69.231.160.17:

The Architect of Sleep is a novel by Steven R. Boyett that details the travels of a man lost in a land of anthropomorphic animals, guided by a female raccoon with whom he learns to communicate. Many furries consider this novel to be one of the staple original furry novels. Boyett has put himself at some pain to distance himself from any such categotry. Published in 1986 by Ace Books with ISBN 0441029051, it is since out of print. Second-hand copies are currently (April 2006) easily found through http://www.abebooks.com/

One notable detail about the book is that its story abruptly ends, and no sequel exists in public print. The story of this is detailed on Steven Boyett's website about the project. As of May 2003, the sequel to Architect of Sleep, tentatively titled The Geography of Dreams, is still in production, but it may never be published.
