COVID-19

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

History
First discovered in the Hubei province in China, the disease has spread globally since 2019, resulting in the COVID-19 pandemic, which was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020.

In mid-2021, the delta variant has been detected, and has killed and infected millions worldwide.

Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis
The infection is spread from one person to others by respiratory droplets, which is often produced during coughing and sneezing. Time from exposure to onset of symptoms is generally between two to two weeks, with an average of five days.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Muscle pain, sputum production, and sore throat are less common symptoms. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure. The deaths per the number of diagnosed cases is estimated at between 1% and 5%, but varies by age and other health conditions.

The standard method of diagnosis is by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab or throat swab. The infection can also be diagnosed from a combination of symptoms, risk factors, and a chest CT scan showing features of pneumonia.

Prevention and Management
Recommended measures to prevent the disease include frequent hand washing, maintaining distance from other people and not touching one's face. The use of masks was initially recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers, but not the general public. However, as evidence mounted that people can become infectious prior to displaying symptoms, universal face coverings is now mandatory in several states. Two vaccines have been developed to combat the virus spread and has since been distributed to the general public, which are the Moderna and Pfizer BioTech.

On January 17, 2020, an anonymous 4chan user coined the catchphrase Corona-chan in a /pol/ board thread to describe the coronavirus itself. It announced at the closing ceremonies that they would return for 2021 with the theme "Back to the 90s!", featuring GoH Nightlinez and the creators of Circles.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which developed shortly after 2020 iteration concluded, the previous announcement that ANE would return in 2021 was revised to notify attendees that the 2021 event was cancelled. Included in this announcement was that ANE would instead feature a virtual event in the same month that ANE 2021 was scheduled. This was held from February 19 - 21, 2021, entitled "Anthro New England: Online!", featuring an America Online look-a-like logo for the event. Despite the theme, being postponed until the next year, the 90s theme was still maintained. The main feature of the event was a virtual recreation of the immediate surroundings of the Boston Park Plaza hotel, including portions of Back Bay and the Public Garden. This was created by a handful of ANE Staff members leading up to the event. The event also featured a livestream via the convention's Twitch channel of various DJs performing 90's themed mixes, as well as a virtual dealer's den featuring various previous vendors.

Organization
ANE is hosted and managed by Anthro New England, Inc., which is a 501(c)(7) non-profit corporation registered with the state of Massachusetts. Anthro New England, Inc., is run by a Board of Directors charged with operating the annual convention, facilitating donations for charity, and presenting a positive image of the furry fandom for New England and United States. Anthro New England, Inc. maintains enough funds to continue operations, and donates all other proceeds to charities that fall within the bounds of their mission statement, which reads as follows: "Anthro New England's mission is to raise funds and increase awareness for local charities that connect animals with humans in need, while providing a fun, safe event for anthropomorphic fans to meet and enjoy art, performance, music, and literature."

Anthrocon (AC) is a furry convention held yearly during the summer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Formerly the world's largest furry convention, with an attendance of 7,544 in AC 2017. Later during that same year, it was surpassed by MFF.

History
The convention was founded in 1997 as Albany AnthroCon, which itself an offshoot of the Furry Halloween parties held by Aloyen Youngblood; when attendance pushed triple digits, he decided to book a hotel, and organized it as a convention in 1997 with the aid of local friends, Points, Rigel, and others. In its first year, it had approximately 500 attendees.

In late 1998-1999 the chairmanship of the convention was transferred to Dr. Samuel Conway by Points, and they formally organized the group as Anthrocon Inc., and later renamed the convention to "Anthrocon", and relocated it to Pennsylvania. Its first venue was the Hilton Hotel of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1999 and 2000. Due to a rapid increase in attendees, it was forced to relocate to the larger Adams Mark Hotel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2001, where it became the largest furry convention ever held, with 1,457 attendees.

Attendance continued to grow, and by 2004 it was 2,406. Attendance in 2005 dropped slightly to 2,373, due in part to higher parking fees, and a different and unfamiliar hotel, which was the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in downtown Philadelphia, and possibly due to Hurricane Dennis's effect on the southern United States which closed many airports and prevented people from traveling.

Attendance increased again in 2006 with the move to the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, reaching 2,489. In 2008, total attendance reached 3,390. In 2010, it increased with 4,238 attendees and four official convention hotels. Growth for the convention has historically averaged 14% yearly.

Since 1997, the Anthrocon Charity Auction has donated a total of $240K+ to local charities.

Security for the convention has been provided by the Dorsai Irregulars since 2002.

Current Location and Timeslot
Due to the unforeseen sale and closure of the Adam's Mark Hotel in November 2004, AC chose the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in Philadelphia as the site for 2005 and announced that they would be moving there for the next year. In 2006, Due to scheduling conflicts, the convention had to temporarily leave its normal July timeslot and was held on June 15-18. In 2007, it was held July 5-8 at the same location.

