FurNation was a website specializing in furry social networking, and content sharing. On 8 December 2009, the site was shut down by its owner, Nexxus. The site was reborn as a Ning-hosted community on 23 December under the control of Reyedog. Hosted sites were restored at the start of February 2010. As of June 2010 it had over 7000 registered members.

As of late November 2010, it served a self-hosted furry social network containing galleries, music and video upload, forums, and chat. On December 10, 2015, SYSTEM updated the www.furnation.com domain to a page explaining why it was now too cost-prohibitive to relaunch the site. (for more see History section)

On 2016 January 10, FurNation launched a crowd-funding at GoFundMe.

As of May 2016, FurNation was back online, but once again shut down in 2017.

As of Mar 2020, FurNation was back online as FurNation Reborn, hosting art only.

FurNation operated FurPlanet, a small adult-oriented comic publishing unit/online store, producing titles such as Magazine until FurPlanet was purchased by FuzzWolf in March 2008.

Services
FurNation is a major establishment in the online furry community, providing a centralized location in which to find a variety of furry related content. In that time FurNation had gained not only a name for being a major player in furry information, art, and stories, but also a reputation for its periodic downtime. Some of these times have been relatively short, while others have been quite a bit longer. Because of this, many who maintained web space on FurNation also have another website.

Second Life and Furnation
Worlds was ran by Corsi Mousehold from December of 2009, till May of 2013. At it's largest point, there were fourteen sims, FurNation Alpha, Dragon, Dystopia, Fusion, Gryphon, Hell, Heroes, Noosphere Prime, Phoenix, Polaris, Prime, Purgatory, Vista, and Zagerion Forest.

As of June 1, 2013, FurNation in Second Life was reopened and new management (directed by Inferniel Solvang) took over the project. FurNation Prime is back online and previous management was let go. New management was installed using the new FurNation Administration group, and includes some of the staff from the Social Network side of FurNation.

Game server
As of 2011, FurNation has a Minecraft server at minecraft.furnation.com<br />

In April 2012, the Minecraft server was shut down.

History
History of FurNation

2015 closure
On December 10, 2015, SYSTEM updated www.furnation.com into a webpage explaining why it was now too cost-prohibitive to relaunch the site after a major DDoS attack in August of the same year, followed by the message (this is the last few paragraphs):

"It is time, after 20 years, for FurNation to close shop. There are MANY other furry based websites out there, and some of them are really impressive (hear that furrynetwork.com). I will refund all the donations we have received since we started taking them again a few months ago when I transfer the funds back into my primary account. I will simply do a return charge on all of them.

I have locked the FurNation.com domain name (and some other derivatives of that name that I own) into escrow for 20 years. After that the names will be free for someone else to use. The present temporary server will be online till the end of this month to host this page then I shall move this page to a free hosting provider so it can remain for other to read in the future.

RIP FurNation. I hope you will be missed and remembered fondly for all the friends you have brought together over the years. FurNation was one of the first furry based sites on the web, but it will not be the last.

FurNation – November 1996 to November 2015

Sincerely,

SYSTEM"

In 2016, the site reopened temporarily. Due to loss of several users after the 2015 DDOS attack, the Site Administrator SYSTEM has anounced and Excecuted Furnation's official shut-down in Febuary 2017.

In 2020 artists Logansryche and PandaJenn brought FurNation back online as FurNation Reborn as the art archive it use to be. The site remains at it's domain furnationreborn.com

Macro, also known as Macrofurry or Furry giant, is, as a furspeak term, used to describe any furry character who is larger than normal (commonly, anything starting above 50 ft/15 m.)

This can mean anything from a character larger than a normal human (8-9 ft = 2.44 to 2.74 m tall), to titans that dwarf cities. As a paraphilia, the sexual attraction to macro characters is known as macrophilia.

Macros occur usually in two varieties. Some furs like growth methods, such as pills or a ray of some description. Others prefer to be a macro-creature, born as a giant (a good example would be the western concept of a dragon).

Macros can be both feral and anthro; feral macro characters are much more common than feral "normal" size furs. There are also some macro taurs, but they are less common within the community.

Macrophile
One of the best-known (albeit older) sites dedicated to macro furs is Macrophile.com, which acts a combination of FurNation with some elements of Fur Affinity.

Several noted furry artists and story writers have galleries or pages on it, including Kenneth Sample, Rogue, Gideon, Doug Winger, SusanDeer, and many others.

Bats are nocturnal flying mammals in the order Chiroptera; they are divided into two suborders: megabats and microbats. Bats are the only mammals that are capable of flight. Bats mainly eat insects, but some species such as the fruit bat, eat fruit.

