certain amount of time. And I'm sure the organization will do whatever it takes to protect these rights, as it has built up a lot of reputation among location providers such as the German Youth Hostel organization and of course within the European furry fandom. This involves a lot of responsibility, especially for a 5 digit amount of money, which is quite a burden for the organization. Letting others potentially ruin the reputation without defending the rights to the name probably puts the personal liability for the budget onto the shoulders of the board. In other words, the Eurofurence organization has no other choice than defending the name. And it will succeed keeping others from using it, I'm pretty sure.

Hmm... this a really huge tough one. I'm a clinger to the wiki ideal that no page should be protected. However, considering the content we cover I understand this is a problem that won't go away if we just say write about anyone. I suppose having the second proposal is a good idea, however the one editor must understand that administrators will retain the right to edit their words, first for the point of style (we need to set up style guides on writing biography or autobiography pages) and secondly for the point of ensuring correct article tone (eg, third person) and correct POV. Likewise, it might be worth asking if any particular administrator would like to become official locked articles representative or some title like that. Basically a SysOp that editors will accept as the trusted guardian over POV and so forth if they feel an article is not the full story. That SysOp then will raise the concerns in an anonymous manner (no identity of the editor in question is revealed) and a plan for the edit is reached.

Likewise there needs to be policy if contact fails. For example, a user could request this protection. Write a nice looking article and then disappear. A quibble of the article is raised and the SysOp queries it with the author. The e-mail bounces, the IM's are rejected or generally, the author no longer is able to be contacted, even after following through communication channels that are open to editors (Googling for alternative contacts etc). What is the policy then? Are people warned that if they no longer respond after a fair amount of time that their protection is hence forth receded and the article is unlocked? Following that if they suddenly appear again and complain, should they be penalised if they on purposely ignored the proposed edits and not be allowed to take soul control again?

:On its face, I think the personal-protected idea is a pallatable compromise, but it is virtually the same as article blanking since the user could just blank the article and disappear. Whether two templates are needed is a different discussion, but I still think treating people articles differently from other articles is a dubious double standard. Protecting pages is alright as long as the content is factual and informative. However, because they are locked the community can no longer to strive for either. Censoring pages of any useful information, or in the extreme case - blanking them, is devastating to the entire wiki resource. It reduces the overall value of the knowledge base and ''prevents users from sharing information that may be common knowledge in the fandom'' -- wasn't that the whole goal of the wiki? For instance, let's say [[Uncle Kage]] suddenly decided to blank his page. Plenty of information about him exists in the public domain, and now users leave the wiki to Google information that isn't secret, or are left confused and may assume he must not be a prominent person in the fandom. That's just a random example, but by removing useful information or locking it from community contributions, we reduce the value of the resource and may cause users to draw incorrect conclusions. I think all articles should be treated as public articles, and the revision cycle should set the community standard for what is included on a page. My two cents. I've said this in other places, but it belongs here too: the 'wiki ideal' is crap. Being editable at any time is only the means, not the ends. I would love to know more about [[LoupGarou]], based on his fantastic art; however, if he asks to be excluded, his rights to privacy trump our right to use WikiFur as a platform to say whatever we want about him.

