Over the years, as more and more furs showed, the gatherings became larger and larger.

The idea of holding a furry convention was raised by several members of the Atlanta furry community, first in 2001 when nothing became of it, and then again in 2003. As a result of several planning sessions held in August of 2003, a concrete plan emerged to hold a convention in February 2004. The name chosen echoes that of the American anime convention, Anime Weekend Atlanta.

Although the convention originally was held around Valentine's Day, often with a similar theme (represented in the conbook and on the con shirt), the event was rescheduled to a mid-March timeframe in 2009. As of April, 2016, it is the 5th largest furry convention.

Organization
Furry Weekend Atlanta is produced by Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation incorporated in the State of Georgia. Furry Weekend Atlanta Inc., in turn, is headed by an Executive Committee and tasked with operating the yearly convention, and promoting the acceptance and appreciation of the anthropomorphic fandom in the Southeast and throughout the country as a whole. As a non-profit corporation, only funds necessary for the continuing operation of the convention are retained; the remaining funds are donated to appropriate charities.

In addition to operating the convention, Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc. also maintains Georgia Furs, and works to organize the Georgia furry population for entertainment and service.

Furry Weekend Atlanta became a federally registered trademark on 2 December 2008.

Executive Committee
The current Executive Committee of Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc. consists of:
* Tiger Paw, Chairman/CEO, a businessman from Atlanta.
* Tiger Nick, Co Chair/COO - a AV Tech, and full time Dad from Michigan.

Staff
At the end of every convention, Furry Weekend Atlanta showcases it;'s staffing ranks for the next convention season in a meeting held usually following closing ceremonies. 2 Sense 2.0 debuted on November 12, 2006 and ended at Episode 52. These areas are religions (rants about holy wars, prayer, and Christmas), political issues (delving into such issues as gay pride, hunting, guns, abortion, and the U. S. military), and the furry fandom itself. Rants on the latter are geared specifically to that community, and thus less accessible to those outside the fandom, and have dealt with Further Confusion, Anthrocon, fur artists and "Muck Talk".

The rants were originally scripted and were released on average once every two months. Their main purpose was for 2 to spread his opinions.
His latest rants have dealt with intelligent design, the news media and justice. He has also released his second outtake reel, and has moved on to producing his rants in video format, which he started posting to YouTube in March 2007. A committee was soon brought together, including P.Pardus, Terry Wessner, Silfur, Benjamin, and Wilykat.

In a retrospective on Feral! published in Feral! 2007's conbook, Wessner credited the origins of the Feral! name to MelSkunk, stating they were looking for a name that was "evocative without being too open to ridicule". MelSkunk suggested the name, which was immediately adopted by the convention's staff.

While initially a three-day event in its first year, the camp's duration was increased to five days in subsequent years to permit for additional workshops and camp-related activities.

Guests of Honour
* 2001*: Uncle Kage, chairman of Anthrocon
* 2002: Jessica Willard, furry artist and creator of Falstaff
* 2003: Krahnos and Roxicat, furry artists
* 2004: Iyu and Aethan, creators of Circles
* 2005: Anklebones and The Wormwood, furry artists, Sean and Andrew Rabbitt, owners of Rabbit Valley Comics, Oakshadow, furry writer
* 2006: Uncle Kage and 2 the Ranting Gryphon, comedian
* 2007: Ferris, Gideon Hoss, and Max Blackrabbit, furry artists
* 2008: Two Ontario artists, Ferris and Patches were showcased
* 2009: Flain Falcon, podcaster and Kyell Gold, furry author
* 2010: Colson Grainger, musician and Ivybeth, artist
* 2011: Black Teagan of Blotch, furry artist, and writer Rikoshi
* 2012: Grimal, cartoonist and illustrator and Arius, artist and graphic designer.
* 2013: Anyare, Gishkishenh and Patto, three Canadian artists

Prior to 2001, workshop instructors tended to serve as guests of honour and weren't specifically publicized as such.

