History
Since its creation in 2002, Yiffy.net has undergone several incarnations, with several features and services being added with each one, with its latest form recoded with Simple Machines Forum's forum script software, a temporary solution until its administrators find alternate scripts or software that will come close to, if not meet, phpBB's abilities

In Autumn (Fall) 2006, Sniper Fox stepped down as site administrator for personal reasons, appointing Micah Coon and Taryn in his place.

Yiffy.net is now in its 3rd incarnation, this time on SMF format; a move that has had very mixed reception. Whilst some members prefer the simpler, more stable environment, others feel that it is a step backwards and caused Yiffy.net to lose it's originality and uniqueness.

Users
Yiffy.net is currently home to over 4,500 furs (including alternate accounts,) with 500 to 600 users logging on during an average day. The site generally has a ratio of around 3.5 times as many male furs as female furs, and they are tracked by "join date," with a star awarded under their avatar images for each year they've been a member, as well as a title that is connected to the number of posts they have made since joining.

Yiffy.net strictly enforces a policy of not allowing underage users to visit the site. Any time a user is suspected of being under their legal age to view adult material in their locality, they are immediately suspended until they provide legal proof of age. This is a very unpopular practice, but this hard line stance is to comply with the legal requirement of the site's owners and administrators to prevent minors accessing what is legally classed as pornographic material.

Netspeak
The site had an extremely hard-lined stance on Netspeak. One of the administrators, Micah Coon, had this to say about it:

As of late this stance has undergone further review and considerations (significantly from a former moderator, Talija, who was asked to return by Micah Coon) and the netspeak rules have been relaxed. Micah is still on the record as being openly against it but has relented on the enforcement of the policy.

The current policy (which is still under review) is as such:

*Wording such as abbreviating small words (i.e. "you" becomes "u", "your" and "you're" become "ur", "to" and "too" become "2", etc) are still outright banned. Users, however, will be warned once before facing suspension.
*Use of terms such as "LOL", "BRB", and "WB" are now allowed in moderation. Casual use will not result in any disciplinary action. Flagrant abuse of it (i.e. Using "LOL" twice every sentence), will.

In summation, the emphasis is on moderation in its usage.

Controversy
Underaged users
Yiffy.net has recently started to operate an increasingly aggressive policy towards keeping minors out of the site. Before, aside from the Terms of Agreement users face when registering, members were only age-checked if there was suspicion of them being too young. Now, however, the tendency is for the moderation team to request proof of age from any member who causes trouble. If they are unable to provide such, then their IPs are banned from the site until they can show themselves to be of the necessary age to view adult material in their locale, a fairly effective way of preventing them from re-registering with a different account.