Besides, look at it in this light. If we create pages about people or include things that they explictly asked to have excluded (such as real names or LiveJournal addresses, for example), that will make us look rude and inconsiderate, and will cast doubts both on our intentions here at WikiFur and on the factual accuracy of the rest of the site. It doesn't matter what justification we use for it, such as 'you can find it on Google' or 'it's publically available' or 'it goes against the wiki ideal'; it's just a bad idea. :Being editable by anyone at any time is a key pillar of communities like this. You can't remove that without making wikis no longer wikis. I think the problem has been that the people who are now excluded did feel vulnerable suddenly when a contributor posted what they thought was a personal detail and went on extreme defense. I belive in the Wiki-idle and GreenReapers plan is a good compromise. I think that with careful explaining of this new policy if we update them on the status, then they may be willing to have the non-personal information re-included on the wiki under the guarantee that their entry is guarded by admins to ensure no slurs or personal information is added. And I say "''guarded''" not "protected" as articles will continue to be updated when an update is passed to an administrator to handle, but I propose that the article's subject give us a 'Do Not Post' list with the details that they don't want shown (No LiveJournal link, no location, no real name, etc). I don't like this compromise. It allows people to take complete private control over their article pages, and does not allow for the ability to "fact Check." I do not think people should have the ability to completely control the contents of their article pages, because that ability/right can be abused. It needs a check. To that end, I think a proper check would be to require that all private self controlled article pages be with STRICT NPOV. By Wikipedia's definition. Two recent incidents (the entries on [[Something Awful]]-related behaviour at [[Anthrocon]] 2005 and the art auction at [[Further Confusion]] 2004) have shown that the issue of "personal information" and when to supress it involves more than the control of articles about individual people. There are some issues that I feel we should discuss, and this is probably the best place to discuss them.

#What, exactly, constitutes "personal information"? My list would be:

#*Location
#*E-mail address, telephone number, etc
#*Employer/Educational institution

#*Medical or social issues (sexuality, "romantic" attachments, popularity or otherwise within social groups, etc)
#When should this information be considered public?
#*This is the difficult one. Obviously, if the person him/herself has made the information available, it's public. Who else is "entitled" to do this?
#If someone requests that public, personal information is removed from an article other than one specifically about them, should their request be honoured? I don't think that the removal of _private_ personal information is an issue.

: Might I suggest a starting point would be to consider the common, "back of the jacket" author biographies seen in the publishing world? The particular nature of [[Furry]] fandom is such that a large number of the people involved in it are "content producers" in *some* way. Not just artists - writers, administrators/staff of boards, IRC networks, [[MUCK|Mucks]], or one could say, contributers in the community of role-playing that is a foundation of the fandom. Due to this, I wonder if the basic activities involved with all this might not make many people more "public" than say, the typical fantasy reader fan, but usually in ways most similar to content creators such as authors.

: Therefore, I consider public author biographies: such biographies that I have read typically list:

:*The author's name
:*The genres in which their work is known
:*Number of years the author has been working/published
:*Noteworthy awards or public honors
:*Websites related directly to the author's work or genre

: The general theme usually seems to be, to describe an author enough to give some sembalence of their gross public identity without really singling out personal details that could violate in-person privacy or reasonably be <I>used against the author</i> by say, your average psycho stalker. In a Furry translation, something such as the author's name could be replaced by common fandom nickname if applicable. Personal anecdotes could be left open to be volunteered by the person in question, or gleaned from only the most public statements by the individual, not hearsay, rumors, or what Phil said he saw in Dave's bedroom when he was looking for the bathroom that fateful Saturday night.

: Some authors and celebrities of course, volunteer a lot more information than that if they wish, feel comfortable, or are just plain narccisistic :) Following the principle of Wikifur not existing to harm anyone however, that would be something left up to the individual in question to come and offer themselves so that the responsibility for consequences would be in their hands. If somebody aside from the subject of the article posts information which goes beyond the most "safe" definiton of public information, the subject individual should have full rights to request that information removed or have their own edit of it be honored even if it removes some information. Yeah, there are tricky situations like the ever-popular (?) Sibe, but - there are cases were a person's outrageous behavior is made so public themselves.

: Even so, certain personal information should, perhaps, be avoided even if the person in question may have blabbed it at some point, five years ago, on one IRC channel. :Personally, I tend to follow the maxim - "Trust, but verify" . . . assume that people are those that they say they are, but do a quick check to see whether it seems reasonable as well. If they come in just as a username I might try to find a public email or other contact details for that person and confirm it via that. To my knowledge, it has not yet been a problem.

I really think this needs to be set, to differentiate between individuals like [[Sibe]] and private furizens who haven't harmed anyone. I think those who have done VerifiableBadThings(tm) shouldn't have any right to maintain anonymity of their RL information on wikifur. The question is .... what qualifies as a VerifiableBadThing(tm)? Should a violent or felonious criminal record be an automatic disqualifier against a right to maintain anonymity?

