68.43.152.39: Removed political slant and changing definition unless a citation can be provided.

Zaftig comes from a Yiddish term meaning 'pleasantly plump.'

In the furry fandom, it means a character who is fat. Zaftig is occasionally used interchangably with fat furs. Some feel that the terms are different, with zaftig meaning someone who is a small percentage above average weight, while fat fur means someone who is significantly above average weight.

SonicBlu Darkfold

68.43.152.39: Correct spelling, removed POV

SonicBlu (born May 19, 1972) portrays a dinosaur character online, and considers himself a performer, singer, songwriter, author, columnist, voice actor and radio broadcaster, with a future outlook on live acting. He is currently looking towards a regular acting career to add to his workload within the arts.

At conventions, SonicBlu is most likely seen performing the stage of variety shows and/or masquerades. He is also a horror writer, known in a few places inside and outside the furry subculture. He heads the Furry Writers of Ohio (FWO), and also records furry and non-furry parodies of popular music. SonicBlu's albums are available for purchase at any convention he attends. Recently, a local movie shoot granted him with yet another endeavor, which increased his interest in acting. In addition to all that, he also hosts a nightly classic rock and oldies internet radio show, featuring voice impersonations of his zany cast of co-hosts and celebrities.

Due to a back injury, SonicBlu is no longer able to work any job which requires lifting, bending, stooping, standing, or sitting still for prolonged periods of time, and thus makes his living on his many endeavors. He lives in Columbus, Ohio.

Biography
SonicBlu officially entered the fandom in 1997, when he had begun to write stories alongside his job, mostly pertaining to manual labor work. Because he kept constantly active and athletic, SonicBlu was never the type to sit still for too long.

Dreaming in radio
While living in New Mexico, colleagues, friends, and people he would meet on a daily basis suggested to SonicBlu that he should look into radio broadcasting. Through his extensive knowledge of classic rock and oldies, naturally deep voice, and outgoing personality, he decided to create five demo tapes of his broadcasting style and his ability to provide impromptu commentaries. He worked feverishly on five demo tapes, which displayed these and many other qualities that would win him a radio show, including voice talents, celebrity impersonations, and knowledge of musical history. He set out for the only radio station in town, headed by a DJ he once knew in passing. He handed the demo tapes over to the head DJ, who took an immediate liking to the style and material being used. Unfortunately, the DJ informed him that his style and personality was "too loud for a small, quiet town," and that he should "consider taking the show to a bigger city with a bigger audience." Not knowing whether to smile or frown at the news, SonicBlu put away his desires for broadcasting, and concentrated on his regular work duties.

Joy and misfortune
SonicBlu moved from New Mexico to Baltimore, where he started becoming more interested in writing after a visit to Anthrocon in 2000. Just a few months later, SonicBlu sustained a major spinal injury at his workplace, which put him out of commission from performing hard labor jobs, and also restricted his standing and sitting times. Though he had always considered himself to be a hard worker and the only one who didn't mind doing the majority of housework, he could not stand to be completely helpless in the face of the working world.

Words and music
He began concentrating more on his writing career, and in 2003, he published his first non-furry horror novel, which was a revision of The Outer Realm -- an old manuscript he originally started in the winter of 1996. By this time, he wrote eight furry stories, and was already beginning work on his second non-furry horror novel. A full year later marked the finalization of Brandish Mountain. SonicBlu is currently considering the release of his longer works of fiction with two separate publishers. His shorter works of literature -- including quarterly articles -- can be seen regularly in the horror magazines Night to Dawn and Wicked Karnival. Online magazines such as Naked Snake Online and Dark Walls have also featured his poetry.

SonicBlu did not just stop at these writings. During Mephit Furmeet 2003, he met with a PlanetFurry moderator, who mentioned a story-posting forum he may have found interesting. Later that weekend, he also learned of the community's radio broadcaster server, which caught SonicBlu's immediate attention and re-opened the door of opportunity on one of his many dream jobs.

A few months later, SonicBlu started the Time Machine Show, which was based on the five demo tapes he made years ago. The show has been running for what would have been two solid years, but he was forced to take a nine-month hiatus due to lack of income to pay for an internet connection. During his downtime, SonicBlu concentrated on whatever paying projects he could find, which came from a few regular submissions made to horror magazines that continue to feature his literature. The Time Machine Show returned to internet radio with a new time schedule, and it still runs to this day. The show is aired via Shoutcast on weeknights at 10:00 PM Eastern time.

