The sexuality is hardly minor. -- 24.0.213.70
: Come on -- there's not a single nipple displayed :( -- Wesha.
: True. It's not "sexually explicit", as the genitals and breasts aren't really shown, but the sexuality in the comic is huge. There are entire chapters based on this, like "Tough Love". Sexual abuse, rape, affairs, strippers, even incest. But the term "it is not sexually explicit" might be misleading to some people, making them believe the comic doesn't even TALK about sex. When Jay initially created Better Days, Lucy and Fisk were supposed to be the same characters as those in Badly Drawn Kitties. Jay later had a falling out with Mat Sherer, and if I remember correctly, he eventually declared the characters of his strip to be separate and unrelated to the identically-named characters from BDK. Maybe a Controvery section should be added to this entry (and/or BDK) to give more specifics. mwalimu 17:29, 6 Sep 2005 (UTC)
:Debatable. It's a furry topic, so it should probably be mentioned here, at least. I don't know how popular it is, but if it's not got a significant fanbase, it's possible it might be deleted over there, in which case the whole article could justifiably be moved over here. == General timeline trivia? ==

You can tell I have too much time on my hands lately. Reason being that I had enough spare time to research the visual clues in the comic and extrapolated a timeline from that. The general explination is below.

* The characters are first seen as nine year old kittens at the start of the comic, this isn't hard to miss.
* A school teacher says it "isn't 1950 anymore". inconsequential to the majority of the timeline except to prove it doesn't take place before 1970.
* Vietnam is mentioned at least five times in relation to a pivotal character that is deceased yet still plays a big part in Fisk's life.
* The song "Into the Groove" is used in one arc and that same song has a release date of around 1985. Both Fisk and Lucy are roughly 13 or 14 in that arc and starting high school as freshmen at that time.
* "The Wall" is visibly seen and they have or are very close to graduating high school which places the two main characters at about 17 or 18 years old.

The above, when I think about it, means they were born sometime in or near 1972. The comic strip's visual history started in 1981 or 1982, and that when they graduate high school (Lucy goes to college and Fisk to the Army) it is either 1990 or 1991.

Think any of that could make a good trivia section for the article? ----Markus(talk) 20:10, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

:Sure, I think that this would absolutely make a good addition to a trivia section. It might even be interesting to bounce this off of Jay and get his comments on it, if he's willing.----DuncanDaHusky(talk) 11:54, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
::I had a good bit of time on my hands to review the entire archive for this. I left a comment on the artist's LJ to confirm if any of what I added is accurate or if it needs changing. I am not optomistic however that I will get a responce since he is a busy man after all. Greenreaper himself said the timeline and trivia made sense. Assuming this timeline is accurate then as GR said on AIM last night: "For story purposes, there is no real point having the main character not be on the front line." It gives rise to many opprotunities for mishaps to occur, minor or major of all kinds as well as probably bringing up new love interests for both Fisk and Lucy. ----Markus(talk) 01:22, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
:::I can hope, but I won't hold my breath. I know what it is like in a vague sense to be so busy. It would take time off your production schedual to answer every little comment posted or emailed to you. And given that I posted a comment on a two month old post.. It might take longer. I have my own comic to write for myself now. So I can write more for it as I wait.
::::With the latest chapter (17), it appears that the year is 1989 (the Berlin Wall is falling), so the years need to be tweaked slightly. As it stands in the article, the twins graduate from high school in 1989 - it would seem they graduate a year or so earlier than that. 24.99.238.8 01:32, 25 November 2006 (UTC) (SpazKitty unlogged in)
:::::We should let it play out a bit. I suspect it may actually be 1990. Fisk is suggesting remaining in the Army, and it may be Desert Shield that convinces him to stay. So let's let the chapter play out a bit before making any changes. --Kitch 18:58, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Outside story arcs
Should True Love be listed among the outside story arcs? Persia's appeared a couple of times in the comic, so she's part of the setting, at least. Or should we wait to see if the comic catches up with some of the bits of Persia's backstory mentioned in the folio? I'm thinking it should go ahead and go on the list, but I wanted to run it by folks here first.--MythicFox 20:47, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
:Well, looks like the backstory for Persia mentioned in True Love is about to become relevant in the storyline as of Chapter 23. I'll look at putting True Love back on the list of Outside Story Arcs when I've got time to write it up (unless someone else wants to do it, or if there's an archived copy somewhere that can just be replaced).--MythicFox 00:18, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Chapter 21: "Father's Footsteps"
I'm pretty sure it's not a CIA job he was offered. The dialogue makes it very clear they no longer have government funding, approval, or oversight. Last time I checked, running black ops under those conditions counts as terrorism. The chapter summery should be changed to reflect this, or to point out the ambiguity. Objections?ANTIcarrot 13:44, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

