A wolfwere is the reverse of a werewolf, that is it transforms from a wolf to a humanoid wolf instead of from a human to a humanoid wolf.<ref>W:Wolfwere at Wikipedia. In fantasy contexts, wolfweres may be referred to by one of the many names given to phantom hounds, in particular the Barghest whose description sometimes includes the ability to shift between wolf and goblin form.cn<br />

In the Dungeons & Dragons universe, a "wolfwere" is completely different compared to the normal lycanthropic werewolf. It is a wolf that polymorphs into a quadrupedal human shape and a humanoid-wolf hybrid, often retaining the bipedal stance.<ref>Wolfwere (Monstrous Manual). Werewolf: The Apocalypse features the lupus breed of Garou that are born from the union of a werewolf and a wolf. While not called a wolfwere, they share many of the same characteristics. They are born as ordinary wolves and eventually go through a metamorphosis in which they gain human intelligence and the ability to shapeshift from wolf to human.<ref>Lupus at World of Darkness Wiki.
