The Incredible Journey

2023-07-01T22:30:08Z

2601:18D:4900:4000:1D1F:38BF:EBED:D62:

The Incredible Journey is a 1961 novel by Sheila Burnford.

The three main characters of The Incredible Journey are Luath, a Labrador; Tao, a Siamese cat; and Bodger, an old Bull Terrier dog who are accidentally left behind by their family while on vacation. Instinct lets them journey 250 miles across the Canadian wilderness. Together, the three house pets face starvation, exposure, and wild animals to make their way home to the family they love.

Publication data
First published in May 1961, by Hodder and Stoughton, it was first printed in a Coronet edition in 1963. New illustrations, by Masaru Shimizu, were included from at least 1976 (the copyright date for them is 1972).

The most current editions are a hardcover by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. ISBN 0385322798, a mass market paperback by Laurel Leaf ISBN 0440226708, and a chapter book by Dell Yearling ISBN 0440413249.

Film adaptations
This has been made into two very different films. The 1963 film, The Incredible Journey, stays close to the plot of the original book and the animals do not talk. The 1993 film Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey changed the names and breeds of the animals while keeping the same basic plot. This version features a Golden Retriever named Shadow, an American Bulldog named Chance, and a Himalayan cat named Sassy. It also gave the animals dialog. In the original book, they do not speak. This was followed up by Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco which used the characters from the first Homeward Bound, but had little to do with the original book.

Animorphs

copyedit
unref
Animorphs was a book series created by K.A. Applegate and published by Scholastic. There were 64 books in all, including 54 'main universe' books, four Megamorphs (double-sized books), four standalone novels, and two choose-your-own-adventure. In addition, there were Animorphs Transformers, video games, and a short-lived TV show on Nickelodeon.

Premise
In the series, the main enemy was the Yeerks, a species of mind-controlling parasitic slug-like aliens who enter the brain through the ear of their hosts. In order to fight the Yeerks, a group of five young humans is given the gift of shapeshifting by a dying alien named Elfangor.

The shapeshifting ability allows these humans, who adopt the name Animorphs for themselves, to absorb DNA or genetic material by touch, and then transform into that animal. They can only remain shapeshifted for a maximum of two hours, however; after this the change is permanent. This fate befalls the main character Tobias in the first book, and his difficulties with being stuck as an animal are explored over the series.

The six main characters are Jake (signature morph: tiger), Cassie (signature morph: wolf), Marco (signature morph: gorilla), Rachel (signature morph: elephant until book seven at which point it alternates between elephant and grizzly bear), Tobias (signature morph: red-tailed hawk), and Aximili (an Andalite, a sort of psychic deer-scorpion taur alien). Aximili was rescued from the remnants of an Andalite Dome Ship in the fourth book. In the next (fifth) book, Marco discovers that his mother (sometimes called Eva, other times called Laura) is Visser One. In book six, Jake accidentally falls into a Yeerk Pool and ends up with the Yeerk, named Temrash, who used to be in his brother Tom's head in his. At the very end, Jake sees a Big Red Eye, who isn't named until the twenty-sixth book. The fanbase at this point was already very strong and was able to persuade Applegate to bring back the B.R.E., as the fans had started calling him. Another fan-induced idea happened in books five and thirteen when a member of the usually dumb Hork-Bajir "started talking like he had a Harvard education", as Marco put it in book five. Eight books later, a name was given to this type of Hork-Bajir: Seer. A fan named Erin K. Dover had persuaded Applegate to use intelligent Hork-Bajir.
(Note: The original term Dover used was Hork-Bajir Thinker, not Hork-Bajir Seer.)

In the twenty-third book, it is discovered that Aximili, or Ax, as the others call him, is Tobias' uncle, although the fans had known this ever since the Andalite Chronicles came out.

Caitian

2023-07-01T22:03:08Z

2601:18D:4900:4000:1D1F:38BF:EBED:D62:

Caitians (singular, Caitian) are a fictional felinoid alien species featured in various Star Trek media, most prominently in Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks.

In-universe, Caitians are a spacefaring feline alien species hailing from the planet Cait, and are long-standing members of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet.

Appearance history
Depictions of Caitians have varied throughout Star Treks history. In all prime timeline depictions, Caitians exhibit several feline attributes, including short faces, triangular ears, large yellow or green eyes with vertically slitted pupils, whiskers, fangs, and a tail. Their bodies are covered in fur, which can appear in a range of colours and patterns.

