As with many current cultures and subcultures, the furry fandom has been subject to intense stereotyping.

Stereotypes can arise from virtually any facet of a group or demographic, depend partly on trends within the demographic, and are usually formed from the experiences and biases of the viewer or their friends. Some furry stereotypes have more than a grain of truth to them; however, many others fail to hold up under closer scrutiny of furry fans and culture.

Mainstream generalization
Furry fandom's member demographics have traditionally intercrossed with other existing cultures and fandom, such as science fiction, fantasy, anime, computing, and video gaming. As such, furry fan or furry artist are also often viewed (stereotyped) as fanboys, nerds and/or geeks at best, or a hairy, overweight (usually male), unwashed individual, living in his parents' basement while surfing for pornography on the Internet.

The particulars of the furry fandom 's culture may present what some furry outsiders would frequently consider strange, unusual, or bizarre takes on the wider fantasy and funny animal genre. This has led to the stereotypes being thought up as sometimes more extreme than the typical fandom. For example, one list of some extra stereotypical points that have often been attached to furry fandom would paint most furries as:

General
Furry Fandom
* Is not an established culture like Anime or Science Fiction.
* Is at best a subculture.
* Educated, still holding a low prestige job as they get older.
* Unemployed/unemployable.
* Majority on disability or other types of welfare assistance (US).
* All females are really men pretending to be females (online).
*All females in fandom are mentally ill

Fursuiters
* All fursuiters are males, no females.
* All fursuits are equipped with SPHs or SPAs.
* All fursuits are covered with encrusted human body fluids.
* Fursuiters use the ample space in their suit to grope little kids at lower heights.
* Fursuiters use their fursuit to lure children to molest them.

Commerce
Artists
* Unable to produce media to at the same skill level as non-furry artists.
* All drawn artwork (traditional/digital) is traced.
* All art media is of a pornographic nature only.
* Cub non-sexual media as a gateway media to child porn.
* No professional (non-furry) artists in the fandom.
** If so, they will be blacklisted soon...
***...And/or will start to create pornographic material for money/attention/popularity.
* Furry artists will take as many commissions as possible:
** And always take forever to finish.
** Will give any excuse for the holdup, including self-hospitalization and/or family death.
** they will then leave the fandom without delivering...
** ...And then come back as a new artist under a new pseudonym, repeating the process.

Commissioners
* All furry commissioners demand that artists create free art for them.
** Or ask for incredible complex media for a ridiculous commission fee.
** Impose impossible deadlines.
** Ask for additional non-agreed upon content.
** Demand more than the agreed-upon amount of redos.
* Furry commissioners will receive the art, then have the payment rescinded via the e-payment service (e.g. Paypal), under different pretenses (fraud, job not delivered, job no as advertised).
* Furry commissioners will take as many commissions as possible:
** Then leave the fandom after receiving the art, without paying...
*** ...And then come back as a new furry fan under a new pseudonym, repeating the process.
* Furry commissioners will often ask for donations for such ailments as self-hospitalization and/or family death, then use the donations to buy extra furry art.

Site or locales
Furry conventions
* There has never been a well planned/fun one.
* They just cater to Babyfurs, Zoophiles, Lifestylers, Plushophiles, and Pedophiles only.
* Participants just go for the gay sex (often with underage fans).
* Participants just go for the illicit substances (alcohol for minors).
* They spooge all over the place, especially elevators.
* The con staff are all retarded, power-hungry, clueless, other.
* The con security are all policeman/military wannabes.

Furry convention events
* Slave auctions (Confurence era).
** Fans/artists were put up for bidding for sex only (normally gay).

Reasons for stereotyping
These common portrayals of the fandom are based on several factors, such as the apparentcn larger than average percentage of individuals in it who are gay, bi, lesbian, or transsexualcn — a point which itself is debated within the fandom. Of course, the image of a social furry fan who has mostly mainstream, unremarkable interests and hobbies is not as titillating to sensationalism seekers in the general public, or groups such as 4Chan.

Even when people who are furries happen to pursue erotic art, engage in activities like sexual plushophilia, or are lifestylers, many are really much more responsible for themselves and the impression they give of the fandom than those who dig for examples to support stereotypes might admit.

No matter how many fans there are who would fit the image of an unremarkable and less controversial Furry fan, there remain those who take part in less common activities, exhibit outrageous or unwise behavior, or provide a relatively rare fit with the most extreme stereotypes. These have, more often than not, been singled out and held up as symbolic of furry fandom.

Counter-reaction
In response to the negative stereotyping that Furries and the Furry Fandom has received, many individuals attempt to dispute the legitimacy of the statements made.

