Altivo: +Weasyl +Clydesdale Librarian

[[File:Newtivo200.jpg|right|frame|'Tivo as drawn by his player]]'''Altivo Overo''' (or '''Tivo''') is an equine character who first appeared in the spring of 2002 on [[Wild Spirits MUSH]]. The name is a fairly common Spanish name for a stallion, and translates roughly as "elevated" or "high spirited" though it may also be interpreted as "proud" or "haughty".

The character appeared first as a black and white [[Wikipedia:Overo|overo paint]], of [[Wikipedia:Barb_%28horse%29|Spanish Barb]] ancestry and therefore small in stature, and a recent runaway from some ranch near the Mexican border. He soon came to be called 'Tivo, and eventually assumed leadership of the Shadow Lands territory and a relatively small herd that was based there. He was noted for his resistance to violence and his active support for the work of healers and shamans. His history on Wild Spirits MUSH is being related in the player's [http://altivo.livejournal.com/98753.html blog]. An image of the original Wild Spirits character by artist [[Jazmyn Concolor]] [http://us-p.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Jazmyn-Concolor/altivo.jpg can be viewed here].

Also the [[personal furry]] of his player, '''Gary Lee Phillips''' of [[Wikipedia:Union, Illinois|Union]], [[Wikipedia:Illinois|Illinois]], 'Tivo has appeared in several other settings as a bipedal or sometimes quad [[Wikipedia:Clydesdale (breed)|Clydesdale horse]], chestnut colored with sabino splotches and long black mane and tail. He can be found online at [[FurryMUCK]] and [[Tapestries MUCK]] where he uses the character name "Tivo".

Under the pseudonym of Altivo Overo, he has published fiction in various furry publications and on the web.

Altivo: Comment and suggestion

I hesitate to make picky corrections to a newly-posted page, in case you're still working on it. Watch out for slips that will escape a spelling checker though. "Form" for "from" appears here a couple of times, for instance. Love the artwork, especially the warpaint stripes on your muzzle. Oracle or is it really shaman? You look native American there. :D

Altivo: Correct links

{{ContributorU|Altivo}}
'''Altivo''', or more frequently just 'Tivo, is the [[fursona]] of Gary Lee Phillips, a writer and professional librarian who lives in rural Illinois. His wiki interests are largely related to role-playing and equine characters, and more information can be found in [http://altivo.dreamwidth.org/ his Dreamwidth pages]. He also produced a series of podcasts called [http://www.ourmedia.org/user/45968 Altivo's Fabulous Furry Tales], on the topic of furry themes in literature and writes furry stories.

'''Orvan Ox''' is a delivery [[Wikipedia:ox|ox]] who works for ACME Corporation. He is often seen at conventions, clipboard in hand conducting deliveries of fun and enjoyable ACME products. Orvan may also be seen with a bucket of candy, ready to help anyone's sweet tooth.

Altivo: /* Controversy? */

We should probably follow some kind of standard for the individual character pages, with the last two sections optional. Perhaps something like this:

== Character Description ==
<How the character appeared in Wild Spirits MUSH>

== +finger Information & Backstory ==
<The character's +finger information and backstory prior to appearing on Wild Spirits MUSH, if he/she had one>

== Roleplayed Story ==
<A synopsis of what the character did on the MUSH>

== Alts ==
<If the player so chooses, a list of characters they played on the MUSH>

== Off-MUSH Appearances ==
<Mention of other places the character appeared on ... other MU*s, stories, etc.>

Also, unfortunately it appears I no longer have any of my logfiles from the MUSH (must have been lost in a drive failure), so hopefully some kind soul who played on the MUSH saved descriptions and +finger information of characters in their logfiles.

== Discussion of this suggestion ==
Very thorough. I certainly agree that much of this is valuable if available, but I'm not so sure about the rather imposing format. :) Because many of the characters have other lives, we cannot impose a "Wild Spirits" format on any article about them. --[[User:Altivo|Altivo]] 12:33, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

:I've made several revisions to several characters's listings. Notably, Heart Seer's herd (I don't recall if it had a name, might be appropriate to call it the Shadow Lands herd at the time) co-resided with the mare herd which was named Wild Sisters, but the two herds stayed in seperate areas of the Shadowlands (and Heart Seer intruding on the mare herd's portion resulted in scathing complaints from Ironhoof, though she did not lead the Wild Sisters herd at the time). Angstily, Tempest left the Wild Sisters herd (where she was lead until that point) to join Heart Seer's herd.

:HawkWings was Tornado's lead mare, and Jewel took over when HawkWings left abruptly to join the Wild Sisters herd. HawkWings' departure was why Tornado banded together with IceHeart and Domino to punish Ironhoof for 'stealing' his lead mare on '''The Night That Never Happened'''.

:Also, Tehawa was in the Wild Sisters herd. I do not know what became of her character afterward.

:I've modified several characters' listings accordingly to place them in the Wild Sisters herd.