Bats in media
Famous anthropomorphic bats in animation include Batty Koda, a rainforest-dwelling bat from the 1992 movie FernGully: The Last Rainforest; Bartok - a Russian albino bat from Anastasia; Stellaluna, a fruit bat from the book and film by the same name; and Batfink, an anthropomorphic parody of Batman.

Author Kenneth Oppel created a best-selling series of novels entitled Silverwing which features various species of American bat as central figures. The book has since been adapted into a television series.

Bats are also featured in video games, such as Rouge from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Symbolism
The bat is associated with characters of the night; both villains like Dracula and heroes like Batman. They are also associated with unusualness and eccentricity. Native Americans use the bat to symbolise intuition, rebirth, illusion and communication.

Tyson Tan

2022-05-29T09:37:44Z

2601:18D:4980:90:B4C9:B59A:107:81BD:

Tyson Tan (born August 29, 1984) is a concept artist from the People's Republic of China who mostly specializes in furry and mecha. He speaks Chinese, English and Japanese.

Art style
Tyson Tan draws mostly cute characters. His art style combines the features from both Japanese anime kemonos and western cartoon furries. He is very good at drawing mecha with organic shapes. He draws Female characters mainly.

Obsession
It is observed over the years that Tyson Tan has the following obsessions:
*Mecha. His unique animal-based androids are arguably his signature works.
*Rabbits. He drew lots of rabbits. His avatar is a rabbit android named Cloud.
*Athletic bodies. He posts characters with athletic bodies every now and then.
*Free culture. He only uses Linux and Krita to draw these days, even though they break his stuff all the time. He works voluntarily for many FLOSS projects, donated thousands to Krita Foundation and designed 2 mascots for such projects. He licenses his artworks under Creative Commons most of the time.

Electric Hearts
Electric Hearts is one of Tyson Tan's pet project. It features sci-fi android characters based on animals. Further detail is still unknown, almost 20 years after he announced it. He still posts concepts about this project every now and then and claims he is still doing the writing part. Despite of this, the project appear to have some cult following.

Oasis
Oasis is Tyson Tan's other pet project. It features more traditional furry characters in a modern setting, but with unexplained fantasy and sci-fi elements. He is much less enthusiastic about this project, though. There has been no update to this project in years, and some of its key characters begin to show up as Electric Hearts characters. It's unclear what he is going to do with this project.

Notable works
Tyson Tan's notable works include:
*Electric Hearts (personal project, explained above)
*Kiki the Cyber Squirrel, mascot of free and open source digital painting app Krita.
*Konqi, mascot of KDE, the free and open source software project and community, as the re-designer.

Dragon

2022-05-29T09:05:46Z

2601:18D:4980:90:B4C9:B59A:107:81BD: /* Fictional dragon characters */

species
wikify
copyedit
unref

A dragon is a legendary creature. Although not all dragons have scales or are even entirely reptilian, they are generally classified as scalie or herp within the furry fandom. With such diversity and adaptability to anthropomorphic characterization, the dragon has become one of the most popular phenotypes of furries.

Non-anthro dragons
Full-form, non-anthro dragons come in many shapes and sizes representing their origins from around the world.

* Western Dragons are usually large, leathery-winged, quasi-reptilian or saurian beings. In modern fiction, they are sometimes warm-blooded and reflect influences from contemporary knowledge of dinosaurs. Most have scales and some lay eggs. Variations include but are not limited to:
** Feathered wings
** Fur coat or manes
** Un-scaled hides
* Eastern Dragons are generally long, sinuous, scaly dragons with and/or without wings. Often, they have horns or antlers and are the type depicted in Chinese or Japanese traditional art. Despite being portrayed with fur a lot in modern times, eastern dragons is originally scaly and were believed to have the scales of a carp.
* Rare or Atypical Dragons such as Amphipteres or Wyverns - the moniker "Dragon" is applied to a staggeringly large number of creatures, some of which have very little to do with each other.
* Non-traditional or less common permutations, such as Fairy Dragons or even artificial and symbolic creatures - postmodern fantasy and science-fiction has portrayed the dragon as everything from a psychological meme to steampunk robots.

Character-oriented genres like Furry tend to portray non-anthro dragons with additional capabilities and tweaks to make them more accessible as a sentient character who might display human-like behavior. The capacity for human speech is common. It is also not uncommon to see dragons with dexterous, tool-using forefeet. One can find crossovers with dragon-like qualities in species concepts like the monoceros.

