The Whiteboard is a paintball webcomic created by "Doc" Nickel, an Alaskan airsmith. It has been collected into five print books to date: "The Whiteboard: Digitally Remastered" (2005) [ISBN: 1-59971-219-9], "The Whiteboard: Untapped Potential" (2006), and "The Whiteboard: Hit It Again!" (2007), "Target Rich Environment" (2009), "You Only Ref Twice" (2010). A special full-page color The Whiteboard was also featured in Games International magazines' special "What Paintball Gear?" issue in 2003. In 2004, the Russian magazine пейнтбол (Paintball) printed several translated versions of early TWB strips.

It centers around Doc, an anthro polar bear who runs Doc's Shop, a paintball supply and repair shop where he often tinkers with the laws of physics. He and his friends, a group of various anthros, are often playing paintball. Humans are present, typically only as bystanders and other paintball players. Usually the humans are depicted as being either inept, new to the game (newbies), or general canon fodder.

The first strip was created on July 18, 2002, using a dry-erase board: <blockquote>I'd just installed the board in the shop, and on a whim I scribbled up this comic, snapped a pic and posted it in the forum. The forum regulars liked it, so I drew a couple more and posted those as well. -Doc Nickel</blockquote>

The difficulty in photographing the shiny whiteboard surface, and the limitations of the single-panel format led to the change to a more conventional pen-and-ink three panel layout. The strip was originally based on personal anecdotes collected while running a paintball shop, but it has evolved into a comic with many unique characters and storylines receiving 168,000 unique visitors a month.

<blockquote>TWB was never intended to be a furry strip. Besides the fact it wasn't intended to be a regular feature in the first place, polar bear was chosen simply as a clearly-Alaskan icon, and as a stereotypically bad-tempered, grumpy sort. I mean, would you want to tell a grumpy bear that you broke your marker and need it fixed by Friday? When I started thinking about a regular-feature strip, I started planning the usual fish out of water gags; customers surprised at a bear working the counter, calling Fish & Game who would come and tranquilize him and try to transplant him back to the arctic, yadda yadda. I thought those jokes were too clichéd, however, and wanted to focus on the shop/customer jokes, which is why I drew the original comic in the first place. -Doc Nickel </blockquote>
Critical Reaction
Howard Tayler, author of Schlock Mercenary, wrote of The Whiteboard: "If you’re not already reading The Whiteboard as part of your daily trawl, I hope it’s not because you think the comic is only funny to paintballers. I’ve only paintballed once (an experience I found miserable) and the comic is one of my favorites."
Premise
It is about the misadventures of Rhea Snaketail, a Jakkai who is killed and sent to the Ring of Slightly Damned, between hell and purgatory (hence the name "Slightly Damned"), and the creatures she meets, like the clumsy, but well-meaning fire demon Buwaro.

Later on she escapes back to the world of living, Medius with Buwaro and finds a white bunny who they name "Snowy". They later discover that the bunny is actually an angel named Kieri Suizahn, who was taken to Medius with her brother the same way Rhea and Buwaro were. Later finding out her brother and his friend had left. They travel the countryside as they try to find the brother. Meeting several other characters including but not limited to Heathcliff Sinclair his wife Miranda and his niece Samantha.

Raizy maintains that the comic is not a furry comic; however, it is listed here as it may be of interest to the furry community.

Characters
The following description is taken from Slightly Damned's cast page with permission from the artist, Raizy the Chu.
spoiler
Rhea Snaketail
Rhea is a Jakkai who was sentenced to the Ring of the Slightly Damned in Hell after she was mysteriously murdered. Unlike most Jakkai, she was not very religious before she died. Her last name comes from her unusually long tail. Rhea is cynical and easily angered, but has a good heart. Rhea likes to tease people, especially easy targets like Buwaro and Kieri. She has a bad habit of trying to overburden herself with responsibilities. Rhea watches over Buwaro and Kieri like an overprotective older sister. Incidentally, her favorite food is rabbit.

Buwaro
Buwaro is a fire Demon who hails from the Ring of the Slightly Damned; a ring so barren that it's not usually counted as a part of "real" Hell. He spent most of his life completely alone with his pet rock Thadius before Rhea arrived, although Death and his older sister Sakido visited him occasionally. Buwaro is naive and foolish, but ever since he met Rhea he has been improving. Despite being a Demon, Buwaro is very kind and tries to become friends with everyone he meets. He loves Rhea like a family member, and cherishes his friendship with Kieri due to her gentle nature.

Kieri "Snowy" Suizahn
Kieri is an Angel from Heaven who was cursed by Toski, one of the Twelve Guardians, so that she would occasionally turn into a snow bunny. She was terrified of Buwaro when they first met. However, when she saw that Buwaro was friendly (and harmless), they quickly became friends. Attracted to his warm heart, she now harbors a crush for him. Kieri also looks up to Rhea for her confidence and savviness, as she herself has low self-esteem. But although she is very shy, she is quite powerful in combat, wielding her sword along with water and holy magic with great skill. Buwaro insists on calling her "Snowy".

