Etymology
The etymology of the Scots word kelpie is uncertain, but it may be derived from the Gaelic calpa, colpach or cailpeach, meaning "heifer" or "colt". The first recorded use of the term to describe a mythological creature, then spelled kaelpie, appears in the manuscript of an ode by William Collins, composed some time before 1759 and reproduced in the ransactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh of 1788.

History and description
The origins of the kelpie are believed to be rooted in human sacrifices to the water gods however this concept eventually died out and the story of the kelpie was then used to keep children from playing too near to lochs and dangerous rivers. It also encouraged women to be wary of good looking strangers. It is usually described as a horse-like creature, that is able to adopt a human form. Some accounts state that the kelpie retains its hooves when appearing as a human, leading to its association with the Christian idea of Satan as alluded to by Robert Burns in his 1786 poem "Address to the Devil".

Gargoyles are fantastical beings derived from representations of creatures constructed as water spouts on buildings throughout the ages, particularly medieval cathedrals. The term is derived from the French word gargouille for throat or gullet, but has since been applied to purely artistic decorations. Gargoyles have been found in multiple forms since antiquity and usually take the form of grotesque animals or demonic figures, winged or otherwise, their presence was also thought to ward off evil spirits.

Disney's Gargoyles
Gargoyles also obtained fame in the Disney series Gargoyles, created by Greg Weisman and aired from October 24, 1994 to February 15, 1997. This series featured a number of gargoyle characters and was targeted at an older audience than usual Disney productions, gaining much critical acclaim and attracting a number of big names for voice acting of the series. A following has arisen around this television series and fan art and fan fiction is not uncommon. An annual convention, Gathering of the Gargoyles, celebrates this series and is a popular event with some furry fans. Many members of this fandom have in turn crossed over to the furry fandom, sometimes with gargoyle fursonas.

Gargoyle fursonas
Gargoyles in the anthropomorphic fandom are relatively rare, but some do exist both online and off. Korul Al-Wassar is a gargoyle fursuit created by Andrew Pidcock, and on Second Life, the avatar creator Whinge Languish has popularized a gargoyle form so that gargoyle fursonas may exist there.

A Chimera is a fire-breathing beast from Greek mythology, traditionally considered to have the body and the head of a lion, the other head of a goat and a snake for tail. Mythologically, it was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna.

In biology, the term is sometimes used to describe a single organism with genetically distinct cells from two different species. Theoretically, furries can be considered chimeric with their combination of animal and human traits that could come from different species, although this would depend on the origin stories of particular characters: for example, a species that evolved on some other world would not be a chimera, nor might one created by magic. Recoms are inarguably biological chimeras.
While the most famous example comes from Egyptian mythology, sphinxes have also appeared in Greek mythology. Sphinxes are commonly found in some areas of the fandom, especially in taur and nonmorphic furry artists, such as Roy D. Pounds II and Arania.
The sphinxes of Egypt are mythical creatures, often depicted as guardians. They often have varying heads of animals, such as rams and falcons. The largest and most famous sphinx is the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt. While the sphinx has origins in Egypt, the name itself is Greek.
Sphinxes only appear once in Greek mythology. The Sphinx was a daughter of Echidna and of Typhon
She sat in front of the city Thebes where she would ask each passerby history's most famous riddle:

If anyone failed to answer, she would strangle them. The word "sphinx" comes from the Greek word sphigx meaning "to strangle." The famous Oedipus solved the riddle: man who crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and walks with a cane in old age.
The Sphinx, defeated, threw herself from her rock in fury and died.

Sphinxes by other names have appeared in many other cultures, including the Shri Narasimha, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, a Hindu deity whose purpose is to destroy evil on earth.
Early artistic depictions of "sphinxes" from the South Asian subcontinent often show Greek influence. However, in far eastern Asia, there are sphinxes that show independent development.
Leucrotta, also known as Pachycrocuta, is a furry artist who lives in Idaho. His fursona is a hyena. who has worked as a staff member for Further Confusion. He has characters active on Tapestries, but is currently hoping to cut down on his online and caffeine addictions. He is a former contributor to the Huzzah! APA, and credits a large range of inspirations for his art style - from wildlife art to the comics of Enrico Marini and Mitch Byrd. A long-time tabletop gamer, he is particularly inspired and delighted by the wide range of only-vaguely-coherent monsters in D&D, including his namesake animal.