I don't expect it to be a popular notion. Most furs seem to want to remain ignorant that there are some very bad, rotten apples in the community (Sibe is very far from being the only one). A lot of furs seem to take the bury-head-in-sand, "we don't want to hear about it, let bygones be bygones" approach with a "forgive all abuses" because (in my opinion) they don't want to think our nifty cultural niche could have evil people. I have naysayed the Christian community, as an atheist, who hide, aid and abet others who call themselves Christian while abusing children, etc. I have come to realize its very hypocritical for me to say that if I don't take a stronger stand against those who claim the same labels I do, but are abusive individuals that are a threat and a menace to my Furry brothers and sisters. A violent criminal who abuses trust in furrydom shouldn't have the anonymity protection of someone who is innocent and just shy and quiet.

So to sum up: I think anyone with a violent public criminal history should automatically have no rights to hide/protect their RL identity, and I think there should be a standardized guide or ruleset to abide by. GreenReaper and the other wikifur staff/admins are a fine bunch of folks, so far as I can tell, but I think the theme of wiki is NPOV, and no one is "above" anyone else, and I think having a standardized set of guidelines for when someone's identity will and will not be protected in a wikifur article. Some websites or pages on websites are dedicated specifically to criticism of something or someone. Almost all of [[Encyclopedia Dramatica]] is a good example, but it's not the only one - certain posts on [[LiveJournal]], [[Crush! Yiff! Destroy!]] and [[Nothingkat.com]] come to mind. Often, this criticism reflects poorly on the group or person concerned, and they may seek to remove links to it where they can, including WikiFur.

The thing is, often these pages are actually telling part of the truth about a group or person that is not readily available elsewhere, even though it is not the whole truth and definitely part of a point of view. Often they feature copies of material because the author has removed the original evidence, and may therefore be the only source.

Should we allow links to such pages to be removed at the wish of the person concerned? Should this trigger the requirement of a notice to readers about the removal ("This page has been edited to remove links to content that the person doesn't like")? Should it not be allowed at all? Should we keep the links, but add a warning to them? Should we agree to remove the links on the condition that the information is put in the article itself in a NPOV form? Is this something we ''can'' make a reasonably firm rule out of?

: This is a tricky subject. On one hand, it's very true and important, I think, that external links might make available information for people to get the full story on certain issues; even if off-wiki information has a flavor of POV. On the other hand, so many sites have articles that are mostly attacks on people or false information, it could, in theory, present a problem and a way for individuals to be indirectly trolled or slandered using Wikifur as a referral portal. Perhaps any official decision on this should involve consideration as to whether the external source appears to contain information that that compliments the wiki article, or appears to be predominantly a personal attack, or distortion for the purpose mockery or deception. Maybe an example of an external link to be avoided would be a person making a personal rant to the effect "I hate John D Furry because he has funny teeth, grr! And I hate all furries with funny teeth!" versus a link that contains further information about say, how John D Furry is currently being sued for fraud in connection with a furry convention.

The location is the old [[Mephit Mini Con]] location near Darmstadt, and the spring edition will be near Fulda. Kalus was born on December 4th, 1970 at 12:30 am in [[Wikipedia:Orlando, Florida|Orlando, Florida]]. Son of Andrew Christopher Luft and Jessica Kim Luft (both died September 23, 1994 after being hit by a drunk driver), Kalus grew up for the first 3 years of his life in a small apartment complex in outlaying Orlando. His family moved to [[Wikipedia:Andrews Air Force Base|Andrews Air Force Base, North Carolina]] when he was four years old and his father transferred from the air national guard to full time service. for several years he grew up in North Carolina attending public school till the age of 14 when his father became a Brigadier General and was transfered to Ramstein airforce base in Germany.