Programming
Though Feral!'s events have not always been the exact same from year to year, some of the more well-established ones have become tradition:

* Predator & Prey: Sometimes better known as The Survival Game or The Food Chain Game, participants are split into three groups based on the roles in an ecosystem - carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores, which can eat any animal below them in the chain. The objective of all participants is to consume as many creatures as possible by tagging them while stopping at food and water stations. "Special" roles in the ecosystem (such as disease, fire, etc.) are often performed by Guests of Honour, with amusing results.
* Capture the Flag: Teams compete against each other in an all-out fight to get the other team's flag and bring it back to their own goal. The game is played with LARP (live-action roleplay) rules, meaning the foam swords tend to fly.
* Cabin Skits: On the penultimate day of the camp, cabins come together to perform skits for the remaining campers. First introduced in 1999, it tends to be one of the more nervewracking events for campers, intimidated by the prospects of getting up and acting in front of their peers - but several memorable skits have come out of this event.
* Musicians Circle: An opportunity for furry musicians to perform for an audience of peers and admirers, covers and original pieces are sung on stage. Normally they are solo-performances but occasionally duos and groups form during the camp.
* Poetry Corner: A tradition since 2003, furry poets bring their poetry, or perform the poetry they wrote during workshops at camp, for an audience. Sometimes accompanied by coffee or wine, and applause is replaced by finger snaps.
* Dances: Camp Feral's dances have always been unique. At Camp Kinark they took place in the woods and featured DJs spinning vinyl with laser and light shows shimmering off the trees and leaves. At Camp Arowhon, they take place in a newly built (2012), very large multi-purpose performance hall. There is a stage for DJ's and a backstage dressing room used as a headless lounge.

Mascots
Feral!'s first mascot was Farley, a distinctly Canadian-looking lynx character created by Benjamin prior to the first edition of the event in 1998. Farley appeared in the first Feral! con book, later entitled the Feral! Survival Guide.

Mascots tended to consist of contributions from artist Guests of Honour to the Survival Guide for the next several years. In 2006, to coincide with the 'Clan Challenge' activities four different mascots were introduced. Completed by artist team The Wormwood and Anklebones, each mascot represented one of the four clans at Feral! - Geist for Earth, Misha for Fire, Aelos for Wind, and Kabalo for Water. In 2006 a series of four t-shirts were made with the mascots, making Feral! the first furry convention to offer such a large variety of art shirts for sale in a single year. Unfortunately, the four mascots parted ways with Camp Feral! immediately after 2006.

In 2007, furry artists Ferris and Patchouli collaborated to create a new mascot, Pawnee (sometimes written as Pawnie), which now appears full-time on Feral!'s website. Patchouli also designed a female porcupine named Weeko. Ruger, a character who hails from rural Ontario and was created by Gideon, acts as a third mascot. These three mascots have been present on the cover of the conbook from 2007 to 2009, as well as the 2008 and 2009 art t-shirts.

Sites
Camp Arowhon
Camp Arowhon is a campground nestled deep in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. GPS co-ordinates to Camp Arowhon are: 45.595783,-78.730946. With its own lake, its facilities are well-suited to the convention due to the fact that it hosts several summer camps for children during a two-month period throughout the summer (its main log cabin hall for campers, built in 1928, can host almost 350 people). The facility provides lifeguards, all equipment and scheduled times for kayaking, canoeing, sailboarding, and swimming. Recent events have been hosted at the conclusion of the camping season, prior to the site undergoing maintenance.

Arowhon hosted the first Feral! in 1998 and again in 2004 through 2012. The event will return to the venue in 2013.

* Camp Arowhon website

Kinark Outdoor Centre
The Kinark Outdoor Centre served as the venue for Feral! from 1999 to 2003. It was first used when Camp Arowhon had no time slot available for Feral! 1999. It is located in the Haliburton Heights region of southeastern Ontario, Canada, very near to a small town named Minden. This venue bears a hilly terrain with its own lake, which quickly earned the nick name of "Lake Nestea" due to the particles of leaves from the nearby trees (tannin) that gave the water a deep golden hue. Where Arowhon excelled in rustic charm, Kinark had the advantage of being a more modern facility which had a few class room spaces with good resources available for workshops.

* Kinark Outdoor Centre website

Transportation
Camp Arowhon is about a 3 hour drive from Toronto. Attendees can either drive themselves, carpool or take the Feral Bus for a nominal fee ($45 roundtrip as of 2013). The bus departs either from Yorkdale Mall or the nearby "Roo Den", both of which are accessible via public transportation. Toronto has a subway system, but it does not go to the Airport. There are straightforward bus routes to the Camp Feral bus departure point, but Toronto's large transportation system may overwhelm new visitors. Fly-in should research busss and pay close attention to the instructions on the Camp Feral website regarding arrival and departure guidelines, to make sure they don't miss the bus.

References
<references/>

External links
* Camp Feral! website
* [http://www.twitter.com/CampFeral Camp Feral!
Atlwolf:

unreferencedPost-con depression, also known as PCD or Post-con syndrome, is a temporary mental condition that may occur in individuals near the end of or shortly after a furry convention or furmeet.

