More specialised reptiles include snakes (which lack legs), tortoises (which are protected by a thick shell), and crocodiles (which have bony plates under their scales). Also, dinosaurs (including birds) are reptiles, though they are warm-blooded, have vertical posture and are usually covered in feathers, not scales.

Dragons often have reptilian features.

Though reptiles are rather ancient, first appearing in Carboniferous, they are not the oldest vertebrates on Earth - they're preceded by fish and amphibians and are about as old as synapsids.

Reptiles and furry
Probably second only to mammals, reptiles (also known as scalies) are quite a common sight in the furry fandom.

Reptiles in popular media
Reptiles are most often seen in computer games, but cartoon appearances (especially Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) are also well-known.

* Kaa from Jungle Book
* Riptor from Killer Instinct
* Reptile from Mortal Kombat
* Aeon Calcos (Lizard Man) from Soul Calibur
* Ninja Turtles from TMNT
* Leon Polwalski from Star Fox Series
* Gex from the Gex Series
* Sir Hiss from Robin Hood
* The Lizard from Spiderman

See also
* Reptile characters
* Reptile on Wikipedia

es:Reptil
ru:Рептилии

92.101.229.69:

unref
Scalies is a furry term used to describe both anthropomorphic creatures of the reptile and amphibian variety, and furries that identify themselves as such or prefer the concept of such beings over furred characters. It is also a self-moniker for the users of alt.fan.dragons, a Usenet discussion group for all things draconid.

As creations, scaly characters tend to have a coating of scales much like the animals they represent. However, some scalies, such as amphibians, lack scales, instead having bare, moist skin, and some others, like some dragons and (very few) dinosaurs, have very light or no true scales, but a fleshy hide similar to the skin of a human (in the case of dinosaurs, feathers are also common).

Some well known scaly artists include AmberScale, Fossil, Chris Sawyer, Lizardbeth, Kaa Bakensobek, Bahamut and Yusky, among others.

See also
*Herp
*Herpetophile

es:Scalie
fr:Scaly
it:scalie
ru:Чешуйчатый