==Military service==
Kalus lived in Germany for four years, applying for the [[Wikipedia:United States Military Academy|United States Military Academy]] at West Point after his eighteenth birthday. The first year he failed the physical part of the entry test. He waited until the next year, then reapplied, passed the test and was admitted to West Point. After graduating 53rd in his class he was assigned to the [[Wikipedia:U.S. 82nd Airborne Division|82nd Airborne Division]]. After two years he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and he transferred to the 101st Airborne Division, 506th Parachute Regiment.

When the the [[Wikipedia:Gulf War|Persian Gulf War]] broke out in 1991 Kalus was sent over to [[Wikipedia:Saudi Arabia|Saudi Arabia]] with his regiment. When the ground war broke out, Kalus's company was one of the few to see actual combat with the Iraqi forces. His regiment secured the outskirts of [[Wikipedia:Kuwait City|Kuwait City]] and forced the Iraqis into a retreat.

After he came home from the Persian Gulf, Kalus held two long-term relationships but neither worked out. He developed a drinking problem when his parents where killed even though they were killed by a drunk driver; he recovered a year later after being admitted to rehabilitation. His life was uneventful other then discovering the furry fandom in 2000 and graduating ranger school and being assigned to the 75th Ranger regiment, but it changed on September 11, 2001 when terrorist attacked America and the USA declared war on the [[Wikipedia:Taliban|Taliban]]. Kalus was a [[Wikipedia:United States Army Rangers|US Army Ranger]] that was sent in with the first FACs ([[Wikipedia:Forward air control|Forward Air Controllers]]) into [[Wikipedia:Afghanistan|Afghanistan]] in October. In July of 2002 Kalus was lightly wounded to the thigh after a sniper attack. Kalus was promoted to the rank of Captain in December.

After serving almost two tours in Afghanistan, Kalus' unit transferred to Iraq and prepared for the 2003 invasion. In 2005 he took part in the siege of [[Wikipedia:Fallujah|Fallujah]]. His unit was clearing the dense western suburbs of the city when it was ambushed. Several of the men in his unit were wounded, but the remaining eight men including himself fought off about fifty insurgent attackers before being able to retreat to a safe fallback point. After this skirmish he was awarded the [[Wikipedia:Silver Star|Siver Star]] and promoted to Major.

In late 2005 Kalus volunteered to go to the [[Wikipedia:Georgia (country)|Republic of Georgia]] and train paratroopers. He returned to the United States in March and has been living a peaceful life since.

In March 2006 Kalus received the Operation iraqi freedom badge and ribbon and received a promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel. On June sixth he celebrated his 17th year of military service.

The furry genre was firmly established by the start of the 20th century. Since then it has enjoyed many ups and downs in terms of popularity and acceptability among adults. In the later half of the 20th century, general attitudes towards animal related fantasy changed. Cartoons and literature focused most of their animal related efforts on the children’s entertainment market, inspiring many to believe that cartoons and animal stories were strictly for kids. Though this does not seem to have prevented adults from continuing to enjoy the antics of funny animals in the comic strips.

In the late 60’s the beginnings of a backlash against this could be seen. The pop culture of the late sixties and early 70’s used funny animal imagery in many creative works meant for adults. The Beatles wearing fursuits on the cover of Magical Mystery Tour and the advent of Robert Crumb’s [[Fritz The Cat]] showed that many creative people saw more use for animal characters than children’s entertainment.

Serious animal literature soon began to appear that proved to have surprising appeal for adults. Richard Adams’ [[Watership Down]] and Richard Bach’s [[Jonathan Livingston Seagull]] topped the best seller list in the early 70’s.

In the late 70’s, attitudes began to change again. It is a separate entity from what many fans of furry entertainment mean when they use the term furry fandom. To a traditional furry fan, furry fandom means fans of furry characters, period. But the community encompasses a great deal more than just the fandom for furry characters. It includes elements of religion, lifestyle and philosophy.

"Furriness" is the action of doing anything related to the furry character of a person.

===Furry lifestyle===

The most commonly stated interest cited among members of the community, other than an enjoyment of furry entertainment, is a sense some may have of personally identifying with a certain kind of animal.

