Bad Dog Books is a publishing house founded by Alex Vance which employs modern print-on-demand technology to publish anthropomorphic fiction.

Originally named Osfer's Joint Publications, its flagship product was FANG, a serial anthology of furry fiction intended to reinvigorate widespread interest in printed anthropomorphic fiction. To emphasize its focus on imagination over imagery, FANG featured no artwork whatsoever, with the exception of the iconic BDB logo by Kamui.

Ben Goodridge joined in spring of 2006, as Alex's health did not allow him to continue serving as FANG's editor and when the anthology was restarted in July 2006, Bad Dog Books was created to continue and expand OJP's original vision.

Beside FANG, BDB produces a line of novels by authors hand-picked by the staff. As of January 2010, five novels are available, including White Crusade by Ben Goodridge.

Bad Dog Books produces its books in trade paperback, black and white with a full-color cover, typically for a list price of $19.99. As of 2007, BDB's books are available directly through the Bad Dog Bookstore as well as through FurPlanet.

Bad Dog Books are more expensive than most paperbacks due to the print-on-demand method of publication. Print-on-demand has a very high unit price, but does not require the bulk printing and significant initial investment of traditional offset printing, resulting in lower average cost for small print runs. This lower initial investment minimizes the risk involved with the production of any particular title, freeing Bad Dog Books from large financial concerns and conferring a substantial measure of freedom and flexibility in the projects it selects and products it publishes.

Print-on-demand allows the manufacture of books with a very fast turnaround. FANG was first conceived in June 2005 and was released to the public three months later -- in those three months, a website was created, authors were attracted, submissions were reviewed and edited, and the book was proofed for printing. Considering the speed and efficiency of print-on-demand publication and the absence of up-front investments, the actual conversion of a print-ready text into a publishable document is a comparatively swift process, owing primarily to BDB's experience in publishing.

Logo
In early 2006, Kamui was contracted to design a logo for Bad Dog Books. The logo was to bring to mind the sleek black premium style of the FANG books that were BDB's flagship product, as well as the gritty, mature energy of BDB's other books.

Working from keywords such as 'dog', 'smoke', 'cool' and 'danger' Kamui came up with several design concepts, finally pitching the two prelimenary logos shown here. The first was deemed too geometric and static, the second too heavily stylized, resembling the visual style of White Wolf, publishers of, among others, the Werewolf line of RPG books.

By fusing the stark geometry of the first with the rough-edged energy of the second,, the final design was achieved. This logo graces all BDB products.

The canine character depicted (also informally known as Jules Reve or, more commonly, as the Bad Dog) is not an existing character or representation thereof.

Graywolf produced a variation on the BDB Logo for the "Year of the Bad Dog" promotional campaign in 2007.

Kemono (Japanese 獣, ケモノ, or けもの "beast") is a genre of Japanese art and character design that prominently features fictional anthropomorphic or sentient animal characters in human-like settings and situations. It is used widely in drawing, painting, manga, anime, and video game designs, many of which are popular in the rest of the world.

Human-like animal characters are called Jūjin (Japanese 獣人 or じゅうじん "therianthrope"; alternatively, these characters are also sometimes read as kemonobito "beast-human").

Their unique design differs from artist to artist, but in general they combine popular character design with animal traits deemed cute and endearing. However, most kemono character designs retain a fundamentally human personality, seldom acting like the real animals after which they are designed.

As such, kemono are usually shown living the way normal humans live in the same setting: speaking normal language, wearing normal clothes, eating normal food, living in normal homes, in ways that blur their distinction from ordinary humans.

Currently, kemono art is often distributed through Japanese fanzine circles, "doujinshi."

There is also kemono which depicts young animals, much like cub art: kemololi (female cub) / kemoshota (male cub).

Kemono and furry
Though based on very different cultural ideals, kemono and furry fandom on the Internet can occasionally overlap, both geographically and in influence. Some kemono artists appeal to both at the same time.

Due to similarity in subject matter, people interested in kemono art are also frequently interested in furry art (and vice versa.)

In early 2010, Kemonochan was created as an image board for English-speaking users who are fans of kemono artwork.

Kemono in the Media
Kemono is most easily encountered outside of Japan in Anime, Manga, and Video games. Below is a selected list of popular and obscure anime that are primarily Kemono/furry (see Anime for a more complete list).
* Pokemon

Kemonomimi (獣耳 animal ears) is an anime and manga terminology that describes characters that possess animal like features. The characters will be predominately human and any real animal characteristics are minimal, unlike kemono characters who possess a large percentage of animal parts in ratio with their human parts. Generally kemonomimi characters have ears and a tail which is animal-like. Often this is just part of their attire and can be removed at will.

Some specific types of kemono are common enough to be known by their own terms:
*Nekomimi / nekomusume - 'cat ears' or 'cat daughter', cat-girls are probably the best-known.
* Kitsunemimi / kitsunemusume - 'fox ears' or 'fox daughter', the second most common variant after cat-girls.
* Usagimimi / usagimusume - 'rabbit ears' or 'rabbit daughter'.
* Inumimi / inumusume - 'dog ears' or 'dog daughter'.
* Umamimi / umamusume - 'horse ears' or 'horse daughter'.
* Ushimimi / ushimusume - 'cow ears' or 'cow daughter'.

A MUCK is an online role-playing game that is usually text-based and accessible through telnet, as well as a variety of MUCK clients.

The actual expansion of the acronym MUCK is disputed, however some suggestions include:
* Multi User Created Kingdom
* Multi User Chat Kingdom
* Multi User Construction Kit

It has also been suggested that the word MUCK is a play on the word MUD, or Multi User Dungeon, a similar type of game platform that is more focused on a points based role playing system.

Each MUCK has its own sets of rules and policies. Some MUCKs allow players to be Out Of Character (OOC) as much as they like, while others require them to be In Character (IC) more often, or always. Rules can vary in different areas of the MUCK.

Most MUCKs allow players to build. Creation might be restricted to simple objects, expanded to rooms and exits, or policy might allow for complex scripting. The creation and customization aspects of MUCK allow the player base to build a world.

The term "mucking" means playing on a MUCK.

TinyMUCK Programming Languages
*MPI - A macro expansion language used to make descriptions more dynamic, it has grown into a full fledged language on it's own.
*MUF - The original extension language introduced in TinyMUCK it is faster than MPI and commonly used for larger projects.

Types of MUCK Servers
*TinyMUCK - Original fork of TinyMUD that added the MUF programming language (as its most notable feature).
*MUCK - Current most popular TinyMUCK server that runs the two biggest servers.
*GlowMUCK - Fork of NeonMUCK.

* NeonMUCK is a defunct MUCK project that was derived from a couple of lesser known derivatives of Muck 5.x - PuebloMUCK and RattyMUCK. Its primary feature was the addition of displaying ANSI color. GlowMUCK is a fork of NeonMUCK 1.x focusing more on stability and multi-platform compatibility. ProtoMUCK is derived from the NeonMUCK 2.x code and focuses on adding more extensive features such as additional prims, SSL and SQL support.

*ProtoMUCK is a MUCK server program that is the direct descendant of NeonMUCK 2.x which itself is derived from RattyMUCK, PuebloMUCK, and MUCK. It attempts to maintain software compatibility with them while adding features. These features include: extensive ANSI color support, multiple wizard levels, @gag support, file access primitives, and more. Proto also maintains partial compatibility with older GlowMUCK and NeonMUCK server software, including their style of ANSI color encoding.

ProtoMUCK developers include Akari, Alynna, Hinoserm and The Blob. The ProtoMUCK project has often placed an emphasis on developing and adding unique new features.
