Natamba

Balana: /* History */

The Natamba is a fictional role-played pride on The Lion King MUCK that existed in the Golden Lands from May 2002-March 2005 and the Uzima Valley from April 2006-present. They have a relatively laid-back structure, with few border guards, and often share their food and water with those who intend no harm, both lions and other species.

History
The Natamba pride was founded by Tahzhoo in the Golden Lands in 2002. (Their previous owner, Balana, was toaded in February and he found himself in possession of the lands.) He had been living in his homeland of Uzima Valley since he came home and found his parents dead, eventually leaving them once he reached adulthood. Wandering took him to the Golden Lands where he was going to visit Nyanya and Balana, who he had come to know as a youth, but he found the lands abandoned. (This was due to a fire that had happened some time prior, ending Nabana's rule.) He set out to find others like himself who were lonely, and formed a small pride who ultimately came to settle in the Golden Lands and be known as the Natamba pride. Natamba means "Those who have found each other."

They stayed there until another fire broke out in 2005, where they were living homeless in Utatu for about a month, and then moved back to Tahzhoo's homeland, the Uzima Valley, following the final battle of the Kumalo conflict.

A large part of the pride broke away in May 2006 to reform the Kopje Valley Pride, which nearly saw the end of the Natamba, but it managed to stick it out and recover afterwards. Tahzhoo stepped down in January 2008 to his heirs, sons Ghedi and Sumi.

Location
The Golden Lands are about a day's travel to the southwest of the Pride Lands. The Uzima Valley is located just to the west of the Pride Lands.

<div style="float:right">__TOC__</div>
The Lion King MUCK was founded by Joshua C. Templin, and was originally based on his fan fiction The Tales of Tanabi. The storyline has shifted a number of times in the years since, with several resets of the Feature Characters from the movie.

This textual roleplaying environment has a rather high population of lions (as might be expected) including three official Kings and Prides. Leopards (as well as their melanistic individuals, listed as panthers) are also common, as are cheetahs, hyenas, and other African species.

Social groups
There have been a great many In Character social groupings on The Lion King MUCK, which have formed, faded, and/or been revived over the years. The most prominent of these have been the prides. There are officially three prides as of January 2008:
* Kopje Valley Pride, led by Mzohari, living in the Kopje Valley
* Natamba, led by Ghedi and Sumi, living in the Uzima Valley
* Tsavo-Pridelands, led by Mtukutu with his queen Hamaki, living in the Pridelands

There is also one unofficial pridal grouping:

* Life Valley Pride, led by Isago and Kimia, living in Life Valley

In addition, there have been groups particular to other species, or formed of more than one species. (Prides may have non-lion allies or members as well.) Though some attempts at such groups have been made in recent years, none of them are currently active.

Some of the past prides were:
* The Zari Bara Pride, a precursor to the Natamba
* The Celestial Volcano Pride
* The Kumalo Pride (Unofficial)
* Utatu, the longest-standing and largest of the prides
* Sisimka
* Maja Ardhi
* The Great Northern Plains
* Sol Rock
* The Foresworn
* Subugo
* Southlands/Plateau Waterfall
* Salako
* Lands of Hope
* Zaire
* Uzima Valley
* A number of incarnations of the Pride Rock Pride

Other past groups include:
* The Bloodclaw hyena clan, led by the lioness Achika
* The Damuamwa hyena clan, led by matriarch K'jasria and her mate Kesh'ra
* The Kaare hyena clan, led by Emengo, later Kinamkela and Shaka
* The Menders hyena clan, led by Bashak
* The Sumu hyena clan, led by matriarch Inda
* The Kisasa hyena clan, led by matriarch Kora'no
* The Shekwon pack of Ethiopian wolves
* The Kalakonje, a clan of cheetahs, other spotted cats, and a mouse

Rules
Since September 10, 2006, players are automatically "asked to agree to the rules every 90 days" upon connecting to the MUCK.

Guest characters
From 1995, The Lion King MUCK had a system of guest characters; these characters could become permanent, without the g. in front of the name, after a week. By December 1996, guest characters were still described in the rules and policies, but were no longer being created; new characters were created without the g.

Adult Male Lions
Prior to July 1998, AMLs were extremely limited on the muck. In an effort to keep them from overrunning the muck, and because there was no special title for pride leaders, there was a 'waiting list' of sorts that male lions went on to when they became adolescent. When the wizards saw fit (usually due to population growth or loss of a previous AML) they would have a 'mantlement' ceremony and allow the top adolescent on the list who was eligible to be granted the species of 'Lion' which meant they were eligible to lead a pride.