This is a relatively common aspect of human nature. Many people may feel an affinity for a certain type of animal. Though it has rarely been something one had an open atmosphere in which to explore and get more deeply in touch with. The furry community, through its many virtual role play environments, provides this avenue for exploration into why certain people feel their particular affinity.

Some may view animals with a kind of religious reverence reminiscent of [[Buddhism]], [[Shamanism]] or [[Otherkin]]. They may feel that they are the reincarnation of an animal, or that an animal spirit watches over them.

===Furry sociability===

Others may join the furry community simply because it is a free environment where one can form friendships without the normal social problems of having to hide one’s sexual orientation. It is also a place where some may come to find compassionate understanding and assistance with personal problems. The furry community prides itself on a concept of open mindedness and tolerance.

===Misinformation===

Many people misunderstand the fandom due to a lack of non-prejudicial information being available. In many cases, the first things outsiders see of the fandom is sensationalistic [[List of media links|fiction on TV shows]]. Others may take note of the adult themed art on the net and assume this is the whole point of the fandom.

===Sexuality===

The free atmosphere of tolerance in the furry community makes it far more likely for members to be open about their sexual orientation. This has spawned the misconception that the majority of the fandom is gay. However, surveys and practical thinking dispel this theory as unlikely. It is far more likely that those fans of a standard heterosexual nature feel no need to talk about their sexuality or seek understanding of it. Thus, discussion of alternative sexuality would naturally be more visible.

Confessions of more unusual sexuality and lifestyle have also been noted in the furry community, and though the majority of furry fans will attempt to be tolerant, certain sexual practices will stretch the tolerance of certain furry fans to the breaking point.

In particular, discussion of [[bestiality]] is a trigger for angry debate within the community. Many insist that absolute tolerance must be absolute, while others resent the association of the fandom with a practice that is not only illegal in many places, but is considered by many to be a form of animal abuse. Animal abuse being something you would naturally expect would not go down well among a virtual society that is, for the most part, naturally sympathetic towards animals. Hence, bestiality is anything but an uncontested aspect of the furry community, as certain furry hate groups are prone to claim.

Another practice that sparks controversy from within the fandom itself is [[plushophilia]]. Though plushophilia is generally harmless in any physical sense, being confronted with it may trigger a protective reaction in a furry fan who collects plushies as treasured mementos of beloved characters. In a sense, sexualizing plushies may strike at the very heart of what endears many fans to the furry phenomenon.

===Fringe segments of the community===

Just about anyone with any kind of interest that can somehow be tied to furry can set up a new neighborhood in the furry community for that interest. Some of the more controversial fringe neighborhoods include [[Babyfurs]], who are interested in furry child characters, and [[Nazi Furs]], who are interested in furry World War 2 characters. For some reason, the furries who create these neighborhoods have a tendency to give them names that sound worse than the actual intent, and thus may generate prejudice or attract the wrong kind of attention.

It has also been confessed by certain furry haters that they attack furry fandom, not out of any belief that the furry fandom is any worse than other fandoms in these respects, but rather because it is much easier to get an entertaining reaction out of furries than it is to get a reaction out of [[Wikipeida:Trekkies|trekkies]] or [[Wikipedia:Otaku|otaku]].

Thus, the anti-furry movement exists largely for entertainment value and should be taken with a grain of salt. Furries may even be seen to play along with furry hate groups, as some furries insist that it is important to maintain a sense of humor about such things. Indeed, there is hardly a fandom in existence that does not parody and laugh at its own idiosyncrasies and stereotypes.

===Erotic furry art===

If one looks on games like Starfox and movies like Over The Hedge as the main furry genre, and the erotic art coming out of the community as a parody of the main genre, a direct parallel to anime and hentai can be seen. As well as a parallel with the general fantasy genre and erotic fantasy art. The major difference being that the output of furry titles by major companies is relatively small when compared to the output of other genres.

