Arloest

2011-09-13T12:20:00Z

Atara: Copyedited and general cleanup

Arloest is a panda character in the webcomic Jack. She is introduced in the arc Dinner at Arloest’s as a clairvoyant who runs a restaurant and makes personalized fortune cookies for the patrons.
David L. Hopkins, the creator of Jack, stated that Arloest is a guest character in his webcomic, and belongs to a his friend.

Arloest was one of many of Drip's victims, and one of the few who survived. Following her release she became obsessed with wanting to control her own destiny. When she realized this was not possible she hung herself and went to Hell. She was given ESP so she could see her future and control her fate. However, Hell had played a trick on her, for the gift was useless in a realm were time was irrelevant. Fortunately, Drip was forbidden to harm anyone in Hell that he had also harmed in life, unless they came willingly to him.

Arloest sold her soul for a chance to return to earth with her Hell-acquired gift to see the future. Once again she was foiled, this time by her own ambitions. When she was restored to life she found that she didn't want to know her future. Instead, she learned to control her Future Sight and used it to help others.

She consciously made the mistake of saving the lives of two people by helping them avoid a cataclysmic highway accident. She did this knowing Jack would find her when he came for them and found them still alive.

Jack had no choice but to hand her over to Drip. In his infinite cruelty, Drip caused her to forget the friends she made in her second life, and only allowed her to remember her promise to never forget them.

Later, Arloest was freed by Jack and Farrago under the technicality that his restoring her life was a violation of the rules, and therefore her contract with him was null and void. Freed from her bondage to Drip, her soul was reincarnated along with Virgil as her fraternal twin.

Drip swore revenge, and used his own son Fnar to seek vengeance.

Seeker

Seeker appeared in the serial Seeker’s Quest by Chuck Melville, which ran for several issues in the Furversion fanzine.

Seeker was one of the original inhabitants of the ancient cities of Katara during the beginning days. She lived in the city of Eeronwi, and was known at that time as the Artisan, an artist without peer. Like the rest of the people born during those happy times, she was a Firstborn, endowed with such vitality that she and her fellows were potentially immortal, provided they were not directly killed.

When the Lord of Shadows, the Murk, destroyed the first cities, she fled into the mountains, carrying the only artifact she could save, a sword made from fine crystal. Looking back upon the burning cities, she swore vengeance against the Murk.

Over the dark days of the centuries to follow, she took on a new name, Seeker, and proceeded to wander the countrysides of the young world in search of the missing Lord of Light, Aln, in hopes of persuading him to return to his followers, to confront and defeat his ancient enemy, the Murk.

Afterwards, Seeker dedicated herself to passing along the knowledge of the fallen cities, and the teachings of Aln. She took on many students over the years, teaching them small and great things. She became known as the Wisar (the Kataran word for ‘teacher’). When her teachings began to include what the younger folk began referring to as ‘magic’, she was renamed the Sorceress (from the Kataran word, ‘wisarna').

From time to time, the Murk would reassert himself into the mortal world and spread death and chaos. During one such outbreak, the Wisar took the sword of crystal that she had spirited away from Eeronwi and magically consecrated it to the powers of Light, turning it into a mystic weapon. But, to her chagrin, the sword’s magic would not work for her. The Light chose who was to be the bearer of the Sword of Crystal, and would not allow the Wisar to be the vessel of her own vengeance. She had to content herself to be the companion and advisor to the Champions, rather than be the Champion herself. In time, she learned to her bitter regret, that vengeance resolved nothing and brought no satisfaction. The Sword of Crystal passed from her hands to a line of succeeding Champions, before finally winding up in the hands of the current Champion of Katara.