Anthro-Dragons / Dragonoides / Draconides
Anthropomorphic dragons, also known as draconids are similar to their full-form cousins, but humanoid or bipedal. Furry fantasy characterizations of this style of the dragon may freely combine highly interpretive elements:

* They may or may not have wings. Wings may not be functional for flying or maybe only for gliding.
* Feminine forms (be they female, herm, or otherwise) frequently show mammalian traits such as breasts. Such a character might still be defined as a reptile, or might be conceived more like a mammal with draconic features.
* Legs are often digitigrade, but may be plantigrade.
* Body hair and/or fur is common. It sometimes may be presented as birdlike proto-plumage or down.

In fiction, myth, and character backstories, non-humanoid and humanoid dragons are sometimes two aspects or variations of the same species. It is not uncommon for non-anthro dragons to possess the ability of shapeshifting in order to assume a humanoid form or presented as examples of parallel evolution.

Known furry examples of anthro-dragons include Brian Harp's Dz'isu, AraKaraath from his comic In A Perfect World and Phantomgraph's Dracine.

Wyvern
The wyvern is rendered as a winged reptilian creature. It is distinguished by its possession of only two legs and a single pair of wings. Occasionally, a variant such as the sea-wyvern will possess a fish-like tail. More frequently, however, the wyvern's tail is drawn with a barb or a spade at the tip, which is sometimes considered poisonous.

Draconic character traits
Dragons typically have many character traits ascribed to them. Due to the wide range of mythology and differing perceptions of their personality, there is no definitive guide to draconic characterization. Some classical and popular traits are:

* Hoarding valuable items. Traditionally seen as greed, but sometimes as protection of rarities or items which are valuable in more ways than material riches. Some items are often only of value to the dragon and are collected because of particular interest or just because it's shiny or caught the dragon's attention.
* In Asian mythology, an appreciation for fine foods and tea, culture, traditions, and rituals.
* Arrogance, selfishness, and a sense of superiority and/or invulnerability.
* Vanity and great attention to appearances, though not necessarily physical.
* Defensive and territorial, preferring the company of other creatures to another dragon.
* A "breath weapon" of some kind, often visualized as the natural or mystical ability to exhale fire. There are many variations, ranging from icy breath to poisonous clouds. It has been suggested that this originates from the Christian idea that dragons (as "serpents" or "wyrms/worms") embody the tempting serpent of Hell, and thus their bellies are gates linked to Hell; whenever the dragon opens this gate, then, hellfire will belch out. However, such a portrayal can also be considered a derogatory stereotype.
* Deference and even voluntary servitude to great wisdom, purity, power, or beauty.
* Curiosity about smaller, more delicate creatures such as men, to the point of obsession.
* Great cycles of sleep and regeneration, where a dragon might vanish for weeks, months, or years to slumber or hibernate.
* In the oriental context, a dragon is often seen as a messenger of divine powers or enforcer of the law of the gods.
* Mastery of arcane knowledge, such as alchemy and forms of sorcery or magical lore.

One trait many also conceptualize dragons with is referred to as the "pounce or ponder" instinct. A dragon tends to either make a snap decision - or else spend hours, days, or even years laboring over an idea, with little middle ground between the extremes.

Dragons have occasionally taken on a more humanistic sensibility in modern fiction. Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern saga is thought to be the beginning of the modern reconceptualization of the dragon. Particularly within comic books, anime, manga and furry fandom, the dragon as a character or a personal avatar is often employed to add some draconic qualities onto a more human-oriented foundation. Dragon characters commonly take on a more benign, playful, and warm persona.

* Non-anthropomorphic dragons are frequently direct allies of heroes and villains, and often serve as their protectors, companions or partners.
* In A Perfect World, the comic strip by AraKaraath, shows dragons as notorious for harassing postal carriers. Common traits include a love of shiny objects, the ability to "lounge" almost anywhere, and a tendency to take a very long view of things.

* Dragon characters are often crafted for appealing or exciting appearances as much as traditional mythological qualities, and combined with present-day or science fiction settings in addition to traditional fantasy. Here, the dragon's traditional qualities are interpreted in a new context - for example, dragons might be masters of high technology rather than magic, or intellectuals rather than wizards.
* Dragons that have metaphysical elements may employ more modern ideas such as psionic abilities.
* The dragon might embody many traditional aspects, but for new purposes, such as humor. A good example of a traditional yet humorous and contemporary dragon is Llewellyn, from D.C. Simpson's comic strip Ozy and Millie.
* The theriotype of many therians or otherkin is often a dragon.