Another view put forth by other Furry fans and some persons outside the fandom is that the enterprise of collecting, advertising, or reinforcing stereotypes is often carried out by individuals who would also fit a number of parallel stereotypes about genre fans, Internet users, and geek culturists. This view has led some to dismiss the entire topic, especially when it relates to online activities, as geeks battling geeks in a war to one-up each other with negative propaganda.

Stereotypes within the fandom, by the fandom
Disputed-section
Unreferenced-section
There are also stereotypes within the furry fandom itself. Some of these are external stereotypes, circulated by furry fans who wish to distance themselves from the unpopular image of furries or hold them up for criticism (see Skunk, Horrifying Look at the Furries, and the Burned Furs).

Species stereotypes
Disputed-section
Other stereotypes are specific to the internal culture of the fandom. Since the Furry genre places emphasis on animal characteristics, certain popular stereotypes are based on the favored species association of a given individual, especially among fans who have a personal furry or role-play frequently. The stereotypical attributes that a certain creature bestows on a person may or may not be based on the accurate behavior of the real animal; metaphorical and mythological traits are fair game.

The stereotyping of Fursona species within the Furry Fandom is most frequently done out of jest, with the most feuding that tends to come from the subject of Fursona choices deriving from what members of the fandom deem “boring” depending on how popular a species may be for selection. It is common for Furry fans to examine themselves to see where they fit within the list of supposed behaviors, whether it be for fun or to help them find the ideal species for their Fursona.

Some examples of species-related stereotypes include, but are not limited to:

* Cats are seen as fickle, but short-tempered and fond of keeping themselves groomed.
* Dragons are seen as arrogant and emotionally turbulent, with a pretentious streak. These particular stereotypes are most frequently attributed to European Dragons.
* Equines are "size queens", into bondage and pony play.
* Male foxes are seen as effeminate and submissive.
* Female foxes are seen as flirtatious exhibitionists.
* Red Pandas Desperately try to seek attention, and choose a red panda as an "original" alternative to foxes, just to get attention.
* Gryphons are seen as haughty and aristocratic.
* Rabbits are neurotic and paranoid, or are sexually promiscuous, and often enjoy being edible.
* Wolves are seen as ravenous and keen on asserting dominance onto others.
* Huskies are treated in a similar manner to Male Foxes.
* Raccoons are seen as antisocial and openly anarchistic.
* Squirrels are seen as energetic and hyperactive.
* Hyenas are seen as brash and shameless.
* Rats are seen as sneaky and content with being dirty.

* Slave auctions (Confurence era).

* It is a fetish in general and/or a pathway to anthropomorphic paraphilias.

* Educated, still holding a low prestige job as they get older.
* Unemployed/unemployable.

* Is not, nor ever will be, a Mainstream culture.
* Is at best a subculture.
* It is a fetish in general and/or a pathway to anthropomorphic paraphilias.

Appearance or orientation
* Overweight.
* Dangerously underweight.
* Extremely old .
* Jailbait.
* Unhygienic.
* Usually homely or ugly.
* Gay, bisexual, and/or transgender only (no heterosexual furs in the fandom.)

Medical disorders

In the instance of creatures which are mythological to begin with, their attributed behavior might be inspired more by fandom conventions than traditional mythologies and stories.

It should be noted that many fans circulate and use species stereotypes as humorous cliches which are not intended to cause offense. It is common for Furry fans to examine themselves to see where they fit within the list of supposed behaviors.

Some examples of species-related stereotypes include, but are not limited to:

* Cats are seen as fickle, but short-tempered and fond of keeping themselves groomed.
* Dragons are seen as arrogant and emotionally turbulent, with a pretentious streak.
* Equines are "size queens", into bondage and pony play.
* Male foxes are frequently gay or bi, overly sexualized and submissive, and are an overexposed choice of character.
* Female foxes and vixens are usually male players, even more overly sexualized, and not bright.
* Red Pandas Desperately try to seek attention, and choose a red panda as an "original" alternative to foxes, just to get attention.
* Gryphons are obsessed fans of Mercedes Lackey fiction and can be capricious.

General

* Is not, nor ever will be, a Mainstream culture.
* Is at best a subculture.
* It is a fetish in general and/or a pathway to anthropomorphic paraphilias.

Appearance or orientation
Medical disorders
** Personality disorder (any/all therians or otherkins.)
* Down Syndrome ("retardation".)
* AIDS (some furries or all LBGT furs.)

Deviancy
Social contribution
* Uneducated, still holding a low prestige job as they get older.
* Educated, still holding a low prestige job as they get older.
* Unemployed/unemployable.
* Majority on disability or other types of welfare assistance (US).

