Shere Khan is a tiger character that first appeared in the book The Jungle Book by the author Rudyard Kipling, who was born with a withered leg and nicknamed Lungri (The Lame One) by his mother. Shere Khan was aggressive, arrogant and self-centered and saw himself as the rightful king of the jungle. The only one who looked up to him was Tabaqui the jackal. The worst thing Shere Khan knows are human people and when he finds out about Mowgli, he sends out to get his paws on him. But staying in his way are the bear Baloo and the panther Bagheera. Shere Khan has a big weakness and that is his great fear of fire.

Disney's The Jungle Book
Disney animated their very own version of Kipling's book which basically have the same plot and characters with small alternations. Shere Khan does not show any signs of being born with a withered leg and the jackal Tabaqui does not show up anywhere. But Shere Khan is still the villain of the story and is out to get Mowgli. The Jungle Book is one of Disney's most loved classic animated movies.

Other Animations
There was once also an animated series that had appeared in some European countries airing in the mid-90's, mixing in characters from both The Lion King and the Jungle Book, where Shere Khan was bossing around a wimpy Striped Hyena and was out to get Simba to put an end on him and become the king of the jungle. This was not animated by the Disney company but took a lot of ideas and character interpretations from it. It was told to be animated in France or Italy.

"Childhood"
As a cub, Shere Khan was friends with Baloo, Bagheera, King Louie, Hathi, and especially Kaa. But however, he was pretty egotistical and cocky, which often led to his friends bailing him out sometimes. The group went on many adventures, but at some undetermined time, Shere Khan had changed and he became mean and a vicious predator, feared by all the members of the jungle. Shere Khan then lost all his friends, who became his enemies from that moment forward.

Name fame
Since Shere Khan's popularity it became common to name tigers after him. Both plushies, wild tigers, and real tigers in zoological parks.fact But behind the name, Shere Khan was named after a king of the Khan clan which were living in parts of Asia.fact

Disney's Tale Spin
In 1990 Disney released the series Tale Spin where most of the loved characters of the Jungle Book appear with more humanoid characteristics. In this version, Khan, who originally appeared in Part II of the four-part pilot miniseries for the show, Plunder and Lightning, is depicted as being neither good nor evil. He is the multi-millionaire businessman and president of Khan Industries, a company which employs mostly felines. He is mostly just concerned with his company meeting its goals (even if it means someone has to get hurt in the process), he will occasionally dabble in illegal operations, such as when he secretly paid the Air Pirates to attack his refineries and steal his oil so that he could raise gas prices.

Despite this, Khan has a deep code of honor. He always repays his debts and he never goes back on a deal with anyone... but he'll still exploit loopholes in order to defeat his adversaries. This was demonstrated when Baloo saved Khan's life and in return a grateful Khan offered to give Baloo anything he wanted. Although at first Khan was perfectly willing to give Baloo whatever he asked for, Baloo's ridiculous demands soon grew on Khan's nerves, and he had his henchmen kidnap Baloo and hold him for ransom, in order to teach him a lesson. Kit and Rebecca were forced to sell everything Baloo had acquired from Khan to come up with the ransom money. The henchmen then gave the money to their boss following Baloo's release. Thus, Khan won in the end without (technically) going back on his deal with Baloo.

Scar (also known as Taka) is the main antagonist of The Lion King and a minor antagonist in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. He was Simba's uncle Zira's husband Vitani's and Nuka's father Kovu 's adoptive father and Mufasa's younger brother. Unlike his brother, Scar is small and thin, and his mane is black. There is a scar over his left eye. He is voiced by Jeremy Irons in the English version of the movie.

