All dinosaurs are known to be terrestrial, with flight developing in theropods around the Middle Jurassic. There are no known marine dinosaurs, although trace fossil evidence suggests some species could swim well. The ancient marine reptiles, ichthyosaurs, and plesiosaurs are, contrary to popular belief, not dinosaurs, and are in fact more closely related to modern lizards than to dinosaurs.

===Skin and coloration===

Exceptional preservation is required to preserve anything other than bone and teeth. This is exceptionally rare, but, despite this, a large number of theropod dinosaurs have been discovered with extensive downy feathers covering their whole bodies. They also had have been shown to have long display feathers on the forelimbs, the tail ends, backs of their heads, and the back of the hips (depending on the species). It is, however, becoming more apparent that possibly all theropod dinosaurs had feathers. Some ceratopsians have also been discovered with 'quill' like structures along with their hides. It is now being considered that quill-like structures evolved in early archosaurs and that the 'fuzz' on pterosaurs is related to both the ceratopsian quills and the theropod feathers. Preserved skin samples of some ornithopods and sauropods suggest that they at least partially lost these features and had a tough scaly hide.

The color of dinosaurs has long been a heated debate. Until very recently, it was impossible to determine the actual colors of a dinosaur. However, a new technique has been developed to accurately determine the color of feathered dinosaurs. This has so far only been used to completely establish the colors of the dinosaur ''Anchiornis huxleyi''<ref>[http://news.nationalgeographic.co.uk/news/2010/01/100127-dinosaurs-color-feathers-science/o/ Article on ''Anchiornis huxleyi''.]</ref>. Since this technique can only be used on samples with exceptional preservation, there is still a wide scope for coloration among many groups of dinosaurs. ==Extinction==

Although the dinosaur lineage still exists today in birds, dinosaurs underwent a massive extinction event approximately 65.5 million years ago. Their diversity was greatly reduced, with the loss of all ornithischians, all sauropods, and most of the theropods. The extinction occurred at the end of the Late Cretaceous (also the end of the Mesozoic). The extinction event is commonly known as the KT event (K representing Cretaceous and T representing Tertiary, which has since been renamed as the Paleogene) and it greatly affected many other groups too. Pterosaurs, mosasaurs, pliosaurs, plesiosaurs, belemnites, ammonites, and many others were all wiped out and plantic forams, calcareous nanofossils, land plants, and rudist bivalves were all severely affected. There is still heated debate about the actual cause of the extinction event(s). The paleontological community is roughly equally divided among it. Research into the Deccan Traps is still ongoing. The currently accepted 'middle ground' is that it was probably a combination of events that lead to the final decline and extinction of these taxa.

There are many dinosaur [[character]]s present within the [[furry fandom]] as a popular [[scalie]] choice. The majority of these tend to be theropod dinosaur characters and are almost always based on the Jurassic Park misrepresentation of a ''Velociraptor'' with some feathers and quills stuck on. They also tend to be described as [[cold-blooded]], due to a general misconception. Characters based on other species of dinosaurs are rare and complete [[fursona]]s based on them are even rarer.

In an attempt to expand public ideas of dinosaur character creation, [[Palaeofox]] developed the character 'Pecky'. Pecky is a ''Troodon formosus'' and so is somewhat similar morphological to a ''Velociraptor'', but is more slender with a narrower snout and was probably an [[omnivor]]e. His aim in developing this character was to allow furries to see that there are many different species of dinosaur they could base a character on, even if they specifically like the 'theropod look'.

Epidexipteryx, smallest, non avian dinosaur, is roughly about 20-25 cm. While the smallest of the lizards, Sphaerodactylus, is not longer than 20 millimeters. And it is known shy mammals and reptiles survived the KT extinction. Extinction it self was a long, and painful process, it didn't happen just in a night. Small mammals had plenty of food to eat in form of small land arthropods, while cold blooded reptiles required much less food to keep up their metabolism unlike they're warm blooded dinosaur contemporaries. Meteor just finished dinosaurs off, who by the end of Cretaceous we're a dying dynasty. I am grateful for fixing this article... For me, a huge dino fan, having correct and accessible information in fandom-related source is important. It's easier to describe why via the example of striped hyenas: they are not well known compared to spotted hyenas and are very different from them. But in role-playing, people tend to assume that striped hyenas are just spotted with stripes instead of spots. It's very rare that one sees correct representation of a striped hyena, and for hyena fans like myself it's very unfortunate. The same is true for dinosaurs, especially raptors.