Relationships
* There is no furry on furry normal relationships (e.g. just for love).
* There are no straight relationships in the fandom.
* There are no married couples in the fandom.
* Married furry couples are all childless due to problems/genetics.
* Married furry couple's kids are all brats.

Female gender
* No females in the fandom.
*No attractive females in fandom
* No female artists in the fandom.
* All female furries are either fat and ugly.
* All females are lesbians or transgender/non-binary.

* Slave auctions (Confurence era).

* Dragons are seen as arrogant and emotionally turbulent, with a pretentious streak.
* Unicorns are aristocratic and prideful about their appearance.
* Rabbits are neurotic and paranoid, or are sexually promiscuous, and often enjoy being edible.
* Wolves are seen as ravenous and keen on asserting dominance onto others.
* Huskies are treated in a similar manner to Male Foxes.fact
* Raccoons are seen as antisocial and openly anarchistic.
* Cats are seen as fickle, but short-tempered and fond of keeping themselves groomed.
* Squirrels are seen as energetic and hyperactive.
* Hyenas are seen as brash and shameless.
* Rats are seen as sneaky and content with being dirty.

* Slave auctions (Confurence era).

* Dragons are pretentious, attempt to appear wise and cultured, and often follow a strange form of mysticism. More recently, they've been perceived as being "derpy". If female, they are fangirls of Anne McCaffrey's Pern.
* Unicorns are aristocratic and prideful about their appearance.
* Rabbits are neurotic and paranoid, or are sexually promiscuous, and often enjoy being edible.
* Wolves behave like alpha males, arrogant and expecting to be treated as leaders. Alternately, they are sometimes purported to act like big foxes.
* Huskies are the new foxes, but more submissive.fact
* Raccoons are seen as antisocial and bi-sexual. Some see raccoons as sneaky thieves who steal at every chance they get.
* Cats are seen as clean and sometimes prissy, bordering on the noble class.
* Squirrels are jittery and hyperactive.
* Hyenas are seen as insane, loud, aggressive, overtly sexual.
* Kangaroos are always foot fetishists who have pouches on both genders.
* Rats are sneaky and dirty, and carriers of diseases.

Dragons are a diverse mythological species, rich in lore, appearance, form, color and nature. Although not all dragons have scales or are even entirely reptilian, they are generally classified as scalie or herp within the furry fandom. With such diversity and adaptability to anthropomorphic characterization, the dragon has become one of the most popular phenotypes of furries.

Non-anthro dragons
Full-form, non-anthro dragons come in many shapes and sizes representing their origins from around the world.

* Western Dragons are usually large, leathery-winged, quasi-reptilian or saurian beings. In modern fiction they are sometimes warm-blooded, and reflect influences from contemporary knowledge of dinosaurs. Most have scales and some lay eggs. Variations include but are not limited to:
** Feathered wings
** Fur coat or manes
** Un-scaled hides
* Eastern Dragons are generally long, sinuous, scaly dragons with and/or without wings. Often, they have horns or antlers, and are the type depicted in Chinese or Japanese traditional art. Despite being portrayed with fur a lot in modern times, eastern dragon are originally scaly, and were believed to have the scales of a carp.
* Rare or Atypical Dragons such as Amphipteres or Wyverns - the moniker "Dragon" is applied to a staggeringly large number of creatures, some of which have very little to do with each other.
* Non-traditional or less common permutations, such as Fairy Dragons or even artificial and symbolic creatures - postmodern fantasy and science-fiction has portrayed the dragon as everything from a psychological meme to steampunk robots.

Character-oriented genres like Furry tend to portray non-anthro dragons with additional capabilities and tweaks to make them more accessible as a sentient character who might display human-like behavior. The capacity for human speech is common. It is also not uncommon to see dragons with dexterous, tool-using forefeet. One can find crossovers with dragon-like qualities in species concepts like the monoceros.

Anthro-Dragons / Dragonoides / Draconides
Anthropomorphic dragons, also known as draconids are similar to their full-form cousins, but humanoid or bipedal. Furry fantasy characterizations of this style of dragon may freely combine highly interpretive elements:

* They may or may not have wings. Wings may not be functional for flying, or may be only for gliding.
* Feminine forms (be they female, herm, or otherwise) frequently show mammalian traits such as breasts. Such a character might still be defined as a reptile, or might be conceived more as a mammal with draconic features.
* Legs are often digitigrade, but may be plantigrade.
* Body hair and/or fur is common. It sometimes may be presented as birdlike proto-plumage or down.