Thus it is easy to mistake the mature art aspect of furry fandom for being more prominent than in other fandoms. When, in reality, the amount of erotic content coming out of the furry community pales in comparison to the anime/manga erotic output, which is much better organized and even supported by the main industry.

Anime fans enjoy the availability of endless hours of erotic animation created by professional companies, and even the erotic manga comics created by anime fans display a level of professionalism that furry artists can not even begin to aspire to. Yet, this tends to not be a problem for anime fandom, as the high output of non-erotic anime keeps the erotic subgenre in perspective as parody. While with furry fandom, it is highly likely that the first output of the fandom an outsider will see will be something of an erotic nature or sexual humor art.

===Self criticism===

The furry community also is sometimes criticized by its own for being too tolerant of various things, especially the over visibility of controversial fetishes.

Particularly for those who are only in the community because of an interest in furry cartoons, it may be found painful that the community feels free to associate them with things that seem completely unrelated to a fandom for furry characters.

Other furries will then turn on those who claim not to want to be associated with every controversial element in the community and accuse them of being a detriment to the stability of the community, often accompanied with accusations of Nazi behavior or being a [[Burned Fur]].

Over the years many furries have left the fandom in a state of grief over such controversies and disputes.

However, the community is seldom able to be united on any single issue. And most attempts to force change fall flat.

Political topics in the community can revolve around pushing tolerance for controversial segments of the community, people trying to put limits on the genre celebrated by the fandom, and those who wish to completely separate the furry community from any relationship with the mainstream entertainment industry.

A typical example of furry politics is the attempt to draw a distinction between a “furry comic” created by self professed members of the fandom, and a traditional “funny animal comic,” created by someone who has not acknowledged a connection to the fandom. This type of political ploy may cause a lot of heated debate, but in the end there is no artistic difference between the two, and furry fans rarely stop to ask an artist’s affiliations before enjoying his work.

===Creativity beyond the furry genre===

Some creative members of the community create works that are not furry of nature. 2 The Ranting Gryphon creates rants on real world politics and the state of human society. A number of furry musical groups produce music without furry subject matter. Some furry online radio stations play popular music that rarely has furry subject matter. And some amateur film makers in the fandom create films that have no visible furry themes.

This sometimes brings the community unexpected positive attention. Though it further confuses people as to just what the furry fandom is supposed to be about.

The song has been taken by some as a statement to attempt to eliminate [[stereotype]]s of [[furry fan]]s and [[artist]]s, although the original intent was just to write a song about furries to serve as a general introduction to the community, with a bit of angst at the end.

There are two different release versions of The Furry Song; they share more or less the same backing track and the third verse is only slightly different from version to version.

The first version from August 2001, the ''Kwooky Womble'' or ''Boo!'' version (also known as ''I'm Furry''), arguably has the better groove but is let down by its final verse. At that point the song descends into lyrics about how terribly furries are mistreated by the media and everyone else in the world without offering any hope on what to do about it. The lyrical performance is also not the best. Kurrel deemed this version simply not good enough to be known for, and the song was promptly withdrawn from download pending a rewrite.

The second version from April 2004, the ''Kurrel the Raven'' or ''Hi!'' version, has a better fourth verse and far more animated delivery albeit with a slightly weaker groove. The song goes far more into the diversity of the furry community and goes very much on the attack in the final verse. Despite the marked improvement over the ''Boo!'' version, Kurrel again deemed the song unworthy to be offered for download due to its "myriad shortcomings" and was withdrawn once again from release.

At the current rate, a new official version may be available for download some time in 2007 and should be withdrawn shortly afterwards.

One of the earlier unreleased versions used a completely different backing and rap with a catchy ''doodle-doodle-doot-doo'' chorus.

An instrumental version of the ''Boo!'' version may have been floating around at some point. This version was even played at a gig that Kurrel DJed at and got excellent feedback at the time.

A recent unreleased version performed in a put-on Brooklyner accent (for extra intelligibility) features a spicy fourth verse which has some impolite things to say about somethingawful.com, along with an abundance of naughty words. This version is being held back from release mainly because Kurrel's Brooklyn accent is very patchy, but also because the song isn't good enough to release yet.