Introduction
Caitians were first seen in the sixth episode of The Animated Series, "The Survivor" (first aired October 13, 1973), in which the Caitian Lieutenant M'Ress is introduced as a communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise, taking the position when Uhura is off-duty. She is depicted as a lion-like humanoid with digitigrade legs and a distinctive "purring" voice, supposedly caused by biological differences making it difficult for her to speak languages like English. M'Ress is the only Caitian depicted in The Animated Series, appearing in six of the series' 22 episodes.

The Animated Series also featured the Kzinti, an antagonistic race similar to Caitians. Materials released alongside the series (which are not necessarily canon), state that the Kzinti and Caitians share a common ancestry. The status of The Animated Series to the wider franchise's canon has fluctuated over time and is nowadays generally considered to be non-canonical, however the Caitians, Kzinti, and M'Ress have all been referenced in canon Star Trek media in the years since.

Later appearances
Two male Caitians appear as a background characters in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, a brown-furred admiral and a black-furred commodore who resemble a lynx and black panther respectively. Both are both seen attending James T. Kirk's court martial.

The Caitian homeworld, Cait, is briefly referenced in the first episode of season two of Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Lower Decks, which premiered in 2020, featured the first recurring Caitian character to the franchise: chief medical officer of the USS Cerritos, Doctor T'Ana. Unlike M'Ress, T'Ana resembles a domestic house cat, has plantigrade feet and no difficulty speaking English. T'Ana appears in most episodes of Lower Decks.

Several more Caitians, all resembling various domestic cats, appear in the second season Lower Decks episode "We'll Always Have Tom Paris" and a photograph of M'Ress appears in the background of the same episode. A Kzinti ensign also appears serving aboard the Cerritos, marking their first appearance since The Animated Series, and first as an ally to the Federation.

A Caitian child makes a recurring appearance as one of The Diviner's prisoners in Star Trek: Prodigy. Unlike previous Caitian appearances, this character has white eyes with round pupils.

Other appearances
Caitians were added as a purchasable playable race in Star Trek Online in June 2010. Their appearance was modelled after their appearance in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Star Trek Into Darkness, which is set in an alternate timeline to most Star Trek media, features a radically different Caitian appearance. They are much more human in appearance, lacking the fur and facial features of typical Caitians, whilst maintaining furred tails and gaining ridged ear and neck markings. Although not identified by name in the film, producer Damon Lindelof confirmed this was their interpretation of Caitians in an interview following the film's release.

Caitians and furry
M'Ress remained popular for years after the end of The Animated Series, and was the unofficial inspiration of Freighter Tails and stories by Paul S. Gibbs. M'Ress, with her cat-like voice patterns and her anthropomorphic features, represents one of the first "furry" characters shown on TV, one that was neither a human with cat ears nor a talking cat.cn

An alien feline race called "Caitians," inspired by but not intended to be identical with the Star Trek: The Animated Series version, is featured in the Chakona Space setting.

The Labrador Retriever ("Labrador" or "Lab" for short) is the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in both the United States and the United Kingdom. As such, it is one of the most commonly found dog breeds in the furry fandom, next to Siberian Huskies and German Shepherds. Furries generally choose Labradors for their common usage, as well as their general playful personalities. Labradors come in three colors, black, chocolate and yellow. It is bred as a seeing eye dog and a hunting dog.

Pit bull is a term used to describe several breeds of dogs with similar physical characteristics and lineage, including the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Bully, the American Staffordshire Terrier and occasionally the American Bulldog. Pit bulls have even been confused for Labrador Retrievers (as well as the other way around) because both pit bulls and Labradors have similar large, square heads. Pit bulls are often a target of breed specific legislation, or legislation that wants to ban or limit ownership of any breed deemed dangerous. Pit bull characters are often seen in the furry fandom, though perhaps less often than more popular types/breeds, such as the Siberian Husky.

A Chicago based Pit Bull rescue called Furry Friends Foundation was the charity for Midwest Furfest 2004. The foundation brought a few of its dogs to the convention and received over $7,000 in donations from the con. The shelter had seen its highest adoption rate ever in June 2006 when, in August of 2006, they announced that they were being forced to close their doors unexpectedly for reasons known only to the trustees.

The Anthrocon 2007 charity, Animal Friends, brought several adoptable animals to the convention, including a small female pit bull named Kachina.
