The Fauna Project

Chama:

__NOTOC__

The Fauna Project is a group of furries working for the promotion, creation and performance of furry music, and musical projects.

Their current goal is to produce an audio CD, the Fauna CD, described on their web site. With this project, they intend to collaborate with other musicians in the furry community.

The last CD of this kind, Furry Fantasies II, was created almost seven years ago, and the people who were involved back then are largely involved this time, too. However, Eurofurence XI and other events have shown that there are more and other talents in the fandom. The Fauna Project would like to support all of that, and provide a way to publish their songs and music. And with style, too.

Submitting songs
To submit a song, read the song submission guidelines at the Fauna Project web site. Musicians are required to provide full, non-exclusive distribution, performance and reproduction rights. Submissions need not be in a finished form. Sketches and demos are welcome, and if necessary, the Fauna Project will assist in producing, arranging and recording the songs. Performing musicians are also welcome, especially strings, various percussion, brass and woodwinds.

Current status
About half of the material for the first CD production is already submitted. More material is needed. Future CDs are in an early stage of planning. Recording and mixing in studio is yet to be done.

Chama:

Chama is still active? Wheeee! I haven't heard anything of him forever! Any new music?

*fluff*

--Unci 17:21, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

:Depends on how long its been since you've checked. I know he's still got one in the works as a free commission that I wrote the words for, for a friend of mine's novel ... he performs it so wonderfully .... unfortunately, he hasn't yet released a final recording for it (though, I understand, he performed it live at last year's Eurofurence).

:Hmmm, he seems to have taken down some of his music, notably 'move with the herd' ... and he has one piece on his own personal website at http://www.chama.de/index.html?page=music&lang=.en that he doesn't, for some reason, seem to have on the FMF.

:--Chibiabos 09:15, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

I just found this discussion (I'm not a heavy Wiki user, and I completely forgot that articles can have discussions), so here's a really, really late answer :).

Yes, I'm still active, though less than before. Work has really taken a toll on me lately, and I have had very little energy to finish music beyond the last Furry Music Café releases. I think this is very unfortunate.

However, I have great hopes for next year, as I'm working on Wolf Land. At least I'm going to try to get it finished and rehearsed in time for next EF.

I do not put entries I don't consider representative of my later development on FMF (Wake-up call, Rebellion etc.) since I think they're simply not good enough or others like the Laolala theme or Otter island, because they're just one-minute intros, and people probably want entire songs from me rather than just sketches or little intros. There are higher-quality productions, but they are not finished yet. Maybe it's time I got around to releasing some FMF material too.

Bein' Furry

2006-09-01T15:58:20Z

Chama: Added download link to FMF

Bein' Furry is a digital module in FastTracker II (xm) format composed in 1996 by
Mark Krepela, aka Nikas.

The lyrics are a tongue-in-cheek look at being a furry fan, from imagining having such maladies as dog breath, mange, and fleas, to the pitfalls of playing a furry-themed MU*, in this case a reference to the West Corner of the Park area on FurryMUCK.

The style of the music is difficult to classify, though it is rather similar to some other slow-tempo digital module music such as "Till Friday" (author unknown).

Bein' Furry was posted on the miscellaneous files section of Yerf at one time.

The Wolf In You

2006-09-01T15:46:39Z

Chama: Corrected some assumptions, wrote trivia

FF2
The Wolf In You is a song written and performed by Chama in 1999. It could be called the lifestyler's anthem, in that it deals with how to cope with having a lupine soul in the modern world. The song has enjoyed a fair amount of appreciation also in other circles such as the Were community.

Some people have called The Wolf in You one of the first Christian furry songs as part of its lyrics ask the listener what will happen to a fur who dies. Would they be allowed into heaven, or would they be damned to hell?

Trivia
The Wolf in You was originally a commissioned piece. However, though the song was finished to satisfaction, the agreed sum was never paid out and the commissioner subsequently disappeared.

Weasel's Return

2006-09-01T14:55:36Z

Chama: Added Category

Weasel's Return is a fiery scherzo written by Chama C. Fox in 2002 as a five-year anniversary to the first part Happy Weasel. Weasel's Return is using considerably more advanced technology and orchestration than its predecessor. The piece is largely defined by a swiftly rolling piano performance, exploring fugal themes and breaking classical conventions, and could thus have been part of a piano concerto.

Happy Weasel

2006-09-01T14:54:24Z

Chama: Added Category

Happy Weasel was written by Chama C. Fox in 1997 and was the first released music piece on the Furry Music Foundation. Using the rondo form and playful orchestration (mostly) in G major, it attempts to capture the nature of a happy weasel, not necessarily sharing the classical stereotype of weasels. The second part, written five years later is Weasel's Return.

Quote:
I asked the weasel "Why are you so happy?"
She answered "Because I am a weasel."

Chama: New article

The Furry Music Foundation (also refered to as FMF) is a web site and archive dedicated to the promotion of music created by and for the furry community. The website, administered by Chama C. Fox, includes profiles of many composers and performers of furry music and has numerous songs available for download, as well as compiled collections of songs that are available on CD, including Furry Fantasies, Silky Fur and Furry Fantasies II.

Though downloads are free and unrestricted, submissions to FMF are moderated. Each song is reviewed before it is entered on the web site. The site does not feature musicians or works signed to organizations that restrict copyright such as RIAA, GEMA, etc.

History
The Furry Music Foundation was founded in January 1997 by Chama, as he recognized the need for a music community within the furry fandom. Hitherto, there had been no distribution channel for musicians to show and share their works. With CD productions being too expensive and personal home pages too obscure, little was produced and even less actually heard. FMF helped change this.

For the first year, the site was hosted on Tigress.com in Germany, though for a number of years it was hosted privately in Sweden. In 2000, it underwent a structure and face change to the design by Nessus that is enjoys today. As the server in Sweden is now defunct, FMF is hosted since 2006 on the server of The Fauna Project in Germany with libraries in various countries.

Over the years, FMF has grown, and amassed furry composers, musicians and music from all over the world. Its members have created several CDs and other musical projects and on-going efforts such as Wolf Land.

Trivia
The song Happy Weasel by Chama was the first piece to be released on FMF. Five years later, Chama wrote Weasel's Return as an anniversary celebration. The title of the third part is not yet determined.

Stripes (song)

2006-08-30T13:16:13Z

Chama:

Stripes is a song written by Chama C. Fox in 1997, a hymn to tigers in an aggressive 7/8 beat, and in the keys F minor, F# minor and G minor. Relying on overlapping solo voices and a choir of layered vocals and largely synthetic instruments, it has a very distinct sound. Stripes featured on the Silky Fur CD, though in a slightly cut-down version.

Silky Fur was a furry music CD project featuring the musicians Sayh, Chama, Fairlight and NightCat. Being a very early furry music production, it was not of quite the high quality that later productions enjoyed. Despite several amusing errors in the booklet, Silky Fur nevertheless still stands as one of the first produced music CDs of furry fandom, and likely the first printed one as well.