The first verse in both versions goes into what a furry is in terms of what sort of
creature/character is furry.

The '''Furry Music Foundation''' (also refered to as FMF) is a web site and archive dedicated to the promotion of music created by and for the furry community. The website, administered by [[Chama C. Fox]], includes profiles of many [[:Category:Musicians|composers and performers of furry music]] and has numerous songs available for download, as well as compiled collections of songs that are available on CD, including [[Furry Fantasies]], [[Silky Fur]] and [[Furry Fantasies II]].

== History ==
The Furry Music Foundation was founded in January 1997 by Chama, as he recognized the need for a music community within the furry fandom. Hitherto, there had been no distribution channel for musicians to show and share their works. With CD productions being too expensive and personal home pages too obscure, little was produced and even less actually heard. FMF helped change this.

For the first year, the site was hosted on [[Tigress.com]] in Germany, though for a number of years it was hosted privately in Sweden. In 2000, it underwent a structure and face change to the design by [[Nessus]] that is enjoys today. As the server in Sweden is now defunct, FMF is hosted since 2006 on the server of [[The Fauna Project]] in Germany with libraries in various countries.

Diapers are an item frequently used while "cubbing out". Like other aspects of babyfur, this can be done in the virtual world, the real world, or both. There are many babyfurs, however, that while they will wear diapers in online roles, do not in real life. Many babyfurs will wear diapers in real life for a feeling of security and comfort, but will not use them for their intended purpose. At the other end of the spectrum, there are some babyfurs that, either by choice or by necessity, wear and use diapers all the time.

Why babyfurs wear, and possibly use, diapers in the real world is varied. For some, they are forced to wear them because of a medical condition and have no choice in the manner. These people have often blended their real life situation with their furry persona. For others, it is a way they can regress into their [[fursona|furry persona]]'s age. Some others see the diapers as a connection to their furry persona, paralleling a [[tail]] or [[fursuit]] in the general furry community.

The wearing (and especially the use) of diapers in the real world are at the heart of many issues that some members of the furry community in general have with the babyfurs. For example, it is not generally considered appropriate for a diaper user to soil themselves at [[convention]] in the presence of other [[furry fan]]s - or to put themselves in a situation where this is likely to happen - yet individuals have been known to do this, to the detriment of the group's reputation.

==Babyfur behavior==

When cubbing out in both the real world and in online roleplaying, the level of connection to the role will vary between each player. Some babyfurs will become so involved and yearn for such an authentic childish mentality that they will use speech impediments and [[Wikipedia:baby talk|baby talk]] to communicate. Very few babyfurs make a habit out of using babytalk in the real world, similar to a [[Wikipedia:gay lisp|gay lisp]]. Depending on the situation, a babyfur could even develop a habit of whining or crying to get what he/she wants from a caregiver or another roleplayer.

In light online [[role-playing]], babyfurs may toddle, crawl and wag their tails playfully while the sounds of crinkling diapers abound. Pouncing, giggling, cuddling, [[snug]]gling and tummy rubbing ensue with the maximum possible level of cuteness.

Child-like behaviour, baby animal sounds and an emphasis on [[cuteness]] are widespread among [[furry fans]] when among themselves, even those who don't call themselves babyfurs and who don't participate in other babyfur activities described here, such as diapers or baby clothing.

While most babyfurs are closely attached to the development of young [[human]]s, a different approach can be found in online [[role-play]], where newborn [[zoomorphic]] and [[anthropomorphic]] [[characters]] often grow up at a similar pace as wild animals, doing without accessories such as diapers and learning to walk in a short time. This has the practical advantage of sooner getting into an age that allows interesting role-play even for non-babyfurs when playing a character since birth. ==Babyfur as a paraphilia==

A phenomenon exists throughout the furry fandom where it appears that a large amount of its members find a sexual attraction to anthropomorphic animals. As babyfurs are also furries, the phenomenon adheres to babyfurs as well. Because most babyfurs tend to enjoy roleplaying as children or toddlers, the question constantly arises: Are babyfurs pedophiles?