:Restored his criminal status. Anyone questioning this is welcome to read up on US law or international law. == chapter 1: unsure of wording ==

Currently part of article reads: “Chapter 1: "Honest Girls" - Fisk has his sister Lucy deliver a love note to a popular girl, who turns him down after reading it aloud to her friends.” I think that bit should be rephrased, but I am not sure of what wording should be. I looked at Chapter 1, page 6 and it looks like another girl is reading the letter (the popular girl might be the girl on the right-side of that panel). --EarthFurst 11:55, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Timeline Issue
Because of the new strip showing Elizabeth sending a text message to Fisk, I've decided to update the timeline, given that flip clamshell phones became comercially available in the United States in 2004. 69.123.219.33
:Unless there are other factors present to suggest the strip has jumped ahead ten years, I'd rather chalk it up to being a goof on Jay's part. It will be interesting to see if others point it out and he changes it. --mwalimu 06:18, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
::Perhaps since text messaging became commercially available in the 90's and the very first early flip phones appeared in 1996, we could put this strip somewhere around there. Also, in the beginning of the chapter, Jessica is back after what has to be at least a few months to a year of maternity leave. Better Days is a comedy/drama comic written by Jay Naylor. The strip began on April 18, 2003 and continues through the present. It is updated twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays.

Better Days is about Fisk and Lucy Black, two fraternal twin siblings growing up in the U.S. state of Georgia, and their mother, Sheila. All of the Blacks are cats. The comic is divided up into "chapters" (story arcs) of varying length, each one portraying a significant and sometimes difficult episode in the life of the Blacks. Fisk and Lucy are also seen in Badly Drawn Kitties by Mat Sherer.

The comic is known for its conservative outlook, as well as for featuring controversial and sensitive issues such as incest, the Vietnam war, racial issues (Naylor loosely equates species with races in a manner similar to Art Spiegelman's - European whites are felines and canines, Semitic people are represented as mice, African-Americans as hyenas, etc.), rape, and sexual abuse. There is profanity and some violence, but although the comic is highly suggestive, it is not sexually (visually) explicit, like much of Naylor's art.
Chapter Summaries
spoiler

* Chapter 1: "Honest Girls" - Fisk has his sister Lucy deliver a love note to a popular girl, who turns him down after reading it aloud to her friends.
* Chapter 2: "How to Impress" - While Fisk attempts to impress Jenny's parents, Lucy refers him to a Bible verse where David presented foreskins to King Saul in order to marry his daughter.
* Chapter 3: "My Sister's Keeper" - While taking care of his sick sister, Fisk accidentally gives Lucy the wrong medicine, resulting in a family emergency with Lucy's life in the balance and Fisk's guilt issues overwhelming him.
* Chapter 4: "The Bedbutter Chronicles" - An example of one of Naylor's more political arcs, Fisk's mouth gets him in trouble with his Democratic teacher. When Sheila comes in for a parent-teacher conference, she and Mrs. Bedbutter get into a heated argument dealing with feminist issues.
* Chapter 5: "Predators" - Sheila goes on a date with Principal Longfellow, whom she met in the last chapter. He lies about having known Sheila's deceased husband during the war, and when she confronts him about it, he rapes her. Fisk catches him, and knocks him unconscious with a baseball bat. Longfellow dies under suspicious circumstances while undergoing reconstructive surgery (it is hinted that Sheila's dead husband's CO, the friend that alerted her to the lie, is involved in Longfellow's death).
* Chapter 6: "Tough Love" - An 11-year-old female hyena named Nikki shows her interest in 10-year-old Fisk; the two end up having sex. The FBI discovers that the hyena's father is wanted for murder and rape, and it's implied that he sexually abuses his children, a reason why the girl insisted on sex with Fisk.