When the dark forces of the Murk reawakened and attempted to establish a new religion among the peoples of Dogonia, the Sorceress joined with the Magi (the association of Sorcerers and Wizards of the Free Lands) and the Dogonian royalty to destroy the Murk’s dark religion and thwart his plans forever. But she was betrayed by the Dogonians, who went beyond their stated plans to simply arrest and imprison the leaders of the Murk-inspired revolt, but instead slaughtered them in a bloody war. She severed her ties with the Dogonians and with the Magi, and took in a child who was a survivor of the massacre, a young vixen named Felicia, daughter of a slain nobleman.

Seeker raised the child as her own, taught her magic and the teachings of the Lord of Light. But when the vixen was of age, Felicia attempted to murder the son of the wolf who had murdered her parents. This led to an unhappy split between mother and adopted daughter, and Felicia soon went away to pursue her own way into the ways of magic and to seek her revenge. Seeker fell into recluse, and now spends her time watching her wayward daughter from afar, not interfering, but from time to time sending aid in secret.

Besides appearing in the Seeker’s Quest serial (as yet uncompleted) in Furversion, Seeker (in one or more of her identities) appears as an occasional supporting character in the Felicia stories.

Mxali (/m'kǁɔ:li/) (born October 25, 1986) is a senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in Biology with minors in Entomology and Mathematics. He is currently serving his second term as president of SOAP, the Society of Anthropomorphics at Virginia Tech. His fursona is a black-backed jackal. The name Mxali contains an alveolar lateral click.

Background
Mxali is originally from Newport News, Virginia and currently resides in Blacksburg, Virginia where he attends school. He often does things backwards– he became president of SOAP before he considered himself to be a furry (which did not happen until Midwest Furfest 2007). Outside of the furry fandom, he is a beekeeper, plays and composes for the piano, and trains in Wushu (Chángquán style). Mxali tends to keep exotic pets: currently he has a pet emperor scorpion named Grace Kelly. He has been a member (and president) of SOAP since August 2007.

Fursona
:Mxali "Biohazard" Nkosinathi Xaqa is a black-backed jackal from South Africa. He has natural fur coloration, blue eyes, and stands about 6' 2". His clothing styles include casual lounge clothes, motorcycle jackets, Italian suits, and full hazmat suits depending on the portrayal, although a lab coat is his most common motif. Additionally, he rides a Vespa, and, like the real Mxali, keeps bees. He often exhibits the characteristics of hypomania and bears symptoms of megalomania.

The most common back-story portrays Mxali as the ill-appointed head of a fictional, utopian terrorist organization called the Johannesburg Organization for Emerging Research and International Egalitarianism ("JOERIE" is also a local name in South Africa for the antlion larva). His nickname, "Biohazard," resulted from his reputation for carrying out dangerous and ethically questionable biotechnological experiments, some in which he was his own subject. His areas of expertise are viral engineering, genetic modification, and cybernetic implants.

Unconfirmed records state that Mxali rose quickly through the ranks of the organization, possibly through foul play. The former vice-chairman issued a statement claiming that the chairman vacated his position after being infected by one of Mxali's novel viruses, giving up his position in exchange for the antivirus, but before having the chance to back up his claims, he disappeared. Since his takeover, Mxali has directed the organization away from overt terrorism, preferring a more behind-the-scenes approach manipulating and influencing the global black market.

Mxali claims to have "effortlessly" developed cures for various cancers, HIV, and an easy weight-loss drug with virtually no side-effects, but refuses to reveal them. "I'll tell someone eventually," he once told an assistant, "for the right price."

He destroys his research notes immediately after taking them to avoid leakage of information. It appears that he relies on some sort of eidetic memory (either natural or cybernetically enhanced) to keep track of his research. His assistants are not permitted to enter his lab for any reason.

Online presence
Mxali frequents the Furnet and Anthrochat (usernames: Mxali, Biohazard, Camus) networks. On the latter, he serves as an operator for the #nocturnalyiff channel. He also helps maintain the SOAP website, where he accounts for most of the spam volume over the SOAP mailing list, mostly attempting to find someone on the list to eat lunch with him.

Abando
Abando is the first furry convention to be held annually in Brazil. It was founded in 2008, and occurs during the Brazilian Carnival.