The rule as stated in the July 1998 revision of the rules and policies was that, discounting feature characters, "there is a limit of ONE(1) AML per player at any given time." Players could have more than one male lion character, but it had to be a cub, juvenile, or adolescent. The rules as of February 2002 stated "we will only be allowing ONE male lion per player" which allowed each player to have one male lion character of ANY age.

In October 2005, the rules were relaxed to allow each player to have up to two male Lion characters.

In June 2007, the rules were relaxed again to allow male lion characters to start at any age, as can any other character, and to remove the aging restrictions; previously a male lion character had to spend three months at each stage of cub, juvenile, and adolescent before reaching adulthood. The limit of two male lion characters per player remained.

Prides
Prior to July 1998, there were no official pridal rules. Any character that held the species of 'Lion' was entitled to have a pride. In an effort to make a distinction between AMLs and lion kings, a program called the Leonine Monitoring Program (LMP) was introduced. The limit on the number of AMLs the muck could have total was lifted, and the LMP was introduced to have 'automated' control over lion characters.

Under the rules of the LMP, once a lion turned adult, they were given the species 'Adult Lion.' A lion then had to spend a minimum of 3 months as an adult before he could apply for a pride. Once a lion had 5 lionesses listed in his pride and had been adult for 3 months, he was given the species 'Lion King.' If he dropped beneath 5 lionesses, his pride was disbanded and he was returned to the species of 'Adult Lion.' Only one king existed per pride, although some ICly had more than one king. After a lion had been adult for a year and a half (king for 15 months), he was given the species 'Elder Lion' and no longer eligible for kingship. Lionesses who were part of a pride were given the species 'Lioness' while those not part of one were listed as 'Nomadic Lioness'.

The LMP was disposed of sometime in 2001 or early 2002, and for a while all species remained as they were at its disposal. In early 2002, the rules were adjusted to drop the adult and elder distinctions. Any adult lion was simply listed as 'Lion' and kings had the species 'Lion King.' The naming of prides also returned to manual status, and was limited to the average number of peak connections during a given month. (The highest number of prides there were under this system was 3.) The rules stated that a king had to maintain 5 lionesses in his pride and have an average online time of 12 hours per week during a four-week rolling period. These rules were not often enforced, leading to a couple of the prides growing stagnant.

In June 2007, the rules for lion kings and official prides were changed: the wizards "dropped the limit on the number of prides that can exist on the muck, and adjusted some of the numbers required in terms of membership (dropped the number down to 3 lionesses and an additional 2 lions of any age/gender) AND adjusted pridal online times to include the pride as well as the king." Under the new rules about prides, there is "a five year (RL) maximum time period in which a character can start a pride which begins the day a lion becomes an adult. After this period has passed, male lions will no longer qualify to start a pride."

Interspecies mating
Until at least 2000, interspecies relationships, both romantic and parental, were common on The Lion King MUCK. Since at least 1998, the policy statement was that "the administration STRONGLY ADVISES AGAINST interspecies mating" and "NO offspring may happen of such union". The rules as revised in February 2002 have no mention of interspecies relationships; nor does the August 2006 revision. Even though not mentioned in the rules, cross-species are not allowed on the muck.

TinySex
Since at least 1998, explicit sexual roleplay (TinySex, or TS) has been allowed on The Lion King MUCK. The rules as revised in July 1998 stated that "The policy regarding TS is to restrict it to PRIVATE areas", that the activity not involve incest, pedophilia, or rape, and that a player involved not be a minor. According to the 2002 revision of the rules, "There are only two issues with this. It must be done in PRIVATE rooms, and it CANNOT be with a minor."

In August 2006, the rules were changed to include the statement that "sexually explicit content and activities have no appropriate location within our system.". Two new MUCKs, Otherlands and Romance in the Savannah, opened in the wake of this decision; both allow explicit sexual roleplay and the latter has the motto Adult Friendly African RP.

Balana

2007-10-19T22:45:40Z

Balana: /* History */

Balana is a lioness character from The Lion King MUCK, who has been in existance from March 10, 1997 - February 2, 2002, and January 31, 2004 - present. She was born in the Golden Lands and was once queen of the Zari Bara and Kopje Valley prides. She has been a resident of the Celestial Volcano, Utatu, and Natamba prides. Currently, she lives in the Kopje Valley pride, ruled by her youngest son Mzohari.