Thadius
Thadius is Buwaro's pet rock. She is at least as old as creation.

Death
Death is... well, the Grim Reaper. It's his job to guide souls to their proper place after they've died. He visited Buwaro and Rhea occasionally when they were still in Hell. Despite his scary appearance, he has a very friendly personality.

Sakido
Buwaro's older sister was a wind Demon who used to live in "real" Hell before moving to the Ring of the Slightly Damned. Although Sakido made her home in the same ring, she lived alone apart from Buwaro. Unlike her younger brother, she was always very quiet and serious. Sakido was initially suspicious of Rhea when she first came to Hell, but eventually opened up to her. Sakido died bringing Buwaro and Rhea out of Hell.

Iratu
Iratu is Buwaro's oldest sibling and a vicious alcoholic. He's a behemoth even amongst earth Demons. Iratu lived in "real" Hell, far from his brother and sister, and rarely visited. Recently, he is in Medius with the fire demon Azurai and a wind demon named Tsavo. Their goals so far are unknown, but it can be suspected that they have plans for the gathering.

Lazuli
Lazuli is an ill-tempered water Demon with a vendetta against Kieri. She and her comrade, Talus, kidnapped Kieri and separated her from her brother and his friend. Thanks to the help of Buwaro and Rhea, Kieri escaped from their clutches. Talus was killed in battle by drowning, and Lazuli was left with a scar in her side from Kieri's sword. She is now searching Fragaria in order to get her revenge.

Kazai Suizhan
Kazai is the twin brother of Kieri. He and his friend Sanjulo were separated from Kieri when she was kidnapped by Demons. He and Sanjulo are searching Fragaria for Kieri, while Kieri is searching for them along with Buwaro and Rhea. Kazai is described as having a very different personality from his twin sister, and was always praised for being the stronger of the two. Despite this, he and Kieri are close.

Jake "J" Thorndyke
Rhea's childhood human friend from the mountain village of Farun. Rhea calls him by his nickname, "J", while he calls Rhea by her nickname, "Snake". J is a bit clumsy and has a mischievous streak. He currently works at the used clothing store in Farun, and was the one who sold Buwaro's pimp suit to Rhea (who didn't know what she was buying at the time). J agreed to be Rhea's penpal while she traveled around Fragaria with Buwaro and Kieri.

Darius Elexion
Darius is an earth Angel who was stranded in Hell during the Great War roughly 15 years prior to the comic. While there, he became the foster father of the orphaned Iratu, Sakido, and Buwaro in the Ring of the Slightly Damned. It was revealed in his diary that the three Demon siblings were not related by blood. He was blinded in his right eye by a young berserk Buwaro, and keeps half his face wrapped in bandages to hide the scars. Darius modified his Angelic pendants for the use of his adopted children; Buwaro currently holds the star and sun. When he parted with his foster children to help them sneak in to hell, he was caught by the Grim Reaper. However, the Grim Reaper made a compromise with him in exchange for Darius's life, and also for his foster childrens' lives as well. Due to this compromise, he is currently acting as the Grim Reaper in place of the real Grim Reaper to allow Iratu, Buwaro, and the late Sakido to live out their own lives.

Heathcliff "Cliff" Sinclair
Heathcliff Sinclair is a traveler who roams Medius in a wagon with his wife Miranda, his niece Samantha, and his friend Duster. He makes his living as a peddler. Due to his travels, Heathcliff is very worldly. He does not fall for Kieri and Buwaro's "disguises", and resents Buwaro for being a Demon. Although he has a surly personality and is suspicious of strangers, deep down he's really a good guy.

Samantha "Sammy" Kailum
Samantha is the daughter of Heathcliff Sinclair's deceased sister. Since her parents' death, she has traveled around the world with her aunt and uncle. She has a sweet personality, but she is headstrong and impulsive. Samantha is not easily surprised by things such as the existence of Angels and Demons, due to her experiences living a particularly interesting nomadic lifestyle. Thanks to Duster, she learned how to communicate with Fairies.

Miranda Sinclair
Heathcliff's wife and Samantha's aunt. Miranda is originally from The Dragon Island Archipelago southeast of Fragaria, but now she travels with her family all around Medius. She is currently pregnant with her husband's child. Miranda has a very motherly personality, and thinks of Samantha as her own daughter. She encouraged Rhea, Buwaro, and Kieri to travel with her and her family. Miranda and Heathcliff argue a lot, but they love each other very much.

Duster
Duster is a Fairy who looks like a moth. He is an old friend of Heathcliff's, and he travels with the Sinclair family around Medius in their wagon. He can often be found in the front pocket of Heathcliff's vest. Duster is a charming ladies' man (or at least that's what he would like to believe), and is unusual among Fairies for being able to speak common language, albeit with a thick accent. He has an easygoing personality.