At times, SonicBlu will resort to celebrity impersonations to produce a more realistic feel of sending his listeners back in time to the prime ages of classic rock & roll. He is also known to provide voice talents for the show's comic relief. SonicBlu plans to arrange live phone-in interviews with actual celebrities on his show. The celebrities that were willing to arrange live phone-in segments involve: Eddy Medora (Former lead guitarist/vocalist of The Sunrays), David Kaffinetti (Keyboardist for 60s group Rare Bird and the mock group Spinal Tap), Gary Lewis (Gary Lewis & The Playboys), Wanda Jackson (The Queen of Rockabilly), and Christopher Young (Musical composer for films such as The Grudge, Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, to name a few.)

Friends and performance
After his visit to Anthrocon 2004, he met with furry artist David Von Foxkin for the first time, where he welcomed the newcomer into the convention crowd by getting his fursuiting friends to surround him in an ever-growing group hug (furpile). Seeing how happy it made Foxkin, SonicBlu kept in touch with him on a regular basis.

A few months later, SonicBlu attended Mephit Furmeet, where he considered performing during karaoke night. His plans fell through: he got up enough courage right before the crew was ready to break down the equipment. With disappointment in his heart, he returned home, where he began to collect instrumental backing tracks to popular music. He practiced his poetic writing skills, audio mixing abilities, and singing voice to produce his own parody songs.

The first song he recorded was a tribute to Foxkin's "furpile" moment, entitled Pile of Furries (a parody of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash). Many more parodies were written -- one after the other -- before he realized he had enough material to fill at least three albums. SonicBlu put his writings aside momentarily to work on honing his singing/songwriting abilities, and ended up recording, mixing, and producing his first four albums, which included coming up with cover designs for each of them.

Recently, his friend Siege shone a light upon the opportunity for him to appear in a horror film that was being locally shot. He was included with the cast in a matter of a few days, and went on to offer his insight and acting/voice talents for the film. The movie is entitled Wormwood.

Shiny Things
Flashy LED gadgets seem to be all the rage these days, and SonicBlu has opened up his own online store. They are available for sale any time, but they mostly sell out during conventions. Some of the items he sells consist of LED name badges, LED belt buckles, LED fans, sunglasses that glow and strobe in the dark, LED dog collars, pet blinkers, and LED quartz crystal necklaces that illuminate in a beautiful pattern of colors.

Today
As busy as SonicBlu is (and barely having any leisurely time for anything else), one can say that he no longer needs to worry about lack of work, but his need for a decent income has yet to be fulfilled. It is possible that a difficult struggle for a livable income is inevitable within the arts. His horror work has caught the interests of people such as Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th VII-X), Bill Johnson (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), and Tom Sullivan (Special effects for Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness). SonicBlu believes that if he does well enough with what he loves doing, an income can and will follow sooner or later. He needs but to keep up his ongoing work in every area he can find -- and the work is indeed plentiful.

Halfshell

2007-01-06T03:39:31Z

68.43.152.39: Corrected spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Halfshell or Halfshell Hero, who also uses the name Sabaka and/or Sabaka'Zlo, started in the furry fandom in late 2003. Before becoming a furry, he was introduced to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fandom on message boards such as The Techonodrome and Mikey's TMNT. He started using the current name - Halfshell. And while surfing the net for TMNT, Digimon, Pokémon, etc. stumbled the artwork of Fraggle (Phraggle), Captain Furry, and Byakko Wolf, but these pics were different than any other artwork seen before. The artwork was known as inflation or fat furry art. After surfing many sites with this type of art such as The InflationNation, The Roundhouse, Macropod, and Stonegate and Dragonite's Transformation site, it was on the The InflationNation site where Halfshell submitted his first inflation art of Yoshi, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Scorchio of Neopets.
<div style="border: 4px double green;margin: 3px; padding: 1em; float:center; ">
__TOC__
</div>

Halfshell's Introduction to Furries
After posting the art, Halfshell got his first request from a fur named Jaimetud the Otter. After befriending Jaimetud, Halfshell was introduced to the fandom of furries, especially in the Inflation furs. That's where he met Blue, Captain Furry, Smiler Frog, Dobie the Growlithe and Byakko Wolf (who will be later known as Jheryn Lightfoot), then Alkora Dragon or Husky. After meeting these furs online, Halfshell got more involved in the community.

2004 Highlights -- Blue's Christmas
Late 2004, Jaimetud and Halfshell with the advancement of IM's, would record, Blue's Christmas, a parody of Elvis Presley's Blue Christmas. This was recorded as a Christmas gift to InflationNation. Although the song wasn't much as a hit, but would probably become like a theme song for The InflationNation.

