Named after Maverick - a MUCK character known for frequent and embarassing misdirected messages - a mav is a page or pose sent to the wrong MUCK, person, or even from the wrong Alt on a MUCK.

In use, one often says "mav" alone after a misdirected comment.

Mavs are often humorous and revealing. It's not uncommon to be in the middle of a semi-formal discussion for example, only to have someone who's gone largely silent suddenly say "White-Delirium slides her hand up your thigh and feels your warmth."

While 'Mav' has meaning to the Furry Community, a shorter and easier to explain term can be used, 'mt', or 'mistell', something often seen in MMORPG's.
OOC Information/Background
I discovered FurryMUCK in Janurary of 1996, and began to learn my way around the virtual world that the MUCK presented. Fascinated with the game and the people, and the things that went on, I continued to immerse myself into the Furry world, as it existed over the Internet.

Being a programmer type before even discovering MUCK's, I began to learn the programming language of the game, MUF. And of course, my first real program was my first time getting into trouble with the wizards of FurryMUCK, as I dropped my Voting Booth program into the central room of the MUCK and proceeded to allow it to spam everyone in the room eliciting usage from others. It's a memory I'll never forget, because I got into an argument with Lynx over it while it was still spamming.

I learned my lesson though and continued to learn MUF. Some months later, I wanted to play on a Fantasy/Medieval world, but I couldn't find any. FurryMUCK just didn't really cater to my genre of roleplaying. I did discover several other Furry-type MUCK's though, like Sociopolitical Ramifications, Tapestries, and Furtoonia. And met a lot of interesting people. I suppose it was ment to be, that I would found and create a new MUCK, called MUCK and begin to build the world, along with some friends, that I wanted to play on. It was a lot of fun, but I was younger then and emotionally, rather spontaneously and prone to flare ups of temper. Yes, I suppose you could call them temper tantrums. I was prone to that back then. I suppose I still am, if severely provoked. But I try to keep a level head now.

After discovering ANSI color on a world called The Lion King MUCK I was absolutely amazed the idea eluded me. I'd run a BBS for several years and ANSI color with IBM graphic characters was a lot of fun and you could do so much. MUCK's didn't have the IBM graphic character, but ANSI color was a good start. This is about the time my MUF skills began to really blossom, I wrote many replacement MUFs for core MUCK programs, which had flashy coloring, and enhanced functionality. I took great pride in cloning many programs, most without ever seeing the original code.

During the work with FurryFaire, I became aquinted with a branch of the Fuzzball TinyMUCK server, called GlowMUCK, which offered a lot of things Fuzzball did not. It was much to my dismay, when it's developer ceased working on the project, especially with the Fuzzball team already releasing alpha versions of the 6.x line of TinyMUCK server.

Moving away from MUF and relinquishing my wizard positions on a few mucks, I began to work on a new breed of TinyMUCK server, picking up where GlowMUCK's author left off, I wanted a Fuzzball 6.x server with all of GlowMUCK's extras.

This is still an ongoing project, with new ideas being tried all the time, it'll never be finished I suspect. The project is FurionMUCK, a branch of the Fuzzball 6.x line, currently featuring a new way of storing the database, using MySQL as a backend storage mechanism, eliminating the need for DB dumps. You can study the project and what I've done over at Sourceforge.Net.
IC Information/Background
Chetar's background changes from world to world, as the player has adapted the character to several different types of settings. You'll just need to meet Chetar on a world to get a better idea of who Chetar is precisely.

Where to find
Chetar is primarily found on Tapestries, but also visits FurryMUCK on occasion. Chetar also exists on several other worlds, but is usually hibernating.

Known Alternate Characters
Chetar was the FIRST character I ever created, but Chetar was followed by the creation of Snowferret and Jinxie. Other alternate characters may exist, but they're specific to certain roleplays, or simply kept hidden for personal reasons. Snowferret eventually evolved into Syvel, the silkie, but that character has been retired as has Jinxie.
FurryFaire is an online anthropomorphic MUCK focusing on role-playing in a world of knights and fantasy.

FurryFaire is set in the mythical land of Kith Kanaan. Kith Kanaan is divided into a number of nations, each with a specific theme associated with them. The central region, and the primary role-playing area, is called the Shire Lands.

It reopened on a new server in 2005; it originally ran from around 1997.

The guardian of the Solar Temple of Kij is Jhazza kal Khett, daughter of Khett (the Archon of Death) and Mika, wife of the Lutrai Solinar known as Lairu. Jhazza's demonic heritage is evident by the tendrils that come from her back, and she is recognized as a powerful warrior, having harnessed the abilities of Wild magic.

* Kurosawa Kaede and Kurosawa Shiro (Naipon Embassy)

To the west of the Shire is the Naipon Embassy, which also doubles as the Anaithan Embassy to the Shire Lands. It is controlled by the daughter of Kurosawa Tashiro (locally known as Foxtrot), and her husband. Kurosawa Kaede is the daughter of Tashiro and his wife, Jade, and was placed in charge of the Embassy in the year 1025 AE.