History
Balana was born in the Golden Lands to the lion Nabana and the lioness Kurana, moments before her younger brother and littermate Mtunga. Her cubhood was typical for that of any pridal cub until her mother Kurana disappeared over a waterfall in the lands. Heartbroken, her father fell into depression and became neglectful in his duties until the lionesses drove him out. Balana and Mtunga, not about to lose their other parent, took off after him. Once into the desert, Nabana managed to get his two cubs to the northern brink before he was attacked by a rogue. He fought the male off and saved his two cubs, but became mortally wounded in the process.

Balana and Mtunga managed to make it the Pride Lands' gorge and take shelter for the night, but when she awoke the next morning, Mtunga was gone. A search took her to the Pride Lands' waterhole. Tired, discouraged, and hungry, she ran into another lion cub who took her to where he lived, a refuge occupied by a panther and lioness couple, Amani and Kilonda. They adopted Balana, but this adoption meant little more than food and a place to sleep, because most days she roamed around still searching for her brother. She met many friends and family during this time, including lion cubs Simbayo and Nyanya, meerkats Kimya and Msondo, and Kilonda's father Siombe.

Kilonda's death in Balana's late cubhood prompted Siombe to adopt Balana, and she moved in with his pride to the Celestial Volcano. Some time later her mother Kurana turned up and took Siombe's adoptive brother Mohatu as a mate and settled in the Kopje Valley. Balana spent time with both sets of parents and amongst the prides, but also tended to go roaming from time to time, much to their dismay.

Once into adolescence, she moved out and took a betrothed, Simbayo, but ultimately ditched him in favor of Nyanya in the early stages of adulthood. Balana and Nyanya formed a small pride and went back to the Golden Lands, serving as their queen and king, with Balana pregnant. Nyanya fell blind shortly before their four cubs were born (Lesana, Nabana, Nyoyo, and Shaujo), and after becoming fond of another lioness, Tarlia, when he thought Balana had left him, and after the death of Lesana, he faked his death. Balana took the three remaining cubs to live with Siombe for several months, which she spent as a long period in mourning.

Eventually, Balana returned to the Golden Lands to try and resume some sort of normal life. She would come to find out that Nyanya was alive, could see, and was bringing a pregnant Tarlia home with him. This was the beginning of a rift between the two lionesses that lasted many seasons. Although Balana managed to forgive Nyanya, their son Shaujo didn't, and soon took off to parts unknown. Nyanya and Tarlia's first litter (Jaoja, Twanka, and Desmei) brought some joy to the pride for a while, but after Desmei and Nyoyo died, and Twanka also wandered off, there weren't many left in the Golden Lands.

Three more litters came after Balana and Tarlia's first litters were nearly adults, both having two girls. Balana had Alaira and Kisiri, and Tarlia had Tanja and Kya. One of the other lionesses, Miara, had a son Watuku. However, the pride dwindled, and found Tarlia, Jaoja, Tanja, and Kya wandering off to the Pride Lands, and Alaira and Kisiri nearly following. Balana and Nyanya brought Tarlia and her daughters back home, but it was a short-lived victory, for soon after Nyanya fell ill with the sleeping sickness, which ultimately came to be his end, and the rest of the pride slowly went its separate ways.

Balana was the last of the pride left there when the first fire struck. She escaped with her life, as well as the lives of two of the local meerkats, and once again headed for Siombe's. After some time recuperating and finding out that Nabana was reforming a pride in the Golden Lands, she went between the two places for a while, and spent some time with Shaujo's son Weupe in a semi-nomadic lifestyle for a few seasons, never really growing close to the new pride Nabana had formed.

One of these returns to the Golden Lands had found it once again consumed by fire, and her unaware of any survivors. Here she set out to find Nabana, a journey which lasted over a few seasons and many miles, taking her far away from those she knew who were left. She eventually gave up her search and returned to her brother Mtunga's pride, where she lived in partial seclusion until she heard that an old friend (Tahzhoo, who had visited on a few occasions during his youth) had taken up residence in the Golden Lands with a small pride.

Bloodclaw

2007-03-05T02:45:18Z

Balana:

The Bloodclaw was an early "clan" of various species, active on The Lion King MUCK in the mid-nineties, until the emergence and eventual dominance by a rival clan known as the Kaare, composed mainly of hyenae. The Bloodclaw claimed approximately ten to twenty members at any given time in its history, and was the foremost "baddy gang" for much of its life. The clan was characterized by random acts of violence and ongoing feuds with do-gooders. One such act was the killing of the lion Dukat.

No remaining websites, online roleplay logs or art about the Bloodclaw are known; something may possibly be accessible through archive projects.
