Hybrid

2601:18D:4700:7640:1D64:C4B5:3BB9:FA7D: /* Hybrid and furry */

:This article is about the species term. For the person of this first name, see Hybrid Wuff.

A hybrid (biology-wise) is the offspring resulting from combining the qualities of two organisms of different breeds, varieties, species, or genera through sexual reproduction ("crosses").

Etymology
The term hybrid is derived from Latin hybrida, used for crosses such as a tame sow and a wild boar. The term came into popular use in English in the 19th century, though examples of its use have been found from the early 17th century.

Conspicuous hybrids are popularly identified with portmanteau names, starting in the 1920s with the breeding of a tiger/lion hybrids (ligers and tigons).

Description
Generally, it means that each cell has genetic material from two different organisms, whereas an individual where some cells are derived from a different organism is called a chimera. Hybrids are not always intermediated between their parents (such as in blending inheritance), but can show hybrid vigor, sometimes growing larger or taller than either parent.

The concept of a hybrid is interpreted differently in animal and plant breeding, where there is interest in the individual parentage. In genetics, attention is focused on the numbers of chromosomes, while in taxonomy, a key question is how closely related the parent species are.

Hybrid and furry
Furry characters, fursonas, or OCs, can be, as the same as in mainstream culture, hybrids of two biologically possible animal crosses, such as a coyote and a wolf, commonly identified as a coywolf, resulting in ligers, wolfdogs, coydogs, and tigons, among others.

But thanks to ideas/imagination not being impeded by logical biology, furry variations in hybridization are limitless. This includes crosses between:
* Actual biological "cousins" - Such as a fox and a wolf, commonly identified in the furry fandom as a folf (or pholph).
* Between not related biological species - Which can not interbreed, such as a tiger and a skunk, this cross popularized by furry artist Max Black Rabbit's popular character, Zig Zag. Other species such animals crossbreed with include reptiles, birds, insects or fish.
* Between heterotrophs and autotrophs - Plants and animals.
* Synthetic biology with organic lifeforms - Like xenobots with any animal (like primagens, but not anthroids or inanimorphs).
* Life forms with the undead - Living furries and the living dead hybrids.
* Werewolf hybrids - In the fandom, lycanthrope crosses do occur between related animals or species, with one being the "base" animal (the human in the werewolf scenario).
:Sometimes the cross is between not biologically related animals or species, in some concepts two animals that are diametrically opposite of each other, like a meek-looking bunny and/or a cute sheep transforming into an apex predator like a wolf, sometimes with a twist (I.e. werewolves still exhibiting prey animals' apprehensions after change). do occur in the fandom, but are more common in mainstream culture (sometimes referred to as werepires or vaewolves, in relation to the last mentioned cross).<ref>Werewolf-Vampire Hybrids page on the BloodRayne & Mia Wiki.