Kaede is a striped fox, and is polite and somewhat distant. Her husband is Kurosawa Shiro, a demon hunter from the Saotome Clan in Naipon, who joined the Kurosawa Clan as part of an arranged marriage. He is a white fox, and a member of the Inari Shrine.

* Ralyn and Lina (Ralyn's Legacy)

Ralyn and Lina are the children of Kyn'Elwynn the Shadow Mage, and Amber, daughter of Mika. The name of Ralyn is a testament to the original Ralyn, the father of Mika. Ralyn is protective of his sister, and is a proud and noble member of the community, developing and defining himself as he steps out of his family's shadow. Lina is a budding sorceress, and has attracted the attention of powerful figures to the south, in the shadowy nation of R'Tal.

Technical History
According to Chetar

FurryFaire was originally founded by Chetar, Mystique, Duelist, and Shiamat, on May 26th, 1996. These four people build the foundation of the MUCK, namely Furryshire and West Wood, with Mystique providing much programming expertise to give the game a very special feel. Chetar, at the time, Head Wizard recruited a few other wizards.

Shiamat disappeared a short time after the muck's construction begun. The muck went through about 3 months of non-public running, with building, programming and ideas being put into place.

Kyn'Elwynn was originally recruited from FurryMUCK to help with building and administering helpstaff. Some time after that, Simba (now known as Benjamin) was recruited to manage conflicts and player creations.

Duelist provided the original server for FurryFaire, but after a falling out between Chetar and Duelist, the muck was taken offline and moved to a new server, owned by one of Chetar's friends.

Mystique eventually disappeared from the face of the earth (and I've still yet to see her since) leaving the muf programming in the hands of the headwizard, Chetar.

Over the early years, roleplay was highly promoted, and Chetar held regular meetings with the patrons of the world to see what was needed by them, what should be changed, etc. Chetar and Kyn'Elywnn recruited a good helpstaff to help with Tinyplot creation. At some point, Ollie Canal, aka Lairu, was recruited as the first RP wizard, while a roleplaying muf system was put in place to reward players for good RPing though a peer review system. This system was plagued with abuses though, leading to aggressive alternate character tracking to minimize abuse.

Chetar had at one time shut down the muck, for a brief period, because of a falling out with one of the players he was close to, and purged that player from the muck and banned them.

After a second occurance of this behavior, Chetar decided he was unfit to run the game and turned over administration of the muck to a new headwizard, Alaria. But Alaria was never given TRUE full control, with Chetar still behind the scenes.

After some time, Chetar decided FurryFaire was a burdon to care for and turned over the entire MUCK data files, domain name and GOD password to Snowpony and never looked back.

According to Tashiro

Snowpony ran FurryFaire until roughly 2002. At roughly this time period, the stress of operating FurryFaire become a bit much, and transfer of the position of Head Wizard was handed to Typhon, one of the players and Wizards who had been on the MUCK for most of the MUCK's running period. Snowpony retained control of FurryFaire as Site Wizard, and kept final authority of FurryFaire.

From 2002 to late 2004, FurryFaire suffered a long period of down time, languishing with very few active players. Speculation is that Typhon had recruited players from FurryFaire to bring to another MUCK, but did not fully promote FurryFaire. In 2004, Snowpony gathered the remaining Wizard Staff and Tashiro (then called Foxtrot), to discuss the MUCK's fate. Tashiro had been a member of FurryFaire since 1996, and accepted the position of Head Wizard, making a serious attempt to resurrect the MUCK.

Between 2004 and 2005, Tashiro organized the history of the MUCK and worked on unifying the various religions, nations, and organizations to create an in-depth back-story for the MUCK, and allowed initial building for preparation to open. In 2005, the MUCK was moved and re-opened, moving the time line ahead 20 years to allow as fresh a slate as possible.

As of the present, Tashiro remains in charge of FurryFaire as Head Wizard, while Snowpony holds control as Site Wizard. The balance of power between the two seems to work well.

== OOC Information/Background ==

Erm... I think this one should be flagged for NPOV. Additionally, it seems whoever wrote this doesn't seem to know that the GPL is not a perpetual, unrevocable license... Almafeta 20:40, 4 Nov 2005 (UTC)
:Regarding the GPL, I'm not sure the article actually implies that the license is not non-revokable. According to section 4 of the the GPL, the license can only be voided if the program was modified, copied, sublicensed, or distributed in a way other than the GPL allows. Looking at the article, none of that seemed to happen, just that Winged was had (presumably un-modified) copies of the program.

:Not having any additional knowledge about the situation, I don't know how to best word the entry, though. --Dmuth 21:11, 4 Nov 2005 (UTC)

:: I did some research about this, and yes, it does indeed seem that revocation is possible, and indeed more a problem for the GNU GPL than certain other "free" licenses. The revocation mentioned in the license is automatic, but the licensor ultimately retains the ability to revoke their license at any time (unlike a contract, which is not breakable on such terms due to the consideration given by the other party). Of course, doing so is against the spirit of the license, and therefore this is not typically a situation that comes about, but it is possible. --GreenReaper 04:50, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Use of revoked works
In an event the GPL is revoked from a piece of software, this prevents further distribution of the software under GPL's terms, but cannot require persons already possessing the software to stop using it.