* Chapter 7: "Of Mice and Idiots" - A new year at school, and most of the girls have hit puberty - except for Elizabeth, whom Fisk asks out after Lucy blackmails him.
* Chapter 8: "Chess" - Fisk has a discussion about war and human nature over a game of chess with a family friend.
* Chapter 9: "Lucy's Mom" - Ted, a football player at school, asks Lucy out in order to get closer to her mom.
* Chapter 10: "Brother's Arms" - When Lucy finds out the truth behind Ted dating her, she's an emotional wreck. When Fisk comforts her, things take a turn for the intimate. This marks the beginning of Lucy and Fisk's incestuous relationship; it is implied that this the relationship continues on and off until Lucy leaves for college and Fisk leaves for the Army.
* Chapter 11: "Armed and Amorous" - Ready to date again but concerned about safety after the Longfellow incident, Sheila seeks self-defense training from Sam Tobs, a next-door neighbor in a cold marriage. They end up becoming intimate, only giving fodder to the private investigator Tobs' jealous wife hired.
* Chapter 12: "Exemplary Girls" - It's time for the Halloween Dance, and Fisk is hooked up with a cheerleader's sister who turns out to be the polar opposite of her sibling - a Wiccan lesbian. Womanizer Randy asks Lucy to the dance, which turns into nothing short of a drama fest. Lucy also becomes worried she may have caught something when she discovers Randy didn't use a condom while having sex with her after the dance.
* Chapter 13: "Thicker Than Water" - The Black family visits relatives when they hear their grandfather is dying. Fisk decides to join the army.
* Chapter 14: "All the Wrong Places" - Lucy seeks out relationship advice from her roommates while getting used to life at the University of Georgia. She ends up fooling around with Tommy, the boyfriend of one of her roommates, Rachel, who has been unsuspectingly cheated on for years. Fisk visits Lucy after finishing basic training at Fort Benning.
* Chapter 15: "Reconciliation" - While in training, Fisk injures himself, and his nurse turns out to be Nikki, the same hyena from his childhood.
* Chapter 16: "Lucy Black" - Lucy has to deal with office politics during her internship at CNN. Tommy has to deal with his Catholic parents in the aftermath of his breakup with Rachel and his new relationship with Lucy.
* Chapter 17: "Trial By Fire" - When Fisk's about to finish his service in the army, The Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) begins, and he's dragged into the fight.
* Chapter 18: "Reacquainted" - The Gulf War is winding down. Fisk talks to friends about what they'll do when their service terms are over.
* Chapter 19: "Party Girls" - Robert proposes to Jessica, and the Bachelor/Bachelorette parties are planned. However, this leads to trouble over strippers being booked for both.
* Chapter 20: "The Art of Living" - Fisk's lover, Beth, goes to New York to display her artwork at a gallery, and starts to believe Fisk may be the one for her.
* Chapter 21: "Father's Footsteps" - Fisk learns that his late father had an undercover CIA job, and that when his father died, the agency went rogue. It is subsequently shown that they endorse bombs, murder, obstruction of US justice, and compromise of US government intelligence assets. The group bears some similarities to "The Campus" from Tom Clancy's Teeth of the Tiger. In both cases, the organizations operate without government oversight or authorization, and fronts as financial trading firms .
* Chapter 22: "Roll Play" Lucy gets talked into joining a Zombie Campaign in a D&D style RPG-game by Tommy along with three of his friends.
* Chapter 23: "Persia" Fisk tracks down his cousin Persia when she goes missing.
* Chapter 24: "Men And Women" Lucy stumbles across Aron and Beth having sex and finds herself being attacted to Aron.