===Babyfur versus pedophilia===
Babyfurs are not inherently pedophiles. While babyfurs roleplay as underage characters, the vast majority are not sexually attracted to children.

As babyfurs are defined in section 1, most roleplay as young furries usually because of their longing to be young again; in fact, some babyfurs don't even include a sexual element in their interests (and some do). Babyfurs assert that an adult roleplaying a child should not be considered the same thing as a child.

As with the general population, however, a small subset of babyfurs may be pedophiles.

===Babyfurs vs. non-babyfurs===
The concept of babyfurs has grown quite contentious with some members of the [[fandom]]. Some furries and non-furries who have identified themselves as babyfurs or were identified by others as being babyfurs have acted inappropriately at [[convention]]s in the past. Such contentious behavior includes wearing diapers in public without using proper hygiene and trying to push uninterested people into babyfur [[roleplay]], including sexual roleplay. These behaviors are frowned upon by the babyfur community in general, and such incidents, when perpetrated by babyfurs, are done by a small number of babyfurs within a larger babyfur community. The community in general adopted guidelines of conduct for how to act in public after a rash of such incidents at conventions in an effort to police themselves.

Furries who dislike babyfurs may do so for a variety of common points, including:

*Grossed out by the concept of diaper lovers (or, in the aforementioned cases, by the smell)
*False belief that all babyfurs are pedophiles
*Previous negative experiences with those who identify themselves as babyfurs or were identified by others as being babyfurs.
*Fear that babyfur behavior will be associated as a characteristic of the general fandom, especially in the media

While there is some conflict between babyfurs and the general fandom, such conflicts are not widespread throughout the entire fandom nor are they very severe. The majority of babyfurs and non-babyfurs coexist quite well because the majority of babyfurs do not engage in the more extreme behaviors mentioned here.

The website also encourages furs to write and complain to the site. Many of which are then posted on the e-mail page to be replied to publicly. The site also hosts a gallery of photos it's collected of what it considers poorly constructed [[fursuit]]s.

On the 14 August 2005, [[WikiFur]] was mentioned on the website, including quotes from some of the less developed articles and mentioning the fact that some parts of the wiki were locked to editing due to vandalism. [[GreenReaper]] later contacted J to thank him for the link, which sent over 100 visitors to WikiFur. Wikipedia has the word [[Wikipedia:Yiff|yiff]] pretty well-defined. In short, yiff has several meanings, including:

* An expression of happiness and success
* General sexual activity or context (see [[yiffing]])

* Erotic or pornographic [[anthromorphic]] art

The latter is arguably the most common. Entire sites have sprung up around this, such as [[Yiffstar]], an erotic textual story archive.

== Origin ==

There are several stories relating to the origin of the word ''yiff''. One is that the term was coined by [[Foxen]] around 1990 as part of the foxish language. Most accounts suggest that the term started off "tame" and became more sexually charged as time wore on. Various sources also mention it could be named after the noise a fox makes while mating.

Another theory has it that ''yiff'' could possibly be lifted from 1970's gay slang, where it would have been an acronym for "Young Incredibly Fuckable Fellow".

'''Eurofurence''' is the biggest European furry convention and (as of 2005) the longest standing one still active. It was founded in 1995, and Eurofurence 11 at Nürnberg, Bayern, Germany saw more than 370 attendees.

It is typically located in various places of Germany, but it has seen other countries as well, notably Sweden, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. It is planned, however, that the upcoming twelfth Eurofurence will be held at the same place as the eleventh one, over 23-27 August 2006.

Since 1999, Eurofurence has been organized by [[Eurofurence e.V.]], a registered social organisation based in Germany. However, it is not limited to any specific location, and has many international members among its staff and members.

Eurofurence and the [[Mephit Mini Con]] share some lighting equipment and art panels for economy's sake, but are not officially related.