Excuse me, but, in what century are editors living? It is obvious by they're anatomy and habitat that the animals we're completely warm blooded. It has been proved that even large sauropods such as Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus would have no problem being warm blooded. Much unlike retaining a roughly lizard-like form, written in the erroneous article. Talking about lizards, whats the shit about ranging from the size of the small lizard? Epidexipteryx, smallest, non avian dinosaur, is roughly about 20-25 cm. While the smallest of the lizards, Sphaerodactylus, is not longer than 20 millimeters. And it is known shy mammals and reptiles survived the KT extinction. Extinction it self was a long, and painful process, it didn't happen just in a night. Small mammals had plenty of food to eat in form of small land arthropods, while cold blooded reptiles required much less food to keep up their metabolism unlike they're warm blooded dinosaur contemporaries. Meteor just finished dinosaurs off, who by the end of Cretaceous we're a dying dynasty. I've been snooping around for a guide to properly reference the stuff I have put down and I can't find how to do it properly/understand some of the instructions. The majority of the information was taken from 'THE DINOSAURIA' 3rd edition, by David b. Weishampel, Peter Dodson and Halszka Osmólska, or my own lecture notes (Dr. Dave Martill). The extinction information is from my lecture notes and conversations I've had with lecturers. I guess they would be recorded as 'Peers Coms' in that case? Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he has been drawing [[anthropomorphic]] characters from a very young age, and continuing almost non-stop since then. Like many in the fandom, his favorite art subjects were [[canid]]s and the occasional [[feline]] popping up. As time progressed, he came to prefer [[reptile]]s, [[dinosaur]]s in particular, which currently make up the vast majority of his work.

He later discovered the furry fandom, which led him to attend his first [[convention]], [[Confurence]] 8. Certain events during and after the con prompted him to move into Colorado in 1997. He settled in the Denver metropolitan area two years later, and lives there to this day.

He is mostly known for his drawings featuring reptilian creatures, mostly dinosaurs, and often adult in nature. He considers himself a "storyteller", infusing many of his drawings with descriptions that often detail how the characters in his drawings arrived at the situation depicted in the images. Among his characters, the most notable are "Grell and Darkthunder", an ankylosaur and a ''[[w:Deinonychus|Deinonychus]]'' living together as a gay couple in a science-fiction universe. They are the most prominent characters in his [[Fur Affinity]] gallery.

Kaa has written several short stories, and has plans for a trilogy of fantasy novels featuring [[humanoid]], [[dragon]]-like characters of his own creation, introduced in earlier stories he has posted to his online galleries.

He is also a fan of [[Bowser]], the arch enemy of Nintendo's mascot [[Wikipedia:Mario|Mario]]
, and is fond of The Inside Story, a game for the DS featuring Bowser.
== The "raptor" ==

One of his best known incarnations was that of '''Kaa Starhunter''', an anthropomorphic ''[[w:Deinonychus|Deinonychus]]'' (known by some as ''[[raptor|Velociraptor]]'') with a feathered crest. The first name, Kaa, was adopted from the [[snake]] of the same name from the "[[Jungle Book]]" stories by Rudyard Kipling.

This "raptor" avatar lived in a contemporary world, unlike most of the characters he likes to write and draw about.

With time came the realization that, while he still liked dinosaurs, another animal was perhaps more fitting to his nature. In late 2003, the raptor was bid a fond farewell. While still living in a planned series of comic strips called ''"Predator and Prey"'', the author admits he hasn't made the time to chronicle the escapades of his former alter-ego.

== The crocodile ==

In his current character's mythology, he is a long-living, half-[[human]]/half-[[crocodile]] servant of [[Egyptian mythology|Sobek]]. This one is known only as the "Bakensobek", without the ''Kaa'' praenomen, and translates as "servant of Sobek" in the ancient Egyptian language.

Another incarnation is that of an anthropomorphic crocodile living in a contemporary setting, and goes with the full ''Kaa Bakensobek'' name.

Kaa is currently working to bring both crocodile incarnations as a [[fursuit]]. This would be his second appearance in a crocodile costume; the previous one being that of a not-so-bright thief named ''Sivak'', a character from a medieval or ''[[Dungeons & Dragons]]''-type setting. Other than this, Sivak does not represent any kind of alter-ego of its creator, nor is in any way related to his "bakensobek" self.

== Online and real life encounters ==

The man behind the crocodile is often somewhat reclusive and silent. However, he can be found online sometimes roaming several [[sim]]s of [[Second Life]], more often than not as something other than a crocodile, but always a reptilian character.

Kaa is currently waiting for a fursuit of his latest dinosaur character to be built in order to resume appearing at furry [[:Category:Conventions|convention]]s.