Childhood
In his youth, Scar was known by the name of "Taka"--Swahili slang for "trash" "want" or "dirt" as the younger son of Ahadi and Uru. In the book A Tale of Two Brothers, Taka had become upset when he learned that his older brother Mufasa was chosen to be king over himself, a decision which caused Taka much sadness and anger which distanced him from his father and older brother. Over time, Taka came to resent Ahadi for favoring Mufasa and for choosing kingly duties over spending time with his sons. When Taka was an adolescent, he went on a daily patrol with Mufasa and Ahadi. While patrolling the Pride Lands, the three ran into a baboon named Rafiki, who was being plagued by the trio of hyenas named Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. Although Taka acted bored and commented that they should have let the baboon die, Ahadi welcomed Rafiki into the Pride Lands and let him spend the night at Pride Rock. While Mufasa stayed by his father's side throughout the ordeal, Taka wandered off, feeling unconcerned with his father's doings. Later that night, Taka set a cobra on Mufasa, hoping to kill his brother in his sleep, but before that did any damage Rafiki serenaded the reptile. The following day, after the attempted murder Ahadi had promised to take his 2 sons on a hunting trip, but a group of angry Pride Landers had stalled him, and he was forced to cut the hunting trip short. Though Mufasa understood why his father had made that decision, Taka reacted with outrage and accused his father of always finding other things to do when they were supposed to spend time together. In answer to his son's protests, Ahadi attempted to explain that his brother Mufasa understood the pressures of ruling a kingdom, but Taka's temper only flared, and he accused Ahadi of favoring Mufasa. Despite the young lion's animosity, Ahadi decided to pursue his kingly duties, leaving Taka alone to hunt with Mufasa.

Before the hunt began,Taka flees to talk with the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, where he hatches a plan to make Mufasa look like a fool, believing that if Mufasa appeared inferior to Taka, Ahadi would rescind on his decision to appoint Mufasa as heir. Taka lures Mufasa to the waterhole, where an antagonist Buffalo, named Boma, is hoarding all the water supply for himself. When Mufasa tries to reason with Boma, Taka interjects with an ultimatum: and told Boma that he should either clear out by order of the King, or challenge Mufasa to a fight. Boma becomes enraged and attacks Mufasa, but Mufasa is rescued by Rafiki. Taka, only laughed hilariously at his brother's fear by rolling on the ground until that smile wiped off his face when the other members of his herd, attacked the young lion and gave him his scar. Before he is killed, Ahadi appears just in time with the other animals to stop the fight. And an unconscious Taka was taken back to Pride Rock with the help of an elephant, where Rafiki cared for him until he was patched up enough to talk after he found the scar on his face which it will never fully heal and he will carry a scar with him for the rest of his life--,once recovered, Taka only admitted he wanted to get Mufasa in trouble and get even with Ahadi for breaking his promise, and Ahadi warned his son to keep his anger at bay. At first Taka was angry, but then softens up and accepts his fathers words. Where Taka then asked his father to be called "Scar" from now on as a sign of his foolishness to which he then promises not to forget what happened that day and his family agrees even though Ahadi is relieved that his sons are safe.

In his youth, when Mufasa was appointed as the king, his younger brother Scar was tasked with being the leader the Lion Guard before Kion, and as the leader and the fiercest member of the Lion Guard, Scar was gifted with a powerful roar called the Roar of the Elders. For when Scar roared he summoned the Great Kings of the Past, to roar along with him. But alas, the power got to Scar's head, and since he got that gift from the Kings of the Past, he thought that he should be more worthy of being king himself better than his older brother, Mufasa. So Scar planned to employ the rest of his Lion Guard to help him take down Mufasa, by using the Roar of the Elders. But when the rest of the Lion Guard refused to help aid him in his plot, he began to betray his own Lion Guard and then Scar destroyed them with the power of the Roar, which he made his ancestors angry, and costed him its use. After they saw Scar using his powers for evil, the Kings of the Past removed the Roar from Scar, and thus lost his power as the Roar of the Elders is not meant to be used for evil.

Adulthood
spoiler
Scar's jealousy of Mufasa carried over into his adulthood. During Mufasa's reign, Scar became an aloof pridal member whose presence seemed tolerated by most.

When Simba was born--quelling any chances of Scar gaining the throne--Scar's envy grew. He began to scheme ways of killing off his nephew and brother. It was Scar who tricked Simba into venturing to the Elephant Graveyard. There, Simba; his betrothed, Nala; and the majordomo, Zazu were almost killed by the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. They were rescued by the timely arrival of Mufasa, which angered Scar. Once Mufasa had taken the others out of the Elephant Graveyard, Scar went back, and with the hyenas, he discussed his plans to kill Mufasa and Simba both.

Not long after the incident at the Elephant Graveyard, Scar lured Simba into the Gorge by telling him that his father had a surprise for him. He left Simba at the bottom of the Gorge and snuck off to signal the hyenas, who were waiting with a wildebeest herd on the cliffs above. The hyenas forced the wildebeests into a stampede that charged into the Gorge, right towards Simba.