The name derives from a mythological creature, the leucrotta, a part-stag, part-lion, part-badger animal that supposedly lived in India and which could mimic human voices. Leucrotta may be inspired by reports of spotted hyenas, and have inspired a slightly different, malevolent monster in the Dungeons and Dragons game.

Panther is used as a generic species name to describe a leopard or jaguar, especially an individual who is melanistic, i.e. a black panther. Such individuals are an example of a mutation, not a separate species. Their spots can be seen in the right light, but essentially panthers look entirely black (or, at least, very dark brown or grey).

Panther is also sometimes used to refer to a cougar or mountain lion (a species which has no confirmed melanistic variant), particularly if it is a member of the subspecies commonly known as the Florida panther.

The above describes the most common usages of the term "panther", but etymologically speaking it could be properly applied to any member of the genus Panthera (which would exclude the cougar since it belongs to a different genus). Indeed it is sometimes used to refer generically to any big cat of that genus, although "pantherine" can be used instead.

The white panther is a rare occurrence, which is used for individuals, like a white cougar, white leopard or white jaguar. They may be the result of albinism (lack of pigmentation) or leucism (partial lack of pigmentation). Black panthers in comparison are the result of melanism. Unlike black panthers, white panthers have not been selectively bred.

On WikiFur, "panther" characters are categorized as Leopard characters or Jaguar characters as appropriate, or as Feline characters if the character's species is unclear.

Jaguar is the common name of Panthera onca, a big cat of Central and South America. It is arguably the most impressive carnivorous mammal of the western hemisphere (not counting extinct forms), being larger and stockier even than the Old World leopard, with a shorter tail and larger head. Its coat bears a similar spotted marking to that of the leopard but with larger rosettes with spots, and a melanistic or black phase, sometimes commonly called a panther, is also known to exist.

The jaguar figured heavily in the religions of Central American peoples such as the Maya, where it was associated with the god of war.

As of this writing, out of the 52 species (including "other") represented on pounced.org, the jaguar is in the lower 20th percentile in popularity as a phenotype.

The jaguar's powerful bite allows it to pierce the carapaces of turtles and tortoises, and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of mammalian prey between the ears to deliver a fatal blow to the brain.

Diet and behavior
The jaguar is a carnivore and apex predator. The jaguar is an ambush predator, it will slowly walk down forest paths in search of food. It preys on capybara, anteaters, deer, peccaries, armadillos, agoutis, tapirs, and reptiles like turtles, tortoises, lizards, caimans and crocodiles. Jaguars are also good swimmers, which also aids in their hunts.

The Lion (Panthera leo) is a mammal of the family Felidae. Many who have lion fursonas today originally came from the The Lion King fandom before joining the furry fandom, whilst others are simply inspired by the movie.

Lions are predatory carnivores who live in family groups, called prides, consisting of related females, their cubs of both sexes, and one or more unrelated males who mate with the adult females. Male lions within the pride form a coalition. The females do the hunting for the pride while the males are largely occupied with maintaining the borders of their territory.

They are the only members of the cat family to display sexual dimorphism, the males have manes, while the females don't. Some male lions can have no manes, or a weak ones. These are called maneless lions.

Mating behavior
Lions are one of the most sexually active cats, another popular reason for choosing lion fursonas. During a female's oestrus cycle, a male and female will mate unabated for 5-7 days every 10 to 20 minutes. However, it takes 6-9 oestrus cycles for the female to become pregnant.

Subspecies
There are several subspecies of lion, most of which once existed or currently exist on the continent of Africa. The Asiatic Lion, or Panthera leo persica lives in present-day Gir Forest region of India. The remaining subspecies of lion, along with their scientific names and habitat, are the following:

* Panthera leo azandica - North East Congo lion
* Panthera leo bleyenberghi - Katanga lion
* Panthera leo hollisteri - Congo lion
* Panthera leo krugeri - South African lion
** White lion (mutation of Kruger subspecies)
* Panthera leo leo - Barbary lion (Morocco to Egypt); Extinct in 1922.
* Panthera leo massaicus - Masai lion or Serengeti lion or a subspecies of Masai lion
* Panthera leo melanochaita - Cape lion; Extinct in 1860.
* Panthera leo nubica - East African lion or Masai lion
* Panthera leo persica - The Asiatic lion
* Panthera leo roosevelti - Abyssinian lion
* Panthera leo senegalensis - West African lion, or Senegal lion
* Panthera leo somaliensis - Somali lion
* Panthera leo verneyi - Kalahari lion

Barbary lions were the largest of the lion sub-species, and were kept by Roman emperors - who ordered the capture of literally thousands of individuals to fight in the gladiator arenas.

