I do think it's worth mentioning that the game does not have any monarchy-inspired systems in place. There are plenty of African-based wildlife games, both active and defunct, that claim they aren't based on the Lion King, but I have yet to find a single one, besides this, that doesn't feature kings, queens, princes and princesses. It's definitely become the norm to have things set up that way, so I think it's important to make the distinction that this one isn't. Just saying that the game isn't based on TLK isn't enough anymore - unless there's evidence to back that up. 70.179.48.226 06:08, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

According to the game's website, players are allowed one main character and five alternate characters, but - circumstances permitting - players may be given special permission to request a sixth or seventh character after speaking with staff. In keeping with the game's namesake and theme, the MUCK "only allows species that are found naturally in the area" of the Kalahari Desert - and, additionally, enforces special rules involving the number of lions that each player is allowed to have in order to prevent their overpopulation.

Mythology and Structure
Cry of the Kalahari: Red Sun Rising is the first game of its kind to deviate from the monarchy-inspired pridal structure seen in many other multiplayer worlds based on or inspired by The Lion King - such as African Tales MUCK and, later, Sunrise MUCK. Many species have been given their own deities and belief systems based loosely on real African mythology, and staff regularly updates the game's wiki and forums with new pieces of folklore that tie into its backstory and any tinyplots that are running.

Although the game possesses a relatively high degree of realism (prides "ruled" by more than one male lion, only the dominant pair in meerkat mobs allowed to reproduce, etc.), its mythology has become its focus; past storylines have included trickster figures meddling in the affairs of mortals, and an avatar of death's quest to destroy a litter of Wild Dogs so that he might prevent his eventual downfall.

Characters who have passed on are allowed to linger in the game's spirit world, which has a realm of its own.

Domains
As of January 2008, Red Sun Rising has four unique areas open for play: Ekundu Basin, Mt. Njozi, the Great Dune Sea, and the Shadowlands.

Additionally, staff has emphasized that the game is "intended to be a more private MUCK" and that "RP on this MUCK is going to be very player driven, as opposed to staff driven."

There is no limit on the number of characters that can be applied for, and unlike many other games that utilize the same setting, there is presently no cap on wolf-dog characters.
