67.162.70.168: Added conventions.

Samui Shiiba (born September 18, 1986) is a kitsune otherkin from Elmhurst, Illinois, U.S.A., and is the owner of the community Kitsuria Network.

Bio
Samui was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and lived there until mid-2006 when he moved to Sacramento, where he lived until late 2009. Financial problems prompted him to move to Bremen, Indiana in November 2009, where he stayed for four months. In February 2010, he moved to Elgin, Illinois, where he stayed until late 2013. He currently lives in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Conventions
Samui has attended several conventions:
* Connecticon 2005
* Otakon 2005
* Further Confusion 2007-2008
* SacAnime 2009
* Midwest FurFest 2010-2012
* Anime Central 2012-2013

Characters
Samui K. Shiiba
This is Samui's main character, which represents his inner self. He is a six-tailed fennec fox with icy blue fur. The fur on his chest and on the tips of his tails are white. He has seafoam green eyes, which occasionally change color. As his name implies, his strength lies in the cold. He is tuned to the water and wind elements, though most of his abilities involve the use of ice. Without proper hydration, Samui is unable to withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures. He has the ability to size-shift, however the tallest he can be is his normal height of two and a half feet in his nonmorphic form, and six feet in his anthropomorphic form. He uses this ability to shrink himself for evasion or stealth.

In Pokemon themed roleplay, Samui takes on the form of a Glaceon, which is very similar to his kitsune self. Depending on where he uses this character, the similarities would be limited to whatever the theme allows.

LAFF Bowling

Every third Saturday of the month, Lake Area Furry Friends holds its monthly LAFF Bowling or LAFFBowl meet. Organized originally by "The Reverend" Ash Maurice Cairo, the bowling meet has been around since early 2004, the first meet only having 4 attendees. Since then, attendance has increased to an average of 85 each month, reaching over 100 on occasion. The event has changed chairmen a few times, being chaired by Butterscotch Vixen, Shale Ari, Timoran, and Reimori. Currently a committee of staff members run LAFFBowl, based on availability.

LAFF dinners were held at Buona Beef until October 2012. Buona beef has closed down and dinners as of December 2012 are now held at The Patio. Once food and drinks are had, the task of shepherding furs towards their vehicles begins to head to the bowling alley. Previously, bowling was held at Fox Bowl in Glen Ellyn, IL, However bowling is now at Tivoli Bowl in Downers Grove Illinois.

In 2006, due to several issues between LAFF and Fox Bowl's management, LAFF bowling shifted to a local Brunswick Zone in Glendale Heights, IL. Thanks to cooperation with staff, fursuiters were welcome to suit up and bowl in fursuits. A headless lounge is provided by both alleys free of charge. In the background, artists set up supplies on the tables and begin drawing, often offering free sketches to friends or those interested. After the first round, Fox Bowl often turns off the lights to begin Cosmic Bowling, where black lights illuminate balls, pins and even fursuits.

The event usually lasts 2 or 3 games before the after-parties begin. Popular venues have been Denny's, Steak and Shake and White Castle, home of SliderCon. Since moving to the Brunswick location, bowling went into decline, due to waning interest in the event and the new location. Attendance had been falling rapidly as a result. However, the introduction of an air hockey tournament in January 2007 combined with some basic solutions to the problems at hand and bowling became no longer in danger of fading away and Brunswick became a more permanent home for the bowling.

However, not all members of LAFF were pleased with the move, preferring the environment and amenities that Fox Bowl provided. In June 2007, a second bowling event was started, in hopes to return bowling to Fox Bowl, providing local furries a choice between bowling at Brunswick and Fox Bowl. This event was organized and run by Rayven Wolffe and Blazger and runs the week after the Brunswick Zone event, allowing furries to attend both if they choose.

After Brunswick Zone replaced the party room with a pro shop, LAFFBowl moved again to Tivoli Bowl in Downers Grove, where it has been welcomed for many years.

Simba Lion (United States)

2012-04-05T22:10:15Z

67.162.70.168: /* Convention involvement */

SimbaLion (S.J.H.) was born on March 23, 1979 in Southfield, Michigan. His father is technically minded, while his mother was a painter and sculpter, which has resulted in a wide range of interests both creative and technical.

He currently lives in Chicago, and is studying music theory and composition.

Fandom involvement
Simba discovered the fandom in 1996, and because he was a fan of Walt Disney's The Lion King, he took on the nickname SimbaLion and created a character to fit.

Having seen large "furry" communities growing in places like Chicago, California, New York, and other major population centers, Simba wondered why a similar community didn't exist in Michigan. Taking matters into his own hands, he created the MIFur mailing list and began hosting regular events. At first it would be a good day if 3-5 people showed up. Within a few years, the community had swelled to the point where it was common for a major party to have 50-60 guests. Today, MIFur is one of the largest "furry" communities in the U.S. and holds big events on a fairly regular basis, including a new convention which began its life in April 2008, Furry Connection North.

Convention involvement
Simba has been volunteering his time with conventions for many years. Since 2000 he has worked with Midwest FurFest as a member of the security team, and since 2001 he's been working with the Audio and Video department at Anthrocon. He started as a volunteer, was quickly recruited to staff, and promoted to director when the position became available upon Triggur's departure in 2006, until 2010.

In addition to the traditional A/V duties, Simba also coordinated the Anthrocon dances, and booked DJ talent. Anthrocon's dances are known for discovering and putting a spotlight on some of the most talented DJs in the furry fandom, and he works each year toward furthering this goal. His last year as a convention volunteer was 2010.