I am unclear as to what legal basis there is for this statement. Copyright covers performance of a work, not just the action of copying. Moreover, it is very likely that copying is occurring, either for the purposes of backup or while actually running the code. Licenses are generally assumed to cover such copying - however, without the license, the right to perform such copies is similarly lost.

I have emailed GNU asking them about this. If I get a reply back, I'll post it here. :-) --GreenReaper 16:47, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)

:It had never occurred to me that running a program could be considered "public performance" in the same sense as performing a song in a public place. I think that's a highly questionable and rather unreasonable idea, though I'd love to see any references to how the courts have interpreted it. Likewise, I believe that copyright laws in the USA only restrict distribution of a work, as opposed to the mere action of copying it. Thus, any incidental copies made while running the code, making backups, and so forth would appear to be outside the scope of the law. -- Zobeid

::I believe it is against the law to copy material in most cases, but nobody really knows or cares about it if you don't distribute it (although it's probably possible to think up a case where someone would care). The sticky part comes when you're not distributing it but when you are distributing the results of running the code . . . which may contain copyrighted works.

::As to your specific concern, yes, it turns out there is a restriction in US law on exclusive rights that allows the owner of a copy to run it. However, note the lanugage - the owner can do it. But the MUCK does not own the code! They were licensed it under the GPL, and that license has now been revoked. This is why most software is not sold nowadays - it is licensed, to more clearly restrict the rights that are being transferred. The GPL is a license, not a transfer of ownership, and therefore if it is revoked there are no ownership rights, and so no rights to copy the code in the act of running it - or even to keep it. --GreenReaper 03:47, 11 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Err. . . Most software these days is indeed sold. Much of it also includes a EULA that says it's only licensed, not sold. But writing that in a EULA doesn't make it so -- sale is still a sale in the eyes of the law, no matter what you write in a EULA. Indeed, the holder of the copyright generally has nothing licensable except the distribution and performance rights. In the case of GNU software, once you've received it, it's in your possession, it's under your control, and its yours. A good comparison would be with a book. The book's publisher may lose his distribution rights, but the people who bought the book still own their copies and can do what they wish with them. As long as they don't engage in the activities that copyright law concerns itself with (namely, distribution and performance), there's no need for a license and no basis for one.

Put another way. . . For a software author to revoke my right to possess and use his software, he would first have to grant it. The law doesn't give him that power -- it would be redundant, because there is no law restricting my ability to own and use it in the first place. Copyright law doesn't concern itself with that. -- Zobeid

Somebody who actually plays there should add a bit about recent history. When I read what is written here, I am glad to have left the mess behind six years ago. I could contribute a lot more, but it would only be about the "golden age" with probably little relevance to what is going on there today. And I'm not so inclined to log in there as a guest to see how things might have changed in the last years/months. - Unci 17:08, 5 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Who Purged and Who didn't...
Actually, the history is inaccurate. I, Syvel, never @purged, and in fact, SPR still has in it's possession many of the original GPL'd works I placed there. I was brought in after Mystique and Murphy purged thier programs, crippling the MUCK, to help put it back together, and to bring in my colorized versions of many popular muck programs.

I do recall us running the restricted mode, a program which I wrote actually, but I talked to Snout today, and neither of us can remember WHY we did that. Maybe it had something to do with reconstructing.

I was originally brought in to help with SocioSpace, which Murphy wrecked with his purge, but I never got very far. Arian did a much better job than I did.

And I was never dewizzed for @purging, since I never did that. Even Snout would tell you, I retired my wizbit due to RL demands on my time and life, and no longer wanted to participate in the administration of a MUCK. It was about the same time I turned over control of FurryFaire to Snowpony.

The ONLY MUCK I've ever @purge'd myself (and programs) from, was Tapestries, and I was severely intoxicated at the time.

I'd have edited the entry itself, but I don't have a clear picture of what exactly took place then. It was a long time ago. It'd be nice if unci, or Winged, would chime in on that period of SPR history.

On GPL, yes, I did alter the licensing of my works about a year after leaving SPR's wizstaff, and tried to apply it retroactively, but found I could not, so I changed the new license to affect new releases only. This was in direct responce to continued plagurism of my works by unknown parties, but I found copies of my code, without my original GPL licensing or name, but the code was exactly the same otherwise, line for line.

As of this writing however, SPR still possesses older GPL licensed versions of my code, with my permission. When I was signed on as a wizard, I *PROMISED* Snout I'd never erase my code, no matter what happened, a promise I've still not broken, nor ever intend to break. I'm personally honored SPR still chooses to use many of my programs.

Thanks for reading to my side of the story.