Timeline/Trivia
The following is not to be considered serious or at all accurate. What follows is a collection of visual clues seen in the comic throughout its run so far and was assembled into a rough timeline.

* The main characters are first seen as nine year old kittens at the start of the comic. At the same time, the political button on Miss Bedbutter's shirt has the number 80 on it, further solidifying the time period of the arc being in 1980.
* The song "Into the Groove" is used in Chapter 9 and that same song was released in 1985 as the B-Side of the single "Angel" and was featured in the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" that same year. Both Fisk and Lucy are 14 in that arc and starting high school as freshmen at that time.
* "The Wall" is visibly seen and they have or are very close to graduating high school which places the two main characters at about 17 or 18 years old.

When taken into consideration, the following trivia can be assumed:

* Fisk and Lucy were born in 1971.
* The comic starts in 1980.
* They enter high school in 1985.
* They graduate from high school in 1989 (somewhere between chapters 13 and 14). Operation Desert Storm will begin two years from their graduation.
* Actual concrete evidence of the current date is seen in the last strip of Chapter 21. In it, Fisk receives plane tickets for a flight that arrives at it's destination on May 11th, 1993.

With research done, this could be the most accurate timeline (year, age of the Black twins):

* Chapter 1: Honest Girls - 1980, 9
* Chapter 2: How To Impress - 1980, 9
* Chapter 3: My Sister's Keeper - 1980, 9
* Chapter 4: The Bedbutter Chronicles - 1980, 9
* Chapter 5: Predator - 1980, 9
* Chapter 6: Tough Love - 1981, 10
* Chapter 7: Of Mice And Idiots - 1983, 12
* Chapter 8: Chess - 1984, 13
* Chapter 9: Lucy's Mother - 1985, 14
* Chapter 10: Brother's Arms - 1985, 14
* Chapter 11: Armed And Amorous - 1985-1986, 14-15
* Chapter 12: Exemplary Girls - 1987, 16
* Chapter 13: Thicker Than Water - 1988, 17
* Chapter 14: All The Wrong Places - 1989, 18
* Chapter 15: Reconciliation - 1989, 18
* Chapter 16: Lucy Black - 1990, 19
* Chapter 17: Trial By Fire - 1990-1991, 19-20
* Chapter 18: Reacquainted - 1991, 20
* Chapter 19: Party Girls - 1992, 21
* Chapter 20: The Art Of Living - 1992, 21
*Wicked Affairs - Set approximately in the present day. Elizabeth, having indeed married within her race as it was suggested she would have had to do in Chapter 7. In Part 1, she caught her husband cheating on her, and Lucy told her she should talk to Fisk about it. In Part 2, Elizabeth and Fisk do meet up, and Elizabeth reveals a desire to end her marriage and be with him instead. Jay Naylor has revealed that there will be at least one more part to the story in the future. Part of this story has been written into Chapter 24 "Men and Women".
*Beth's Night In - Beth, one of Lucy's roommates, deals with her sexual needs since she has no desire to enter another relationship (see Chapter 14 of Better Days to find out why).
*Rachel's Confessions - Rachel visits a church confessional booth to confess her lustful cheating ways.
*The Best Friend's Brother - Set during Chapter 14 of Better Days. Shows a connection being formed between Fisk and Beth.
*On The Rebound - Set during Chapter 14 of Better Days. Lucy teaches Tommy about sex after Tommy dumps Rachel.
*Amys Little Lamb Summer Camp Adventure - Lucy's college roommate Amy returns to her childhood summer camp and runs into an old friend. It is here that young love gives in to temptation.
*No Remorse - Set some time after her college days, Rachel is featured in an introspective look at the abusive degradation she inflicts on herself and her boyfriend (eventual husband), Alex.
*Puss 'n Boots - After her first fling with Fisk, Beth decides to start dating again. Her sister gives her a special gift which is sure to help.
*Breeding Bobbie - Set in the past, Sheila's sister Bobbie goes to adulterous lengths in order to become pregnant with Persia.
*Puppy Love - A story done in a poetic style showing how Robert and Jessica first met.