Background
The idea for Abando developed during a discussion on the Furry Brasil forum, when WToboe asked if any furry conventions existed in Brazil. Reyres and Ekevoo started to consider the possibility of organizing a convention. One year later, Reyres recruited the first team of six volunteers.

Abando promotes itself as a healthy place to camp, similar to Camp Feral!, with outdoor activities such as body painting, Frisbee, foam bat battles, water-balloon rugby, and other games involving water. Programming has also included drawing classes, video games, a pizza factory, and bingo. The farm on which Abando is located is peaceful, and features a natural lake. Attendees enjoy nature and getting away from the busy city.

Convention dates and attendance
* Abando 2011 was held 5-8 March 2011, and had 55 attendees.
* Abando 2010 was held 13-16 February 2010, and had 37 attendees.
* Abando 2009 was held 21-24 February 2009 and had 22 attendees.
* Abando 2008 was first held 2-5 February 2008 and had 15 attendees.

Location
Through 2011, the event was held at Sitio Maio, a large farm located in São Roque, a city in the countryside near São Paulo, Brazil. The farm has sufficient infrastructure to support at least 150 attendees, if they use tents.

With the growth of Abando, in 2012 the convention will be moving to Intervales National Park, a nature preserve. The new location is still in in the same state, but is 260 kilometers from São Paulo. The new location has natural cascades, caves, and animals. This new location has housing, a restaurant and bathing facilities, negating the need for camping.

Leadership
Abando has three main organizers and a growing staff.
*Aniki Geelong - overall leader (2012, Activities from 2009)
*Toboe - Infrastructure (2008-Present)

The Yiff Factory, also known as TYF, is a furry night club in Second Life (SL).

Services
The night club caters to all furries, regardless of their sexual orientation. The club also plays music, holds special events, and serves as an information hub to learn about the SL community.

History
The club was created by Felix Oxide in October 2007.

In early 2009, Felix Oxide sold the club to Teeny Littlething.

On June 15th 2009, The Yiff Factory was set to only allow Age Verified residents, which blocked many of the club's patrons from visiting again until their real age had been verified. This requirement was lifted shortly later.

On October 31st, 2009, The Yiff Factory was closed by Teeny Littlething, only to be reopened three days later in its original form, which had been designed by Felix Oxide. A message found within the club states that it was being run by old management. Staff from other clubs came in to help with the reopening.

A month later, The Yiff Factory closed its doors due to the owner's failing health.

Less than a year later, The Yiff Factory was re-established by Teeny Littlething, along with many old staff members. The club has upgraded its look in a tribute to the original design.

Animalympics

2005-08-29T11:17:28Z

Atara: +cat and some cleanup

Animalympics is an animated television special that was created by Steve Lisberger (creator of the film Tron) for the 1980 Olympic Games. The show had two parts: the Winter Games, a half-hour special (22 minutes) which was aired in early 1980, and the Summer Games, an hour special (44 minutes) which was to be aired in the summer of 1980, but was never shown due to the US boycott of the Summer Olympic Games. The two shows were then edited together, with some filler scenes removed, into a 90 minute feature that was shown on pay TV channels and eventually released on VHS. It was never released on DVD, and has been out of production for many years.

Animalympics is the story of the animal version of the Olympic Games. Anthropomorphic animals of many diverse species came to compete in winter and summer game events, representing the continents of their origin. Many now-famous animators and voice talents contributed to the project. The style of the character design and art production was something short of Disney, but much better then typical Saturday Morning fare. The story revolved around the coverage of the games by the ZOO network, an obvious parody of the "close up and personal" style coverage of sporting events by TV networks. Many well-known celebrities voices were spoofed by the voice actors, including Howard Cosel and Barbara Walters. The show was aimed at a broad audience, with much of the humor flying over the heads of kids. The great soundtrack, including some original vocal numbers, was created by Grahm Gould, of the pop group 10cc.