2005: The Big Change
Into 2005, following months of more drawing and making new friends, Halfshell and Jaimetud departed and went their own ways, and Halfshell later met up with SirKain. After befriending SirKain, the person in charge of the InflationNation, Halfshell took a trip to meet him. This was Halfshell's first time meeting another furry in person. After a few trips to SirKain's, Halfshell was invited to go to 2005. This was Halfshell's first con, and he was overjoyed with the number of furries there were in the community. Later in the year, Halfshell had the chance to move in with SirKain, but ending up losing his job and was unable to afford to move east. Halfshell and SirKain's friendship decreased shortly after. In an attempt to find local furs in his neighborhood, Halfshell found Draconya. Halfshell found Red Foxx, but after meeting for the first time to catch a movie, the friendship ended soon after. Halfshell continued to visit Draconya on a regular basis and help her in adaptation her art.

'05 Going Downwards
After visiting other local furs around him, Halfshell recorded his second song, Leavin' The Con a parody of Fool reflecting his Post Con Depression from Anthrocon from earlier that year. The song has never been available for public listening. In Mid 2006, Draconya introduced Halfshell to Northpaw, who remained Halfshell's friend, Draconya has also introduced Molly Margay who designed Halfshell's current fursuit of Sabaka. After much debate and dispute, Molly and Halfshell's friendship ended.

New Areas; SonicBlu
Into 2005, Halfshell picked up and tried to keep his job, and was looking into the site FurNation where he stumbled across the music of SonicBlu. Purchasing SonicBlu's first two albums, Fur Folk and Fun and Sprout Your Fur, the song Making A Fursuit was Halfshell's first furry parody he heard, and fell in love with SonicBlu's style of music. In attempt to contact SonicBlu, Halfshell sent an email asking if SonicBlu if he needed any help with additional help in extra voices, and sent in "Leavin' The Con".

2006
Rolling into 2006, Halfshell continued visiting Draconya and was introduced to Northpaw a local fursuiter, and met up with him at Draconya's. Later the three of them would continue to meet up on weekends. After hearing back from SonicBlu, and finding out he host a nightly radio show on the net, The Time Machine show on PlanetFurry radio, Halfshell finally got SonicBlu on an AIM chat session and after a major Role Playing chat, Halfshell would become SonicBlu's current mate. Knowing of SonicBlu's talents, Halfshell tried taking a parody style of his own. Coming up with simple tunes like Caught In A map a parody of Suspicious Minds co written by Draconya. Also remade a simple tune of Won't Chow Down a parody of Won't Back Down by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Taking these songs, they were first introduced on SonicBlu's Time Machine Show, after hearing them on the air, Halfshell strike of an idea about music videos. Using the current written and new recorded songs, he makes three music videos.

'06 Pile of Furries
Also have met Butterscotch, Babs Bunny, Kinky Turtle, and mate SonicBlu, from various cons and meets,
in attempt to previously to make it to Cons after AC 2005, Halfshell finally gets the chance to take part in Midwest FurFest in 2006, catching a ride with Northpaw. At MFF Halfshell gets to meet DragoMike, Verace, Giran, While spending most time in fursuit, Halfshell also spends most time with his mate SonicBlu. After leaving MFF Northpaw and Halfshell visits the local fur near where the con was being held, Nikon Racoon.

More Music
Now back at home, Halfshell continues to visit Draconya and writing down parodies and recording, in hoping to release his first album soon.

*UPDATE: CD Get "Fur" Real should be released in early 2007. Included parodies of Ring Of Fire, Hungry Like The Wolf, Blue Christmas, Won't Back Down, If Everyday Was Like Christmas, Suspicious Minds, Fool, and many others.

Characters
Sabaka (Zlo) is Halfshell's first orignal character. It started he and another kid wanted to start their own comic book involving two dogs, a lab and a husky/wolf mix to fight as enimies. The lab being a character named Sampson, the husky hybrid named Devil Dog. The book was hand drawn with 29 pages telling the story how they faught and how Devil Dog was destroyed, your basic story of good triumphs evil. Then Halfshell revamps Devil Dog in the roleplaying game as Dungeons and Dragons. The game was short due to and Anthro was still too new for the RP and the stats were a little to high. The characters was later rejected. Then a few years later, Halfshell had Devil Dog copyright for personal use and protection. In 2003 halfshell had the copyright renewed later as suggested by the copyright patten to make the name a little more orginal, thus Sabaka' Zlo was renamed.
Sabaka, meaning in Russian dog or wolf; Zllo, the meaning in Russian is demon, evil, devil. Sabaka' Zlo is currently being used for IronClaw roleplaying games and is Halfshell's current fursuit.