Despite its popular moniker of "King of the Jungle" which is more appropriate to the Asiatic lion, the African lion is an animal of the open plains. As a result, it has been the target of extensive poaching and is now a threatened species with significant populations being limited to national parks in Tanzania and South Africa, as well as the Gir Forest.

Animorphs was a book series created by K.A. Applegate and published by the Scholastic Corporation, running from 1996 to 2001. There were 64 books in all, including 54 'main universe' books, four Megamorphs (double-sized books), four standalone novels, and two choose-your-own-adventure. In addition, there were Animorphs Transformers, video games, and a short-lived TV show on Nickelodeon.

Premise
In the series, the main enemy was the Yeerks, a species of mind-controlling parasitic slug-like aliens who enter the brain through the ear of their hosts. In order to fight the Yeerks, a group of five young humans is given the gift of shapeshifting by a dying alien named Elfangor.

The shapeshifting ability allows these humans, who adopt the name Animorphs for themselves, to absorb DNA or genetic material by touch, and then transform into that animal. They can only remain shapeshifted for a maximum of two hours, however; after this, they are unable to return to their human form as the change is permanent. This fate befalls one of the main characters Tobias in the first book and his difficulties with being stuck as an animal are explored over the series.

The six main characters are Jake (signature morph: tiger), Cassie (signature morph: wolf), Marco (signature morph: gorilla), Rachel (signature morph: elephant until book seven at which point it alternates between an elephant and grizzly bear), Tobias (signature morph: red-tailed hawk), and Aximili (an Andalite, a sort of psychic deer-scorpion taur alien). Aximili was rescued from the remnants of an Andalite Dome Ship in the fourth book. In the next (fifth) book, Marco discovers that his mother (sometimes called Eva, other times called Laura) is Visser One. In book six, Jake accidentally falls into a Yeerk Pool and ends up with the Yeerk, named Temrash, who used to be in his brother Tom's head in his. At the very end, Jake sees a Big Red Eye, who isn't named until the twenty-sixth book. The fanbase at this point was already very strong and was able to persuade Applegate to bring back the B.R.E., as the fans had started calling him. Another fan-induced idea happened in books five and thirteen when a member of the usually dumb Hork-Bajir "started talking like he had a Harvard education", as Marco put it in book five. Eight books later, a name was given to this type of Hork-Bajir: Seer. A fan named Erin K. Dover had persuaded Applegate to use intelligent Hork-Bajir.
(Note: The original term Dover used was Hork-Bajir Thinker, not Hork-Bajir Seer.)

In the twenty-third book, it is discovered that Aximili, or Ax, as the others call him, is Tobias' uncle, although the fans had known this ever since the Andalite Chronicles came out.

Media
Television
From 1998 to 1999, a television series based on the books, aired on Nickelodeon in the United States and YTV in Canada. This series makes several changes to the morphs from the books, Rachel's first morph is a cat, whereas in the book it is an elephant. Also, in this version, Tobias' hawk morph is a Harris's hawk, rather than a red-tailed hawk. Similarly, Rachel's fighting morph is a lion, as opposed to an elephant and grizzly bear in the books, while Marco's morph is a wolf as opposed to a gorilla in the books.

Video games
Animorphs: Know the Secret is an action-adventure game, released for Microsoft Windows. Developed by Gigawatt Studios and published by Infogrames, the players can switch control between four of the Animorphs (Cassie, Jake, Marco and Rachel). They will explore different environments searching for clues as to why the activities of Yeerks have gone down. The Animorphs have access to a number of specific forms they can change into, which can increase by finding more animals on the way.

Animorphs: Shattered Reality is a platform video game, released for the Sony PlayStation. Developed by SingleTrac, it revolves around four of the Animorphs trying to find pieces of the Continuum Crystal before Visser Three does.

A Game Boy Color game was also published by Ubisoft.