Animalympics was screened at the first Furry party, in 1985 (before the word Furry had come into common usage). The special version that was shown included a very rare complete copy of the Winter Games and a carefully edited version of the feature, returned to the original Summer Games format. This "special edition" was created by members the C/FO animation fan club, and was screened at Science Fiction conventions and Furry parties all over the world. The show's dry humor, clever story and attractive characters made Animalympics one of the most popular "exclusive" films of Furry Fandom. The show, thanks to the enthusiasm of the fans who had seen the show so many time that most could repeat the dialog entirely from memory (and often do), has been called "The Rocky Horror of Furry Fandom".

Rowrbrazzle

Atara: +cat

Rowrbrazzle is an amateur press association (APA) magazine devoted to funny animal cartoon illustration, that for a long time was a bulwark for furry fandom. The word is a misspelling of "rowrbazzle!", an exclamation used at times by the characters in Walt Kelly's comic-strip "Pogo".

Rowrbrazzle was started by Marc Schirmeister around 1983. Fred Patten then took over five years later, and served as the official editor for 12 years. Each of the most recent issues have been edited by interim editors.

The first issue was distributed to the association membership in February 1984, it is still published as of July 2005 (with over 86 quarterly issues so far), and it is continuing its uninterrupted 20 year run.

Southern Manitoba Organization of Furs

2005-08-21T16:20:18Z

Atara: Expanded on location a bit.

Southern Manitoba Organization of Furs is a casual group of furry fans and friends based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (The acronym SMOF is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the science fiction acronym "Secret Masters of Fandom.")

The group meets almost every Saturday for a Coffee Meet in the Exchange District coffeshop Mondragon. (The Mondragon serves up vegan food and socialist/anti-establishment propaganda; please keep this in mind if you plan to attend and would be offended by these traits. However, all of the carnivores in the group agree that the "cheese"cake (actually a tofu concoction) is divine.)

If you attend, you can expect anywhere from three to fifteen other furs showing up on any given week. The group also sponsors (on an irregular basis) outings for camping, dinner, or park trips. Among the regular attendees are writers, artists, fursuiters, gamers and average fans.

Cat Soup

2005-08-21T16:03:36Z

Atara: Fixed spelling, added proto-links.

Cat Soup (also known as "Nekojiru-so" [ねこぢる草]) is a film adapted from the works of the late manga artist Nekojiru. The film was released in Japan in 2001, then came in the US (through a DVD only release) on October 9th, 2003.

The film was directed by Tatsuo Sato (who also directed, "Nadesico: Prince of Darkness").

Plot
The main character, a cat named Nyatta, embarks upon a journey to save his sister's soul, which was ripped in two when Nyatta tried to save her from Death. She trails after him, brain-dead. They encounter many brilliant, mind-bending situations, beginning with a disturbing magic show.

Axel Wolf

Atara: Fixed dead-end page.

A lion-turned wolf fur from Cincinnati, Ohio. His real name is Matt Thomsson. Joined the fandom back in 2002, he has become a person with a painfull past throughout LiveJournal.com under the name earthlion. Thought himself as one of the last furs in Cincinnati, pointing out that majority of furs that lived in Ohio were in the Dayton and Columbus regions and furs were moving away from Cincinnati due to the strong anti-gay pressence in the city and the surrounding areas over the years. He is currently on planning to move to New York City before the year is over.

Panther

2005-08-21T14:13:49Z

Atara: Corrected spelling, fixed dead-end page.

Panther or black panther is used as a generic species name to describe a melanistic leopard or jaguar. Such individuals are an example of a mutation, not a separate species. Their spots can be seen in the right light, but essentially panthers look entirely black (or, at least, very dark brown or grey).

Occasionally, panther is used to refer to the cougar or mountain lion. In this case, there is no melanistic phase.

Fur

2005-08-21T14:03:59Z

Atara: Expanded on the definition a bit.