Ocelots are a South American/Amazon species...can we verify they were on a North American MUCK? Especially since the area seemed to be in the western plains and similar surroundings...an ocelot would have a lot of traveling to do, not to mention being out of their element there. o.O [[User:SpazKitty|Spaz Kitty]]
<br>Yup, they were indeed there. The list of possible species was controlled by the MUSH admin, and ocelot was on the list. Two subspecies are known in North America: L. p. albescens, found in Texas and Mexico; and L. p. sonoriensis, found in the Sonora Desert of Arizona and Mexico. The territory assigned as home to the ocelot characters did in fact resemble Arizona or Utah desert. [[User:Altivo|Altivo]]

== Controversy? ==
I've heard from a couple of fellow RPers that there's a very negative association with Puma, the headwizard - but I don't know any details. Can anyone scrounge up LJ posts or anything to add such a note to the article? [[User:24.99.238.8|24.99.238.8]] 21:53, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

There are all sorts of materials from both sides on that. In the end, it comes down to a battle of personalities and styles that got way out of hand. In presenting this article, I tried to minimize that because I'm not about to take a side with either faction, nor do I want the presentation of the MUSH history itself, that which was played out, to be distorted by the behind the scenes squabbles of which there were far too many. --[[User:Altivo|Altivo]] 00:22, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

== Image:Pegasus2.gif ==

Hello Altivo,

This is in regards to ''[[:Image:Pegasus2.gif]]''. It has not been tagged with a copyright status. This can be a complicated area, so I can try to help if you need any. The Wikipedia [[Wikipedia:WP:IUP|Image use policy]] may give some background, but it isn't policy here.

To deal with this image, there are a few choices:

* If you are the copyright holder, release it under a free license, for example:
** [[Wikipedia:Public domain|Public domain]] <nowiki>{{PDImage}}</nowiki>
** [[Wikipedia:Creative Commons|Creative Commons]] Attribution-ShareAlike <nowiki>{{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}</nowiki>
** [[Wikipedia:GFDL|GFDL]] <nowiki>{{GFDL}}</nowiki>
* If you are asserting that this image is usable under fair use, add an appropriate fair use tag. A very basic summary is that fair use is used for commentary, criticism and review on the image when no free image could be used instead. Some fair use tags are:
** Logos: <nowiki>{{logo}}</nowiki>
** Covers: <nowiki>{{Cover}}</nowiki>
** Comic panels: <nowiki>{{Comic-panel}}</nowiki>
* If the image is already under a free license, provide information on the license, and tag the image if you can.
* If you would like the image to be deleted, ask any [[WikiFur:Administrators|administrator]]

To see a list of current copyright tags available on WikiFur, see [[:Category:Image copyright tags]]
If the copyright status is not resolved, the image may be deleted.

Unless you have a question for me specifically, I'd prefer responses on the page for the image. --[[User:Rat|Rat]] 08:48, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

:Sorry, but this sort of legalism is beyond my understanding. The image was taken from a "copyright free" clip art collection. It appears in a number of these collections, none identify the source. You can find it online here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/clipart/results.aspx?qu=pegasus&sc=21 as the first image that appears. I have no idea how you want me to "attribute" this. --[[User:Altivo|Altivo]] 12:21, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

::Well, telling us that it was taken from a "copyright free" clip art collection is a good start. We didn't automatically know that just from the current description of "Simple clip art representation of flying horse." For all we knew, the clip art was "royalty free", but only usable by the people who bought a particular office package. The point of it all is that at some day we may really have a need to know exactly what its status is (consider what would happen if we tried to publish WikiFur in printed form), and certainly others wishing to use our content will want to know this as well. It's not just being picky. :-) --[[User:GreenReaper|GreenReaper]]([[User talk:GreenReaper|talk]]) 12:28, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
:::I don't think it's compatible with our license. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/tou.aspx states(emphasis mine):
::::Media Elements and Templates. You may have access to media images, clip art, animations, sounds, music, shapes, video clips, and templates associated with the service. If so, you may copy and use these images, clip art, animations, sounds, music, shapes, video clips, and templates identified for such use in documents and projects that you create. You may distribute those documents and projects '''non-commercially'''. If you wish to use these media elements or templates for any other purpose, go to www.microsoft.com/permission to learn whether that use is allowed.
:::While http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Image_copyright_tags states that Non-Commercial licenses aren't allowed. --[[User:Rat|Rat]] 12:41, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
:::I'm a writer, not a lawyer. Do what you wish. I'm sorry, but I have no patience with nor interest in this sort of thing.--[[User:Altivo|Altivo]] 16:53, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm confused by the addition of this copyright warning. I am the author of the altivo article, I am the artist who drew the image, I am the one who uploaded it to go with the article. Doesn't that amount to implicit permission for the image to appear? It's not a matter of "fair use" nor are there any issues with copyright involved. It is my own work entirely, and I should be able to do with it as I choose. --[[User:Altivo|Altivo]] 04:49, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Ocelot (species)

2006-06-14T22:23:07Z

Altivo: Added range details to clarify for commenters elsewhere.

The '''Ocelot''' is a spotted small [[feline]] primarily native to South America in historic times, but with a range extending as far north as the plains and deserts of Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. The North American subspecies have become scarce largely due to habitat reduction, and are now listed as endangered. The Texas native ocelot, ''Leopardus pardalis albescens'', is now estimated to have a population of about 120, but was much more numerous when white settlers first reached the area.