The most common symptoms are typically psychosomatic and include depression, loss of appetite, insomnia, and in rare cases, headaches.

Causes
There are many reasons for PCD, caused either by the special demands brought on by conventions, or the immediate events after a convention.

There is a biological theory of why this may happen. If a person has so much fun at a con that they use up all their happy hormone (serotonin) they may feel depressed until their body has time to make more.

Physical
Despite being a mental state, the physical status of a person can often point to many causes for their behavior as well, all of which can be traced back to the convention itself. Many of these causes only arise after the convention, since any given problem may only appear once the fur has calmed back down and attempted to settle back into their normal daily demands.

* Physical exhaustion - The stress of walking around with items for several hours on end may be physically exhausting; even if this stress is not acknowledged during the convention, it can catch up with an individual eventually.
* Poor Convention diet - Being away from home (thus hindering the preparation of homemade meals) and trying to save money for other resources like merchandise, commissions, and lodging, some people may try to cut back on how much they spend on food.
*:As cheap food usually isn't the most healthy, this poor diet and the malnutrition that goes with it often contributes to a bad mood. In addition to poor diet, the party atmosphere may encourage people to drink or use other drugs they wouldn't normally consume, contributing to hangovers and other undesirable side effects.
* Lack of sleep - A desire to experience as much of the convention as possible can cause people to reject their normal sleep patterns, staying up late for dances or mature-themed panels. This disruption can reduce the amount of energy people have, making them more irritable. In addition, there is some evidence to suggest disrupting sleep can induce depression.
* Exposure to foreign illness - All sorts of people come from several parts of the world to attend conventions, and many of them may carry some form of illness (recovering, current, or only recently infected). As a result, conventions are a major infection vector. This is also a primary source of Con Crud.
* Alcohol Consuption - Alcohol is classified as a Central Nervious System depressant. Binge drinking specifically, can contribute to feelings of unhappiness.

Mental
Unlike the transition from a fur's normal life to a convention, the adjustment back may be difficult for several reasons.

* Unhappiness with real life - Conventions are seen as stressful yet fun, while normal life may merely be stressful. As a result, there is less enjoyment to be found in normal tasks, and this re-adjustment to normal behavior can cause problems.
* Separation from friends and family - Furs may be more social at conventions than they are in real life, and this separation merely reminds them that the time spent at convention is only temporary and fleeting.
* Adjustment of social status - Individuals that are popular at conventions may not be so in the 'real world' and so the check to their ego may cause old issues in real life to flare up.
* News events - The world does not stop for a convention, and so shocking news of events that people missed while away may jar them, especially if the event is a serious one like the death of a family member.
* Money shock - If someone has overspent at a convention, they may become highly sensitive to future spending efforts, at least for a little while, to compensate for the added costs.
* Over Stimulation - It has been speculated that increased social stimulation may use up available serotonin in the pre-frontal cortex. In addition norepinephrine and doplamine systems may also be involved and contribute to a "con hangover"

Treatment
Post-Con Depression, like most holiday-related stress, typically goes away on its own after a few days as the individual settles back into their daily lifestyle. In spite of this, the intensity of the depression
may be difficult, so there are a few things that can be done to mitigate this stress.

* Take care of your body - Healthy behaviors will usually be enough to counteract most physical stressors. Showering, sleeping a full night's rest, and eating properly will help your body to cleanse itself. If you believe you are becoming ill as well, take vitamins and whatever other medicines are needed.
* Analyze your convention experience - Posting to an online journal or on a forum about the great time you had at the convention will help encourage others to do the same and to talk with you about it, providing social support and allowing you to see that many others are having the same issues with returning to normal life. Also, reliving the good parts of the convention may help you feel better.
*:If you work at conventions and/or this convention didn't go as well as you hoped it would, this is also a good time to consider how you can improve on things for next time to make your next convention a better one.
* Look forward to other conventions - There's always next year, or the next con as the case may be, and that means you have plenty of time to prepare for it now! Take advantage of this and get ready!

References
<references/>

See also
*Con Crud
*Con Funk

de:Post-Con Depression

Although the convention originally was held around Valentine's Day, often with a similar theme (represented in the conbook and on the con shirt), the con was rescheduled to a mid-March timeframe in 2009. It is the 4th largest furry convention.