In addition to another section of Wicked Affairs, there will be more Better Days-based erotic comics put on sale in the future. Comics involving Lucy's other roommates, Amy and Jessica, have been suggested.

Lucy and her roommates can also be seen in Jay Naylor's "Undies!" portfolio.

Held in London for furs in the UK furry community known as the LondonFurs, the meets take place on every third Saturday and have been held with few interruptions since 1999.

There are also occasional coffee meets (usually on the Friday before a main meet), but these generally draw much smaller attendance.

LondonFur Meets are open to any furs (or, occasionally, non-furs) who wish to attend. Newcomers are advised to introduce themselves to the community via the UKFur Forums or the IRC channel, #UK.

Origins
The meets were originally started by Ia'Kat, and furs in the London area first started having organised meets during March and April of 1998.

Some of the first regular attendees, in no particular order: Scruff, Makali, Rubicon, Ahsha, BunbunMcCheffington, Draconis, VexenUK, Darkclaw, Hrrunka, Marcony, Fish, ANTIcarrot, Ruin, Footpad, Torne, Orinoco, and Ragtag.

History
* Established in April 1998, the meets were held once every 3 weeks.
* Following Ia'Kat's relocation to Sheffield, Makali took on responsibility for the meets.
* Nov 2003, Daktalis became organiser after Makali gave up his responsibility.
* July 2006 Daktalis retired from managing the LondonFurs handing over to Rapido.
* July 2006, the LondonFurs meet changed location to the Theodore Bullfrog pub near Charing Cross/Embankment.
* December 2007 the meet moved from the Theodore Bullfrog to the City Golf Bar in Blackfriars.
* May 2008, Spargue took responsibility for the LondonFur Meet.
* August 2008, Bariki, Branded_Bunni, Lupus_Londonwolf, Miles_TigerFox and Miyabi took up the running of the meets.
* The meet venue changed to The Saint in Paternoster Square, St. Pauls, London.

Locations
When the meets first became established as a regular tri-weekly event in 1999, meets didn't have a 'base' like they do today. Instead, the plan was to meet up at Kings Cross train station in London, below the departures board at 11am (some furs still meet there to this day) and go from there. This was an idea of Scruff's as Kings Cross was the station many people would arrive in London at, is easily found by those not familiar with the city, and is well-connected via the Underground to serve as a point of departure for wherever people decided to go during the day. Typically furs would congregate around Soho Square before going to the pubs The Ship or The Intrepid Fox.

From late 1999 until early October 2000, the meets were held in The Devonshire Arms, London's premier Goth pub, in Camden Town. The group was asked to leave as they had begun to outgrow the venue.

From late October 2000 until October 2003, the meets were held in the Jorene Celeste pub in Kentish Town. A change of management, followed by a steady decline in relations between the new management resulted in the group being asked to move on.

From October 2003 until 8th July 2006, The meets were held at 'Ye Olde London pub' (formerly 'The Bell, Book and Candle' until it was refurbished in mid 2005) which is close to St. Paul's Cathedral. Increasing attendance and a change of management left the LondonFurs unwelcome. A new location was soon found – This caused some sadness amongst the regulars as the 'Ye Olde London' had been a sentimental place of residence.

From 29th July 2006, the London FurMeets were held at the 'Theodore Bullfrog' pub in Charing Cross.

From the 15th December 2007 onwards, the Londonfur meets was relocated to the 'City Golf Bar' in the Blackfriars area of London. The meets remained here for some time.

The meets are currently held in The Saint Bar on Paternoster Square. Relations are good, and the London Fur meets finally feel as if they have settled.

Attendance
Current attendance figures are approximately 30-100 attendees per meet, depending on coinciding events (such as major furcons).

Participants of the LondonFur meets are not restricted to just those who live in London. The meets have had visitors from all over the globe, including Germany, the Netherlands and the United States.

Those who attend the meets are from all areas of the furry fandom. Typically at an average meet, there will be a fair number of artists, fursuiters and lifestylers.

Activities
The normal agenda for a LondonFur meet will be to meet up at the bar from midday onwards, where most will partake in drinking.