The term fur refers to the body hair of non-human mammals also known as the pelage (like the term plumage in birds).

In the furry fandom, the term "fur" can be used in several different ways. It can refer to a member of the fandom (i.e., "I'm meeting some furs for dinner."). It can allude to a furry character in a story or movie (i.e., "Plonq often has disagreements with the other furs in his office."). The term can also be used to describe a person's fursona (i.e., "Brightwings likes hanging out with other furs.").

Ironclaw

2005-08-19T10:27:59Z

Atara: Added category.

Founded on a d12 system, Ironclaw is an RPG by Sanguine created with furries in mind. There are a total of 12 initial species, although players are encouraged to create their own.

During the character creation process, the players are given 20 points with which to develop their avatar. Species and Career are the first attriubutes selected. 10 points may be spent on 'Gifts', or special abilities or characteristics of that player. The creator is then encouraged to inbue their character with 'Flaws', which add more depth to their character (the players are asked to roleplay any flaws they give their furry). Beginning players may select up to 10 points worth of flaws (it is recommended to have at least a few, since taking on flaws will earn back more creation points to by Skills with). Finally, each character may browse through the rules and selcect any array of Skills that they deem worthwhile or necessary.

The basic premise of Ironclaw is one of caste struggle and claim over the island of Calabria. There are three noble houses
<ul>
<li>Avordupois: (details unknown to this author)
<li>Bisclavret: (see above)
<li>Triskellian: (see the one above the 'see above')
</ul>
although many subdivisions do occur.

Set in a european mideval fantasy theme, players can select to become anything from mercenary swordfurs to wizards to scoundrals and everything in between.
The system of magic in Ironclaw is a bit slow and complicated, often causing frustration for novice spellcasters. In order to learn a spell, the character must usually find someone to teach them. After that, they are able to attempt to cast the spell, but their lack of experience casting it will sometimes result in a wasted effort or worse. There are four basic schools of magic:
<ul>
<li>Elemental: specializing in the use of the four natural elements, these wizards can be likened to summoners. They are capable of controlling the elements and conjuring the ruling spirits of said element.
<li>Green and Purple Magic: similiar to illusionists, these wizards are capable of controlling dreams and emotions. Very weak at first, they are a force to be reckoned with at higher levels.
<li>White Magic: generally used for healing and defense. Usually, the wizard must be a member of the S'Allumer parish to gain access to these spells.
<li>Thaumaturgy: understanding the inner workings of magic, these wizards are capable of a wide array of long distance and support spells. Considerably the most useful mages outside of battle.
</ul>

Players may devise their own Careers, Gifts, Flaws, Skills, and/or schools of magic if they so wish.

Greymuzzle

2005-08-19T02:14:07Z

Atara: Fixed spelling error.

A Greymuzzle is a older furry fan. It's generally meant as a term of respect, rather than an insult. Depending on the persons one asks, a greymuzzle may be:
*Any person involved in the fandom pre-1991
*Any fan who is over a certain age (40, 45, 50)
*Any person who has been in the fandom for a certain length of time (5, 10, 15 years)

Originally, greymuzzles meant pre-internet furries, but there are a growing number of decade-long FurryMuck or alt.fan.furry users who would easily qualify as greymuzzles in most minds. In some related fandom groups, a greymuzzle may only have been involved for a few years, depending how young they are. Generally, a greymuzzle is a long term fan who is also over the age of 35.

Southern Manitoba Organization of Furs

2005-08-19T01:52:25Z

Atara:

Southern Manitoba Organization of Furs is a casual group of furry fans and friends based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (The acronym SMOF is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the science fiction acronym "Secret Masters of Fandom.")

The group meets almost every Saturday in the Exchange District coffeshop Mondragon. If you attend, you can expect anywhere from three to fifteen other furs showing up on any given week. The group also sponsors (on an irregular basis) outings for camping, dinner, or park trips. Among the regular attendees are writers, artists, fursuiters, gamers and average fans.