Wild Spirits MUSH

2006-06-14T20:46:35Z

Altivo: Fix misspelled link

'''Wild Spirits MUSH''' was a [[role-playing]] [[MUSH]] with the theme of North American wildlife; no [[human]] characters were allowed. It was inspired by the movie ''[[wikipedia:Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron|Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron]]'', although not based on it, and did not include feature characters. [[wikipedia:Mary Stanton|Mary Stanton's]] novels ''The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West'' and ''Piper at the Gate'' were also an influence. The MUSH closed in the fall of 2004 due to a lack of active players.

* Wild Sisters
:An all-mare herd led first by [[Tempest]], then by [[Ironhoof]], that co-resided in the Shadow Lands with Heart Seer's herd.

The '''Comic of the Week''' is a way to feature the large number of high-quality [[:Category:Comics|comics]] that are popular amoung members of the [[furry fandom]] - and perhaps a few that aren't yet as popular as they deserve to be, too. == Nominate a comic ==

Please nominate up to three comics below (preface with *). Comics must have an existing article - if you want to feature a comic without an article, write the article first, then nominate it. Note that both general audience and [[:Category:Mature comics|mature]] nominations are welcome.

Others may support a nomination with indented comments (preface with :, and sign your name with --{{UT|GreenReaper}}). Support is not the only (or even primary factor) for featuring - the justification given for featuring in the nomination will weigh heavily, as will availablility of a high quality panel or title image representing the comic in the article, and of course the article itself.

The '''Comic of the Week''' is a way to feature the large number of high-quality [[:Category:Comics|comics]] that are popular amoung members of the [[furry fandom]] - and perhaps a few that aren't yet as popular as they deserve to be, too. '''You''' can take part by [[#Nominate a comic|nominating a comic]] for featuring.

* [[WikiFur:Comic of the Week/Week 51, 2005|Week 51]]: ''[[Ozy and Millie]]''

== Nominate a comic ==

'''Incondor''' is a male [[pegasus|Pegasus]] character on [[Tapestries_MUCK|Tapestries MUCK]] who lives in Equinoire and also serves as a prison guard in the Katatraz complex, having charge of cell block H. Reportedly not a very nice person in his Katatraz role, but quite amiable when found off-duty in Equinoire.

Pegasus

2005-11-25T13:20:56Z

Altivo:

'''[[Wikipedia:Pegasus|Pegasus]]''' is a winged horse, the offspring of the god [[Wikipedia:Poseidon|Poseidon]] and the gorgon [[Wikipedia:Medusa|Medusa]]. According to the classical legend, he either burst forth from the neck of Medusa when [[Wikipedia:Perseus|Perseus]] beheaded her, or sprang from her blood when it fell into the water of the sea. Although his name is a proper noun and technically refers to the one and only original, Pegasus has come to be used as a generic for any winged horse.

[[Image:pegasus2.gif|right|frame|Simple representation of Pegasus]]The goddess [[Wikipedia:Athena|Athena]] is credited for taming Pegasus and presenting him to [[Wikipedia:Muse|the Muses]], with whose temples and worship he is often associated. He was later ridden by [[Wikipedia:Bellerophon|Bellerophon]] in a number of quests and adventures, culminating in an attempt to fly to the peak of Mount Olympus. Zeus was angered by the hubris of this quest, and sent a gadfly to sting Pegasus and cause him to buck his rider off. Falling back to earth, Bellerophon was forever separated from his beloved mount, and spent the rest of his days wandering the earth in search of Pegasus. Because his father was a god, Pegasus has the status of demigod, and ultimately was transformed into a constellation located in the sky between his first rider, Perseus, and [[Wikipedia:Andromeda_(mythology)|Andromeda]], whom he helped to rescue.

Pegasus is not the only winged horse in classical myth. ''Arion'' (or ''Aerion'') is the son of Poseidon and Demeter, begotten while both gods were in equine form. Because both his parents are immortals, Arion is immortal and has the power of speech, as well as being depicted with wings in artistic representations. Ridden by [[Wikipedia:Adrastus|Adrastus]] in the civil war of the Seven against Thebes, Arion helped to insure that his rider survived the battle when the other rebels were destroyed.

Pegasus himself took a mate, ''Euippe'', and begot at least two offspring: ''Celeris'', a white stallion, and ''Melanippe'', a black mare. Presumably, all flying horses are descended from the lineage of Pegasus or Arion.

Some have pointed out that, more properly, winged horses should be called ''hippopteroi'', or simply ''flying horses''. Winged horses are a symbol of both strength and freedom, and figure large in fantasy worlds and dreams, so it is no wonder that they are encountered now and then as [[role-playing]] [[character]]s or [[fursona]]s.

In art, it is worthy of note that while an actual flying horse might be physically possible, it would require considerably more wingspan than is usually depicted. Most likely such a creature would have the lighter, hollow bones typical of avians, and the slight build of an Arabian or similar light breed. While Pegasus and his get have been frequently depicted in art through the centuries, the wings are rarely shown in suitable proportion.