At the bar, some members might change into fursuits or don furry items such as ears or tails.

In the afternoon, there is normally a fursuit walk, depending on the weather. After assembling outside, a group of fursuiters, accompanied by helpers and other furs, will go on a walk around the local area of London. The average number of fursuiters is around 7, but more are not uncommon.

A current popular walk takes the fursuiters across the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern, with the group often allowing photographs with tourists and children.

The fursuit walk lasts 1-2 hours. A lot of photos are taken of the walk, and it is often filmed and put on YouTube.

The meet ends around 5 or 6 in the evening, and most furs will leave, or assemble into groups for shopping or food. One much-visited store is Forbidden Planet on Shaftesbury Avenue, a comic-book and sci-fi interest store.

Keeping within the West End area, some furs like to visit CyberCandy. This small shop specialises in imported sweets and drinks; from New Zealand-only Raspberry Coke and Mountain Dew.

Trocadero is a developing favourite, due to its rich mix of amusements, location, transport links, and ability to easily go for refreshments afterwards. DDR Machines are plentiful, as are the usual arcade favourites, such as racing games and air hocky. The Trocadero also has bumper-cars on the upper levels.

There is also Namco on the South Bank, Westminster, providing some startling and well-known views of London. Attractions include a DDR machine, a giant screen for watching sports, coin-operated bowling, bumper-cars and pool tables.

Non-meet locations
Very occasionally, groups of LondonFurs band together, and decide to descend on a particular area of London for a day. Camden Town is a favourite, as is St. James Park, and Hyde Park.

Media Appearances
* The London Furs were featured in a documentary shown late night on the UK's Channel 4, under the title "Human Furry Animals" in 2000 as part of their strand of programming called "The Other Side", designed to give new Directors a "break" into TV. It was one of the first early television documentaries to show furries in a positive light.
* Members of the LondonFur community were also featured in a segment on the London only ITV show NightLife, in a piece titled "The Furverts" aired in 2001. Prior to filming, the production crew promised that the segment would not focus purely on the sexual nature (like other documentaries had done) and would give a fair and balanced view. However when the programme was aired it had been edited down to anything but; giving a negative and embarrassing portrayal of Furry. Most, if not all the furries that feature, regret taking part.

rating-ma-button3

* Chapter 21: "Father's Footsteps" - Fisk learns that his late father had an undercover CIA job, and that when his father died, the agency went rouge. He agrees to join what now amounts to an illegal terrorist organization.
* Chapter 22: "Roll Play" Lucy gets talked into joining a Zombie Campaign in a D&D style RPG-game by Tommy along with three of his friends.
* Chapter 23: "Persia" Fisk tracks down his cousin Persia when she goes missing.

Outside story arcs
Jay Naylor sells many of his erotic comics online on his website. Several of them are based on the Better Days storyline.

:There's a relevant entry in Jay's LiveJournal where some of the details of the split between Better Days and BDK are discussed. --Sebkha 15:17, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

----
Of note, there's already a Wikipedia entry for Better Days. Does wikifur need to replicate that, or should it just redirect?

:Debatable. It's a furry topic, so it should probably be mentioned here, at least. I don't know how popular it is, but if it's not got a significant fanbase, it's possible it might be deleted over there, in which case the whole article could justifiably be moved over here. For now, we should certainly link to it. --GreenReaper 22:53, 17 Sep 2005 (UTC)

::Better Days is currently ranked #4 by number of subscribers at the Belfry WebComics Index. That's out of over 1100 furry comics. I'd say that's a pretty significant fanbase. --mwalimu 03:31, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)
General timeline trivia?

:Interesting idea about the impending war...Fisk's in the army now, after all. Spaz Kitty

::Well, I commented on his LJ after FWA and he replied rather quickly...so you may get a response sooner than expected. Spaz Kitty
No harm done either way. ----Markus(talk) 01:22, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

At least one of the descriptions under Outside story arcs, that of Puss in Boots, is quoted directly from the catalogue. At the least, this should be attributed. -- Sine 01:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
