Retrieved February 22, 2019.</ref> (a.k.a."break[ing] the magic"), refers to actions taken by a fursuiter or cosplayer that deviate performance conventions in a way that interferes with viewers' suspension of disbelief, which is "the magic". When the magic is ruined, the viewer is reminded that they are seeing a costume with a person inside roleplaying a fictional character. The behavior can be out of character or break the fourth wall.

Methods
* Allowing one's skin to be visible while wearing a fursuit when not appropriate for the character.
** Can be done by Poodling by wearing the head, tail, and/or paws (hands).
* When the jaw of the fursuit does not move with the wearer's.
* When the fursuit wearer's face can be seen through the fursuit mouth at a certain angle when it's open.
* Removing certain parts of the fursuit or cosplay in public.

Association with Furry Fandom
Within the furry fandom, ruining the magic can be frowned upon. Sometimes it is necessary to do so for safety reasons, like preventing overheating. Due to these concerns, most conventions designate a "headless lounge" to accommodate breaks for the performer, where they can de-suit to cool-off.