In fiction, myth, and character back stories, non-humanoid and humanoid dragons are sometimes two aspects or variations of the same species. It is not uncommon for non-anthro dragons to possess the ability of shapeshifting in order to assume a humanoid form or presented as examples of parallel evolution.

Known furry examples of anthro-dragons include Brian Harp's Dz'isu, AraKaraath from his comic In A Perfect World and Phantomgraph's Dracine.

Wyvern
The wyvern is rendered as a winged reptilian creature. It is distinguished by its possession of only two legs and a single pair of wings. Occasionally, a variant such as the sea-wyvern will possess a fish-like tail. More frequently, however, the wyvern's tail is drawn with a barb or a spade at the tip, which is sometimes considered poisonous.

Draconic character traits
Dragons typically have many character traits ascribed to them. Due to the wide range of mythology and differing perceptions of their personality, there is no definitive guide to draconic characterization. Some classical and popular traits are:

* Hoarding valuable items. Traditionally seen as greed, but sometimes as protection of rarities or items which are valuable in more ways than material riches. Some items are often only of value to the dragon and are collected because of a particular interest or just because it's shiny or caught the dragon's attention.
* In Asian mythology, an appreciation for spirituality and tradition.
* Arrogance, selfishness and a sense of superiority and/or invulnerability.
* Vanity and great attention to appearances, though not necessarily physical.
* Defensive and territorial, preferring the company of other creatures to another dragon.
* A "breath weapon" of some kind, often visualized as the natural or mystical ability to exhale fire. There are many variations, ranging from icy breath to poisonous clouds. It has been suggested that this originates from the Christian idea that dragons (as "serpents" or "wyrms/worms") embody the tempting serpent of Hell, and thus their bellies are gates linked to Hell; whenever the dragon opens this gate, then, hellfire will belch out. However, such portrayal can also be considered a derogatory stereotype.
* Great cycles of sleep and regeneration, where a dragon might vanish for weeks, months, or years to slumber or hibernate.
* Mastery of arcane knowledge, such as alchemy and forms of sorcery or magical lore.

Dragons today
Dragons have occasionally taken on a more humanistic sensibility in modern fiction. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern saga is thought to be the beginning of the modern reconceptualization of the dragon. Particularly within comic books, anime, manga and furry fandom, the dragon as a character or a personal avatar is often employed to add some draconic qualities onto a more human oriented foundation. Dragon characters commonly take on a more benign, playful, and warm persona.

* Non-anthropomorphic dragons are frequently direct allies of heroes and villains, and often serve as their protectors, companions or partners.
* In A Perfect World, the comic strip by AraKaraath, shows dragons as notorious for harassing postal carriers. Common traits include a love of shiny objects, the ability to "lounge" almost anywhere, and a tendency to take a very long view of things.

* Dragon characters are often crafted for appealing or exciting appearances as much as traditional mythological qualities, and combined with present day or science fiction settings in addition to traditional fantasy. Here, the dragon's traditional qualities are interpreted in a new context - for example, dragons might be masters of high technology rather than magic, or intellectuals rather than wizards.
* Dragons which have metaphysical elements may employ more modern ideas such as psionic abilities.
* The dragon might embody many traditional aspects, but for new purposes, such as humor. A good example of a traditional yet humorous and contemporary dragon is Llewellyn, from D.C. Simpson's comic strip Ozy and Millie.
* The theriotype of many therians or otherkin is often a dragon.
<div style="clear:both;"></div>

Multiplayer worlds
Dragon species have been prominent in a number of multiplayer worlds, including Alfandria, Dragon's Shadow MUCK, Loneport MUSH, Faibanx, Ryksyll MOO, Istaria, and Minions of Mirth.
Rats are a species of long-tailed rodents.

Many members of other rodent families, such as pouch rats and pack rats, are called "rats" due to similar appearance, but are not true rats and do not belong to the genus Rattus.cn

The best-known rat species are the Black Rat (black rattus) and the Brown Rat (rattus norvegicus).cn Both are generally known as the Old World rats or true rats, and originated in Asia.

The common species are capable of surviving naturally, although they are often found living with and near humans. While it is possible for modern wild rats to carry diseases, it's not very common. Those living in good environments are typically healthy and robust animals, opposed to ones living in cities (who may have poor diets and and fall prey to parasites) The normal lifespan of a rat ranges from two to five years, and is typically three years. Rats can be found on every continent on the planet, apart from Antarctica.

The 2010’s saw an increase in selection of the Rat as a choice for both original characters and fursonas.

Several fictional species use rats for a base both for appearance and behavior. Examples include Burmecians and Cleyrans from Final Fantasy IX, and Ratonga from II. Each are moderately prevalent in fan works (both by furry artists and non-furry fans).