The 2007 move to Pittsburgh was envisioned by AC's Board of Directors before the sale of the Adam's Mark Hotel took place, due to AC's increasing attendance. AC began soliciting people's opinions about moving to Pittsburgh in October 2004. At the time, the convention was already too big for any affordable hotel in Philadelphia, and the Adam's Mark had the most convention space of any hotel of its size in the city before its demolition. The closing of the Adam's Mark simply moved those plans up a year.

While some were opposed to the move, most were supportive of it. Many attendees who supported the move lived out of Pennsylvania that the move made little difference to the trip there.

Leadership
The chairman of the convention is Dr. Samuel Conway (a.k.a. Kagemushi or Uncle Kage by attendees), who oversees AC's operations with the help of staff and volunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks that arise.

Incorporation and Trademarks
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on June 25, 1998 and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650). This classification differs from the 501(c)(3) status of Midwest Furry Fandom and Anthropomorphic Arts and Education, most notably, donations are not tax-deductible to their donors, but in return, the company has more flexibility about its operations, and more leeway to restrict access to non-members, since it's not a club.

Applications to register the word "Anthrocon" and the 'Anthrocon paw' as US trademarks were filed on September 18 and November 12, 2006. According to these filings, the word "Anthrocon" was first used on February 1, 1997, while the paw logo was used from June 30, 1998 onwards.

Trivia
* The choice of Toonseum was made with consultation of the furry community via a LiveJournal post by Rigel. It has so far been the only (fandom-approved) exception to the "animal-related" charity rule.

Attendance in 2005 dropped slightly to 2,373, due in part to higher parking fees, a different and unfamiliar hotel, which was the Wyndham Franklin Plaza in downtown Philadelphia, and possibly due to Hurricane Dennis's effect on the southern United States which closed many airports and prevented people from traveling.

The 2007 move to Pittsburgh was envisioned by Anthrocon's Board of Directors before the sale of the Adam's Mark Hotel took place, due to AC's increasing attendance.

Many attendees who supported the move lived so far away from Pennsylvania that the move made little difference to the trip there.

Leadership
The chairman of the convention is Dr. Samuel Conway (nicknamed Kagemushi or Uncle Kage among attendees), who oversees AC's operations with the help of staff and volunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks that arise.

Incorporation and Trademarks
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on June 25, 1998 and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650). This classification differs from the 501(c)(3) status of Midwest Furry Fandom and Anthropomorphic Arts and Education - most notably, donations are not tax-deductible to their donors, but in return, the company has more flexibility about its operations, and more leeway to restrict access to non-members, since it's not a club.

Mephit Furmeet
The Mephit Furmeet (MFM), is an annual furry convention in Olive Branch, Mississippi, USA, which is just south of Memphis, TN. This convention meets over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Their mascot is a skunk, as the name implies, and its motto is "Welcome home".

Venue
MFM was originally hosted in Memphis, Tennessee at Howard Johnson's Inn (now Econo Lodge) on Sycamore View Road in East Memphis.

From 1998 through 2000, the convention was held at the Holiday Inn Memphis East on Poplar Ave. From 2001 through 2009, it was held at the Holiday Inn Select at Memphis International Airport.

In 2009, it was announced that the next convention would be held at the Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center in Olive Branch, Mississippi, making it the first time the convention would be held outside of the city of Memphis.

Charity
Tiger Haven has been the convention charity for MFM yearly since 2001 and is expected to remain so in the future. Through 2009, MFM has raised more than $100K for Tiger Haven and is their largest contributor. More than $15K was raised for them at 2004. As of 2005, there is an enclosure bearing MFM's name that was funded entirely with donations from the convention attendees.

History
Started by local Memphis furry GrowlTiger in 1997, MFM originated from a small pizza party gathering hosted in a local Howard Johnson's. Since then, the chairs organizing the convention have included:
* GrowlTiger: MFM - 1999
* Kodian: MFM 4
* Tyger Cowboy: MFM 5 - 2011
Since 2012, MFM has been led by a team of five co-directors consisting of Tyger Cowboy, Alexander Katz, Goliath, Blue Heeler SunFire, and Bunny Mickley.

Scenes from MFM 4 has appeared in the documentary Fans and Freaks from Nashville, Tennessee area directors Stephen and Suzie Lackey.

In MFM 5, a surprise guest appearance was made by Dr. Samuel "Uncle Kage" Conway, disguised as "The Great Unknown Furry".

In 2002, part of the convention space was unexpectedly "borrowed" by the Transportation Security Administration.

In 2005, the hotel was shared with displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina, with convention attendees donating both money and resources to those affected by the catastrophe. There were over 600 people attending in that year and attendance was held near that level through 2011.
