Overview
Furry conventions exploded in the 2000's, with over 30 cons starting up. In comparison, the 90's saw 13 cons, all but two of them after 1995. The furry fandom saw a rise in membership both inside and outside the United States. Attitude towards furries on the Internet were mixed in early-mid 2000s, tending toward the negative in 2007 with the "Furry War".

His renowned story hour has since become a fixture of the convention through recent years.

The last iteration of Confurence, is held. Being the first furry convention and the longest running of its time, it would not be surpassed in length by any other convention until Eurofurence's sixteenth iteration in 2010.

2603:9001:5014:FF6D:27C:2DFF:FE73:E2BB:

The Great Auk is a novel written by Allan W. Eckert. Little, Brown & Company first published the novel in 1963.

Eckert wrote a similar novel about the last individual of a species: The Silent Sky: The Incredible Extinction of the Passenger Pigeon, which was published in 1965.

One of the important aspects of Furry culture is species. Each Furry generally picks a species, or invents one, for their character.
Species are chosen for a variety of reasons, ranging from a simple desire to be like that creature, to complex spiritual affinity.

Note that the term species is not necessarily being used here in the strict taxonomic sense. Some of the entries here pertain to a category of animal (e.g. canine, reptile), some refer to a single taxonomic species (e.g. tiger, giraffe), and some refer to animals often regarded as a single type of animal but which in fact encompass multiple species (e.g. fox, squirrel).

Opossum

The opossum, or "possum", is a marsupial, either a member of the taxonomic family Didelphidae native to the Western hemisphere. They are often confused with the possums of Australia and nearby regions, which were named after the opossum due to their similarities.

The most well-known opossum is the Virginia opossum Didelphis virginiana of North America. They are known for hacing shaggy gray fur, humanlike forepaws, naked ears, long naked prehensile tail, and the marsupial pouch (in the case of the female) or the unusual bifurcated penis (in the case of the male).

The opossum has the dubious honor of being one of the best-known roadkill animals, due to the fact that they are nocturnal (drivers are less likely to notice them until too late) and that their first instinct when threatened is to faint and play dead (AKA "playing possum"). The ability to feign being dead is so authentic that they are even capable of emitting a smell reminiscent of rotting flesh to confuse predators into thinking they are actually dead and too rotten to be edible. This habit has led to a legendary folkloric treatment in popular artforms. Despite having a reputation for being vicious, they are actually very reluctant to bite or scratch, but, being masters of the bluff, they will instead hiss aggressively. Although they are often depicted in artwork as hanging from tree limbs by their tails, actual opossums are incapable of doing so; their tails are simply not strong enough. Picking up a live opossum by the tail is likely to cause injury.

Opossum characters
Opossums were used as a cultural stereotype in a certain lesser-known WWII-era Looney Tunes cartoon, and one of Tex Avery's Barney Bear
' cartoons featured one, but other characters are far more recent. A couple of these include Thelma Possum from Nip and Tuck and Frye Opossum from Room For One More, both Southern belle types.

Border Collie

The border collie is a breed of working dog that originated in the border region between Scotland and England. The breed was bred to herd livestock, particularly sheep, and combines intelligence and agility with a hardy constitution. They are moderately popular within the furry fandom after huskies and German Shepherds, probably because of its familiarity, wolflike countenance and striking coloration.

Traits
As working dogs, border collies are selected for herding ability and stamina, resulting in a wide variation in physical appearance. The colouration most commonly associated with the breed is a distinctive black and white, but many other variations exist, including red and white, brown and white, merle and almost pure black.

Border collies are noted for their extremely high level of intelligence and suitability for training. One border collie, Rico, has been demonstrated to have a functional vocabulary of over 200 words. They are also extremely agile, making them good at dog sports.

Border collies possess a 'herding instinct', a modified form of the hunting instinct, causing them to adopt a characteristic herding pose and fix their target with a penetrating stare. The target, originally sheep, may include ducks, cars, children, other dogs or even birds in the sky. Because of their intelligence and desire to work, they may not make good pets for people who can't provide them with enough exercise and mental stimulation. So one who adopts a collie may want to really consider taking on such a workload, though the effects are usually very rewarding. Everyone who happens to own a collie swears by them.

Pingu

:This article is about the television program. For the furry, see Pingu Penguin.

Pingu is a Swiss children's television series about a penguin (the titular Pingu) who lives at the South Pole with his mother, father, and (after her hatching) baby sister Pinga.

Each episode focuses on Pingu, but often features his family or his best friend, Robby the Seal, or other minor characters.

History
Four series, consisting of 104 five-minute episodes in total, were made between 1986 and 1998. The series were directed and animated in claymation by Otmar Gutmann and the stories were written by Dani Gilbert.

A special twenty-minute episode ("Pingu at the Wedding Party") was also produced in 1997, which introduced a family of green penguins and a killer vacuum cleaner.

The series has achieved popularity around the world partly due to the lack of any language-specific dialogue. The main characters communicate only in a honking "penguin language", referred to by fans as "Pinguish" or "Penguinese".