While Simba ran for his life, Scar returned to Pride Rock and told Mufasa that Simba was in danger. Mufasa rushed to his son's aid and succeeded in getting Simba out of the way of the herd, but when he tried to climb to safety himself, Scar intercepted him on the cliff face. Mufasa pleaded for his brother's help, but Scar instead flung him off the cliff. Mufasa was trampled to death by the wildebeest.

When Simba returned to the bottom of the Gorge and found the body of Mufasa, Scar guilted Simba into believing that he was responsible for the death of his father and urged him to run away. Simba did so, and Scar sent the hyenas after him. However, Simba managed to escape into a patch of thorns, and the hyenas left him for dead.

Scar returned to Pride Rock and delivered the news that Mufasa and Simba were both dead. With no other heirs in place, Scar was able to claim the throne.

Reign
spoiler
Scar's first order of business as new king was to give the hyenas free range of the Pridelands. He also banned his brother's name because Scar did want anybody to know he was his brother's murderer.

Specific events during Scar's reign are sketchy at best. It is speculated that during this time, he fathered Nuka and Vitani with Zira, though it has been confirmed that Vitani and Nuka are his cubs. Even Zira and the two cubs appear in a cameo of The Lion King.

Scar's rule lasted for quite a long time--up until Simba's ascension to adulthood. During that time, thanks to Scar's irresponsible management, the Pridelands became over-hunted and barren. The pride members began to voice their desire to follow the herds to greener, more prosperous areas, but Scar would not listen. Food became so scarce that even the hyenas--Scar's avid supporters--began to murmur against him.

During this time, Nala fled the pride. Some speculate that her reasons for leaving stemmed from a confrontation she had with Scar, in which Scar attempted to make her his queen. This idea is supported by The Lion King on Broadway show, in which Scar makes overtures towards Nala during the song The Madness of King Scar. However, when Nala explains her escape to Simba in the movie, she cites a desire to "find help" as her reason for leaving the pride.

When Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed complained to Scar about the lionesses not hunting, Scar demanded an explanation from Sarabi, whom he had demoted from queen to huntress. Sarabi tried to explain to him that the herds had moved and that the pride should leave Pride Rock, but again Scar refused. Enraged, Sarabi compared Scar to Mufasa, and Scar struck her across the face. In that moment, Simba appeared and confronted Scar. It was then that he learned the truth of Mufasa's death, and when the lionesses heard, they rallied around Simba. The hyenas backed Scar, and a battle ensued.

Simba chased Scar up to the pinnacle of Pride Rock, where Scar pleaded for his life, telling Simba that the hyenas were the ones who plotted Mufasa's death. After that, Simba says to him "Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie". Simba agreed to spare Scar if he would "run away and never return". Scar said those same words to the younger Simba after murdering his brother years ago. However, Scar opted to attack Simba instead. In the struggle, Scar was flung off of Pride Rock. There, the hyenas--who had heard him try to slough the blame of Mufasa's death off on them--turned on Scar and killed him. Scar was also burned by the fire that surrounded the hyenas.

Legacy
In the second movie, Simba's Pride, it is alleged that before his death, Scar used to father Nuka with Zira before he died. Some speculate that Vitani is also the offspring of this pairing, but it has been confirmed. Despite having a cub of his own flesh and blood, Scar "hand-picked" Kovu--another one of Zira's offspring--as his heir before his death. In Simba's Pride, Nuka reveals that--despite a striking resemblance to Scar--Kovu is not Scar's real son.

After Scar's death, Zira and some of her fellow lionesses were banished from the Pridelands by Simba. They became known as the Outlanders, and they remained loyal to Scar. This has raised some controversy, because in The Lion King, all the lionesses fought on Simba's side.
spoiler
In Simba's Pride, Simba relives his father's death in a dream. In this dream, Simba finds Mufasa at the edge of a cliff. Simba reaches out to grab his paw but Scar appears and prevents him. Mufasa disappears into the stampede below. Simba looks up at Scar, and Scar grabs his paw. Scar then turns into Kovu, and throws Simba off the cliff. Simba wakes up before he hits the ground.
