A hybrid (biology-wise) is the offspring resulting from combining the qualities of two organisms of different breeds, varieties, species, or genera through sexual reproduction ("crosses").

Etymology
The term hybrid is derived from the Latin word hybrida, meaning "mongrel", which was specifically used for such crosses as a tame sow and a wild boar. The term became popular in the English language in the 19th century, though examples of its use have been found from the early 17th century.

Conspicuous hybrids are popularly identified with portmanteau names, starting in the 1920s with the breeding of a tiger/lion hybrids (ligers and tigons).

Description
Generally, hybridization means that each cell has the genetic material from two different organisms, whereas an individual where some cells are derived from a different organism is called a chimera. Hybrids are not always intermediated between their parents (such as in blending inheritance) but can show hybrid vigor, sometimes growing larger or taller than either parent.

The concept of a hybrid is interpreted differently in animal and plant breeding, where there is interest in the individual parentage. In genetics, attention is focused on the numbers of chromosomes, while in taxonomy, a key question is how closely related the parent species are.

Based on their "parent" lineage, hybrids themselves can be fecund (Dzomo) or sterile (Dzo).

Hybrid and furry
Furry characters, fursonas, or OCs, can be, as the same as in mainstream culture, hybrids of two biologically possible animal crosses, such as a coyote and a wolf, commonly identified as a coywolf, resulting in ligers, wolfdogs, coydogs, and tigons, among others.

But thanks to ideas/imagination not being impeded by logical biology, furry variations in hybridization are limitless, regardless of actual fertility facts. So, while authors can/have created characters in scenarios abiding by mainstream genetics, crosses of every possible variation are present in the fandom thanks to its creative community. This includes crosses between:

* Actual "biological cousins" - Such as a fox and a wolf, commonly identified in the furry fandom as a folf (or pholph).
* Between not related biological species - Those that can not interbreed, such as a tiger and a skunk, this cross popularized by furry artist Max Black Rabbit's popular character, Zig Zag. Other species such animals crossbreed with include reptiles, birds, insects or fish.

* Werewolf hybrids - In the fandom, lycanthrope crosses do occur between related animals or species, with one being the "base" animal (the human in the werewolf scenario).
* Sometimes the cross is between not biologically related animals or species, in some concepts two animals that are diametrically opposite of each other, like a meek-looking bunny and/or a cute sheep transforming into an apex predator like a wolf, sometimes with a twist (I.e. werewolves still exhibiting prey animals' apprehensions after change).
* Synthetic biology with organic lifeforms - Like xenobots with any animal (like primagens, but not anthroids or inanimorphs).<ref>Category robot characters page on Wikifur. * Werewolf hybrids - In the fandom, lycanthrope crosses do occur between related animals or species, with one being the "base" animal (the human in the werewolf scenario).
* Sometimes the cross is between not biologically related animals or species, in some concepts two animals that are diametrically opposite of each other, like a meek-looking bunny and/or a cute sheep transforming into an apex predator like a wolf, sometimes with a twist (I.e. werewolves still exhibiting prey animals' apprehensions after change).<ref>Strollin' Through the Woods One Day... page on Fur Affinity.