History
Furry Weekend Atlanta was the logical outgrowth of furry gathering held for years in Atlanta at the homes of various furs. Over the years, as more and more furs showed up in the metro Atlanta area, the gatherings became larger and larger. The idea of holding a furry convention was raised by several members of the Atlanta furry family, first in 2001 when nothing became of it, and then again in 2003. As the result of several planning sessions held in August of 2003, a concrete plan emerged to hold a convention in February of 2004. The name chosen echoes that of Anime Weekend Atlanta.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2004
About 270 people attended the first Furry Weekend Atlanta at the Holiday Inn Airport North from February 13 to 15 in 2004. The guests of honor included Bill Holbrook and Matt Burt.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2007
Furry Weekend Atlanta 2007 selected the Sheraton Gateway Hotel as its new venue. The Holiday Inn Airport North had become too small for the size of the convention, and the new facility offered roughly double the space available to the rapidly growing convention. However, the Sheraton itself was sold out before the 2007 convention. The final attendance count was 762, a 37% increase over the previous year. Guests of honor were Lizardbeth and Matthew Ebel. 1,371 attended.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2010
FWA 2010 returned to the Atlanta HIlton on March 25th to 28th, 2010. The theme was "Carnaval", with Kamicheetah as the Guest of Honor, and 1,564 guests attending.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2011
FWA 2011 is tentatively scheduled for March 2011 with location TBA. The theme will be "Furries in Wonderland".

Organization
Furry Weekend Atlanta is produced by Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc., a 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation organized pursuant to the Georgia Non-Profit Corporation Code.

In addition to operating the convention, Tiger Paw also moderates GeorgiaFurs, and works to organize the Georgia furry population for entertainment and service.

Furry Weekend Atlanta became a federally registered trademark on 2 December 2008.

Executive Committee
The current Executive Committee of Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc. consists of:
* Tiger Paw, Chairman/CEO, a businessman from Atlanta.
* Kiran Lightpaw, Director of Operations, a businessman and software engineer from Huntsville, Alabama.
* Ulf Formynder, Set/Strike Coordinator, a broadcasting student from Atlanta.
* Tiger Nick, a Graphic Designer, and full time Dad from Atlanta.
* Hux, Director of Programming, a businessman and software engineer from Atlanta.

Staff
At the end of every convention, Furry Weekend Atlanta opens its staffing ranks for the next convention season in a meeting held usually following closing ceremonies. The sanctuary is a state and federally licensed facility operated by Craig and Debbie Cylke, both of whom are certified in wildlife rehabilitation. To date, the sanctuary’s dedicated staff has educated over 100,000 children and adults through on-site course offerings, summer camps, and mobile education programs. Furry Weekend Atlanta attendees donated almost $4,000 to the Sanctuary in 2006, and almost $3,000 the year before.

The official charity for 2007 through 2010 is Conservator's Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization working for the preservation of target threatened species through scientifically responsible captive breeding, organizing and participating in a coalition of organizations to manage and mediate animal emergency and crisis resolution situations nationally while serving as a resource for the educational and scientific communities.

See also
* :Category:Furry Weekend Atlanta staff

References
<small><references /></small>

External links
* Furry Weekend Atlanta &ndash; Official website.
* Furry Weekend Atlanta Message Board &ndash; FWA's Message Board.
* Furry Weekend Atlanta Community &ndash; FWA's LiveJournal Community, open for general posting.
* con resources
Conventions

Featured article

de:Furry Weekend Atlanta
es:Furry Weekend Atlanta
fr:Furry Weekend Atlanta

The domain became defunct by the end of 2005, and the forum was resurrected by Durango in early 2008, with a cleanup of spam accounts and threads in the summer of that year.

FLORA as de-facto mailing list
In the meantime, the intermittent downtime of the forum forced otherwise active members in other parts of Georgia and nearby locales in surrounding states (Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina) to use the FLORA mailing list, which is primarily focused around the furry population of the Atlanta metropolitan area (site of the Furry Weekend Atlanta convention). As a result, the present incarnation of the GeorgiaFurs.com has not yet gained back its original membership, but is rapidly growing again in popularity as an alternative to the unmoderated FLORA list.

With many member applying to FLORA and never being able to be added, some locals started another Yahoo group called the Atlanta Regional Furry List.

Another active in-state regional group is the Savannah Furs, while neither a mailing list nor a LiveJournal community for Middle Georgia Furs have yielded noticeable discussion or membership.

See also
* FLORA - a more active mailing list for Georgia furs, although it is Atlanta-focused
